RESUMO

The rate of angular correction (ROAC) is very unpredictable and may be affected by various factors in the treatment of genu valgum and varum by means of guided growth. The purpose of this study was to assess the ROAC in cases from our institution and to identify risk factors associated with the occurrence of lower ROAC.We retrospectively reviewed the chart records of 68 patients undergoing guided growth with figure-eight plate for the correction of genu valgum and varum. Based on the data from these patients, the annual increment of physeal growth was calculated and compared with data from the Anderson chart. The associations between patient characteristics and ROAC were evaluated with the use of univariate logistic regression.The mean rate of femoral angular correction was 10.29 degrees/year, while the mean rate of tibial angular correction was 7.92 degrees/year. In a univariate logistic regression analysis, the variables associated with a higher risk of lower ROAC included non-idiopathic coronal deformity of the knee (odds ratio = 13.58, p < 0.001) and body weight at or above the 95th percentile for children (odds ratio = 2.69, p = 0.020).Obesity and non-idiopathic coronal deformity of the knee are risk factors for lower ROAC. It is still uncertain whether severity of deformity, race, and operative procedure have a substantial effect on the rate of correction.Level III evidence.

OBJECTIVE: To compared with the modified Robert Jones bandage of 3M elastic bandage, to evaluate the fitness, convenience, safety and comfort of the modular combination lower limb elastic compression device. METHODS: Forty healthy adult college students, including 28 males and 12 females, aged 16 to 25 (20.3±2.2) years old and weighing 40 to 81 (60.4±20.2) kg, were randomly divided into two groups with 40 samples in each group. According to the body surface parameters of Chinese lower limbs and guided by the concept of modularization, a group of modular combined lower limb elastic compression device was designed. Each module was combined to evaluate the fitness of the modular combined compression device in thelength and circumference of the lower limbs. The left and right lower limbs were randomly paired and divided into groups, with 40 samples in each group. The convenience of the operation time, adjustment times and required time were compared between two groups. The safety of the two groups after 24 hours of application of pressure injury was compared. The subjective pain feeling changes within 24 hours were recorded by visual analogue scale (VAS) to evaluate the comfort. RESULTS: The device was composed of several elastic compression outer lining modules with different length and width of 15 cm, an inner lining module for buffering, positioning and attaching the main body, and an elastic ankle compression module. The length of the elastic compression outer lining module covers the circumference of the human lower limbs. The length of a single outer lining module increased from 15 cm to 80 cm every 5 cm interval, and the length of a single inner lining module increased from 62 cm to 83 cm every 3 cm interval. After the modules were selected and combined, the length and circumference of the lower limbs can reach 100% fitness. The operation time of the first placement(118.23±7.33) s and re operation(60.08±5.88) s of experimental group were significantly shorter than those of control group (164.68±8.93) s and re operation (131.23±7.91) s. The adjustment times (3) and operation time (3.50±0.71) s of experimental group were significantly shorter than those of control group(11)and operation time(139.00±5.66) s (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between two groups (P>0.05). The VAS score of experimental group was significantly lower than that of control group at each time point (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The modular combined elastic compression device has good fitness, better placement and flexible adjustment, convenience and safety, and better comfort than modified Robert Jones bandage of 3M elastic bandage.

Two sterols and seven triterpenoids were isolated and identified from Ganoderma lucidum by silica gel column chromatography, preparative high-performance liquid chromatography and spectra analysis. Then, the multidrug resistance reversal activities of these compounds were assessed using MTT assay. Among these compounds, ganoderol B (3), ganoderone A (4), ganodermanondiol (6) and ganoderiol F (8) were shown to reverse the resistance of human oral epidermoid carcinoma cell line KBv200 to doxorubicin, and the reversal folds were 6.59, 4.70, 4.01 and 7.09, respectively. Ganoderiol F could increase the intracellular accumulation of doxorubicin in KBv200 cells through inhibiting P-glycoprotein transport function. Further mechanistic investigation found that ganoderiol F did not alter P-glycoprotein expression. In conclusion, ganoderiol F has potent effect in reversing P-glycoprotein mediated tumor multidrug resistance. Potential reversal agents against multidrug resistance in tumor may be found in triterpenoids from Ganoderma lucidum.

In this study, we isolated and characterized HSP70 cDNA from pufferfish (Takifugu rubripes). The 3053 bp full-length TrHSP70 sequence consisted of a 167 bp 5'-UTR (untranslated region), a 2535 bp open reading frame, and a 351 bp 3'-UTR. BLAST analysis revealed that the TrHSP70 shared high similarity with HSP70 sequences in other species. In our study, we set 3 experimental groups as H1 group (20 °C), H2 group (24 °C), and H3 group (28 °C) for checking the expression level of TrHSP70 in T. rubripes. Tissue-specific gene expression results showed that TrHSP70 had higher expression in the intestines than other tissues of the T. rubripes by RT-qPCR. In the experimental group, we found that the expression of TrHSP70 was upregulated in different tissues in the H3 group. The results show that TrHSP70 is a constitutively expressed gene, which plays an important role in maintaining normal physiological function and coping with stress.

The synthesis of the enantiomerically pure, D3-symmetric covalent hydrocarbon cages (+)-(M,M)-4 and (-)-(P,P)-4 bearing two C3-symmetrically functionalized tribenzobenzotriquinacene (TBTQ) vertices is reported. The enantiomerically pure TBTQ building blocks (+)-(M)-5 and (-)-(P)-5 were prepared via the diastereomeric TBTQ triamides obtained by use of both Boc-d- and Boc-l-phenylglycine as chiral auxiliaries.

With the increasing use of drugs in cities, the sewer is becoming the most suitable place for antibiotic accumulation and transfer. In order to reveal the occurrence and fate of antibiotic sewage during pipeline migration, we used an anaerobic reactor device to simulate the concentration change of minocycline in the sewer and its impact on the sewage quality. The results showed that 90.8 % of minocycline was removed during sewer transportation. In the presence of minocycline, although the consumption of Chemical Oxygen Demand and total nitrogen in the sewage did not change significantly, the consumption rate of total phosphorus, nitrate nitrogen and the growth rate of ammonia nitrogen at the front end of the pipeline were decreased from 29.4 %, 86.3 %, 60.3 % to 3.7 %, 81.5 %, 18.3 % respectively. Minocycline inhibited the reduction of SO42-, while also reducing the production of H2S gas and increasing the release of CH4 gas. Moreover, the decline in the abundance of functional bacteria such as phosphorus accumulating organisms was consistent with the consumption of sewage nutrients. This experiment provides data support for the risk of wastewater leakage of medical and pharmaceutical wastewater into domestic sewage, and will helps to maintain the safe operation of actual sewage pipes.

With China's aging society, the number of patients with hemiplegia caused by cerebrovascular accident is increasing gradually. The risk of hip fracture in the first year after the onset of this kind of patients is 4 times higher than that of ordinary people, and most of them occur in the side of hemiplegia. For senile femoral neck fracture, artificial joint replacement is almost the first choice of treatment, with mature operation technology and good curative effect. At present, it is considered that if the muscle strength of hemiplegic side can reach grade III after cerebral vascular accident, hip arthroplasty can be the first choice for hemiplegic patients with hemiplegic femoral neck fracture. However, the situation of hemiplegic patients is different from that of ordinary people. The hemiplegic limbs may have muscle atrophy, muscle strength imbalance, osteoporosis and other problems, which brings difficulties to the formulation of surgical plan. This paper mainly discusses the choice of surgical approach, the use of total hip arthroplasty or hemiarthroplasty, the use of cemented prosthesis or cementless prosthesis, and how to reduce the incidence of postoperative dislocation The purpose is to provide more reference evidence for orthopedic doctors in clinical decision-making.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients have a lower 5-year survival rate, and the distant tumor metastasis and drug resistance are the main reasons for the high mortality. RECQL5, a member of RecQ helicases family, has been linked to tumorigenesis of various cancers expect NSCLC. In the current study, analysis with the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) dataset showed that the level of RECQL5 was elevated in LUAD (Lung Adenocarcinoma) and LUSC (lung squamous carcinomas), two major subtypes of NSCLC, which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry staining on Tissue array slides. The level of RECQL5 was also elevated in NSCLC cell lines. Further, Kaplan-Meier analysis of TCGA dataset suggested that the up-regulated RECQL5 was associated with poor prognosis of LUAD, but not with that of LUSC. Knockdown of RECQL5 significantly inhibited the invasion and migration of NSCLC cells, and suppressed epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) as indicated by the changes of EMT-related proteins, while overexpression of RECQL5 displayed reverse effects. Lung metastasis was also suppressed by RECQL5 knockdown. Additionally, the addition of Akt inhibitor LY294002 reversed the effects of RECQL5 overexpression on cell migration, invasion and EMT. Moreover, knockdown of RECQL5 increased the apoptosis of cisplatin-resistant A549 cell line (A549/DDP) caused by cisplatin treatment. In summary, RECQL5 contributed to the metastasis of NSCLC and assisted NSCLC cells incompletely response to cisplatin therapy, and could be considered as a biomarker or clinical target for NSCLC.

BACKGROUND: Horseshoe kidney (HK) with renal stones is challenging for urologists. Although both retroperitoneal and transperitoneal laparoscopic approaches have been reported in some case reports, the therapeutic outcome of retroperitoneal compared with transperitoneal laparoscopic lithotripsy is unknown. AIM: To assess the efficacy of laparoscopic lithotripsy for renal stones in patients with HK. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 12 patients with HK and a limited number (n ≤ 3) of 20-40 mm renal stones treated with either retroperitoneal or transperitoneal laparoscopic lithotripsy (June 2012 to May 2019). The perioperative data of both groups were compared including operation time, estimated blood loss, postoperative fasting time, perioperative complications and stone-free rate (SFR). RESULTS: No significant difference was observed for age, gender, preoperative symptoms, body mass index, preoperative infection, hydronephrosis degree, largest stone diameter, stone number and isthmus thickness. The mean postoperative fasting time of the patients in the retroperitoneal group and the transperitoneal group was 1.29 ± 0.49 and 2.40 ± 0.89 d, respectively (P = 0.019). There was no significant difference in operation time (194.29 ± 102.48 min vs 151.40 ± 39.54 min, P = 0.399), estimated blood loss (48.57 ± 31.85 mL vs 72.00 ± 41.47 mL, P = 0.292) and length of hospital stay (12.14 ± 2.61 d vs 12.40 ± 3.21 d, P = 0.881) between the retroperitoneal and transperitoneal groups. All patients in both groups had a complete SFR and postoperative renal function was within the normal range. The change in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) from the preoperative stage to postoperative day 1 in the retroperitoneal group and the transperitoneal group was -3.86 ± 0.69 and -2.20 ± 2.17 mL/(min·1.73 m2), respectively (P = 0.176). From the preoperative stage to the 3-mo follow-up, the absolute change in eGFR values for patients in the retroperitoneal group and the transperitoneal group was -3.29 ± 1.11 and -2.40 ± 2.07 mL/(min·1.73 m2), respectively (P = 0.581). CONCLUSION: Both retroperitoneal and transperitoneal laparoscopic lithotripsy seem to be safe and effective for HK patients with a limited number of 20-40 mm renal stones.

Sexual interference between male and female function in hermaphrodite plants is reduced by protandry. In environments with insufficient pollinator service, prolongation of male function owing to limited pollen removal could restrict the duration of female function and lower seed production. We provide evidence that this form of sexual conflict has played a role in the spread of females in gynodioecious populations of Cyananthus delavayi in the pollen-limited environments in which this subalpine species occurs. Using field experiments involving artificial pollen removal from the strongly protandrous flowers of hermaphrodites, we demonstrated a trade-off between male- and female-phase duration with no influence on overall floral longevity. Pollen removal at the beginning of anthesis resulted in hermaphrodite seed production matching that of females. In contrast, restricted pollen removal increased the duration of male function at the expense of female function lowering maternal fertility compared to females. This pattern was evident in five populations with females experiencing a twofold average seed fertility advantage compared to hermaphrodites. Gynodioecy often appears to evolve from protandrous ancestors and pollen limitation is widespread in flowering plants suggesting that sexual conflict may play an unappreciated role in the evolution of this form of sexual dimorphism.

Lists of species underpin many fields of human endeavour, but there are currently no universally accepted principles for deciding which biological species should be accepted when there are alternative taxonomic treatments (and, by extension, which scientific names should be applied to those species). As improvements in information technology make it easier to communicate, access, and aggregate biodiversity information, there is a need for a framework that helps taxonomists and the users of taxonomy decide which taxa and names should be used by society whilst continuing to encourage taxonomic research that leads to new species discoveries, new knowledge of species relationships, and the refinement of existing species concepts. Here, we present 10 principles that can underpin such a governance framework, namely (i) the species list must be based on science and free from nontaxonomic considerations and interference, (ii) governance of the species list must aim for community support and use, (iii) all decisions about list composition must be transparent, (iv) the governance of validated lists of species is separate from the governance of the names of taxa, (v) governance of lists of accepted species must not constrain academic freedom, (vi) the set of criteria considered sufficient to recognise species boundaries may appropriately vary between different taxonomic groups but should be consistent when possible, (vii) a global list must balance conflicting needs for currency and stability by having archived versions, (viii) contributors need appropriate recognition, (ix) list content should be traceable, and (x) a global listing process needs both to encompass global diversity and to accommodate local knowledge of that diversity. We conclude by outlining issues that must be resolved if such a system of taxonomic list governance and a unified list of accepted scientific names generated are to be universally adopted.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women, and metastasis is the leading cause of death in breast cancer patients. Previous studies have shown that epithelial­mesenchymal transition (EMT) is involved in the metastasis of breast cancer, but the metabolic reprogramming and regulation mechanisms involved in the EMT process are still unclear. In the present study, we successfully constructed an EMT cell model induced by transforming growth factor ß1 (TGF­ß1) treatment of MCF­7 cells at different times. The results showed that cell adhesion decreased, cell invasion increased and ATP levels increased in EMT MCF­7 cells treated with TGF­ß1. Furthermore, the expression of fatty acid synthase (FASN) was decreased, and the expression of key fatty acid ß­oxidation enzymes (CPT1 and CD36) was elevated in treated cells compared to control cells. These results showed that the fatty acid oxidation pathway was enhanced. In addition, the expression of NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase subunit B8 (NDUFB8), mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COXI) increased, and the mitochondrial DNA copy number and ROS levels were also significantly increased during TGF­ß1­induced EMT. These results indicated that mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) activity was enhanced during EMT. In addition, we observed that the expression of p­AMPK was increased and ACC (Acetyl­CoA Carboxylase) was decreased during TGF­ß1­induced EMT in MCF­7 cells. Immunohistochemical analysis of clinical samples revealed high expression of FASN in epithelial cells that had high expression of E­cadherin, while high expression of CPT­1 was observed in mesenchymal cells that had high expression of vimentin. Results of the current study showed a metabolic transition in TGF­ß1­induced EMT in MCF­7 cells. This transition may regulate fatty acid oxidation and OXPHOS activity in EMT MCF­7 cells through the p­AMPK pathway. These data suggest that a metabolic transition that suppresses lipogenesis and favors energy production is an essential component of TGF­ß1­induced EMT and metastasis in breast cancer. This study thus provides a new strategy for identifying new therapeutic targets for breast cancer.

Sexual interaction is an important activity that determines the reproductive schedule of organisms and can ultimately influence the fitness traits of both sexes. Although the influence of sexual interaction on the fitness of females has been extensively determined, little is known about the effects on males, which often have different mating strategies and optimal mating regimes from those of females. To understand how mating regimes (timing and frequency) modulate the fitness in both sexes, we used spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) to investigate the influence of delayed mating and repeated mating on the fitness of male and female. For females, the unmated and the delayed mating females outlived those mated immediately after adult emergence. The repeated mating shortened the lifespan of females that mated at 1-day-old, but not that mated 7-day-old. However, no significant variation in lifespan was observed for males across different mating regimes. We found although delayed mating significantly reduced the daily reproductive rate of the females, there was no significant difference in lifetime reproduction of females across treatments because the delayed mating females increased their reproductive lifespan as a compensation. Our study highlighted that the time and frequency of sexual interaction showed a sex-specific consequence on male and female spider mites, indicating that sexual interaction incurs a higher cost to females which have a much lower optimal mating frequency than males.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of cholecystectomy on the occurrence of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: The present study was a case-control study with a retrospective, cross-sectional, and longitudinal study design. The clinical data for knee osteoarthritis in the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from January 2016 to September 2018 was analyzed. Clinical data, including gender, age, height, weight, smoking, alcohol abuse, prior medical history, and previous surgical history, were recorded. A logistic regression model was used for the univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: A total of 1659 patients with KOA (KOA group) and 1195 limb fracture patients (control group) were included in this study. Among the 1659 patients with KOA, 388 patients were male and 1271 were female, while among the 1195 patients in the control group, 638 patients were male and 557 patients were female. The period between cholecystectomy and knee osteoarthritis onset ranged from 0.5 years to 17 years; the average interval time was 8.73 ± 2.11 years. The age at disease onset was significantly older when compared to the control group, while the body mass index in the KOA group was significantly higher when compared to the control group (P < 0.05). There were 97 patients undergoing cholecystectomy in the KOA group and there were 15 patients undergoing cholecystectomy in the control group. The proportion of cholecystectomy in the two groups was statistically significant. After the univariate analysis, there was a statistically significant difference in distribution between the two groups (P < 0.05). The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that there was a significant difference in the distribution of these two groups (P < 0.05), indicating that cholecystectomy is associated with the occurrence of KOA. CONCLUSION: There is a close relationship between cholecystectomy and KOA. However, the specific mechanism remains unknown and should be further researched.

Purpose: Over the past decades, quantum dots (QDs) have shown the broad application in diverse fields, especially in intracellular probing and drug delivery, due to their high fluorescence intensity, long fluorescence lifetime, strong light-resistant bleaching ability, and strong light stability. Therefore, we explore a kind of therapeutic potential against cancer with fluorescent imaging. Methods: In the current study, a new type of QDs (QDs@L-Cys-TAEA-5-FUA) capped with L-cysteine (L-Cys) and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TAEA) ligands, and conjugated with 5-fluorouracil-1-acetic acid (5-FUA) has been synthesized. Ligands were characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and H-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. The modified QDs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet and visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), and fluorescence microscopy. And the biological activity of modified QDs was explored by using MTT assay with HeLa, SMMC-7721 HepG2, and QSG-7701 cells. The fluorescence imaging of modified QDs was obtained by fluorescence microscope. Results: The modified QDs are of controllable sizes in the range of 4-5 nm and they possess strong optical emission properties. UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra demonstrated that the L-Cys-TAEA-5-FUA was successfully incorporated into QD nanoparticles. The MTT results demonstrated that L-Cys-TAEA-5-FUA modified QDs could efficiently inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells as compared to the normal cells, illustrating their antitumor efficacy. The mechanistic studies revealed that the effective internalization of modified QDs inside cancer cells could inhibit their proliferation, through excessive production of intracellular reactive oxygen species, leading to apoptosis process. Conclusion: The present study suggests that modified QDs can enter cells efficiently and could be employed as therapeutic agents for the treatment of various types of cancers with fluorescent imaging.
