In the work, based on self-assembly dual-site DNA tetrahedral scaffold (DTS), thionine (Thi), and 6-(Ferrocenyl)hexanethiol (Fc6S), a multiplex strategy electrochemical platform was fabricated for the simultaneous detection of profenofos (PFF) and diazinon (DZN). Thi and Fc6S were used to label aptamers for the synthesis of probes respectively. Notably, Thi and Fc6S engendered recognizable DPV peaks at different potentials to achieve simultaneous detection of PFF and DZN. In addition to increasing the conductivity of the electrode, the combination of carboxylic acid functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes and ferroferric oxide nanoparticles could also increase its higher specific surface area of the electrode interface to adsorb more DTS. Because of the mechanical rigidity of the DTS, the DTS could keep a complementary chain upright and provide more binding sites for aptamers, the binding efficiency between the complementary chain and 2 binding aptamers could be improved. Comparing the aptasensors performance of single-strand DNA with that of the DTS with complementary strands, the benefits of the DTS were highlighted in this system. Under optimal conditions, the detection limits of PFF and DZN were both 3.33 pg/mL and the detection ranges were both 1.00 × 101-1.00 × 107 pg/mL. Meanwhile, the recoveries of PFF and DZN were 87.15 %-117.34 % and 91.20 %-114.19 %, respectively. The aptasensor could realize the simultaneous detection of PFF and DZN in vegetables. Furthermore, the aptasensor also had good stability and selectivity. This strategy could provide a good reference for developing effective aptasensors for the simultaneous detection of other small molecules and toxins.

A method for preparing new artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) based on supramolecular metallogels was proposed. Various metal ions were introduced into a solution of a bi-benzimidazole compound (P) in ethylene glycol, and P exhibited high selectivity toward Al3+, as indicated by the noticeable red shift (49 nm) observed in the fluorescence spectra of P after the addition of Al3+. Interestingly, the gelator, P, could self-assemble into a stable supramolecular gel (P-gel) that exhibits strong aggregation-induced emission in ethylene glycol. Thus, two ALHSs were successfully prepared in a gel environment. The P-Al3+ assembly acts as the donor in the ALHSs, while BODIPY 505/515 (BDP) and rhodamine 6G (Rh6G), which are loaded onto the P-Al3+ assembly, act as acceptors. In these two diverse systems, the occurrence of an energy transfer process is confirmed from the P-Al3+ assembly to BDP and Rh6G. The findings of this study will enable the design and fabrication of ALHSs.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease initiated by lipid-mediated vascular inflammation. From the perspective of conventional treatment, it is difficult to achieve good therapeutic effects via regulation of a single lipid or anti-inflammatory effects. Herein, we designed an amphiphilic low molecular weight heparin-unsaturated fatty acid conjugate (LMWH-uFA) that acted as both an antiatherosclerotic agent and a nanocarrier with self-delivery properties. Structurally, LMWH-uFA self-assembled to form micelles with LMWH as the shell and uFA as the core, without any additives, which guaranteed their biosafety. Functionally, the hydrophilic segment, LMWH, prevented monocyte adhesion to inhibit early vascular inflammation, and the hydrophobic segment, uFA, could participate in the regulation of blood lipids. The anti-inflammatory drug rapamycin (RAP) was encapsulated in the micellar core, which improved its water solubility, and cooperated with LMWH to achieve targeted blockade of the vascular inflammation cascade at P-selectin. The three treatment modules, LMWH, uFA and RAP, were integrated into one system for different therapeutic targets in anticipation of better efficacy. In an atherosclerosis mouse model, RAP-loaded NPs significantly reduced the plaque area and showed satisfactory curative effects, which were related to the targeting of lipid regulation and inflammation. Thus, these modular micellar nanoparticles offer a promising approach for the clinical treatment of atherosclerosis.

The gut microbiome plays a vital role in host ecological adaptation, especially dietary adaptations. Primates have evolved a variety of dietary and gut physiological structures that are useful to explore the role of the gut microbiome in host dietary adaptations. Here, we characterize gut microbiome transcriptional activity in ten fecal samples from primates with three different diets and compare the results to their previously reported metagenomic profile. Bacteria related to cellulose degradation, like Bacteroidaceae and Alcaligenaceae, were enriched and actively expressed in the gut microbiome of folivorous primates, and functional analysis revealed that the glycan biosynthesis and metabolic pathways were significantly active. In omnivorous primates, Helicobacteraceae, which promote lipid metabolism, were significantly enriched in expression, and activity and xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism as well as lipid metabolism pathways were significantly active. In frugivorous primates, the abundance and activity of Elusimicrobiaceae, Neisseriaceae, and Succinivibrionaceae, which are associated with digestion of pectin and fructose, were significantly elevated, and the functional pathways involved in the endocrine system were significantly enriched. In conclusion, the gut microbiome contributes to host dietary adaptation by helping hosts digest the inaccessible nutrients in their specific diets.

This paper proposes a strategy for fabricating new artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) based on supramolecular multi-component metallogels. Al3+ was introduced into a solution of an acylhydrazone compound (L) in DMSO or DMF to form the L-Al3+ assembly. After adding Al3+ to the L solution, a noticeable blue shift appeared in the fluorescence spectra of L. Moreover, L could form a gel (L-B-gel) with 1,3:2,4-dibenzylidene sorbitol (B) in a DMSO-H2O binary solution. Finally, we obtained a multi-component metallogel (L-Al3+-B-gel) and successfully fabricated two ALHSs (L-Al3+/rhodamine 6G (Rh6G) and L-Al3+/rhodamine B (RhB)). In these systems, the L-Al3+ supramolecular assembly acts as the donor, while Rh6G and RhB act as acceptors. Additionally, we confirmed an energy-transfer process from the L-Al3+ component to Rh6G and RhB separately. The proposed fabrication strategy will facilitate the development of ALHSs.

The relationship between the Piezo1 channel of vascular endothelial cells and vascular calcification is unknown. In this study, after subcutaneous injection of vitamin D for 10 consecutive days, the mice showed an increase in serum calcium, aortic calcium content, vascular tension and pulse wave velocity. Piezo1channel antagonist, GsMTx4 alleviated arteriosclerosis and decreased the aortic calcium content, while Piezo1 agonist Yoda1 produced opposite effect. In addition, activation of Piezo1 by Yoda1 impaired the function of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), as evidenced by further decreased production of NO, reduction in expression levels of eNOS, MMP-2, PCNA and VEGFA. When co-culture of HUVECs and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), activation of Piezo1 in HUVECs enhanced expression levels of calcification-related SOX9 and Runx2 genes, increased ALP activity and calcium deposition in VSMCs. We concluded that Piezo1 in endothelial cells is involved in the pathogenesis of vascular calcification. This study provides a new experimental basis for the prevention and treatment of vascular calcification.

The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology is a mainstream detection method used in medical diagnoses, environmental monitoring, food hygiene, and safety. However, the systematic analysis of a compact structure with fast temperature changes for an ultra-fast PCR device that is convenient for on-site detection still lacks investigation. To overcome the problems of low heating efficiency and non-portability of PCR devices currently used, a miniaturized PCR system based on a microfluidic chip, i.e., lab-on-chip technology, has been proposed. The main objective of this paper is to explore the feasibility of using a heat resistor that can reach a fast heating rate and temperature uniformity combined with air cooling technology for rapid cooling and to investigate the influences of various pattern designs and thicknesses of the resistor on heating rates and temperature uniformity. Additionally, a PCR chip made of various materials with different thermal properties, such as surface emissivity, thermal conductivity, mass density, and heat capacity at constant pressure is analyzed. In addition to the heat loss caused by the natural convection of air, the radiation loss of the simulation object is also considered, which makes the model much closer to the practical situation. Our research results provide a considerable reference for the design of the heating and cooling modules used in the ultra-fast PCR protocol, which has great potential in In Vitro Diagnosis (IVD) and the PCR detection of foodborne pathogens and bacteria.

The cleavage of ß-O-4 linkage in lignin is one of the key steps for oxidative conversion of lignin to low-molecular-weight aromatics. Herein, we prepare Co nanoparticles embedded in three-dimensional network of nitrogen-doped graphene (Co/NG@3DNG-X) through immersion-pyrolysis procedure, in which X denotes the pyrolysis temperature. The detailed characterization of Co/NG@3DNG-X shows that the Co nanoparticles are coated with a few layers of nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) sheets that are further embedded in 3DNG matrix. The catalytic activities of the Co/NG@3DNG-X for the oxidative cleavage of ß-O-4 linkage in lignin model compounds with O2 as oxidant are explored. It is demonstrated that catalytic activities of as-prepared Co/NG@3DNG-X can be tuned by varying the pyrolysis condition, and the Co/NG@3DNG-900 shows the highest catalytic activity, which is attributed to the enriched Co-Nx species, the strong surface basicity, and the mesoporous motif of 3DNG network. More pronouncedly, the Co/NG@3DNG-900 can also effectively catalyze the oxidative cleavage of organosolv lignin, generating certain monomeric aromatics. Additionally, the intrinsic magnetic property of Co nanoparticles makes the Co/NG@3DNG-X be easily recovered from the reaction mixture, and the as-coated thin NG layer can protect Co nanoparticle from oxidation condition, which putting together afford the Co/NG@3DNG-X with good reusability and stability.

Macroautophagy/autophagy is critically involved in the process of salivary gland (SG) diseases such as xerostomia, which has a serious impact on quality of life. KRT14+ progenitor cells are found to be the main progenitors for maintaining the ductal homeostasis of the submandibular SGs. In this study, we investigated the role of ATG5 in SG KRT14+ cells in mice and humans. Human labial salivary glands (LSG) from primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) and non-pSS patients (normal), and submandibular glands (SMG) from Atg5flox/flox ; Krt14-Cre (cKO) mice were used. ATG5+ KRT14+ and p62+ KRT14+ cells were detected by immunofluorescence staining in LSG. TUNEL, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and western blot were performed to detect cell death in SMG. Saliva was collected in 12-week-old (12 W) and 32-week-old (32 W) mice, then the concentration of calcium and buffering capacity were detected to analyze the function of SG. We found that LSG from pSS patients showed increased p62 and decreased ATG5 in KRT14+ cells. We further revealed that in 32 W, (1) the function of salivary glands was significantly impaired in cKO mice, (2) cell death increased in cKO mice, but cl-Caspase 3 was not significantly changed, and (3) cleaved gasdermin D increased and was highly expressed in KRT14+ cells of cKO mice. After applying a pyroptosis inhibitor to 32 W mice, the reduced saliva flow rate was rescued. In addition, pyroptosis was also found in KRT14+ cells of pSS patients. Collectively, our results indicate that Atg5 deficiency would induce pyroptosis in mice SG, which could lead to functional impairments of SG.

Background: Although sleep disorders significantly increase the risk of cognitive impairment, literature is relatively scarce regarding the impact of sleep status on cognitive function in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We seek to study the association between pre-stroke subjective sleep status and cognitive function at 3 months after stroke. Patients and methods: Data were analyzed for 1,759 AIS patients from the Impairment of Cognition and Sleep after Acute Ischemic Stroke or Transient Ischemic Attack in Chinese Patients Study (ICONS). Pre-stroke subjective sleep status was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Greater sleep fragmentation was defined as waking up in the middle of the night or early morning ≥3 times a week. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) at 3 months after stroke. Primary endpoint was the incidence of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) at 3 months after stroke. The association between subjective sleep status and PSCI was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression. Results: PSCI occurred in 52.1% at 3 months after stroke. Patients with very bad sleep quality before stroke were at increased risk of PSCI (OR, 2.11; 95% CI, 1.11-4.03; P=0.03). Subgroup analysis found that the association between very bad sleep quality and PSCI was more evident among patients with high school education or above (OR, 5.73; 95% CI, 1.92-17.10; P for interaction=0.02). In addition, patients with greater sleep fragmentation before stroke were also at higher risk of PSCI (OR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.20-2.01; P<0.01). Similarly, subgroup analysis showed that the risk of PSCI was more pronounced among patients without employment (OR, 2.45; 95% CI, 1.59-3.77; P for interaction=0.01). Conclusion: Very bad sleep quality and greater sleep fragmentation before stroke were identified as independent risk factors for PSCI at 3 months after stroke.

BACKGROUND: Chrysanthemum seticuspe has emerged as a model plant species of cultivated chrysanthemums, especially for studies involving diploid and self-compatible pure lines (Gojo-0). Its genome was sequenced and assembled into chromosomes. However, the genome annotation of C. seticuspe still needs to be improved to elucidate the complex regulatory networks in this species. RESULTS: In addition to the 74,259 mRNAs annotated in the C. seticuspe genome, we identified 18,265 novel mRNAs, 51,425 novel lncRNAs, 501 novel miRNAs and 22,065 novel siRNAs. Two C-class genes and YABBY family genes were highly expressed in disc florets, while B-class genes were highly expressed in ray florets. A WGCNA was performed to identify the hub lncRNAs and mRNAs in ray floret- and disc floret-specific modules, and CDM19, BBX22, HTH, HSP70 and several lncRNAs were identified. ceRNA and lncNAT networks related to flower development were also constructed, and we found a latent functional lncNAT-mRNA combination, LXLOC_026470 and MIF2. CONCLUSIONS: The annotations of mRNAs, lncRNAs and small RNAs in the C. seticuspe genome have been improved. The expression profiles of flower development-related genes, ceRNA networks and lncNAT networks were identified, laying a foundation for elucidating the regulatory mechanisms underlying disc floret and ray floret formation.

The acquired resistance to Osimertinib (AZD9291) greatly limits the clinical benefit of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), whereas AZD9291-resistant NSCLCs are prone to metastasis. It's challenging to overcome AZD9291 resistance and suppress metastasis of NSCLC simultaneously. Here, a nanocatalytic sensitizer (VF/S/A@CaP) is proposed to deliver Vitamin c (Vc)-Fe(II), si-OTUB2, ASO-MALAT1, resulting in efficient inhibition of tumor growth and metastasis of NSCLC by synergizing with AHP-DRI-12, an anti-hematogenous metastasis inhibitor by blocking the amyloid precursor protein (APP)/death receptor 6 (DR6) interaction designed by our lab. Fe2+ released from Vc-Fe(II) generates cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) through Fenton reaction. Subsequently, glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is consumed to sensitize AZD9291-resistant NSCLCs with high mesenchymal state to ferroptosis due to the glutathione (GSH) depletion caused by Vc/dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) conversion. By screening NSCLC patients' samples, metastasis-related targets (OTUB2, LncRNA MALAT1) are confirmed. Accordingly, the dual-target knockdown plus AHP-DRI-12 significantly suppresses the metastasis of AZD9291-resistant NSCLC. Such modality leads to 91.39% tumor inhibition rate in patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models. Collectively, this study highlights the vulnerability to ferroptosis of AZD9291-resistant tumors and confirms the potential of this nanocatalytic-medicine-based modality to overcome critical AZD9291 resistance and inhibit metastasis of NSCLC simultaneously.

The treatment of severe hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) cases is difficult.We lack an early warning model for severe HFRS patients today. We retrospectively collected the data of 235 HFRS patients from January 2013 to December 2019, as well as 394 laboratory indicators. The multivariate logistic regression model was used to construct an early warning model for severe disease. The accuracy of the model was evaluated based on the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The area under curve (AUCs) of the early warning models both exceeded 0.9 for the two stages. In the febrile stage, there were significant differences between the severe and mild groups (P < 0.05) in the renal estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urinary leukocytes , electrolytes, urine conductivity and urinary epithelial cell count. In the non-febrile stage, there were significant differences between the severe and mild groups (P < 0.05) in the renal eGFR, electrolytes, urine conductivity and renal cystatin C. The two early warning models are well fitted and have excellent predictive performance. That can help clinicians gain time to provide appropriate preemptive treatment to avoid the further development of severe disease and reduce the mortality rate.

Background: COVID-19 has dramatically impacted people's health, especially mental health. This study aimed to compare the psychological status of pregnant women before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods: Participants were recruited (from September 29, 2019, to November 5, 2020) and screened by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7). The study participants were categorized into three groups based on two turning-points: January 23, 2020, when China initiated a locked-down strategy, and May 11, 2020, when Shanghai started to ease the COVID-19 measures. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with depression and anxiety in pregnant women. We used enter method for variable selection; only variables with P <0.10 were included in the final model. Results: We recruited 478 pregnant women. After the outbreak, the depression rate (PHQ-9 ≥ 5) increased by 12.3% (from 35.4 to 47.7%), and the anxiety rate (GAD-7 ≥ 5) was stable (13.3 vs. 16.2%). The multivariable logistic regression results further confirmed that the odds of depression in pregnant women increased 81% after the outbreak (aOR = 1.81, 95%CI: 1.16-2.84). However, the median depression scale score was still statistically higher after the pandemic situation was stable (5.0 vs. 4.0) compared to the outbreak period. Conclusion: The depression rate increased among pregnant women after the outbreak and was not recovered after the ease of COVID-19 measures in Shanghai. Health institutes should pay attention to the long-term influence of the pandemic.

Chrysanthemum is one of the most popular flowers worldwide and has high aesthetic and commercial value. However, the cultivated varieties of chrysanthemum are hexaploid and highly heterozygous, which makes gene editing and gene function research difficult. Gojo-0 is a diploid homozygous line bred from a self-compatible mutant of Chrysanthemum seticuspe and is expected to become a model plant of the genus Chrysanthemum. After assessment of different growth regulator combinations, the optimal concentrations of α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 6-benzyladenine (6-BA) in the regeneration system were 1.0 mg·L-1 and 0.2 mg·L-1, respectively. In the genetic transformation system, the selected concentrations of kanamycin, hygromycin and glufosinate-ammonium were 10 mg·L-1, 2.5 mg·L-1 and 0.6 mg·L-1 for bud generation and 12 mg L-1, 1.5 mg·L-1 and 0.5 mg·L-1 for rooting. The transgenic plants were verified by not only PCR detection and GUS staining, but also identification of the T-DNA insertion locus using high-throughput sequencing. Our results lay the foundation for gene functional research on chrysanthemum and will help with the identification of transgenic plants.

Normal spermatogenesis and sperm function are crucial for male fertility. The effects of healthy testicular aging and testicular premature aging on spermatogenesis, sperm function, and the spermatogenesis microenvironment cannot be ignored. Compared with younger men, the testis of older men tends to have disturbed spermatogenic processes, sperm abnormalities, sperm dysfunction, and impaired Sertoli and Leydig cells, which ultimately results in male infertility. Various exogenous and endogenous factors also contribute to pathological testicular premature aging, such as adverse environmental stressors and gene mutations. Mechanistically, Y-chromosomal microdeletions, increase in telomere length and oxidative stress, accumulation of DNA damage with decreased repair ability, alterations in epigenetic modifications, miRNA and lncRNA expression abnormalities, have been associated with impaired male fertility due to aging. In recent years, the key molecules and signaling pathways that regulate testicular aging and premature aging have been identified, thereby providing new strategies for diagnosis and treatment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the underlying mechanisms of aging on spermatogenesis. Furthermore, potential rescue measures for reproductive aging have been discussed. Finally, the inadequacy of testicular aging research and future directions for research have been envisaged to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of testicular aging and premature aging.

CONTEXT: Gu-Shu-Kang (GSK) is a clinical traditional Chinese medicine prescription for the treatment of primary osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the protection of GSK against dexamethasone (Dex)-induced disturbance of musculoskeletal system in male mice and to identify the underlying mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice in Dex-treated groups were orally administered (i.g.) with vehicle, low dose (0.38 g/kg), middle dose (0.76 g/kg), or high dose (1.52 g/kg) of GSK for 8 weeks. A control group was designed without any treatment. The quadriceps femoris, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius were harvested. Molecular expression was determined by RT-PCR and immunoblotting. RESULTS: Treatment with GSK enhanced weight-loaded swimming time (from 411.7 ± 58.4 s in Dex group to 771.4 ± 87.3 s in GSK-M) and grip strength (from 357.8 ± 23.9 g in Dex group to 880.3 ± 47.6 g in GSK-M). GSK produced a rise in cross-sectional area of myofibers and promoted a switching of glycolytic-to-oxidative myofiber. The administration with GSK affected expression of muscle regulatory factors shown by the down-regulation in MuRF-1 and atrogin-1 and the up-regulation in myogenic differentiation factor (MyoD) and myosin heavy chain (MHC). GSK stimulated tissue IGF-1 signalling pathway (IGF-1R/PI3K/Akt), not only in skeletal muscle but also in bone associated with the amelioration of trabecular bone mineral density and the improvement of osteogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: These findings revealed the potential mechanisms involved in the beneficial effects of Gu-Shu-Kang on musculoskeletal system in mice with challenging to dexamethasone, and this prescription may have applications in management for muscle atrophy and osteoporosis triggered by glucocorticoid.

The multi-dithering method has been well verified in the phase-locking of polarization coherent combination experiments. However, it is difficult to apply to low repetition rate pulsed laser coherent combination, since there exists an overlap in the frequency domain between the pulse laser and the large amplitude-phase noise resulting in traditional filters being unable to effectively separate the phase noise. Aiming to solve the problem, we propose, to the best of our knowledge, a novel method of pulse noise detection, identification, and filtering based on the autocorrelation characteristics between noise signals. The self-designed adaptive window filtering algorithm can effectively filter the pulse signal doped in the phase noise around 0.1 ms. After the pulses are filtered out, the remaining phase noise signal is used as the input signal of the multi-dithering method for phase locking; the phase difference of two pulsed beams (10 kHz) is successfully compensated to zero; and the coherent combination of the closed-loop phase lock is realized. Simultaneously, the phase correction periods are short, the phase lock effect is stable, and the intensity of the final combined pulses rises to the ideal value (0.9Imax). In addition, the adaptive window filtering algorithm we proposed can be applied to the coherent combined system of large array fiber lasers and further lay the foundation for fiber phased array lidar.

The study aimed to investigate the mechanism by which cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are activated by cancer cells and construct a risk model to predict the prognosis of patients with pancreatic cancer (PC) after surgery. Pancreatic stellate cells were isolated from human pancreatic tissue and co-cultured with cancer cells to verify their crosstalk. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to detect proteins secreted by cancer cells. The online tools Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis, UALCAN, and the Human Protein Atlas were used to analyse gene expression in PC. Expression data from the cancer genome atlas and the clinical samples were used to develop a training receiver operating characteristic (ROC) model and an external validation ROC model, respectively. We identified that cancer cells promote the activation of inflammatory CAFs (iCAF) through secretory proteins, which promote PC metastasis. Six candidate proteins secreted by cancer cells were identified which promote iCAF formation. These proteins were highly expressed in tumours and were associated with a poor prognosis in patients with PC. Moreover, a 6-gene model was constructed to predict death risk in patients at 1, 2 and 3 years after surgery. The training areas under the ROC curves (AUC) of 1-, 2- and 3-year death risks were 0.780, 0.792 and 0. 825, respectively. The externally validated AUC of death at 3 years post-surgery was 0.728. In conclusion, cancer cell-secreted proteins play a vital role in iCAF formation, and the 6-gene model may be a potential marker for predicting whether PC patients will benefit from surgery.

The rareness and weak durability of Pt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) have hindered the large-scale application of fuel cells. Here, we developed an efficient metal-free catalyst consisting of N, S co-doped graphene nanoribbons (N, S-GNR-2s) for ORRs. GNRs were firstly synthesized via the chemical unzipping of carbon nanotubes, and then N, S co-doping was conducted using urea as the primary and sulfourea as the secondary heteroatom sources. The successful incorporation of nitrogen and sulfur was confirmed by elemental mapping analysis as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Electrochemical testing revealed that N, S-GNR-2s exhibited an Eonset of 0.89 V, E1/2 of 0.79 V and an average electron transfer number of 3.72, as well as good stability and methanol tolerance. As a result, N, S-GNR-2s displayed better ORR property than either N-GNRs or N, S-GNRs, the control samples prepared with only a primary heteroatom source, strongly clarifying the significance of secondary-heteroatom-doping on enhancing the catalytic activity of carbon-based nanomaterials.
