Drought is a major factor limiting crop productivity and quality. Sucrose non-fermenting-1 (SNF1)-related protein kinase 2s (SnRK2s) play critical roles in plant abiotic stress responses, especially in drought stress. However, knowledge regarding the functional roles of SnRK2s in drought stress and their underlying mechanisms is relatively limited in tea plant. In this study, CsSnRK2.5, a PEG 6000- and ABA-induced SnRK2 gene from tea plant, was overexpressed in Arabidopsis to investigate its potential function in drought stress response. The results showed that overexpression of CsSnRK2.5 resulted in enhanced drought tolerance, as indicated by an amelioration of the changes in various physiological indexes, including a decreased rate of water loss and decreased accumulation of ROS and MDA. In addition, CsSnRK2.5 overexpression conferred hypersensitivity to exogenous ABA, and transgenic plants exhibited improved ABA-mediated stomatal closure compared to WT plants. Moreover, the expression of some stress response genes, including AtRAB18 and AtRD29b, was more strongly induced in transgenic plants than in the WT when subjected to ABA and drought treatments. Taken together, our results indicate that CsSnRK2.5 is a positive regulator of ABA-regulated drought stress responses.

Aim: This meta-analysis study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of TEVAR versus OCSR for TBAD patients.Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, EmBase, and the Cochrane library to identify studies compared the effectiveness of TEVAR and OCSR in TBAD patients from the inception up to July 2019. The summary results were calculated using a random-effects model.Results: The electronic search identified 1,894 studies, and 18 studies with 9,664 TBAD patients were included. We noted patients received TEVAR were associated with a reduced risk of in-hospital mortality, acute renal failure, respiratory failure, and bleeding as compared with OCSR, whereas no significant differences between groups for the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, paraplegia, mesenteric ischaemia/infarction, reinterventions, sepsis, and spinal cord ischaemia.Conclusions: The findings of this meta-analysis study suggested that TEVAR resulted in more short-term survival benefits. Moreover, the reduced risk of acute renal failure, respiratory failure and bleeding was detected in TEVAR group. The treatment effects of TEVAR versus OCSR on specific complications should be further verified by a study with high-level of evidence.Key messageComprehensive collected studies investigated the treatment effectiveness between TEVAR and OCSR for TBAD patientsTEVAR resulted in more survival benefits, in addition to lower risk of acute renal failure, respiratory failure and bleedingThe results of stratified analyses according to patients' characteristics were conducted.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic aortic arch rupture with pseudoaneurysm is a rare high fatal injury. Thoracic endovascular aortic repair(TEVAR) is widely used in the treatment of aortic diseases. However a unified traumatic aortic injury risk stratification tool still lacks. The patients' disease assessment and operation method still rely on the doctors' subjective anticipation of disease and surgical results. CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old male presented with chest pain and hoarseness of recent onset. Imageological examination showed aortic rupture with mediastinal pseudoaneurysm in Zone 1. Debranching + TEVAR hybrid operation was considered: Using artificial blood vessels rebuild the arch branches, the covered stent was placed in aortic arch for endovascular repair via femoral artery. The follow-up was good in postoperative 7d, 1 year and > 2 years. CONCLUSION: The traumatic aortic arch rupture with pseudoaneurysm treated by Debranching+TEVAR hybrid operation is feasible. The short-term and medium-term follow-up results are satisfactory. For traumatic aortic arch injury, hybrid operation is recommended to reduce the risk of cardiopulmonary bypass and deep hypothermia circulatory arrest under no open operation conditions or emergency situation.

A highly selective and efficient LC-MS/MS method was developed to determine the plasma concentration of magnolol, hesperidin, neohesperidin and geniposide following oral administration of Zhi-Zi-Hou-Po decoction in normal and depressed rats. Plasma samples were pretreated by protein precipitation with methanol. Chromatographic separation was performed on an XTerra® MS C18 column using a gradient elution with a mobile phase composed of acetonitrile-0.1% aqueous formic acid. The proposed method was validated to be specific, accurate and precise for the analytes determination in plasma samples. The calibration curves displayed good linearity over definite concentration ranges for the analytes. The intra- and inter-day precision of the proposed method at three different levels were all within <11.13% and the relative errors ranged from -8.46 to 8.93%. The recovery of the four compounds ranged from 82.72 to 89.08% and no apparent matrix effect was observed during sample analysis. After full validation, the established method was successfully applied for comparing the pharmacokinetics of four components between normal and depressed rats. The results showed that the AUC and Cmax of four analytes in depressed rats were significantly different from those in normal rats and might provide helpful information to guide the clinical use of Zhi-Zi-Hou-Po to treat depression.

The sucrose nonfermenting 1 (SNF1)-related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2) genes play central roles in plant stress signal transduction. In this study, 8 SnRK2 genes were identified from the tea plant genome database and named CsSnRK2.1-8. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the CsSnRK2 genes were classifiable into three groups, similar to those of Arabidopsis thaliana, Oryza sativa and maize. The coding sequences (CDSs) of all CsSnRK2s were separated by eight introns, and their exon-intron organizations exhibited high similarity to those of other plants. The fluorescence of GFP fused with CsSnRK2.3 was detected in only the cytoplasm, while the rest of the proteins showed GFP signal in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm. The results of the expression patterns of the CsSnRK2 genes showed that CsSnRK2s were differentially induced by salt, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and abscisic acid (ABA) stress. Interestingly, The expression of CsSnRK2.3 was inhibited by ABA, suggesting the complicated roles of CsSnRK2s in the ABA signal transduction pathway. Some CsSnRK2 gene pairs showed significant expression change correlations under stresses, indicating that CsSnRK2s might exhibit synergistic effects of signal regulation in response to various stresses. In summary, this comprehensive analysis will facilitate further studies of the SnRK2 family of Camellia sinensis and provide useful information for the functional validation of CsSnRK2s.

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) function as molecular chaperones. These proteins are encoded by a multigene family whose members play crucial roles in plant growth, development and stress response. However, little is known about the HSP gene superfamily in tea plant. In this study, a total of 47 CsHSP genes were identified, including 7 CsHSP90, 18 CsHSP70, and 22 CssHSP genes. Phylogenetic and composition analyses showed that CsHSP proteins in the same subfamily have similar gene structures and conserved motifs, but significant differences exist in the different subfamilies. In addition, expression analysis revealed that almost all CsHSP genes were specifically expressed in one or more tissues, and significantly induced under heat and drought stress, implying that CsHSP genes play important roles in tea plant growth, development, and response to heat and drought stress. Furthermore, a potential interaction network dominated by CsHSPs, including HSP70/HSP90 organizing protein (HOP) and heat shock transcription factor (HSF), is closely related to the abovementioned processes. These results increase our understanding of CsHSP genes and their roles in tea plant, and thus, this study could contribute to the cloning and functional analysis of CsHSP genes and their encoded proteins in the future.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful spectroscopy technique to detect and characterize molecules at a very low concentration level. The two-dimensional (2D) semi-conductor layered material, tin diselenide (SnSe2), is used as a new substrate for enhancing the Raman signals of adsorbed molecules. Three kinds of molecules-Rhodamine 6G (R6G), crystal violet (CV), and methylene blue (MB)-are used as probe molecules to evaluate the SERS performance of SnSe2. The Raman signals of different molecules can be enhanced by SnSe2 nanoplates (NPs). The distinguishable Raman signal of R6G molecules can be obtained for adsorbent concentrations as low as 10-17 mol/L. Based on a detailed analysis of the bandgap structure and opto-electrical properties of SnSe2 NPs, we discuss the process of charge transfer and the Raman enhancement mechanism of SnSe2 NP. The high Raman sensitivity of SnSe2 NPs is related to the charge transfer between molecules and SnSe2, 2D layered structure, and indirect bandgap of few-layered SnSe2. The research results will help to expand the application of SnSe2 in microanalysis, improve the measurement accuracy of SERS, and possibly find use in optoelectronic device integration.

As a new atomically layered, two-dimensional material, tin (IV) diselenide (SnSe2) has attracted extensive attention due to its compelling application in electronics and optoelectronics. However, the great challenge of impurities and the preparation of high-quality ultrathin SnSe2 nanoflakes has hindered far-reaching research and SnSe2 practical applications so far. Therefore, a facile chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is employed to synthesize large-scale ultrathin SnSe2 flakes on mica substrates using SnSe and Se powder as precursors. The structural characteristics and crystalline quality of the product were investigated. Moreover, Raman characterizations indicate that the intensity of A1g peak and Eg peak, and the Raman shift of Eg are associated with the thickness of the SnSe2 nanoflakes. The ultrathin SnSe2 nanoflakes show a strong surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) activity for Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules. Theoretical explanations for the enhancement principle based on the chemical enhancement mechanism and charge transfer diagram between R6G and SnSe2 are provided. The results demonstrate that the ultrathin SnSe2 flakes are high-quality single crystal and can be exploited for microanalysis detection and optoelectronic application.

OBJECTIVE: We modified the conventional aortic arch replacement procedure to avoid circulation arrest and a prolonged extracorporeal circulation time, especially in cases of acute aortic dissection. We herein present our experience with a modified branch-first approach to acute aortic dissection, with anastomosis of the supra aortic vessels prior to commencing cardiopulmonary bypass. METHODS: Since 2012, 41 patients (aortic dissection, 36; arch aneurysm, 5) have undergone the modified procedure. Procedurally, the implanted graft was used as a landing zone for second-stage endovascular stent-graft deployment intended to manage the residual descending dissection. Antegrade and retrograde systemic perfusion was instituted during cardioplegic arrest. The brain was actively perfused via the graft throughout the procedure. RESULTS: Arch replacement surgery could generally be completed within approximately 4 h. During a 2-year period of aortic dissection or arch aneurysm treatment, only four anastomoses were required during the first stage of operation: two in the aorta, and one each in the innominate and left common carotid arteries. No patient died of surgical causes, and no stent grafts were deployed into the false lumen, a characteristic of procedures using traditionally antegrade deployment. CONCLUSION: We recommend that our procedure for acute aortic dissection be performed in two stages (graft replacement first and stent graft deployment second), particularly for patients underwent preoperative hypotesion. If malperfusion syndrome still exists after graft replacement, stent graft should be deployed in one stage. The arch aneurysm can be treated in one stage because there is no concern about false lumen deployment.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has a broad application prospect in the field of tumor detection owing to its ultrahigh detective sensitivity. However, SERS analysis of serum remain a challenge in terms of repeatability and stability due to the maldistribution of the silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs)-serum. With the aim to make up for this shortcoming, we report a new method for obtaining stable serum Raman signals utilizing the ordered arrays of pyramidal silicon (PSi) and Ag-NPs. We prove the practicability of this method by detecting the samples of serum from 50 lung cancer patients and 50 normal healthy people. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the serum SERS spectra shows that the spectral data of the two sample groups can form obvious and completely separated clusters. The receiver operating characteristic curve provides the sensitivity (100%) and specificity (90%) from the PCA-LDA method. This research indicates that a stable and label-free analysis technique of serum SERS based on Ag-NPs/PSi and PCA-LDA is promising for noninvasive lung cancer diagnoses.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between the expression levels of metastasis-related gene 1 (MTA1) and vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) with lymph angiogenesis and lymph node metastasis. The paraffin-embedded tissue samples of 107 cases of ESCC and 56 cases of normal esophageal tissues were collected from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Suining Central Hospital from March 2013 to January 2014. Immunohistochemical assays were performed to detect the expression levels of MTA1, VEGF-C and D2-40 in ESCC, and the micro-lymphatic vessel density (LVD) was evaluated. Their associations with various clinicopathological parameters were also analyzed. The protein expression levels of MTA1 and VEGF-C in ESCC were significantly higher compared with those in normal esophageal tissues (P<0.05); the high protein expression levels of MTA1 and VEGF-C in ESCC tissues at various tumor-node-metastasis stages exhibited statistically significant differences, as revealed by the Kruskal-Wallis test (P<0.05). The protein expression levels of MTA1 and VEGF-C in ESCC exhibited positive correlations (Spearman's ρ, r=0.512; P=0.000); the LVD level in the group with high expression of MTA1 and VEGF-C was significantly higher compared with in the low expression group (P<0.05). The comparison between MTA1 and VEGF-C protein expression levels in the group with a high rate of lymph node metastasis demonstrated statistically significant differences when compared with in the low lymph node metastasis group (P<0.05). The expression levels of MTA1 and VEGF-C in ESCC exhibited a positive correlation in ESCC, which may co-promote lymph angiogenesis and lymph node metastasis in ESCC; therefore, they may be used as biomarkers for determining the prognosis of ESCC.

The dynamic variation characteristics of seed bank and the main factors influencing the fate of Prunus divaricata seeds under the pressure of rodent predation and litter coverage were investigated with artificial soil seed banks from September, 2010 to April, 2013. It was found that there was about 48.3% of seeds germinated under the rodent predation disturbance conditions, 50% of the seeds was predated in situ or removed, and only about 4% decayed. The artificial seed bank formed a short-term persistent soil seed bank without any rodent predation disturbance, and the seeds could germinate even though they had been stored in the seed bank for three years. Soil burial provided a lower predation pressure and promoted the recruitment of wild P. divaricata seedlings, removal and predation in situ by animals was an important factor affecting the fate of seeds. At the same time, seeds removed and foraged in situ in the control and litter coverage samples were significantly less than that in the bare soil samples. Ground coverage reduced the removal and predation of seeds by rodents, but the effect was not enough to result in more seedlings. Rodent predation and removal were the main factors that could affect the seed fate and dynamics of seed bank.
