RESUMO

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study of 257 normal children at a single center from July 2016 to November 2018 was performed. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the spinopelvic parameters in a population of normal children and adolescents in mainland China. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Values for sagittal parameters of the spine vary significantly by ages and different population. No study has yet quantified the normal measures for children and adolescents in China, or how these measures compare to other populations. METHODS: Pelvic incidence (PI), sacral slope (SS), pelvic tilt (PT), thoracic kyphosis (TK, T5-T12), lumbar lordosis (LL, L1-S1) and sagittal vertical axis (SVA) were measured and evaluated by whole spine AP&lateral X-ray images. RESULTS: A total of 257 subjects, including 116 boys (45%) and 141 girls (55%) aged 3-12 years, were enrolled. Correlation matrix analysis demonstrated that sagittal balance are strongly correlated with age and Risser sign, including PI, a reported fixed parameter. Further investigation showed that PI could be expressed by the equation PI = 26.243+1.153*age. CONCLUSIONS: PI was not a fixed but a dynamic parameter in the population under 12 years old. Indeed, PI increases with age and bone maturity in childhood. We also found lower PI, PT and SS compared with published studies of adolescents in other countries. These results may aid in the treatment of patients with spinal deformity, to help them achieve a certain degree of sagittal spinopelvic balance. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: 2.

OBJECTIVES: The present study introduced an electronic conductivity device (ECD) to reduce time of percutaneous transpedicular puncture and frequency of patient valid radiation exposure in percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) or percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP). METHODS: A randomized self-control clinical study was undertaken. Medical records of patients with vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) for bilateral PKP or PVP were collected, and each side was performed randomly with ECD or conventional trocar. RESULTS: We enrolled 61 patients (44 women, 17 men) with 75 vertebras with VCF. Compared with the conventional fluoroscopy group, significant reductions in puncture time (504.33 ± 152.03 vs. 652.68 ± 167.60 seconds; P < 0.001) and fluoroscopy frequency (5.11 ± 1.23 vs. 8.15 ± 1.83; P < 0.001) for each percutaneous puncture were observed in the ECD group. When compared with the VCFs ≤50% group, the 2 indexes in the VCFs >50% group were significantly increased. And in the ECD group, the learning curve in the VCFs >50% group showed a steeper decreasing trend than that in the VCFs ≤50% group. No complications were observed in any patient. CONCLUSIONS: ECD could reduce puncture time of percutaneous transpedicular puncture and exposure of radiation in PVP and PKP. ECD has more benefits in complicated transpedicular puncture in patients with vertebral compression >50%.

BACKGROUND: Spinal fusion is considered the gold standard procedure for treating spinal degeneration, tumors, and trauma. An inflammatory response is an important part of bone repair. We investigated the polarization change of inflammatory macrophages (M1) and resident macrophages (M2) during low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) treatment. METHODS: Thirty male Sprague Dawley rats (age: 12 weeks; weight: 300 g) were used in the study. A rat spinal fusion model was established by surgical procedures. LIPUS treatment (20 min. d, 5 d/wk) was begun 3 days after surgery. The rats were randomly divided into a control group (5 subgroups, 3 rats in each subgroup) and LIPUS group (5 subgroups, 3 rats in each subgroup), and sacrificed on day 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 after spinal fusion surgery for further evaluation. Bone volume was measured by micro-CT, fusion region was examined by histological analyses, types of macrophages in the fusion area were examined by immunohistochemical staining. Raw264.7 cells and bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDM) were used in cell experiments. Cells were divided into a control group and LIPUS group. Flow cytometry was used to examine the rate of resident macrophages, and real-time PCR was used to examine the mRNA expression of anti-inflammation genes. RESULTS: LIPUS promoted spinal fusion and stimulated the transition of F4-80+/Mac-2+ (M1) to F4-80+/Mac-2- (M2), leading to the early appearance of resident macrophages. Cell experiments showed CD206+ macrophages (M2) were significantly increased after LIPUS treatment. M2-related genes and anti-inflammation factors (Arg-1, PPAR-γ, and IL-4) were increased after LIPUS treatment. CONCLUSION: The earlier transition from inflammatory to resident macrophage might be one reason for the positive effect of LIPUS on spinal fusion.

Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is widely used in the tire, footwear, and belt industries. SBR products contain a high content of carbon black, which is hazardous to human health and the environment. The goal of this study is to investigate the potential of using bio-based cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) as a replacement for carbon black under simulated industrial formula/processing conditions. CNFs were surface-modified using five different reagents to have either -SH or -C=C functional groups grafted onto their surfaces. Vulcanized SBR sheets reinforced with pristine CNFs, and the five functionalized CNFs were prepared and their properties were tested and compared with those of industrial SBR containing carbon black. All the CNFs, pristine or modified, demonstrated higher reinforcing efficiencies (property increase/amount of reinforcement) than carbon black. The modified CNFs showed even higher reinforcing efficiencies than the pristine ones because of the former's better dispersion and stronger interfacial bonding. The -SH and -C=C functional groups reduced the hydrophilicity of CNFs and allowed chemical linkages between CNFs and SBR to be established during vulcanization. Solvent (toluene) resistance of the rubber was also improved after the incorporation of CNFs because of the barrier effect of the nanofibers and the restrained SBR chain mobility. The latter also led to reduced rubber damping. Although CNFs provide much stronger reinforcement than carbon black, going forward, SBR/CNFs/carbon black hybrid nanocomposites can also be developed to offer tailorable property combinations that meet different application requirements.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop the simplified Chinese version of Pain Self-efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ) (SC-PESQ) and PSEQ-2 (SC-PSEQ-2), and evaluate the psychometric properties of the two questionnaires in patients with nonspecific low back pain. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: PSEQ has been cross-culturally adapted into many languages with excellent reliability and validity. Recently, the short form of PSEQ-2 was developed and exhibited satisfactory psychometric properties. However, PSEQ and PSEQ-2 has not been translated or validated in mainland China. METHODS: The original version of PSEQ and PSEQ-2 was linguistically translated and adapted to formulate the simplified Chinese version, which was then administrated by 219 patients with low back pain, along with a set of self-report health-related instruments. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the SC-PESQ and SC-PSEQ-2. RESULTS: Two hundred nineteen patients with nonspecific low back pain were enlisted into the analysis. The SC-PSEQ and SC-PSEQ-2 had been determined excellent internal consistency (Cronbach alpha, 0.95 and 0.83), test-retest reliability (overall ICC, 0.91 and 0.88), and sound construct validity, which were supported by moderately strong association with the criterion measures, respectively. In addition, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis have found and confirmed one-factor solution in SC-PSEQ as hypothesized. CONCLUSION: The SC-PESQ and SC-PSEQ-2 showed satisfactory psychometric properties in Chinese population with low back pain, and could be safely utilized to evaluating the self-efficacy in clinical and research setting. A series of new porphyrin dyes (XW42-XW44) containing oligo(ethylene glycol) units have been designed and synthesized. Two triethylene glycol units were introduced into the phenothiazine moiety of XW42, whereas diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol chains were introduced to afford XW43 and XW44, respectively. Interestingly, the efficiencies of the DSSCs were clearly dependent on the chain lengths. Among the three dyes, XW42 and XW43 exhibited relatively high open-circuit voltages of 751 and 750 mV, respectively, and XW43 exhibited the highest efficiency of 10.32 % owing to the presence of the DEG chains with suitable lengths and excellent ability to trap Li+ . Furthermore, through a combined coadsorption and cosensitization approach, the efficiencies were dramatically enhanced. As a result, a highest efficiency of 12.10 % was obtained for the XW43+chenodeoxycholic acid+PT-C6 (a metal-free organic dye) system, which ranks among the highest efficiencies of cells based on the traditional iodine electrolyte.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been wildly verified to modulate multiple tumorigenesis, especially nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). In present study, we aims to investigate the role and mechanism of LINC00520 in the NPC carcinogenesis. Results indicated that LINC00520 was significantly increasing in NPC tissues and cells in comparison to their corresponding controls. Moreover, the aberrant overexpression of LINC00520 indicated the poor prognosis of NPC patients. Silence of LINC00520 was able to repress NPC cell growth in vitro while overexpression of LINC00520 inversed this process. Moreover, in vivo tumor xenografts were establishing using CNE-1/SUNE-1 cells to investigate the function of LINC00520 in NPC tumorigenesis. Rescue assay was conducting to further confirm that LINC00520 contributed to NPC progression by regulating miR-26b-3p/ubiquitin-specific protease 39 (USP39) signal pathway. Taken together, our study discovered the oncogenic role of LINC00520 in clinical specimens and cellular experiments, showing the potential LINC00520/miR-26b-3p/USP39 pathway. This results and findings provide a novel insight for NPC tumorigenesis.

STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop and assess the internal reliability and structure validity of a simplified Chinese version of the Neck Bournemouth Questionnaire (SC-NBQ) for evaluation of patients with nonspecific neck pain (NP) in mainland China. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The NBQ has been cross-culturally translated into several languages with good internal consistency and construct validity to evaluate low back pain and NP. However, the NBQ has been not translated or validated for Chinese-speaking patients. METHODS: The SC-NBQ was developed by standard cross-translation procedures, and completed by 106 patients with nonspecific NP, along with other self-reported questionnaires, including the Neck Disability Index (NDI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Functional Rating Index (FRI), and 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). The internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity of the SC-NBQ were determined. RESULTS: The NBQ was successfully translated into Chinese. All patients completed the SC-NBQ twice, and the other instruments. Score distribution demonstrated that there was no floor or ceiling effects of the SC-NBQ. Cronbach α coefficient (α = 0.89) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC = 0.97) showed good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. A good construct validity was shown by strong correlation with HADS (r = 0.75), NDI (r = 0.82), FRI (r = 0.90) and SF-36 physical functioning (r = 0.75), and bodily pain (r = 0.75) subscales. CONCLUSION: The SC-NBQ demonstrated good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct validity, and may be used for the evaluation of NP in Chinese-speaking patients. Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degeneration disease characterized with joint pain. The aim of the present study was to systemically review the effects of LIPUS on pain relief and functional recovery in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched manually for researches on LIPUS treatment in patients with knee OA from 1945 to July 2017. Two investigators independently selected the studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, extracted the concerned data, and assessed the included studies. Meta-analysis was performed to evaluate VAS, WOMAC, and ambulation speed between control and LIPUS groups. Results: Five studies were selected in this study. Compared with control group, LIPUS group received a decrease of pain intensity with moderate heterogeneity (-0.79, 95% CI, -1.57 to 0.00; I2 = 65%, P = 0.04) by VAS and improvement in knee function by WOMAC (-5.30, 95% CI, -2.88 to -7.71; I2 = 44%, P = 0.17). No significant improvement was found in ambulation speed (0.08 m/s, 95% CI, -0.02 to 0.18 m/s; I2 = 68%, P = 0.03). Conclusion: The present study includes 5 high quality randomized controlled trials. The result indicated that LIPUS, used to treat knee OA without any adverse effect, had a beneficial effect on pain relief and knee functional recovery. More evidence is needed to prove whether LIPUS is effective in improving walking ability.

Seven new pimarane-type diterpene derivatives, libertellenones O-S (1-5) and eutypellenones A and B (6 and 7), together with two known compounds (8 and 9), were isolated from the culture of Eutypella sp. D-1 obtained from high-latitude soil of the Arctic. Their structures were elucidated from spectroscopic data, as well as experimental and calculated electronic circular dichroism (ECD) analysis. Structurally, compounds 1-5 possess a cyclopropyl-fused pimarane diterpene moiety, whereas compounds 6 and 7 share an unusual cyclobutyl-fused pimarane diterpene skeleton. Compounds 1-9 exhibited cytotoxicities against HeLa, MCF-7, HCT-116, PANC-1, and SW1990 cells, with IC50 values in the range of 0.3 to 29.4 µM. Compounds 6 and 7 could dose-dependently inhibit the activity of NF-κB and exhibited significantly inhibitory effects on nitric oxide production induced by lipopolysaccharide.

To develop a new control method for the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae, we investigated the effect of controlled atmospheres of carbon dioxide (CO2) on TSSM mortality under different concentrations and treatment periods, and evaluated the impact of treatments on seedlings of five host plants of TSSM. Egg hatching rate of TSSM was reduced to 37.7, 5.4 or 0% after 24 h treatment involving concentrations of 16.7, 33.3 or 50%, respectively. Mobile stages (nymphs and adult) of TSSM were completely controlled after 24 h treatment at concentrations higher than 33.3%. After 4 h at concentrations of 33.3 or 50%, 1st-day survival rate for all mobile stages was 45.3 or 36.0%, respectively, whereas after 8 or 16 h treatments, all values were decreased to zero. Seedlings of four major host plants of TSSM (cucumber, eggplant, rape, green peppers) were damaged to varying degrees after 24 h at the three concentrations, but strawberry, another host plant, was not damaged. Cucumber suffered the most serious damage, resulting in wilting and death. In conclusion, controlled atmospheres of CO2 can kill TSSM, particularly at high concentrations and with long treatment times. It can be used to control TSSM on strawberry, but should be used cautiously on other host plants.

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been found to accelerate the healing process of spinal fusion via a process closely related to osteoblast differentiation and migration. Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling plays an important role in development and homeostasis, including a critical function in bone formation. However, its role in spinal fusion during LIPUS treatment is still unknown. This study showed that LIPUS treatment after spinal fusion surgery increased bone formation. The increased bone mass under LIPUS treatment appeared to result from the increased migration and proliferation of osteoblasts, resulting from upregulation of the Shh signaling pathway. In contrast, inhibition of Shh reduced the migratory and proliferative ability of osteoblast-like MG63 cells and blocked the efficacy of LIPUS treatment.

We have measured the conductance of pyrazine molecular junction contacting with Cu and Ag electrodes by using an electrochemical jump-to-contact based scanning tunneling microscopy break junction (ECSTM-BJ). While conductance values of 10-2.8 and 10-3.7 G0 are measured for pyrazineCu electrode, 10-2.1 and 10-3.3 G0 are found for pyrazine-Ag contact. The result shows that the conductance of pyrazine with Ag electrode is larger than that with Cu electrode, which can contribute to the different efficiency of electron transport along the molecular junction between Ag and Cu electrodes. The current work shows the important role for the electrode material in electron transport.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been increased interest in the use of ultrasound technology in the evaluation of spinal and paraspinal regions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate trends in spinal ultrasound research from 1994 to 2015 and compare the contributions of such research from different countries and authors. STUDY DESIGN: Bibliometric analysis. SETTING: Publications related to spinal ultrasound from 1994 to 2015 were retrieved from the Web of Science database. METHODS: Excel 2013, GraphPad Prism 5, and VOSviewer were used to summarise bibliometric features, including the number of publications, citation frequency, H-index, and country contributions and hotspots (keywords of popular scientific fields). RESULTS: A total of 3859 papers were included. The global inflection point (the point in time when the publication growth rate moved from positive to negative) came in 2010. The United States contributed the largest percentage of articles (1041; 26.9%), with the most citations (19 848) and the highest H-index (61). The journals Osteoporosis International and Spine had the highest publication number. The University of Toronto and the University of California, San Francisco were the most contributive institutions. Studies could be divided into three clusters: surgery, osteoporosis, and others. The keywords 'adolescent idiopathic scoliosis' and 'anaesthesia' were the latest hotspots, appearing around 2012. CONCLUSION: Spinal ultrasound literature has grown continuously over the last 22 years, with the rate slowing down after 2010. The United States was the largest contributor in this field. Recent studies on topics related to 'adolescent idiopathic scoliosis' and 'anaesthesia' were relatively new and should be closely followed in spinal ultrasound research.

Angiogenesis plays an important role during bone regeneration. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has been proven to accelerate the process of bone fracture healing. However, the mechanism of the effect of LIPUS on bone regeneration is still unclear. In the present study, we used human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) and human osteosarcoma cell (MG-63) to investigate the effect of LIPUS stimulation in an endothelial cell-osteoblast coculture system. At the same time, we used transwell and in vitro angiogenesis assay to observe how LIPUS affects endothelial cells. The results demonstrated that LIPUS could significantly increase the migratory ability and promote tube formation in angiogenesis of HUVECs. Furthermore, LIPUS could significantly elevate the expression of osteogenesis-related genes on osteoblasts such as Runt-related transcription factor 2, alkaline phosphatase, Osteorix, and Cyclin-D1, indicating the pro-osteogenesis effect of LIPUS in our coculture system. In conclusion, endothelial cell is involved in LIPUS-accelerated bone regeneration, the positive effect of LIPUS may be transferred via endothelial cells surrounding fracture healing site.

BACKGROUND: No effective constructs were available in mainland China to assess the whole spine function. The SFI was developed to evaluate spinal function based on the concept of a single kinetic chain concept for whole spine. The SFI has been translated to Spanish and Turkish with accepted psychometric properties. It is imperative to introduce the SFI in mainland China and further to explore the measurement properties. METHODS: The English versions of the SFI was cross-culturally translated according to international guidelines. Measurement properties (content validity, construct validity and reliability) were tested in accordance with the COSMIN checklists. A total of 271 patients were included in this study, and 61 participants with neck pain and 64 participants with back pain paid a second visit three to seven days later. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and principal factor analysis (PCA) were applied to test the factor structure. The Functional Rating Index (FRI), Neck Disability Index (NDI), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), SF-12 and a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) were employed to evaluate the construct validity. Cronbach's alpha and an intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) were calculated for internal consistency and reproducibility. RESULTS: The means score of SC-SFI was 63.60 in patients with spinal musculoskeletal disorders. A high response rate was acquired (265/271). No item was removed due to abnormal distribution or low item-total correlation. Results of CFA did not support that one-factor structure was in goodness of fit (CMIN/DF = 3.306, NNFI = 0.687, CFI = 0.756, GFI = 0.771 and RMSEA = 0.092). Yet, PCA suggested a one-factor structure was the best, accounting for 32% of the total variance. For structural validity, the SC-SFI correlated highly with the FRI, NDI, ODI, and PF, BP in SF-12 (r = 0.661, 0.610, 0.750, 0.709, 0.605, respectively). All the a priori hypotheses were verified. The Cronbach's alpha for the SC-SFI was 0.91, and ICC was 0.96 (95% CI, 0.94-0.98). Bland-Altman plot also confirmed excellent test-retest reliability. CONCLUSIONS: The SFI has been culturally adapted into SC-SFI with remarkable clinical acceptance, excellent internal consistency, reproducibility, and construct validity when applied to patients with spinal musculoskeletal disorders. The results of current study suggest that SC-SFI can be applied by physicians and researchers to measure whole-spine functional status in mainland China.

The expression of Programmed death-1 (PD-1) / programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) has been reported to be reliable prognostic factors in various malignances including primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). However, the exact role of PD-1/PD-L1 in recurrent NPC remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the expression of PD-1 / PD-L1 and the clinical-pathology as well the outcomes of recurrent NPC patients (n = 132). The expression of PD-1 and PD-L1 was measured by immunohistochemistry staining. The relationship between PD-1 / PD-L1 and factors involved in clinic-pathology and outcomes of patients with NPC was assessed by correlation analysis. To further explore the association between PD-L1 and anemia, immunofluorescence analysis was performed to investigate the correlation of PD-L1 with hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). We observed that advanced rT classification and anemia status before salvage treatment was associated with high level of PD-L1 in recurrent NPC patients, and PD-L1 and was co-located with HIF-1α in recurrent tumors by immunofluorescence analysis. Moreover, our result suggested that PD-L1 might be a negative indicator for recurrent NPC patients as well as age, rT classification, anemia and tumor necrosis at diagnose of recurrence. Taken together, our results revealed that PD-L1 might be a potential prognostic biomarker for recurrent NPC patients, and advanced re-stage, anemia might represent as candidate biomarkers for evaluating patients' response to anti-PD-1 / PD-L1-treatment. However, further studies are needed to clarify the underlying mechanism of hypoxia in immunosuppression process induced by PD-1 / PD-L1 axis.

RATIONALE: Metastasis to the small intestine from a primary lung cancer is rare, and is associated with a poor prognosis. Early diagnosis of small intestine metastasis is difficult because of the low incidence of clinically apparent symptoms. PATIENT CONCERNS: Clinical data and treatment of a 59-year-old man with small intestine metastasis from primary solid subtype lung adenocarcinoma are summarized. DIAGNOSES: A man who was previously diagnosed with stage IIIA (T3N2M0) lung adenocarcinoma (solid subtype) came to our hospital for postoperative radiotherapy. Laboratory tests indicated anemia and melena. The patient was initially believed to have digestive ulcer and was treated with omeprazole, which proved to be ineffective. We conducted an abdominal computed tomography (CT) contrast scan and discovered a mass in the small intestine mass. Further positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) imaging indicated the small intestine mass with fluorodeoxyglucose uptake. INTERVENTIONS: The patient underwent an enterectomy and anastomosis. Pathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of small intestinal metastasis from lung cancer with concomitant mesenteric lymph node metastasis. OUTCOMES: One month after the operation, hemoglobin levels became normal, and the patient had good quality of life. However, 3 months after the operation, the patient suffered from anemia again. An abdominal CT scan indicated a new small intestine mass. Progression continued rapidly, and the patient died of hemorrhagic shock 5.5 months after the resection of the small intestine mass. LESSONS: Although uncommon, if lung cancer patients present with anemia and melena, enteric metastasis should be part of the differential diagnosis. Abdominal CT scans and PET-CT are effective for early diagnosis. The prognosis of metastatic spread of solid subtype lung adenocarcinoma to the small intestine with mesenteric lymph node metastasis is poor. Subgroups of patients benefitting from metastasectomy and more effective systemic therapy need to be further investigated.
