Pot-culture experiments were carried out in Shanghai to screen crop varieties with low bioaccumulation properties with respect to cadmium (Cd). Eight common crops, such as green pepper, cucumber, cowpea, spinach, cauliflower, tomatoes, rice, and wheat, were planted in contaminated soil with different Cd concentrations of 0.23, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4, and 3.0 mg·kg-1 to investigate the effects on biomass, Cd accumulation characteristics, and edible risk safety. The results indicated that:① With the increase in soil Cd content, the aboveground biomass of crops increased firstly and then decreased. The different crop types had different tolerance to Cd, with green pepper showed the strongest tolerance and spinach and tomato showed the least tolerance. ② The bioaccumulation factor of Cd in the edible parts of eight crops ranged in order of wheat > spinach > rice > green pepper > cauliflower > tomato > cucumber > cowpea. ③ Total Cd content in soil was significantly correlated with Cd content in the crops (P<0.05), and the order of the correlation coefficients was spinach > wheat > tomato > cucumber > green pepper > rice > cauliflower > cowpea. ④ The risk threshold value of Cd in soil based on the edible safety of different crops ranged in order of cowpea > cucumber > cauliflower > green pepper > tomato > rice > spinach > wheat. Cucumber, cowpea, and cauliflower were selected as the low-Cd-accumulating varieties according to their tolerance to soil Cd, bioaccumulation capacity, and edible risk threshold values.

Misfolding of translated proteins occurs in all domains of life. In most cells, misfolded proteins coalesce in discrete aggregates at distinct cellular locations. In many bacteria, including mycobacteria, protein aggregates are located at the cellular pole. Yet the mechanism by which aggregates are sorted to the mycobacterial pole is not known. Here, we show that in Mycobacterium smegmatis, the small heat shock protein HspX plays a critical role in the polar localization of aggregates of a model fluorescent misfolded protein, GLR103. HspX itself has a polar localization, which is dependent on its N-terminal domain. In a strain deleted for hspX, GLR103 is less liable to aggregation and no longer localizes to the pole, and redirecting HspX to the septum radically disrupts the normal polar localization of GLR103 aggregates. To further investigate the role of HspX in native protein aggregation, we performed semi-quantitative mass-spectrometry of mycobacterial protein aggregates in wild-type, hspX-deleted and hspX-overexpressing strains. We identified a subset of proteins that appeared to be HspX-dependent for aggregate formation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for validated native protein aggregates, sorting to the cellular pole following proteotoxic stress required HspX. In summary, we have identified the cellular function of HspX in Mycobacterium smegmatis as both a pro-aggregase and polar sortase.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of posterior occipital condyle screw (OCS) placement analysis of the safe trajectory area for screw insertion. METHODS: Computed tomographic angiography scans of patients (46 males and 27 females) with normal occipitocervical structures were obtained consecutively. Vertebral artery (VA)-occiput distance <4.0 mm was defined as "unfeasible" for OCS fixation, and occipital-atlas angulation was measured to assess the feasibility of screw placement. Next, the placement of 3.5 mm diameter OCS was simulated, the probability of breach of structures surrounding occipital condyles was calculated, and placement parameters were analyzed. RESULTS: OCS placement was feasible in 91.1% (133/146) of occipital condyles, and the feasible probability also presented a significant sex-related difference: The probability was higher for males than for females (95.7% vs. 83.3%, p < 0.05). The incidence of anatomical structures injured under screw placement limitation was 18.8% (VA), 81.2% (hypoglossal canal), 59.4% (occipital-atlas joint), and 40.6% (occiput bone surface). There were no significant differences between the left and right condyles in relation to the measured parameters (p > 0.05). The screw range of motion was significantly smaller in females than in males (p < 0.05). The feasibility of OCS placement and OCS range of motion were significantly greater in the kyphosis group (>5°) than in the other two groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: OCS placement is a feasible technique for occipital-cervical fusion. The male group and occipitocervical region kyphosis group had a wider available space for OCS placement. Tangent angulation may be useful for the accurate and safe placement of an OCS.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical and radiological outcome between the modified Broström repair with augmentation using suture tape (MBA) and the modified Broström repair (MB) for patients with chronic lateral ankle instability. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in Ningbo No. 6 Hospital. The study included 53 patients who underwent surgical treatment from March 2014 to July 2016 and were followed for 2 years. A total of 25 patients underwent modified Broström repair with augmentation using suture tape, and 28 patients were treated with modified Broström repair. Patients were evaluated using the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Scale (AOFAS) hindfoot scale, the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) score, range of motion (ROM), and the visual analogue scale (VAS). The talar tilt angle (TTA) and anterior talar translation (ATT) were used to evaluate the mechanical stability. All radiological outcomes were measured by two orthopaedic surgeons, with the measurements repeated 3 days later. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 26.6 ± 17.8 years in the MBA group and 28.1 ± 19.4 years in the MB group, and no statistical difference in preoperative data was found between two groups. There were significant differences before and after the operation within the groups. Both groups achieved satisfactory outcomes, and significant improvements (VAS, FAAM, AOFAS, TTA, and ATT) were observed between the 1-year follow-up and final follow-up (P < 0.05). The MBA group showed significant improvement in the FAAM Sport (87.1 ± 5.4 vs 78.2 ± 12.0, P = 0.001) and total scores (93.1 ± 2.3 vs 90.5 ± 5.1, P = 0.027) at the final follow-up compared with the MB group, and for the other outcomes, there were no significant differences between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The modified Broström repair with augmentation using suture tap for chronic lateral ankle instability achieves a better outcome; however, further research is necessary.

BACKGROUND: In consideration of characteristics and functions, extra-cellular signal-regulated protein kinase 5 (ERK5) signaling pathway could be a new target for spinal cord injury (SCI) treatment. Our study aimed to evaluate the roles of ERK5 signaling pathway in secondary damage of SCI. METHODS: We randomly divided 70 healthy Wistar rats into five groups: ten in the blank group, 15 in the sham surgery + BIX02188 (sham + B) group, 15 in the sham surgery + dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO; sham + D) group, 15 in the SCI + BIX02188 (SCI + B) group, and 15 in the SCI + DMSO (SCI + D) group. BIX02188 is a specific inhibitor of the ERK5 signaling pathway. SCI was induced by the application of vascular clips (with the force of 30 g) to the dura on T10 level, while rats in the sham surgery group underwent only T9-T11 laminectomy. BIX02188 or DMSO was intra-thecally injected at 1, 6, and 12 h after surgery or SCI. Spinal cord samples were taken for testing at 24 h after surgery or SCI. RESULTS: Expression of phosphorylated-ERK5 (p-ERK5) significantly increased after SCI. Application of BIX02188 indeed inhibited ERK5 signaling pathway and reduced the degree of spinal cord tissue injury, neutrophil infiltration and proinflammatory cytokine expression, nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation and apoptosis (measured by TdT-mediated 2'-deoxyuridine 5'-triphosphate nick-end labeling, expression of Fas-ligand, BCL2-associated X [Bax], and B-cell lymphoma-2 [Bcl-2]). Double immunofluorescence revealed activation of ERK5 in neurons and microglia after SCI. CONCLUSION: ERK5 signaling pathway was activated in spinal neurons and microglia, contributing to secondary injury of SCI. Moreover, inhibition of ERK5 signaling pathway could alleviate the degree of SCI, which might be related to its regulation of infiltration of inflammatory cells and release of inflammatory cytokines, expression of NF-κB and cell apoptosis.

Lysine 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation is a newly discovered posttranslational modification. Although this modification is an important type of protein acylation, its role in psoriasis remains unstudied. We compared lesional and nonlesional psoriasis skin samples from 45 psoriasis patients. The result showed that this highly conserved modification was found in large quantities in both normal and diseased dermal tissues. However, there were a number of clear and significant differences between normal and diseased skin tissue. By comparing, lysine 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation was upregulated at 94 sites in 72 proteins and downregulated at 51 sites in 44 proteins in lesional skin. In particular, the sites with the most significant downregulation of lysine 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation were found in S100A9 (ratio = 0.140, p-value = .000371), while the most upregulated site was found in tenascin (ratio = 3.082, p-value = .0307). Loci associated with psoriasis, including FUBP1, SERPINB2 and S100A9, also exhibited significant regulation. Analyses of proteome data revealed that SERPINB2 and S100A9 were differentially expressed proteins. And bioinformatics analysis suggest that the P13K-Akt signaling pathway was more enriched with lysine 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation in lesional psoriasis skin. Our study revealed that lysine 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation is broadly present in psoriasis skin, suggesting that this modification plays a role in psoriasis pathogenesis. SIGNIFICANCE: A newly discovered protein posttranslational modification, lysine 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation, has been found to occur in a wide variety of organisms and to participate in some important metabolic processes. In this study, lysine 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation in lesional psoriasis skin and nonlesional psoriasis skin was quantified and compared for the first time. We found a number of differentially modified proteins and sites in our comparisons. Interestingly, some of the identified proteins and pathways with significantly different modifications, such as S100A9 and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, have been previously reported to be associated with psoriasis. We hope that this research will provide new insights into psoriasis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and analyze the accuracy of three-dimensional camera system acquisition based on stereophotography for the photographic acquisition of images of facial deformities. METHODS: 3D digital models of 45 waxen facial models of patients with facial deformities were obtained via a 3D camera system based on stereophotography. A total of 19 feature lines were measured on each 3D model by using the software. The measurements taken by the coordinate-measuring machine were accepted as standard values. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the accuracy of the system and the corresponding factors. RESULTS: Statistical analysis results showed that the measured values of the characteristic distance obtained by 3D camera system were statistically different from the standard values (P<0.001). Convex deformities had significant influence on the measuring error of 3D camera system (P<0.05), while cleft deformities had no significant influence on the measuring error (P>0.05). The facial regions significantly influenced measuring error (P<0.05). The deformities had no significant influence on the percentage of measurement values (P>0.05). The middle facial regions had significant difference with bilateral facial regions on the percentage of measurement values (P<0.05), while the left and right facial regions had no significant difference (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The accuracy of 3D camera system based on stereophotography for the photographic acquisition of facial deformities are influenced by the morphology of the facial deformities and facial regions. Moreover, the measuring error is acceptable in clinical settings.

Al foil for high-voltage aluminum electrolytic capacitor was first D.C. etched in HCl-H2SO4 mixed acidic solution to form main tunnels and then D.C. etched in natural NaCl solution containing 0.1% H2C2O4 and different trace amounts of Zn(NO3)2. Between the two etching processes, Zn nuclei were deposited on the interior surface of the main tunnels by the natural occluded corrosion cell effect to form micro Zn-Al galvanic local cells. The effects of Zn nuclei on the cross-section etching and electrochemical behavior of Al foil were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, polarization curve measurement, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The sub-branch tunnels can form along the main tunnels owing to the formation of Zn-Al micro-batteries, in which Zn is the cathode and Al is the anode. Increasing Zn(NO3)2 concentration increases the number of Zn nuclei that can serve as sites for branch tunnel initiation along the main tunnels, thereby enhancing the specific capacitance of etched Al foil.

Genetic studies based on single-nucleotide polymorphisms have provided valuable insights into the genetic architecture of complex diseases. However, a large fraction of heritability for most of these diseases remains unexplained, and the impact of small insertions and deletions (InDels) has been neglected. We performed a comprehensive screen on the exome sequence data of 1,326 genes using the SOAP-PopIndel method for InDels in 32,043 Chinese Han individuals and identified 29 unreported InDels within 25 susceptibility genes associated with psoriasis. Specifically, we identified 12 common, 9 low-frequency, and 8 rare InDels that explained approximately 1.29% of the heritability of psoriasis. Further analyses identified KIAA0319, RELN, NCAPG, ABO, AADACL2, LMAN1, FLG, HERC5, CCDC66, LEKR1, AFF3, ABCG2, ANXA7, SYTL2,GIPR, METTL1, and FYCO1 as unreported genes for psoriasis. In addition, identified InDels were associated with the following reported genes: IFIH1, ERAP1, ERAP2, LNPEP, UBLCP1, and STAT3; unreported independent associations for exonic InDels were found within GJB2 and ZNF816A. Our study enriched the genetic basis and pathogenesis of psoriasis and highlighted the non-negligible impact of InDels on complex human diseases.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has a poor prognosis that has not significantly improved in the past several decades. A prognostic-related signature was needed. METHODS: The Cancer Genome Atlas and GSE41613 databases were downloaded as a training and validation set, respectively. We identified 12 genes that demonstrated progression and prognostic value, and then, a gene signature was constructed. RESULTS: This classification could reflect distinct characteristics, phenotypically and molecularly, among HNSCC tumors. It could stratify patients with significantly different survival rates (median survival: 2083 days vs 927 days; P = 3.85E-08) in the training cohort and validation cohort (P = 0.007) and was significantly involved in immune/inflammatory response and tumor progression processes. CONCLUSIONS: This bioinformatics-based signature suggested the presence of two distinct populations of patients with HNSCC with distinguishable phenotypic characteristics and clinical outcomes and might provide insight for new types of immune therapy.

Dose-dependent cardiotoxicity is the leading adverse reaction seen in cancer patients treated with doxorubicin. Currently, dexrazoxane is the only approved drug that can partially protect against this toxicity in patients, however, its administration is restricted to those patients receiving a high cumulative dose of anthracyclines. Investigations into the mechanisms of cardiotoxicity and efforts to improve cardioprotective strategies have been hindered by the limited availability of a phenotypically relevant in vitro adult human cardiac model system. Here, we adapted a readily reproducible, functional 3D human multi-cell type cardiac system to emulate patient responses seen with doxorubicin and dexrazoxane. We show that administration of two NRF2 gene inducers namely the semi-synthetic triterpenoid Bardoxolone methyl, and the isothiocyanate sulfurophane, result in cardioprotection against doxorubicin toxicity comparable to dexrazoxane as evidenced by an increase in cell viability and a decrease in the production of reactive oxygen species. We further show a synergistic attenuation of cardiotoxicity when the NRF2 inducers and dexrazoxane are used in tandem. Taken together, our data indicate that the 3D spheroid is a suitable model to investigate drug induced cardiotoxicity and we reveal an essential role of the NRF2 pathway in cardioprotection providing a novel pharmacological mechanism and intervention route towards the alleviation of doxorubicin-induced toxicity.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to perform noninvasive analysis of skin proteins in a healthy Chinese population using label-free nanoflow liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (nLC-MS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five consecutive tape strippings were obtained from the volar forearm skin of healthy Chinese subjects. Proteins were extracted, and trypsin-digested peptides were analyzed by a nanochromatography instrument coupled to an Orbitrap Fusion Tribrid mass spectrometer. Data-dependent acquisition allowed protein identification, which was performed by using Proteome Discoverer software (v2.2). RESULTS: In this study, we identified 80 common proteins that were expressed in the skin of healthy Chinese volunteers and divided these proteins into 16 categories, including keratins, cornified envelope proteins, and enzymes associated with substance metabolism. These proteins were closely associated with multiple functions of the skin barrier. CONCLUSION: This study provides a noninvasive method to analyze healthy human epidermal proteins, which are closely associated with the skin barrier. In addition, this study provides a reference for further studies on the application of proteomic technologies to investigate the role of human epidermal proteins in health and disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use of antibiotics in children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in multiple regions of China, and to provide a reference for CAP standard treatment and rational antibiotic use in children. METHODS: The medical data of 1 383 children with CAP who were hospitalized in the department of pediatrics in 10 grade A tertiary hospitals from 9 cities between April 14, 2014 and January 1, 2016 were reviewed, to analyze the status of antibiotic use in hospitalized children in North China, Northeast China, East China, and South China. RESULTS: The overall rate of antibiotic use in children with CAP was 89.08%, with 88.7% in North China, 95.5% in Northeast China, 83.3% in East China, and 86.6% in South China. The main types of antibiotics used were cephalosporins, macrolides, compound preparations of ß-lactam antibiotics, polyphosphoric broad-spectrum antibiotics and other ß-lactam antibiotics. The selection of antibiotics was generally rational, but antibiotics were still used in some patients with viral infection alone or a combined use of ≥2 kinds of antibiotics were noted in some patients with infection caused by one kind of pathogen. Irrational antibiotic use was observed in 131 children (10.63%). CONCLUSIONS: There are high rates of antibiotic use and irrational use of antibiotics among children with CAP. Standard management of antibiotic use in children with CAP should be strengthened.

Defects in bones can be caused by a plethora of reasons, such as trauma or illness, and in many cases, it poses challenges to the current treatment approaches for bone repair. With increasing demand of bone bioengineering in tissue transplant, there is a need to source for sustainable solutions to induce bone regeneration. Polymeric biomaterials have been identified as a promising approach due to its excellent biocompatibility and controllable biodegradability. Specifically, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is one of the most commonly investigated polymer for use in bio-related application due to its bioinertness and versatility. Furthermore, the hydrophilic nature enables it to be incorporated with hydrophobic but biodegradable polymers like, polylactide (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL), to create an amphiphilic polymer. This article reviews the recent synthetic strategies available for the construction of PEG conjugated polymeric system, analysis of PEG influence on the material properties, and provides an overview of its application in bone engineering.

Uniform and dense ZnO nanosheets (ZnONSs) as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating were fabricated on the surface of nickel and titanium oxide composite nanosheets (NiO/TiO2CNSs) which were in situ grown on the Nitinol (NiTi) wire in a hydrothermal procedure. The SEM micrographs illustrate that ZnONSs with the average thickness of 50 nm have been electrochemically grown on the NiTi fibers. The interconnected ZnONSs coating presents a porous nanostructure with large surface area. The as-fabricated fiber exhibits high extraction capability and excellent extraction selectivity for ultraviolet (UV) filters among the selected aromatic compounds. The main parameters affecting extraction performance were examined and optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curves were linear from 0.05 to 500 ng mL-1 with correlation coefficients above 0.999. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) ranged from 0.011 to 0.042 ng mL-1, while the limits of quanitification (S/N = 10) were in the range of 0.037-0.14 ng mL-1. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) for the single fiber repeatability were less than 7.4% (n = 5) and RSDs for the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility were below 8.2% (n = 5). The proposed method was successfully applied to the proconcentraction and determination of trace UV filters in real water samples. Moreover, the ZnONSs coating can be fabricated in highly reproducible manner with long durability.

This study aims to explore the influence of bone resorption of the spinous process after single-segment interspinous process device (IPD) implantation on the biomechanics of the lumbar spine.The 3D finite element model of the lumbar spine (L3-L5) was modified, and 2 models that simulated the presence and absence of bone resorption of the spinous process were developed using an IPD (Wallis). Its biomechanical effects, such as change in range of motion (ROM) and intervertebral disc and facet stress, were introduced at operative (L4/5) and adjacent (L3/4) levels.Compared with the INT model, the Wallis model and Wallis-BR model had similar ROMs in lateral flexion and rotation. However, the Wallis model had a lower L3-5 ROM in flexion (20.4% lower) and extension (26.4% lower), and L4-L5 ROM in flexion (74.1% lower) and extension (70.8% lower), while the overall ROM of the Wallis-BR model was greater than that of the Wallis model. The stress on the L3/L4 intervertebral disc and facets was similar for all 3 models. Compared with the INT model and Wallis-BR model, the stress on the L4/L5 intervertebral disc and facets under all movements significantly decreased in the Wallis model. The stress on the L5 process was greater than that on the L4 process in both the Wallis model and Wallis-BR model, and the load on the processes that underwent bone resorption was lower than that of the Wallis model.The function of the IPD slowly decreased with the occurrence of bone resorption of the interspinous process. This bone remodeling may be associated with high stress after IPD implantation.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the mid-long-term follow-up of the safety and efficacy of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), cervical artificial disc replacement (CADR) and hybrid surgery (HS) for bilevel cervical degenerative disc disease (cDDD). METHODS: 77 patients who underwent ACDF, HS, and CADR were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical effects were evaluated based on Neck Disability Index (NDI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) scores and the Odom criteria. Radiographic outcomes were evaluated, including cervical range of motion (ROM), ROM in the operative and adjacent segments, incidence of degeneration in the adjacent segments (ASD), and heterotopic ossification (HO). RESULTS: NDI, VAS, and JOA scores significantly improved in all patients after surgery without significant differences between groups. The excellent-to-good ratio in the Odom scale was 28/30 for the HS group, 30/33 for the ACDF group, and 13/14 for the CADR group. No significant differences in clinical outcomes or complication were found between groups (P > 0.05). Furthermore, the HS and CADR groups had less decreased ROM in the cervical and operative segments and less compensatory ROM in adjacent segments (P < 0.05). By contrast, the ACDF group had decreased ROM in the cervical and operative segments and significantly increased ROM in adjacent segments (P < 0.05). Moreover, the incidence of ASD was higher in the ACDF group, but the difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). HO was found in 10 patients (33.3%) in the HS group and 5 patients (35.7%) in the CADR group. CONCLUSION: HS was superior to ACDF with regard to equivalent clinical outcomes in the mid-long-term follow-up. Furthermore, HS was superior in the maintenance of ROM and had less impact on its adjacent segments. The efficacy of HS is similar to that of CADR.

Epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma (EPPK, OMIM 144200) is an autosomal dominant inherited disease, clinically characterized by diffuse yellowish thickening of the skin on the palms and soles, usually with erythematous borders developing during the first weeks or months after birth. Pathogenesis of EPPK is determined by mutations in the keratin gene (KRT9). Thirty three mutations in the KRT9 gene from 100 EPPK families have been identified. Among these, 23 mutations are located in the 1A region (a mutation hot spot region), 7 are located in the 2B region, and the remaining 3 are synonymous mutations. In this study, three heterozygous mutations (p.N161S, p.R163W, and p.R163Q), located in regions of the gene encoding the conserved central a-helix rod domain, were detected in the KRT9 gene of the three large Chinese families. This study confirms that codon 163 (48 of 100 cases) is a hot spot mutation site for KRT9. Additional findings identified p.N161S (4%) and p.R163W (4%) as potential hot spot mutations for EPPK associated with knuckle pads, and p.R163Q (15 of 100 cases) as the hot spot mutation of EPPK not occurring in combination with knuckle pads. In conjunction with future studies, this research may help lay the foundation for genetics counseling, prenatal diagnosis and clinical treatment of EPPK.

BACKGROUND: Thoracolumbar junction (TLJ) is the transitional area between the lower thoracic spine and the upper lumbar spine. Vertebral compression fractures and proximal junctional kyphosis following spine surgery often occur in this area. Therefore, the study of development and mechanisms of thoracolumbar junctional degeneration is important for planning surgical management. This study aimed to review radiological parameters of thoracolumbar junctional degenerative kyphosis (TLJDK) in patients with lumbar degenerative kyphosis and to analyze compensatory mechanisms of sagittal balance. METHODS: From January 2016 to March 2017, patients with lumbar degenerative kyphosis were enrolled in this radiographic study. Patients were divided into two groups according to thoracolumbar junctional angle (TLJA): the non-TLJDK (NTLJDK) group (TLJA <10°) and the TLJDK group (TLJA ≥10°). Complete spinopelvic radiographic parameters were analyzed and compared between two groups. Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficients and independent two-sample t-test or Mann-Whitney U-test were used. RESULTS: A total of 77 patients with symptomatic sagittal imbalance due to lumbar degenerative kyphosis were enrolled in this study. There were 34 patients in NTLJDK group (TLJA <10°) and 43 patients in TLJDK group (TLJA ≥10°). The median angle of lumbar lordosis (LL) in the NTLJDK or TLJDK groups was 23.40° (18.50°, 29.48°) or 19.50° (13.30°, 24.55°), respectively. The median TLJAs in all patients and both groups were -11.20° (-14.60°, -4.80°), -3.70° (-7.53°, -1.73°), and -14.30° (-17.45°, -13.00°), respectively. In the NTLJDK group, LL was correlated with thoracic kyphosis (TK; r = -0.400, P = 0.019), sacral slope (SS; r = 0.681, P < 0.001), and C7-sagittal vertical axis (r = -0.402, P = 0.018). In the TLJDK group, LL was correlated with TK (r = -0.345, P = 0.024), SS (r = 0.595, P < 0.001), and pelvic tilt (r = -0.363, P = 0.017). There were significant differences in LL, TLJA, TK, SS, and pelvic incidence (PI) between two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Although TLJDK is common in patients with lumbar degenerative kyphosis, it might be generated by special characteristics of morphology and biomechanics of the TLJ. To maintain sagittal balance, pelvis back tilt might be more important in patients with TLJDK, whereas thoracic curve changes might be more important in patients without TLJDK.

BACKGROUND: The human major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is known to be highly polymorphic and has been identified to be associated with numerous diseases. The HLA-DPB1 and BTNL2 genes were associated with psoriasis for the first time. The present study aims to investigate the relevance of the HLA-DPB1 and BTNL2 genes with respect to clinical phenotypes of psoriasis vulgaris (PV). METHODS: To investigate whether the HLA-DPB1 and BTNL2 polymorphisms were associated with clinical phenotypes of PV in Chinese Han population, we conducted an analysis in case-controls and case-only subjects (9906 controls and 8744 cases) via MHC targeted sequencing stratified analysis. RESULTS: In cases and controls, analysis showed that the genotype of HLA-DPB1*05:01 was associated with type of guttate [p = 3.914 × 10-2 , odds ratio (OR = 0.9335)] and northern region (p = 1.182 × 10-3 , OR = 0.9108). In the case-only analysis, the genotype of HLA-DPB1*05:01 was significantly correlated with geographical region (p = 1.36 × 10-3 , OR = 1.134). In cases and controls, analysis showed that the genotype of BTNL2 (rs 41355746) was associated with being male (p = 2.563 × 10-2 , OR = 0.8897), early-onset (p = 9.399 × 10-3 , OR = 0.8856), guttate (p = 2.469 × 10-2 , OR = 0.8558) and family history (p = 1.51 × 10-4 , OR = 0.772). In the case-only analysis, the genotype of BTNL2 (rs41355746) was significantly correlated with family history (p = 1.768 × 10-3 , OR = 0.757) and age of onset (p = 3.818 × 10-2 , OR = 1.195). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study indicate that the HLA-DPB1*05:01 gene was associated with the geographical region of PV and the BTNL2 gene was significantly associated with family history and age of onset of PV. In conclusion, the HLA-DPB1*05:01 and BTNL2 genes might be responsible for the complicacy of clinical features.
