In plants, macroautophagy/autophagy has mainly been associated with stress-related processes but how it impacts normal physiological and developmental processes remains largely unexplored. Pollen germination is the critical first step toward fertilization in flowering plants. It is metabolically demanding and relies on high levels of cytoplasmic reorganization activities to support a dramatic morphological transformation that underlies the development of a pollen tube as the conduit to deliver sperm for fertilization. The role of autophagy in this process remains unclear. Here we provide evidence that pollen germination is accompanied by elevated autophagic activity and successful pollen tube emergence depends on autophagy-mediated cytoplasmic deletion. Genetic and cytological experiments demonstrate that inhibition of autophagy prevents pollen germination while induces the persistence of a layer of undegraded cytoplasm at the germination aperture. Together, these results unveil a novel compartmentalized autophagy. Furthermore, high-throughput comparative lipidomic analyses show that suppressed autophagy-induced inhibition of pollen germination is accompanied by altered profiles of stored and signaling lipids. Proteomic analyses reveal that autophagy likely exert its role in pollen germination via downstream mitochondria-related pathways. This pre-post intervention study was conducted in Neonatal Intensive Care Units in two Chinese hospitals. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of intracavitary electrocardiogram (IC-ECG)-guided peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement and tip positioning in premature infants. A total of 161 premature infants who required a PICC were enrolled and divided into two groups: pre-intervention group (n = 83) from October 2017 to July 2018 and post-intervention IC-ECG group (n = 78) from August 2018 to March 2019. Nurses were trained from May 2018 to July 2018. The reposition rate in the IC-ECG group and pre-interventions group was 3.85% and 19.28%, respectively (OR 5.970; 95% CI 1.666-21.395; p = 0.002). More infants achieved optimal tip position at the first attempt in the IC-ECG group than the pre-intervention group (93.59% vs 73.49%; OR 0.190; 95%CI 0.068-0.531; p = 0.001). The overall catheter-related complications in the pre-intervention group were 14.46% compared to 3.84% in the IC-ECG group (OR 2.962; 95%CI 1.013-8.661; p = 0.040). However, no significant differences were observed between the individual complication leakage, phlebitis and catheter-related blood stream infection.Conclusions: IC-ECG-guided peripherally inserted central catheter placement and tip positioning technology might decrease reposition rates, achieve more accurate tip positioning at the first attempt and might reduce catheter-related complications in premature infants. Further robust RCTs are needed to confirm the effectiveness of IC-ECG-guided PICC placement and tip positioning in neonates.What is Known:• Chest radiography is the gold standard for tip position confirmation of peripherally inserted central catheter placement.• Studies in adult patients have shown that electrocardiogram guidance in the placement of central venous catheters can be beneficial, while evidence in neonates is limited.What is New:• Intracavitary electrocardiogram-guided peripherally inserted central catheter placement might be superior to chest radiography in preterm infants.• Decreasing the repositioning rates and correct tip position of peripherally inserted central catheters might reduce catheter-related complications.

Exercise preconditioning may protect against cardiac injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), but the mechanism is unresolved. The aim of this study is to explore whether the general control nonderepressible 2 (GCN2) kinase gene is associated with the protective effect of exercise preconditioning. Eight-week-old male C57BL/6J (n = 40) and GCN2 knockout (KO) (n = 40) mice were divided into four groups: control, LPS (L), exercise preconditioning (E), and exercise preconditioning LPS (EL). Mice in the exercise groups performed exercise for eight weeks. After exercise, all mice were given an equal volume of LPS or saline (10 µg/g). We measured the cardiac function using echocardiography and then collected heart tissue. Exercise preconditioning improved cardiac inflammation (interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor α) and cardiac dysfunction (ejection fraction, fraction shortening) in C57 mice induced by LPS and also decreased the expression levels of GCN2, phosphorylation of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (p-eIF2α), and activating transcription factor 4 (ATF4). Moreover, GCN2 KO decreased inflammation and cardiac dysfunction induced by LPS in sedentary mice. The inflammation and cardiac dysfunction in the GCN2 KO EL group were lower than in the C57 EL group, and the expression of GCN2, p-eIF2α, and ATF4 in the GCN2 KO EL group was lower than in the C57 EL group. Exercise preconditioning alleviated cardiac injury induced by LPS. GCN2 KO also improved cardiac injury. Exercise preconditioning promoted the effect of GCN2 KO in alleviating cardiac injury, and the GCN2 and eIF2α/ATF4 pathways play an important role in the process.

Twelve lakes and reservoirs with different water depths and different water residence times were studied to identify the applicability of bioavailable phosphorus of sediments in indicating trophic levels. Water and sediment samples were collected in these 12 lakes and reservoirs to analyze the relationship of nutrient levels between the sediment and the water column. Sodium hydroxide extracted phosphorus (NaOH-P) determined using the SMT classification method is defined as the bioavailable phosphorus of sediment. The results showed that total phosphorus levels in sediments in different lakes and reservoirs ranged from 225 to 760 mg·kg-1 (mean value 502 mg·kg-1); the NaOH-P levels in sediments ranged from 86 to 584 mg·kg-1 (mean value 263 mg·kg-1); the total phosphorus concentrations in the water was 0.02-0.35 mg·L-1 (mean value 0.11 mg·L-1), and the chlorophyll a concentrations in the water were 3-349 µg·L-1 (mean value 51 µg·L-1). It was found that NaOH-P was more effective than total phosphorus in indicating the trophic status of the lakes and reservoirs. However, the NaOH-P levels were significantly related to the phosphorus concentrations in the water column only in shallow water with a long residence time. It was revealed that water residence time and water depth are two key factors that affect the relationship of the phosphorus content between the sediment and the water column. In deep waters or waters with short residence time, the NaOH-P content in the sediment hardly influenced the phosphorus concentration in the water columns, even at high levels. However, in shallow waters with long residence time, the sediment acted as both sources and sinks and frequently exchanged nutrients with the overlying water, especially during bloom periods in summer. Thus NaOH-P could be a potential risk of eutrophication in such waters.

Background: Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains highly prevalent and is one of the largest causes of death worldwide. Blood stasis syndrome (BSS) is the main syndrome associated with CHD. However, the underlying biological basis of BSS with CHD is not yet been fully understood. Materials and Methods: We proposed a metabolomics method based on 1H-NMR and random forest (RF) models to elucidate the underlying biological basis of BSS with CHD. Firstly, 58 cases of CHD patients, including 27 BSS and 31 phlegm syndrome (PS), and 26 volunteers were recruited from Xiangya Hospital affiliated to Central South University. A 1 mL venous blood sample was collected for NMR analysis. Secondly, principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) and RF was applied to observe the classification of each group, respectively. Finally, RF and multidimensional scaling (MDS) were utilized to discover the plasma potential biomarkers in CHD patients and CHD-BSS patients. Results: The models constructed by RF could visually discriminate BSS from PS in CHD patients. Simultaneously, we obtained 12 characteristic metabolites, including lysine, glutamine, taurine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, histidine, lipid, citrate, choline, lactate, α-glucose, ß-glucose related to the CHD patients, and Choline, ß-glucose, α-glucose and tyrosine were considered as potential biomarkers of CHD-BSS. Conclusion: The combining of 1H-NMR profiling with RF models was a useful approach to analyze complex metabolomics data (should be deleted). Choline, ß-glucose, α-glucose and tyrosine were considered as potential biomarkers of CHD-BSS.

Coriandrum sativum L. is well known around the world because of its food and medicine uses. The main bioactive constituents in C. sativum are essential oil, fatty acids, tocol, sterol and carotenoids, their yields and chemical compositions being influenced by genotype, variety, planting season, ecotype, planting condition, growth stage, plant part, harvesting time, extracting process and other factors. Coriander and its different extracts possess varying degrees of antioxidative and antimicrobial activities on account of different active constituents. The general usages, chemical compositions and bioactivities of coriander are summarized in this review, along with safety considerations.

BACKGROUND: Ventana ALK (D5F3) screening of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene rearrangement in tissue specimens has been approved by US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to select treatment for non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). However, tumor tissues are often not readily obtainable, and cytology specimens and may be the only tumor material available for diagnosis and molecular marker analysis. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of ALK immunocytochemistry (ICC) on ThinPrep slides and determined a suitable scoring system for interpretation of the results. METHODS: One hundred twenty-one fine-needle aspirate (FNA) specimens from metastatic lesions of NSCLC were analyzed. ALK rearrangement was detected on ThinPrep cytology slides using the Ventana immunocytochemistry ALK-D5F3 system, which adopts two scoring systems for interpretation of the ICC results. The results were subsequently confirmed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). RESULTS: Among the 121 ICC specimens, 16 that were considered ALK-positive by either scoring system were referred for PCR analysis. Among the ALK ICC-negative cases, 33 had correlated FISH ALK results. A total of 49 specimens that exhibited either a positive or negative ICC result with a correlated ALK status were analyzed statistically. ICC results showed a high concordance rate with the results of PCR/FISH analysis. The sensitivity and specificity of ALK ICC by the binary scoring algorithm were 68.75 and 96.97%, respectively. These values increased to 93.75 and 96.97%, respectively, when interpreted by the semiquantified interpretation system. CONCLUSIONS: ALK ICC analysis on ThinPrep slides is a reliable ALK testing method, and the semiquantified interpretation system on cytology specimens is recommended rather than the binary scoring algorithm on tissue specimens.

Background: The traditional Chinese medicine formula Jiu Wei Zhen Xin Granula (JWZXG) is prescribed to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in China. This study was to assess the efficacy and safety of JWZXG in patients with GAD. Method: Data were pooled from 14 randomized controlled trials involving the assessment of mean changes of Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) total scores, response rates, adverse event rates, quality, publication bias, and risk of bias. Results: Pooled analysis showed no significant difference in response rate (risk ratio 1.01, 95% CI [0.93-1.08]; Z test = 0.17, P = 0.86) and no significant difference between JWZXG group and azapirones group (RR 0.69, 95% CI [0.45, 1.06]; Z test = 1.69, P = 0.09) in rate of adverse events. Though no difference exists between JWZXG group and azapirones group in HAMA total score from baseline, JWZXG group was inferior to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) group (WMD -0.93, 95% CI [-1.64, -0.23]; Z test = 2.6, P = 0.009) which had more adverse events than JWZXG group (RR 0.64, 95% CI [0.46, 0.89]; Z test = 2.63, P = 0.009). Conclusions: This meta-analysis preliminarily suggests that JWZXG is as effective as azapirones, though having the same possibility of suffering AEs. JWZXG was inferior to SSRIs but causes fewer AEs in the treatment of GAD.

The objective of this study was to explore the roles of macrophages in the regeneration of injured skeletal muscle and the mechanisms involved. Mice were randomly divided into the following groups: muscle contusion (S), muscle contusion control (SCon), macrophages depleted (T) and macrophages depleted control (TCon) groups. Muscle contusion model was created by high-energy blunt injury. Macrophages depletion model was constructed by injection of clodronate-liposomes. Their gastrocnemius muscles were harvested at the time points of 1, 3, 7 and 14 d post-injury. The changes in skeletal muscle morphology were assessed by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and Masson's trichrome staining. The mRNA and protein levels of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and oxidative stress factors were analyzed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RCR) and Western blotting, respectively. HE staining results showed that a small amount of regenerating myofibers were observed in the S group (14 d post-injury), whereas a large number of regenerating muscle fibers were observed in the T group. Quantitative analyses showed that the sizes of regenerating myofibers were significantly smaller in the T group as compared with the S group at 14 d post-injury (P < 0.05). At the same time, Masson staining results showed that macrophage depletion significantly increased the area of fibrosis as compared with the S group at 14 d post-injury (P < 0.01). The expression levels of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and oxidative stress factors were increased significantly after muscle injury. Moreover, macrophage depletion increased the expressions of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and oxidative stress factors as compared with the S group during the later stage of injury (7-14 d post-injury). These results suggest that macrophages depletion can aggravate fibrosis and impair muscle regeneration, and inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and oxidative stress factors may be involved in this process.

Kuraridin is an active natural prenylated flavonoid ingredient originating from the well-known traditional Chinese medicine Sophora flavescens Ait., that possesses various bioactivities, such as antitumor activity, PLCγ1 inhibitory activity, glycosidase inhibitory activity, etc. However, there is no report on the plasma metabolic profile and pharmacokinetic study of kuraridin. The current study was designed to use an ultra-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) method for the quantification and characterization metabolites in rat plasma after oral administration of kuraridin. A liquid-liquid extraction method with ethyl acetate-acetonitrile (1:3) was used to extract the kuraridin from rat plasma samples. The chromatographic separation was carried out on a Hypersil GOLD UHPLC C18 column equipped with a C18 guard cartridge using a gradient elution with organic solvent-water as mobile phase. Based on comparing the retention times with reference standards or on the basis of MS2 fragmentation behaviors, a total of 19 metabolites were identified or tentatively characterized from rat plasma. Under the optimized conditions, the method showed good linearity (r² > 0.99) over the ranges of 1-500 ng/mL for kuraridin. The inter- and intra-day precisions were less than 8.95%, and the accuracy was in the range of -6.27-6.48%. The recovery of kuraridin ranged from 90.1% to 100.4%. The developed UHPLC-MS/MS method was thus successfully applied in the qualitative of metabolites and quantitative analysis of kuraridin in rat plasma.

Angiogenesis is a dynamic, multi-step process. It is known that about 70 diseases are related to angiogenesis. Both the experimental and the literature reports showed that Sophora flavescens inhibit angiogenesis significantly, but the material basis and the mechanism of action have not been clear. In this study, molecular docking was used for screening of anti-angiogenesis flavonoids from the roots of S. flavescens. One handred and twenty-six flavonoids selected from S. flavescens were screened in the docking ligand database with six targets(VEGF-a,TEK,KDR,Flt1,FGFR1 and FGFR2) as the receptors. In addition, the small-molecule approved drugs of targets from DrugBank database were set as a reference with minimum score of each target's approved drugs as threshold. The LibDock module in Discovery Studio 2.5 (DS2.5) software was applied to screen the compounds. As a result, 37 compounds were screened out that their scores were higher than the minimum score of approved drugs as well as being in the top of 10%. At last the mechanism of flavonoids anti-angiogenesis was preliminarily revealed, which provided a new method for the development of angiogenesis inhibitor drugs.

INTRODUCTION: Studies have been conducted to investigate the association between rs10830963 of MTNR1B and the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), but with inconclusive results. We aimed to clarify these controversies, especially with regard to the association in the Chinese population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systemic literature reference search inclusive to August 12, 2016 yielded 35 articles, from which 11 studies met the inclusion criteria for the final meta-analysis, including 3889 patients with GDM and 6708 controls. RESULTS: We found statistically significant associations between rs10830963 and GDM using odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) [GG genotype vs. CC genotype: OR = 1.70, 95% CI: 1.38-2.10; G allele vs C allele: OR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.20-1.36; GG+CG vs. CC (dominant model): OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.20-1.44; GG vs CG+CC (recessive model): OR = 1.41, 95% CI: 1.26-1.58]. In subgroup analyses stratified by ethnicity, we also observed rs10830963 to be associated with significantly increased risk of GDM in all genetic models in the Chinese population. CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis indicated that the rs10830963 polymorphism might serve as a risk factor of GDM in the Chinese population.

A new flavonoid, 8-(3-hydroxymethyl-2-butenyl)-5,7,2',4'-tetrahydroxyflavanone (1), along with seven known compounds, (2R)-3α,7,4'-Trihydroxy -5-methoxy-8-prenylflavanone (2), (2R)-3ß,7,4'- Trihydroxy-5-methoxy-8-prenylflavanone (3), 3,7-dihydroxycoumarin (4), Shandougenines B (5), Specionin (6), Kushenol N (7) and Kushenol I (8) were isolated from the roots of Sophora flavescens. Among them, Compound 5 was isolated from Leguminous plants, and compounds 4 and 6 were isolated from Sophora flavescens for the first time. Their structures were elucidated by the aid of NMR, HRMS, HMBC and CD spectroscopic methods.

The aim of the present study was to determine the ferulic acid (FA) content of Radix Angelicae Sinensis (AS), Danggui-Buxue-Tang (DBT) and Danggui-Sini-Tang (DST) using the same ultra performance liquid chromatography system and method. FA was eluted using an Acquity BEH C18 column (100×2.1 mm inner diameter; 1.7 µm). A mobile phase of methanol and 0.5% acetic acid was used and a flow rate of 0.3 ml/min was selected. The calibration curve exhibited a good linear regression (R2=0.9997). The inter- and intra-day precision measurements of FA ranged between 0.27 and 3.03% and the recovery ranged between 98.44 and 101.64% with relative standard deviation (RSD) values ≤4.73%. The method was reliable and simple. The results of the chromatographic analyses indicate that the FA contents of the DBT and DST decoctions were increased compared with that of AS due to the presence of other herbs.

In this study, we used traditional morphological and molecular identification methods to preliminarily identify two strains of dermatophytes. The two strains were observed under the microscope. And then the dermatophytes were cultured on Sabouraud's dextrose agar (SDA). The 18S rRNA regions of the two dermatophyte strains were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and the PCR products were sequenced and compared with GenBank data. BLAST tools and DNAMAN software were used to analyze the sequences. To further determine highly homologous sequences, a phylogenetic tree was constructed using the Neighbor-Joining method. The two strains of dermatophytes were identified by traditional morphological identification as Epidermophyton floccosum and Microsporum ferrugineum. The 18S rRNA sequence analyses showed high similarities to Cladosporium cladosporioides isolate C115LM-UFPR and Ascomycete sp. LB68A1A2. Epidermophyton and Cladosporium belong to dermatophyte, while Microsporum ferrugineum and Ascomycete belong to microsporum. The two novel strains of dermatophytes were therefore identified as Cladosporium cladosporioides isolate C115LM-UFPR (JN650537, Cladosporium) and Ascomycete sp. LB68A1A2 (AY770409, Ascomycete sp).

In this study, we evaluated cytomorphologic features of different subgroups of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS); we compared seven cytologic features between DCIS and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) aspirates to determine whether diagnosis of stromal invasion can be made based on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) findings. There were 142 cases of DCIS and 1,978 cases of IDC enrolled in our study. FNA analysis revealed 80.3% sensitivity for DCIS and 94.7% sensitivity for IDC. High and intermediate grade DCIS exhibited marked nuclear abnormality (92.1% vs. 35.7%, 30.0%; P1 < 0.001, P2 < 0.001) and necrosis (69.7% vs. 0%, 10.0%; P1 < 0.001, P2 = 0.001) in a higher percentage of cases compared to low grade DCIS and intraductal/intracystic papillary carcinoma. The rates of background macrophages (71.3% for DCIS and 21.9% for IDC, P < 0.001) and extensive necrosis (54.0% for DCIS and 16.7% for IDC, P < 0.001) were significantly higher in DCIS compared to IDC. Lymphocytes were observed in conjunction with tumor cells more frequently in IDC (81.3%) compared to DCIS (36.8%, P < 0.001). Stromal fragments associated with tumor cells were only observed in invasive lesions (11.9% micro-invasive DCIS and 52.1% IDC). Tubular structures were found exclusively in IDC (11.5%). Cytologic criteria for diagnosis of high and low grade DCIS are different. The suspicion of DCIS is raised when background macrophages and extensive necrosis are observed. Stromal invasion is suggested by FNA if lymphocytes are entwined around tumor cells or if stromal fragments associated with tumor cells or tubular structures are observed.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the value of cytokeratin 20 (CK20) immunocytochemical (ICC) detection in the urine liquid-based cytological specimens in diagnosis of urothelial carcinoma (UC). METHODS: The study consisted of prospective and retrospective groups. In the prospective group, voided urine samples were collected from patients with a variety of urological conditions and healthy individuals. Urine cytological diagnosis and CK20 ICC were performed on the collected specimens. In the retrospective group, archived urine slides with cytological diagnoses of atypical urothelial cells (AUC), suspicious carcinoma (SuCA) and carcinoma (CA) were selected. Then they were re-stained immunocytochemically with monoclonal antibody against CK20 after decolorization. Histological diagnosis and clinical follow-up result were used as the gold standard for analysis. RESULTS: There were 136 cases in the prospective group, including 89 cases of UC, 19 cases of other urogenital malignancies, 12 cases of benign lesions and 16 cases of normal control. The sensitivity of CK20 ICC in detection of UC was 75.3%, significantly higher than that of LBC (48.3%, P < 0.001). The positive rate of CK20 was 64.7% (22/34) in G1 UC, 73.3% (22/30) in G2 UC, and 91.3% (21/23) in G3 UC (P < 0.001). The specificity of CK20 ICC was 91.5%, the same as that of LBC. There were 163 cases in retrospective group, including 119 cases of UC, 17 cases of other urogenital malignancies and 27 cases of benign lesions. The cytological diagnoses of them were 68 cases of CA, 47 cases of SuCA and 48 cases of AUC. The positive rates of CK20 ICC in UC and non-UC (other urogenital malignancies and benign lesions) cases were 90.8% and 15.9%, respectively, with a statistically very significant difference (P < 0.001). The LBC of all the 119 cases of UC included 62 (52.1%) cases of CA, 35 (29.4%) cases of SuCA and 22 (18.5%) cases of AUC. The positive rates of CK20 in the LBC-diagnosed CA, SuCA and AUC were 96.8%, 97.1% and 63.6%, respectively. The LBC of all the 44 non-UC cases included 6 (13.6%) cases of CA, 12 (27.3%) cases of SuCA and 26 (59.1%) cases of AUC, and the positive rates of CK20 in the LBC-diagnosed CA, SuCA and AUC were 33.3%, 33.3% and 3.8%, respectively. The differences of UC and non-UC cases between the corresponding categories of LBC were significant (P < 0.0001, respectively). CONCLUSION: CK20 immunocytochemistry as an auxiliary method to urine liquid-based cytology can increase the sensitivity in detection of urothelial carcinomas.

Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) protects cardiac function against ischemia-reperfusion injury through gene transfection, although it is not a clinically practical and economical method. This study investigated whether heat stress-induced HSP70 protects heterotopically transplanted donor hearts. A total of 60 donor rats were randomly divided into 6 groups. Five of those received heat stress and one was a control group. Donor hearts were heterotopically transplanted into recipient rats at five time points, following the heat stress (0, 24, 48, 96 and 192 h). The levels of HSP70 expression in donor hearts and the variation of myocardial enzymes in receptor blood or donor hearts were measured 24 h after transplantation. The donated hearts were also examined under a microscope for pathological changes. HSP70 expression was the highest in the 24-h group (p≤0.01) and decreased gradually in the 48- and 96-h groups. No statistically significant difference was found in the HSP70 expression in the control, the 0- and 192-h groups (p≥0.05). Of all the groups, the 24-h group had the lowest lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase muscle band concentrations in receptor blood. Moreover, this group showed the lowest malondialdehyde concentration and the highest atriphosphate concentration (p≤0.01), demonstrated by the mildest inflammatory injury in the transplanted hearts. We found a time-dose-effect relationship among heat stress, HSP70 and the protection of donor hearts. Heat stress is a practical method that can be clinically applied to protect donor hearts against ischemia-reperfusion injury by inducing endogenous HSP70, which indicates the future direction of clinical practice.

An in situ field high-frequency bio-optical measurement was carried out in the littoral region in Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu, a large shallow lake of China from 24 July to 1 August in 2010. The underwater irradiance, beam attenuation coefficient and absorption coefficient, the related physical-chemical and meteorological parameters were measured and analyzed, in order to determine the relationship between water bio-optical properties and wind waves process. The absorption coefficients of particles a(p) (440), non-phytoplankton a(d) (440), phytoplankton a(ph) (440) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) a(CDOM) (440) were 3.97, 3.97, 6.58 m(-1); 1.69, 2.17, 4.20 m(-1); 2.28, 1.80, 1.33 m(-1); 1.05, 1.04, 1.08 m(-1) with the corresponding 30-minute average wind speed of <3, 3-5 and >5 m x s(-1) under small, middle and large wind and waves, respectively. Phytoplankton particles contributed the most to total absorption coefficient integrated over a range of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) (400-700 nm) with a value of 42.5% during small wind waves. With the increase of wind speed, the relative contributions of phytoplankton, CDOM and pure water deceased but the relative contribution of non-phytoplankton significantly increased with the values of 33.0%, 41.7% and 52.0% during small, middle and large wind waves, respectively. A significantly positive linear relationship was found between PAR diffuse attenuation coefficients and the mean wind speed within 10 minutes. Sediment resuspension caused by wind waves had a significant effect on PAR diffuse attenuation coefficient. From small wind waves to large wind waves, PAR diffuse attenuation increased 80.0% but the euphotic depth decreased 42.2%. Significant linear relationships were found between PAR diffuse attenuation coefficient, the beam attenuation coefficients at 750 nm, total suspended solid concentration and wind speed, wave height, wave shear stress, in which the correlation between PAR attenuation coefficients and meteorological hydrology factors was most significant. High-frequency bio-optical measurement showed that hydrodynamic process significantly affected the short-term variation of bio-optical properties in algal-dominated lake region of shallow lake through sediment resuspension, mixing and migration of phytoplankton.

OBJECTIVE: To study the expression of EGFR, survivn and hnRNPA2/B1 proteins in ThinPrep bronchial brushing cytology specimens and their significance in diagnosis of lung cancer. METHODS: The protein expression of EGFR, survivn and hnRNPA2/B1 was detected by immunocytochemistry (ICC) in the specimens from 110 cases of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), 32 cases of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and 37 cases of non-neoplastic lung lesions. The relationship between EGFR, survivn and hnRNPA2/B1 protein expression and clinical characteristics of the patients was analyzed using SPSS 16.0 software. RESULTS: (1) Positive expression was observed in 81.1% of NSCLC for EGFR, 66.2% for survivn, 90.9% for hnRNPA2/B1, significantly higher in NSCLC than in the control specimens (P = 0.000, P = 0.000, P = 0.010). The positive expression rate of hnRNPA2/B1 in SCLC was 92.3%, significantly higher than that in the control specimens (P = 0.021). (2) The expression of EGFR was associated with differentiation (P = 0.003), clinical stage (P = 0.023) and lymph node metastasis (P = 0.038), but was not associated with gender, age and histological types. The survivn expression was not related with the above mentioned clinicopathological features (P>0.05). Expression of hnRNPA2/B1 was associated with clinical stage (P = 0.017), but not associated with gender, age, histological type, differentiation and lymph node metastasis. (3) There was a significant difference between the co-expression of EGFR and survivn in NSCLC (98.0%) and benign conditions (2.0%, P = 0.000), also a significant difference between the negative expression of both EGFR and survivn in NSCLC (38.2%) and nonneoplastic lesions (61.8%, P = 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: Analysis of EGFR, survivn and hnRNPA2/B1 expression may be an useful adjunct method to stratify controversial cases. The positive expression of EGFR might be associated with invasion, progression and poor prognosis of NSCLC.
