OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop and validate a predictive model of posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE). METHODS: The training cohort was patients registered at West China Hospital and diagnosed as traumatic brain injury (TBI) between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2017. On the basis of multivariable cox proportional hazards model using a forward stepwise method, the nomogram was generated. We externally validated this instrument in 834 participants from two independent cohorts to assess its performance. RESULTS: The nomogram was built based on the results of multivariable cox proportional hazards regression analysis of 1301patients from West China Hospital. The prevalence of PTE was 12.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 10.9-14.6%) in training cohort, 10.5% (95% CI, 7.5-13.4%) in the testing 1 cohort, and 6.1% (95% CI, 3.7-8.4%) in the testing 2 cohort. 7 independent predictors of PTE composed the nomogram (sex, time of loss of consciousness, subdural hemorrhage, contusion sites, early posttraumatic seizures, TBI severity, and treatment). The C-index was 0.846 (95% CI, 0.817-0.876), and the corresponding sensitivity and specificity were 0.867 and 0.738. External validations showed good discrimination in overall testing cohorts with a C-index of 0.895 (95% CI, 0.859-0.930), in the testing 1 cohort (C-index 0.897, 95% CI, 0.855-0.938) and testing 2 cohort (C-index, 0.883, 95% CI, 0.814-0.952). Calibration of this model was also good since the calibration plots were close to the ideal line. CONCLUSIONS: This nomogram was developed and validated in a large cohort for individualized prediction of PTE, which can identify individuals at high risk of epilepsy and help us find preventive drugs based on these targeted population.

Eighteen novel 3/5(3,5)-(di)nitropaeonol hydrazone derivatives were prepared, and their structures well characterized by 1H NMR, HRMS, and mp. Due to the steric hindrance, the substituents on the C = N double bond of all hydrazine compounds (except E/Z = 4/1 for IV-1g, IV-1l, IV-2b, and E/Z = 3/2 for IV-1n, IV-3a) adopted E configuration. Among all compounds, four compounds 2, 4, IV-1j, and IV-1n exhibited potent nematicidal activity than their precursor paeonol, especially 5-nitropaeonol (2) and 3,5-dinitropaeonol (4) displayed the most potent nematicidal activity Heterodera glycines in vivo with LC50 values of 32.3307 and 36.7074 mg/L, respectively.

RESUMO

A silicon nanoplate-decorated graphite design is developed for lithium battery anodes via a simple ball milling process. The resultant silicon-graphite electrodes show high cycling stability with high capacity, superior rate capability, and excellent electrode stability when compared to their counterparts, attributable to two-dimensional silicon and its area-to-area contact with graphite.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the long-term outcomes of patients with convulsive epilepsy in rural West China and to explore potential related factors. METHODS: Patients who were provided Phenobarbital as a treatment and followed-up monthly were enrolled from the Convulsive Epilepsy Control and Management Program in West China. Their clinical and demographic information were obtained from the program database and a questionnaire. Seizure outcomes, comorbidities, annual income, marital status, employment and quality of life (QOL) were evaluated as long-term outcomes. Logistic regression was used to analyze the related factors. RESULTS: Of 473 eligible patients with a median follow-up time of nearly 7 years, 312 (66 %) had one-year terminal remission. A total of 320 (67.7 %) patients had a low annual income (<5000 Yuan), and 198 (41.9 %) patients reported a comorbidity. Among 460 patients of marriageable age, 137 (29.8 %) were unmarried. 60.4 % (333) patients reported improved QOL. Time of follow-up, seizure frequency during early treatment, compliance, annual cost for epilepsy treatment and annual income were related to the seizure outcome. Baseline seizure frequency was associated with comorbidities. Sex, annual cost for epilepsy treatment and seizure outcomes were associated with annual income. Age, sex and age at onset were correlated with current marital status. Compliance and taking traditional Chinese medicine were associated with QOL. CONCLUSION: The prognosis of epilepsy goes beyond being seizure-free. Comorbidities, income and marriage outcomes in resource-poor areas are less promising. Systematic management considering prognosis-related factors for epilepsy by a collaboration of health providers and society is needed.

This investigation examined the effects of a 12-week mini-basketball training program (MBTP) on physical fitness and social communication in preschool children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The study applied a quasi-experimental design. Fifty-nine preschool children aged 3-6 years with ASD were assigned to either a MBTP group (n = 30) or a control group (n = 29). Participants in the MBTP group received a scheduled mini-basketball training program (5 sessions per week, forty minutes per session) for twelve consecutive weeks, while the control group was instructed to maintain their daily activities. The physical fitness test and the parent-reported Social Responsiveness Scale Second Edition (SRS-2) test were performed before and after the intervention. Results indicated that the 12-week MBTP facilitated performance in the physical fitness test, particularly in speed-agility and muscular strength abilities. Additionally, children in the MBTP group demonstrated improvement in SRS-2 performance in social awareness, social cognition, social communication, and autistic mannerisms, whereas no such changes were found in the control group. It may be concluded that the 12-week MBTP could improve physical fitness and social communication in preschool children with ASD, and thus the use of physical exercise intervention as a therapeutic tool for preschoolers with ASD is recommended.

This study examined the effects of a 12-week mini-basketball training program (MBTP) on executive functions and core symptoms among preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In this quasi-experimental pilot study, 33 ASD preschoolers who received their conventional rehabilitation program were assigned to either a MBTP group (n = 18) or control group (n = 15). Specifically, the experimental group was required to take an additional 12-week MBTP (five days per week, one session per day, and forty minutes per session), while the control group was instructed to maintain their daily activities. Executive functions and core symptoms (social communication impairment and repetitive behavior) were evaluated by the Childhood Executive Functioning Inventory (CHEXI), the Social Responsiveness Scale-Second Edition (SRS-2), and the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised (RBS-R), respectively. After the 12-week intervention period, the MBTP group exhibited significantly better performances in working memory (F = 7.51, p < 0.01, partial η2 = 0.195) and regulation (F = 4.23, p < 0.05, partial η2 = 0.12) as compared to the control group. Moreover, the MBTP significantly improved core symptoms of ASD preschoolers, including the social communication impairment (F = 6.02, p < 0.05, partial η2 = 0.020) and repetitive behavior (F = 5.79, p < 0.05, partial η2 = 0.016). Based on our findings, we concluded that the 12-week MBTP may improve executive functions and core symptoms in preschoolers with ASD, and we provide new evidence that regular physical exercise in the form of a MBTP is a promising alternative to treat ASD.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to explore the probability of developing posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) in the following 8 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI), the risk factors associated with PTE and its cumulative prevalence. METHODS: This is a retrospective follow-up study of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) discharged from the West China Hospital between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2017, Chengdu Shang Jin Nan Fu Hospital and Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital from January 1, 2013 to March 1, 2015. We used forward stepwise method to build the final multivariate cox proportional hazard regression model to obtain estimates of hazard ratio (HR) of PTE and 95% confidence intervals (CI). We also conducted Kaplan-Meier survival analysis to investigate the cumulative prevalence of PTE. RESULTS: The cumulative incidence of PTE rose from 6.2% in one year to 10.6% in eight years. There were more male patients in PTE group and generally older. Besides, patients with PTE tended to have abnormal CT scan results. The risk factors of PTE were male (HR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.1-2.2, P = 0.009), early posttraumatic seizures (HR = 2.9, 95% CI: 2.2-4.1, P < 0.001), TBI severity (moderate TBI: HR = 3.0, 95% CI: 1.8-5.0, P = 0.001; severe TBI: HR = 4.3, 95% CI: 2.3-7.6, P < 0.029), loss of consciousness (LOC) more than 30 min (30 min-24 h: HR = 1.8, 95% CI: 1.02-3.1, P = 0.041; >24 h: HR = 2.4, 95% CI: 1.4-2.4, P = 0.001), subdural hematoma (SDH) (HR = 1.9, 95% CI: 1.4-2.5, P < 0.001), brain contusion sites (frontal-temporal lobe: HR = 2.7, 95% CI: 1.9-3.9, P < 0.001; other sites: HR = 1.5, 95% CI: 1.01-2.3, P = 0.042) and cranial surgery (HR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.3-2.3, P < 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE: The probability of developing PTE increased during the study period. In addition, the risk of developing PTE was significantly associated with gender, EPTS, LOC time, SDH, brain contusion sites, surgery and TBI severity. However, further researches may be needed to predict the risk of PTE in combination with quantitative factors.

The broad spectrum of intellectual disability (ID) patients' clinical manifestations, the heterogeneity of ID genetic variation, and the diversity of the phenotypic variation represent major challenges for ID diagnosis. By exploiting a manually curated systematic phenotyping cohort of 3803 patients harboring ID, we identified 704 pathogenic genes, 3848 pathogenic sites, and 2075 standard phenotypes for underlying molecular perturbations and their phenotypic impact. We found the positive correlation between the number of phenotypes and that of patients that revealed their extreme heterogeneities, and the relative contribution of multiple determinants to the heterogeneity of ID phenotypes. Nevertheless, despite the extreme heterogeneity in phenotypes, the ID genes had a specific bias of mutation types, and the top 44 genes that ranked by the number of patients accounted for 39.9% of total patients. More interesting, enriched co-occurrent phenotypes and co-occurrent phenotype networks for each gene had the potential for prioritizing ID genes, further exhibited the convergences of ID phenotypes. Then we established a predictor called IDpred using machine learning methods for ID pathogenic genes prediction. Using10-fold cross-validation, our evaluation shows remarkable AUC values for IDpred (auc = 0.978), demonstrating the robustness and reliability of our tool. Besides, we built the most comprehensive database of ID phenotyped cohort to date: IDminer http://218.4.234.74:3100/IDminer/, which included the curated ID data and integrated IDpred tool for both clinical and experimental researchers. The IDminer serves as an important resource and user-friendly interface to help researchers investigate ID data, and provide important implications for the diagnosis and pathogenesis of developmental disorders of cognition.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the tolerability and safety profile of eslicarbazepine acetate (ESL). METHODS: Placebo controlled, double-blind randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were enrolled by searching Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Online Library, and clinicaltrial.gov. Studies evaluating the safety of ESL on any neurological disorders were included. Adverse events (AEs), serious AEs and AEs-related withdrawals were pooled by direct or indirect meta-analysis. RESULTS: A total of 4067 patients in 13 RCTs (5 for refractory partial epilepsy, 2 for bipolar I disorder, 1 for migraine, 1 for fibromyalgia, 2 for diabetic neuropathic pain, and 2 for post-herpetic neuralgia) were included. Meta-analysis revealed that ESL treatment had a higher incidence of serious AEs and AEs-related withdrawals than the placebo. Of 35 reported AEs, 13 were significantly associated with ESL treatment, including blurred vision, diplopia, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, somnolence, headache, rash, hyponatraemia, increased gamma-glutamyl transferase, and dysarthria. Subgroup analysis revealed that dizziness was the only AE significant at 400 mg/day, while diplopia, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, somnolence, rash, and hyponatremia at 800 mg/day, and blurred vision, diplopia, vertigo, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, somnolence, headache, rash, and hyponatremia at 1200 mg/day were significant. Adjunctive use of ESL in refractory epilepsy significantly led to higher risk for vestibulocerebellar AEs than other disorders. CONCLUSIONS: ESL treatment was related to a range of AEs, especially at high doses or when used as adjunctive therapy in epilepsy. While the majority of AEs of ESL were related to the vestibulocerebellar system, hyponatremia and rash should also be noted by clinicians.

Three series of sulfonate derivatives of paeonol were synthesized and screened in vitro for their anti-oomycete activity against P. capsici, respectively. Among all the compounds, 4m displayed the best promising and pronounced anti-oomycete activity against P. capsici than zoxamide, with the EC50 values of 24.51 and 26.87 mg/L, respectively. The results show that acetyl and 4-OCH3 are two necessary groups. The existence of these two sites is closely related to the anti-oomycete activity. Relatively speaking, hydroxyl group is well tolerated, and the results showed that after modification of hydroxyl group with sulfonyl, the anti-oomycete activity was significantly increased.[Formula: see text].

A simple and green layer-by-layer assembly strategy is developed for the preparation of a highly bioavailable nanocomposite photosensitizer by assembling near-infrared (NIR) light-sensitive porphyrin/G-quadruplex complexes on the surface of a highly biocompatible nanoparticle that is prepared via Zn2+-assisted coordination self-assembly of an amphiphilic amino acid. After being efficiently delivered to the target site and internalized into tumor cells via enhanced permeability and retention effect and interactions between aptamers and tumor markers, the as-prepared nanoassembly can be directly used as an NIR light-responsive photosensitizer for tumor photodynamic therapy (PDT) since the porphyrin/G-quadruplex complexes are exposed on the nanoassembly surface and kept in an active state. It can also disassemble under the synergistic stimuli of an acidic pH environment and overexpressed glutathione, leasing more efficient porphyrin/G-quadruplex composite photosensitizers while reducing the interference caused by glutathione-dependent 1O2 consumption. Since the nanoassembly can work no matter if it is disassembled or not, the compulsory requirement for in vivo photosensitizer release is eliminated, thus resulting in the great improvement of the bioavailability of the photosensitizer. The PDT applications of the nanoassembly were well demonstrated in both in vitro cell and in vivo animal experiments.

PURPOSE: We performed this analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of intravenous levetiracetam (IV LEV) in patients with status epilepticus. METHOD: Studies were searched in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for available randomized controlled trials(RCTs) comparing the efficacy and/or safety of IV LEV with other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Meta-analysis was performed using the random-effects model to calculate risk ratio with the RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS: Six RCTs with a total of 543 patients were included. There was no significant differences in clinical seizure cessation and hospital mortality, either between IV LEV and IV phenytoin (PHT) or between IV LEV and IV valproate (VPA). Compared with IV PHT, IV LEV had a lower risk of poor neurological outcome. For IV LEV compared with IV lorazepam (LOR), no significant difference in efficacy was found, but IV LEV patients had significantly lower need for ventilatory assistance. Adding IV LEV to clonazepam (CNP), compared with adding placebo showed no significant differences in seizure cessation at 15 min. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggested that IV LEV was comparable to IV PHT,VPA, or LOR in efficacy, and IV LEV as add-on therapy of CNP had no superiority in seizure cessation than CNP plus placebo. IV LEV may have a better tolerability than other AEDs do. More RCTs are needed to validate the role of IV LEV in status epilepticus.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Da-Cheng-Qi Decoction (DCQD, ) combined with Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA) on the recovery of gastrointestinal (GI) function in traumatic brain-injured (TBI) mice. METHODS: A total of 150 male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into sham-injury, normal saline (NS), DCQD (0.4 mL/day), LA (⩾1 × 1010 cfu/day LA), DCQD+LA (LA administration at the same dosage after 4 h of feeding DCQD), and ½ DCQD+LA groups (LA administration at the same dosage after 4 h of feeding ½ DCQD dose) by a random number table, 5-8 mice in each group. The sever TBI model was constructed according to Feeney's enhanced gravitational forces of free falling. On days 1, 3, and 7 post-TBI, plasma diamine oxidase (DAO) and D-lactic acid levels were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Occludin expression in the intestinal epithelium was assessed by Western blot analysis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to observe the morphological changes in the network structure of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) and change of enteric nervous system-ICC-smooth muscle cell (ENS-ICC-SMC). Immunofluorescence staining was used to detect changes in the network structure of the ICC. RESULTS: Compared with the NS group, occludin expression in the DCQD+LA group significantly increased on Day 1, 3, and 7 post-TBI (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The concentration of DAO significantly decreased in the LA, DCQD, and DCQD+LA groups on Day 3 and 7, whilst the D-lactate concentrations in the LA and ½ DCQD+LA groups decreased on Day 1 and 3 post-injury (P<0.05 or P<0.01). The NS group experienced a great damage on the ENS-ICC-SMC network morphology and ICC network structure, and all treatment groups had some improvements, among which the DCQD+LA group presented relatively intact network morphology. CONCLUSIONS: DCQD combined with LA treatment could effectively repair the intestinal mucosal barrier and improve GI motility in mice after TBI. The combination of DCQD and LA was more effective than their respective monotherapies.

PURPOSE: We performed a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to evaluate the efficacy of HER2-targeted agents in combination with taxanes and to identify the best strategy for HER2+ metastatic breast cancer (MBC). METHODS: Pubmed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched for randomized controlled trials that evaluated any taxanes+HER2-targeted agents in the treatment of HER2+ MBC. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS). The secondary outcomes included overall response rate (ORR) and progression-free survival (PFS). RESULTS: A total of 13 RCTs were eligible, involving 4941 patients and 10 regimens. The result showed that single-HER2-targeted agent+a taxane did improve the effect on ORR and PFS than taxane alone, but only trastuzumab+a taxane had a significant improvement in OS outcomes. Single-HER2-targeted agent (trastuzumab) combined with taxane-based doublets (taxane+carboplatin/capecitabine/doxorubicin/bevacizumab) showed no further benefit than trastuzumab+a taxane. Doublet-HER2-targeted agents combined with a taxane(trastuzumab+pertuzumab+a taxane) showed further improvement in ORR, PFS, and all OS outcomes than single-HER2-targeted agent+a taxane. Ranking analysis based on their P-scores suggested that trastuzumab+pertuzumab+a taxane was the best combination treatment for all the efficacy outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: These findings demonstrate that combining two HER2-targeted agents (trastuzumab+pertuzumab) with a taxane is much more beneficial for the treatment of HER2+ MBC. Dual HER2-targeted agents combined with a taxane appears to be the preferred application of HER2+ MBC.

Hydroponics experiments were carried out to study the effects of different sizes of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and different pH on the absorption and transportation of Se by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and rice (Oryza sativa L.). The results showed that SeNPs with different sizes (50, 100, and 150 nm) had various characteristics with respect to absorption and translocation in wheat and rice. There was no significant difference in the uptake of SeNPs with different sizes by wheat roots after 24 h and 72 h; however, the highest Se content in wheat shoots was (1.89±0.47) µg·g-1 dry weight (DW) and (5.18±1.51) µg·g-1 DW under the 50 nm SeNPs treatment after 24 h and 72 h, respectively. Moreover, the transfer factor for Se in wheat under the 50 nm SeNPs treatment was 2.38 times higher than that of the 100 nm and 150 nm treatments. The Se content of rice roots treated for 24 h with the 50 nm SeNPs increased by 11.18% and 41.81% compared to those treated with the 100 nm and 150 nm SeNPs, respectively. There were, however, no significant differences in Se content between all of the SeNPs treatments after 72 h. The Se content of rice shoots and the Se transfer factor both reached the maximum when 50 nm SeNPs were applied. In addition, Se absorption by plants was also affected by pH. Specifically, the amount of Se absorbed by wheat roots treated with SeNPs was the greatest at a pH of 6 after 24 h, which was 89.47% higher than wheat treated with selenite. Furthermore, the highest Se transfer factor occurred at a pH of 4 in wheat. The uptake of SeNPs in rice was markedly lower than that of selenite at low pH values (pH=3.5 and 5.5) and SeNPs was more readily transported at a pH of 3.5. These results demonstrate that SeNPs could be taken up by wheat and rice and that it could be transferred more easily as small particle size (50 nm) than the larger ones (100 nm and 150 nm) at low pH values (pH 3.5).

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness of different taxane-containing regimens and to identify the best strategy for the treatment of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative metastatic breast cancer (MBC). DESIGN: Network meta-analysis of 20 randomized controlled trials (RCTs). PATIENTS: A total of 6577 patients with HER2-negative MBC who received treatment (20 different regimens) with taxanes (paclitaxel [4267 patients] or docetaxel [2310 patients]). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched (through March 2019) for RCTs that evaluated any taxane-containing regimens for the treatment of HER2-negative MBC. A network meta-analysis in a Bayesian framework was performed using the random-effects model. We compared the surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) curve for each regimen. Overall, paclitaxel-based combinations were superior to paclitaxel alone in objective response rate (ORR) (odds ratio 1.60, 95% credible interval [CrI] 1.15-2.16) and overall survival (OS) (hazard ratio 1.08, 95% CrI 1.01-1.15). Docetaxel-based combinations were also superior to paclitaxel alone in ORR. Among the paclitaxel-based regimens, based on the results of SUCRA, paclitaxel + bevacizumab + capecitabine was likely to be the most efficacious in improving ORR, OS, and progression-free survival (PFS), whereas paclitaxel + gemcitabine was likely to be the most efficacious in 1-year OS rate. Among the docetaxel-based regimens, based on the results of SUCRA, docetaxel + gemcitabine was likely to be the most efficacious in improving PFS and OS. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrated that paclitaxel-based combinations can provide significant improvement in ORR and OS compared with paclitaxel alone. The regimens of paclitaxel + bevacizumab + capecitabine, docetaxel + gemcitabine, and paclitaxel + gemcitabine may be superior to other regimens for the treatment of HER2-negative MBC.

BACKGROUND: Structured reports are not widely used and thus most reports exist in the form of free text. The process of data extraction by experts is time-consuming and error-prone, whereas data extraction by natural language processing (NLP) is a potential solution that could improve diagnosis efficiency and accuracy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an NLP program that determines American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) descriptors and final assessment categories from breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reports. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 2330 breast MRI reports in the electronic medical record from 2009 to 2017. We used 1635 reports for the creation of a revised BI-RADS MRI lexicon and synonyms lists as well as the iterative development of an NLP system. The remaining 695 reports that were not used for developing the system were used as an independent test set for the final evaluation of the NLP system. The recall and precision of an NLP algorithm to detect the revised BI-RADS MRI descriptors and BI-RADS categories from the free-text reports were evaluated against a standard reference of manual human review. RESULTS: There was a high level of agreement between two manual reviewers, with a κ value of 0.95. For all breast imaging reports, the NLP algorithm demonstrated a recall of 78.5% and a precision of 86.1% for correct identification of the revised BI-RADS MRI descriptors and the BI-RADS categories. NLP generated the total results in <1 s, whereas the manual reviewers averaged 3.38 and 3.23 min per report, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The NLP algorithm demonstrates high recall and precision for information extraction from free-text reports. This approach will help to narrow the gap between unstructured report text and structured data, which is needed in decision support and other applications.

The influence of different Cd(ii) salts on the structure variations and properties has also been investigated. Complexes 1 and 3 present a (4,4) layer motif accomplished by the interconnection of adjacent Cd(ii) cations through L1 molecules and trans-conformational succinates or fumarates. In contrast, the cis-conformational succinates in complex 2 only afford the formation of a chain structure. The L1 and L2 molecules in complexes 4 and 5 adopt the same coordination and join adjacent Cd(ii) cations together with fumarates, giving rise to different 3D networks with vma and irl topologies. The same coordination mode of L1 and L2 in complexes 6-8 joins adjacent Cd(ii) cations together with aromatic dicarboxylates, leading to different (63)(65·8), 2-periodic (6·3) and (4·4) layer motifs. The L2 molecules in complexes 9-13 present different coordination modes and join adjacent Cd(ii) cations together with p-BDC2- dianions to form diverse (6·3) layer motifs, and different 3D networks with cds and eca topologies. Therefore, the diverse coordination modes of the bis(pyridyl) ligand and the feature of different organic dicarboxylate anions can effectively influence the topological structures of these complexes. Luminescence investigation reveals that the emission maximum of these complexes varies from 403 to 433 nm in the solid state at room temperature.

Rapid, reliable and highly selective detection of mercury species, including Hg2+ ions and organomercury, is of significant importance for environmental protection and human health. Herein, a new fluorescent dye 1,1,2,2-tetrakis[4-(3-methyl-1H-benzimidazol-1-yl)phenyl ethylene tetraiodide (Tmbipe) with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) potential was prepared and characterized. The presence of four positively charged methylated benzimidazole groups endows Tmbipe with excellent water solubility and almost undetectable background fluorescence. However, it can coordinate with two Hg2+ ions or two organomercury molecules (e.g. methylmercury and phenylmercury) to form a planar dinuclear HgII tetracarbene complex, which can then self-aggregate to turn on AIE fluorescence. Such a fluorescence turn-on process can be completed in 3 min. In addition, synergic rigidification of the tetraphenylethylene-bridged Tmbipe molecule by mercury-mediated chelate ring formation and subsequent aggregation results in obviously higher fluorescence enhancement than that given by the single aggregation-induced one. Low background, high fluorescence enhancement and rapid response time make Tmbipe a good fluorescent probe for reliable, sensitive and highly selective quantitation of both inorganic and organic mercury species. This probe was also demonstrated to work well for identification of mercury species accumulation in living cells.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to validate the Chinese version of the Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDIE) as a suicidality screening tool in Chinese people with epilepsy (PWE). METHODS: A consecutive cohort of PWE was recruited from West China Hospital and 363 Hospital. Each patient received a psychiatric evaluation with the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) and the Chinese version of the NDDIE (C-NDDIE). Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted. The best possible cutoff was identified with the highest Youden index. Specificity, sensitivity, positive, and negative predictive values were calculated. RESULTS: Among a total of 355 participants, 41 (11.5%) had a moderate to high suicide risk according to the Suicidality Module (SM) of the MINI. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that item 4 ("I'd be better off dead") of the NDDIE had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.930 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.884-0.977), a sensitivity of 80.5%, a specificity of 94.9%, a positive predictive value (PPV) of 68.0%, a negative predictive value (NPV) of 97.7%, and the largest Youden index of 0.754 for a cutoff score of >2. CONCLUSION: Item 4 of the NDDIE is a valuable tool for screening suicidality in Chinese PWE.
