ABSTRACT: Synchronous double primary malignancies of lymphoma and thyroid cancer are rare. In this retrospective study, we investigated the pathology, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcomes of patients with synchronous lymphoma and thyroid cancer.Of the 1156 newly diagnosed lymphoma patients treated in our hospital between January 1, 2016 and February 1, 2021, 8 cases had lymphoma complicated with thyroid cancer. The clinical data and treatment strategies of 8 cases with synchronous lymphoma and thyroid cancer were retrospectively analyzed.The median age of patients was 56 (25-64) years. All the 8 patients were female and papillary thyroid cancer. Only 1 patient had peripheral T-cell lymphoma, and the other 7 were B-cell lymphoma. Seven of 8 patients had normal free triiodothyronine and free thyroxine at the time of diagnosis. Seven thyroid cancer patients received total thyroidectomy and levothyroxine and the remaining 1 patient has a plan for surgery. At the last follow-up, 7 patients with B-cell lymphoma are alive; the patient with peripheral T-cell lymphoma complicated with thyroid cancer died due to lymphoma progression.Synchronous lymphoma and thyroid cancer are more predominant in women. Histologically, B-cell lymphomas and papillary thyroid cancer subtypes are more common. Attention should be paid to the presence of thyroid nodules in the diagnosis of lymphoma. Biopsy or ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of the suspicious thyroid nodule should be performed to exclude thyroid malignancy.

Anchor piles are widely used in marine aquaculture, and the safety is largely determined by the uplift resistance capacity,especially in harsh ocean environments. However, there are few practical guides to the design and installation of the anchor piles for mooring the body of marine aquaculture equipment. Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of the initial tension angle, pile diameter, embedded depth, and pile configuration on the uplift resistance capacity of anchor piles under oblique loads. CCD camera and load cell were utilized to measure the corresponding displacement and load, respectively. The results show that increasing the initial tension angle of circular and square single piles can significantly improve the uplift resistance capacity. The failure load of the square single pile was slightly higher than that of the circular single pile. Increasing the pile diameter can effectively improve the failure load and delay the development speed of the pile top displacement. Increasing the embedded depth can effectively improve the failure load and increase the lateral displacement of the pile top. The uplift resistance capacity of the dual anchor piles was better than that of the single anchor piles. The layout configuration has little effect on the failure load, but has a large effect on the displacement development.

Nanozymes are of particular interest due to their enzyme-mimicking activity and high stability that are favorable in biomedical sensing and immunoassays. In this work, we report a highly specific N-doped nanozyme through pyrolysis of framework-confined bovine serum albumin (BSA). This strategy allows one to translate the low-cost and featureless BSA into a highly active enzyme mimic. The obtained carbon nanozyme (denoted as HBF-1-C800) displays 3- to 7-fold enhancement on peroxidase (POD) activity compared with the conventional carbon nanozymes and also shows ca. 5-fold activity enhancement compared to the reported N-doping graphene. Such excellent POD activity originates from high N-doping efficiency, protein-induced defective sites, and the intrinsic porous structure of HBF-1-C800, which provides abundantly accessible active sites and accelerates substrate diffusion simultaneously. Importantly, the HBF-1-C800 nanozyme has highly specific POD activity and also enables resistance to several harsh conditions that should denature natural enzymes. These features allow it with high accuracy, stability, and sensitivity for biosensing applications. Moreover, HBF-1-C800 has been designed as a promising platform for colorimetric biosensing of several biomarkers including H2O2, glutathione, and glucose, with wide linear ranges and low limits of detection that are satisfied with the disease diagnosis.

The monitoring of mercury and fluoride ions (Hg2+ and F-) has aroused wide concerns owing to the high toxicity of Hg2+ and the duplicitous nature of F- to human health. As far as we known, more than 100 million people in poverty-stricken areas are still at high risk of being over-exposed to Hg2+ and F- via drinking water. Simple and cost-effective luminescent methods are highly promising for on-site water monitoring in rural areas. However, the development of multipurpose luminescent probes that are accurate and sensitive remains challenging. Herein, a new strategy for rationally designing a multipurpose ratiometric probe is present. The obtained probe is consisted of two emission units with energy transfer between them, which exhibit high coordination affinities to the two coexisted toxic targets (Hg2+ and F-), respectively. Thus, two distinct routes for efficiently modulating the energy transfer in the probe are present to trigger the responses to the two targets in sequence. By detecting the shift of the emission color with a smartphone, an on-site water monitoring method is successfully established with the detection limits as low as 2.7 nM for Hg2+ and 1.9 µM for F-. The present study can expend the toolbox for water monitoring in rural regions.

BACKGROUND: Effective postoperative analgesia is of great significance for postoperative rehabilitation. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate the efficacy of corticosteroid on pain following total joint arthroplasty. METHOD: PubMed (1996-December 2020), Embase (1996-December 2020), and the Cochrane Library (CENTRAL, December 2020) were searched and a total of 11 randomized controlled trials met our inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Eleven randomized controlled trials met the inclusion criteria. Pooled data indicated the corticosteroid group was effective compared to the control group in terms of the visual analogue scale at rest (P < .05) and movement (P < .05), the total morphine equivalent consumption (P < .05), and the length of stay (P < .05), without increasing the risk of periprosthetic joint infection (P = .74) and the length of stay (P = .32). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the control group, intraoperative corticosteroid was benefit to the pain management in total joint arthroplasty.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as a major source that significantly increase the risk of developing lung cancer, severely jeopardize public health in modern society. The analysis of PAHs and their metabolites (hydroxylated PAHs, OH-PAHs) is important for biomonitoring and exposure assessment. However, due to the difference in their physico-chemical properties and matrix interference, realizing high-performance extraction of both PAHs and OH-PAHs is still a challenge. Herein, a nickel-doped hierarchical porous carbon (Ni/HPC) is synthesized by carbonizing the polystyrene (PS) infiltrated metal-organic frameworks (MOF-74(Ni)). The obtained Ni/HPC exhibits hierarchical pores and evenly distributed Ni atoms, providing efficient diffusion pathways and adsorption sites. The custom Ni/HPC-coated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber shows superior enrichment capabilities for PAHs and their metabolites under various interfering conditions, verifying its practicability in real sample analysis. The proposed method provides a new strategy to synthesize carbon-based adsorbents that achieves matrix-resistant enrichment of PAHs and OH-PAHs, which simplifies the related sample preparation process for environmental analysis and clinical diagnosis.

Objective: To compare maternal and neonatal outcomes for women with placenta accreta syndrome (PAS) delivering via a planned or emergent approach. Methods: A systematic search for relevant studies was conducted by screening the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar electronic databases. Included studies should have been retrospective record-based or prospective in design. They must have compared maternal and/or neonatal outcomes for PAS patients delivering via planned and emergency procedures. Strength of association was presented as pooled adjusted relative risk (RR) for categorical outcomes and weighted mean difference (WMD) for continuous outcomes. Statistical analysis was done using STATA version 16.0. Results: Nine articles were included in the meta-analysis. PAS patients undergoing planned deliveries had increased gestational ages, required fewer units of transfused blood, experienced shorter hospital stay durations, and presented reduced risks for maternal ICU admission and severe maternal morbidity. Neonates born to mothers undergoing planned deliveries had increased birth weights and decreased NICU admission risk. Conclusion: These findings indicate a planned approach for delivery is better for maternal and neonatal outcomes compared to urgent/emergency delivery for PAS patients.

Testicular germ cell tumor (TGCT) is the most common malignant tumor in young men and is associated with poor prognosis. We assessed the RNA expression profiles of 13 TGCT tissues and 4 adjacent normal tissues by transcriptome sequencing to identify novel prognostic biomarkers. We detected several differentially expressed mRNAs in TGCT that were functionally annotated by GO and KEGG enrichment analyses to tumorigenesis-related processes such as immunity and chemotherapeutic resistance. An mRNA-lncRNA-miRNA regulatory network was constructed using RNA-Seq data and public databases, and integrated with TCGA database to develop a prediction model for metastasis and recurrence. Finally, GRK4, PCYT2 and RGSL1 were identified as predictive markers of survival and therapeutic response. In conclusion, we found several potential predictors for TGCT prognosis and immunotherapeutic response by ceRNA network analysis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the colon, and its incidence is on the rise worldwide. Resveratrol (RSV), a polyphenolic compound, was recently indicated to exert anti-inflammatory effects on UC. Consequently, the current study was conducted to investigate the mechanism of RSV on alleviating UC in mice by mediating intestinal microflora homeostasis. First, potential targets that RSV may regulate UC were screened using the TCMSP database. Next, mice were treated differently, specifically subjected to sham-operation and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induction, and then treated or untreated with RSV. Disease Activity Index (DAI) and Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining were employed to analyze the pathological changes of mice colon. In addition, the expression patterns of inflammatory factors in spleen tissues were detected using ELISA, while the protein expression patterns of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), protein kinase B (Akt), and vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) in colon tissues were determined by means of immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Western blot analysis. Moreover, changes in intestinal flora and metabolite diversity in UC were analyzed by metabonomics. It was found that RSV played inhibitory roles in the PI3K/Akt pathway in mice. Meanwhile, the administration of RSV induced downregulated the expressions of TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1ß, IL-6, and IL-4. The six floras of Haemophilus and Veillonella were significantly enriched in UC, while Clostridium, Roseburia, Akkermansia, and Parabacteroides were found to be enriched in control samples. Lastly, it was noted that Akkermansia could regulate the intestinal flora structure of UC mice through triacylglycerol biosynthesis, glycerol phosphate shuttle, cardiolipin biosynthesis, and other metabolic pathways to improve UC in mice. Altogether, our findings indicate that RSV suppressed the activation of the PI3K/Akt pathway and reduced the VEGFA gene expression to alleviate UC in mice.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a multi-hop wireless network composed of a group of static or mobile sensor nodes in the form of self-organization. Uneven distribution of nodes often leads to the problem of over coverage and incomplete coverage of monitoring areas. To solve this problem, this paper establishes a network coverage optimization model and proposes a coverage optimization method based on an improved hybrid strategy weed algorithm (LRDE_IWO). The improvement of the weed algorithm includes three steps. Firstly, the standard deviation of normal distribution based on the tangent function is used as the seed's new step size in the seed diffusion stage to balance the ability of the global search and local search of weed algorithm. Secondly, to avoid the problem of premature convergence, a disturbance mechanism combining enhanced Levy flight and the adaptive random walk strategy is proposed in the process of seed breeding. Finally, in competition of invasive weed stage, the differential evolution strategy is introduced to optimize the competition operation process and speed up convergence. The improved weed algorithm is applied to coverage optimization of WSNs. The simulation results show that the coverage rate of LRDE_IWO is increased by about 1% to 6% compared with the original invade weed algorithm (IWO) and the differential evolution invasive weed optimization algorithm (DE_IWO), and the coverage rate of the LRDE_IWO algorithm is increased by 4.10%, 2.73% and 1.19%, respectively, compared with the antlion optimization algorithm (ALO), the fruit fly optimization algorithm (FOA) and the gauss mutation weed algorithm (IIWO). The results prove the superiority and validity of the improved weed algorithm for coverage optimization of wireless sensor networks.

We present a novel method for extracting the proton radius from elastic electron-proton (ep) scattering data. The approach is based on interpolation via continued fractions augmented by statistical sampling and avoids any assumptions on the form of function used for the representation of data and subsequent extrapolation onto Q^{2}≃0. Applying the method to extant modern ep datasets, we find that all results are mutually consistent and, combining them, we arrive at r_{p}=0.847(8) fm. This result compares favorably with values obtained from contemporary measurements of the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen, transitions in electronic hydrogen, and muonic deuterium spectroscopy.

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is a zoonotic pathogen that primarily inhabits the upper respiratory tract of pigs. Therefore, pigs that carry these pathogens are the major source of infection. Most patients are infected through contact with live pigs or unprocessed pork products and eating uncooked pork. S. Suis mainly causes sepsis and meningitis. The disease has an insidious onset and rapid progress. The patient becomes critically ill and the mortality is high. In this case report, we described a rare case of S. suis isolated from a middle-aged woman in Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province, China, who did not have any contact with live pigs and had not eaten uncooked pork. S. Suis was isolated from both the patient's blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples.

To establish age- and sex-specific distribution of the infrarenal abdominal aortic diameters (IAD) among non-aneurysmal elderly population and to investigate the associations between traditional cardiovascular risk factors and IAD in men and women. We included 4032 participants (mean age 67.2 years; 60.4% women) from the population-based Rotterdam Study, free of cardiovascular disease, who underwent IAD ultrasound assessment between 2009-2014. Linear regression analysis was used to identify determinants of IAD. The medians (inter-quartile range) of absolute IAD and body surface area (BSA)-adjusted IAD were 17.0 (15.0-18.0) mm and 9.3 (8.5-10.2) mm for women and 19.0 (18.0-21.0) mm and 9.4 (8.6-10.3) mm for men, respectively. There was a non-linear relationship between age and IAD. IAD increased steeply with advancing age and up to 70 years. After around 75 years of age, the diameter values reached a plateau. Waist circumference and diastolic blood pressure were associated with larger diameters in both sexes. Body mass index [Effect estimate (95% CI): 0.04 (0.00 to 0.08)], systolic blood pressure [- 0.01(- 0.02 to 0.00)], current smoking [0.35 (0.06 to 0.65)], total cholesterol levels [- 0.21 (- 0.31 to - 0.11)], and lipid-lowering medication [- 0.43 (- 0.67 to - 0.19)] were significantly associated with IAD in women. Sex differences in IAD values diminished after taking BSA into account. The increase in diameters was attenuated after 70 years. Differences were observed in the associations of several cardiovascular risk factors with IAD among men and women.

The usage of exogenous antioxidant materials to relieve oxidative stress offers an important strategy for the therapy of oxidative stress-induced injuries. However, the fabrication processes toward the antioxidant materials usually require the involvement of extra metal ions and organic agents, as well as sophisticated purification steps, which might cause tremendous environmental stress and induce unpredictable side effects in vivo. To address these issues, herein, we proposed a novel strategy to fabricate green nanoparticles for efficiently modulating oxidative stress, which was facilely prepared from tea polyphenol extracts (originated from green tea) via a green enzymatic polymerization-based chemistry method. The resulting nanoparticles possessed a uniform spherical morphology and good stability in water and biomedium and demonstrated excellent radical scavenging properties. These nanoparticle scavengers could effectively prevent intracellular oxidative damage, accelerate wound recovery, and protect the kidneys from reactive oxygen species damaging in the acute kidney injury model. We hope this work will inspire the further development of more types of green nanoparticles for antioxidant therapies via similar synthetic strategies using green biomass materials.

BACKGROUND: The varied clinical outcomes of patients with Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) are attributed to the different genetic and phenotypic subtypes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether metabolic alterations were related to cell-of-origin subtypes of DLBCL and find some metabolites which are associated with the clinical outcomes. METHODS: Pre-treatment serum samples from eighty (80) newly diagnosed DLBCL patients, including twenty-eight (28) patients with Germinal Center B cell-like (GCB) subtypes and fifty-two (52) patients with non-GCB subtypes, were tested by the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) technique. Univariate and multivariate analysis methods, principal component analysis (PCA), and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were conducted to examine the potential differential metabolites. Overall survival (OS) was calculated. RESULTS: Overall, 65 out of 1472 entities were identified for subsequent analysis. Unfortunately, the initial PLS-DA analysis failed to discriminate GCB from non-GCB samples. Intriguingly, further PLS-DA analysis identified two subgroups of DLBCL (named as group A and group B) and the metabolic subgroups were significantly associated with overall survival. Valine, hexadecenoic acid, and pyroglutamic acid were identified and verified as the most important altered metabolites and could be candidate biomarkers for the prognosis of DLBCL. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that metabolic alterations in serum could be helpful to predict different clinical outcomes of DLBCL patients. Further studies are warranted to understand whether the altered metabolites might serve as prognostic factors for DLBCL.

Herein, we report the first example of using mesoporous hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (MHOFs) as the protecting scaffold to organize a biocatalytic cascade. The confined microenvironment of MHOFs has robust and large transport channels, allowing the efficient transport of a wide range of biocatalytic substrates. This new MHOF-confined cascade system shows superior activity, extended scope of catalytic substrates, and ultrahigh stability that enables the operation of complex chemical transformations in a porous carrier. In addition, the advantages of MHOF-confined cascades system for point-of-care biosensing are also demonstrated. This study highlights the advantages of HOFs as scaffold for multiple enzyme assemblies, which has huge potential for mimicking complex cellular transformation networks in a controllable manner.

Mg doped Ni(OH)2 was synthesized and investigated as an efficient material to activate persulfate (PS) for phenol degradation. The property of the Ni(OH)2 material was enhanced by Mg doping as the removal efficiency of phenol was increased from 74.82 % in Ni(OH)2/PS system to 89.53 % in Mg-doped Ni(OH)2/PS system within 20 min. Such a high removal efficiency revealed that doping Mg into Ni(OH)2 brings about more defects (oxygen vacancies), which facilitated the formation of more active species in the degradation process. The removal efficiencies of phenol increased with the increase of the initial pH from 3 to 11. The influences of Cl-, NO3- and HCO3- on the stability of the system were also studied and the results showed that removal rates of all systems in the presence of these different inorganic anions could reached about 90 % within 20 min. Based on the electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments, 1O2, O2·-, ·OH and SO4•- were identified as the active species in Mg-doped Ni(OH)2/PS system for phenol degradation and a degradation mechanism was proposed for this system. In addition, the as-prepared material retained its activation performance even after 3 repeated cycles.

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are the initial cells for the spermatogenesis. Although much progress has been made on uncovering a number of modulators for the SSC fate decisions in rodents, the genes mediating human SSCs remain largely unclear. Here we report, for the first time, that TCF3, a member of the basic helix-loop-helix family of transcriptional modulator proteins, can stimulate proliferation and suppress the apoptosis of human SSCs through targeting podocalyxin-like protein (PODXL). TCF3 was expressed primarily in GFRA1-positive spermatogonia, and EGF (epidermal growth factor) elevated TCF3 expression level. Notably, TCF3 enhanced the growth and DNA synthesis of human SSCs, whereas it repressed the apoptosis of human SSCs. RNA sequencing and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assays revealed that TCF3 protein regulated the transcription of several genes, including WNT2B, TGFB3, CCN4, MEGF6, and PODXL, while PODXL silencing compromised the stem cell activity of SSCs. Moreover, the level of TCF3 protein was remarkably lower in patients with spermatogenesis failure when compared to individuals with obstructive azoospermia with normal spermatogenesis. Collectively, these results implicate that TCF3 modulates human SSC proliferation and apoptosis through PODXL. This study is of great significance since it would provide a novel molecular mechanism underlying the fate determinations of human SSCs and it could offer new targets for gene therapy of male infertility.

Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in various physiological and pathological processes. However, the role of lncRNAs in testicular germ cell tumor (TGCT) has been rarely reported. Our purpose is to comprehensively survey the expression and function of lncRNAs in TGCT. In this study, we used RNA sequencing to construct the lncRNA expression profiles of 13 TGCT tissues and 4 paraneoplastic tissues to explore the function of lncRNAs in TGCT. The bioinformatics analysis showed that many lncRNAs are differentially expressed in TGCT. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses revealed that the differentially expressed lncRNAs participated in various biological processes associated with tumorigenesis in cis and trans manners. Further, we found that the expression of LINC00467 was positively correlated with the poor prognosis and pathological grade of TGCT using WGCNA analysis and GEPIA database data mining. In vitro experiments revealed that LNC00467 could promote the migration and invasion of TGCT cells by regulating the expression of AKT3 and influencing total AKT phosphorylation. Further analysis of TCGA data revealed that the expression was negatively correlated with the infiltration of immune cells and the response to PD1 immunotherapy. In summary, this study is the first to construct the expression profile of lncRNAs in TGCT. It is also the first study to identify the metastasis-promoting role of LNC00467, which can be used as a potential predictor of TGCT prognosis and immunotherapeutic response to provide a clinical reference for the treatment and diagnosis of TGCT metastasis.

Due to their wide applications and extensive discharges, pharmaceuticals have recently become a potential risk to aquatic and terrestrial organisms. The uptake of pharmaceuticals have been shown to stimulate plant defense systems and induce phytotoxic effects. Signaling molecules such as plant hormones play crucial roles in plant stress and defense responses, but the relationship between these molecules and pharmaceutical uptake has rarely been investigated. In this study, two common pharmaceuticals, carbamazepine and ibuprofen, and three stress-related plant hormones, jasmonic acid, salicylic acid, and abscisic acid, were simultaneously tracked in the roots and stems of Malabar spinach (Basella alba L.) via an in vivo solid phase microextraction (SPME) method. We also monitored stress-related physiological markers and enzymatic activities to demonstrate plant hormone modulation. The results indicate that pharmaceutical uptake, subsequent stress symptoms, and the defense response were all significantly correlated with the upregulation of plant hormones. Moreover, the plant hormones in the exposure group failed to recover to normal levels, indicating that plants containing pharmaceutical residues might be subject to potential risks.
