RESUMO

In recent years, many researches have explored the diagnostic value of Raman spectroscopy in multiple types of tumors. However, as an emerging clinical examination method, the diagnostic performance of Raman spectroscopy in lung cancer remains unclear. Relevant diagnostic studies published before 1 June 2020 were retrieved from the Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Internet (CNKI), and WanFang databases. After the literature was screened, two authors extracted the data from eligible studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Obtained data were pooled and analyzed using Stata 16.0, Meta-DiSc 1.4, and RevMan 5.3 software. Fourteen diagnostic studies were eligible for the pooled analysis which includes 779 patients. Total pooled sensitivity and specificity of Raman spectroscopy in diagnosing lung cancer were 0.92 (95% CI 0.87-0.95) and 0.94 (95% CI 0.88-0.97), respectively. The positive likelihood ratio was 15.2 (95% CI 7.5-30.9), the negative likelihood ratio was 0.09 (95% CI 0.05-0.14), and the area under the curve was 0.97 (95 % CI 0.95-0.98). Subgroup analysis suggested that the sensitivity and specificity of RS when analyzing human tissue, serum, and saliva samples were 0.95 (95% CI 0.88-0.98), 0.97 (95% CI 0.89-0.99), 0.88 (95% CI 0.80-0.93), 0.87 (95% CI 0.78-0.92), 0.91 (95% CI 0.80-0.96), and 0.95 (95% CI 0.73-0.99), respectively. No publication bias or threshold effects were detected in this meta-analysis. This initial meta-analysis indicated that Raman spectroscopy is a highly specific and sensitive diagnostic technology for detecting lung cancer. Further investigations are also needed to focus on real-time detection using Raman spectroscopy under bronchoscopy in vivo. Moreover, large-scale diagnostic studies should be conducted to confirm this conclusion.

Weaning is the gradual process of introducing solids or semisolid foods into an infant's diet, in order to ensure their healthy growth. This study developed two kinds of formula weaning food based on roasted or extruded quinoa and millet flour, and evaluated their quality. A fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS)/galacto-oligosaccharide (GOS) mix was added to provide the prebiotic potential. The protein contents of the roasted quinoa-millet complementary food (RQMCF) and extruded quinoa-millet complementary food (EQMCF) were 16.7% and 17.74% higher, respectively, than that of commercial millet complementary food (CMCF). Both RQMCF and EQMCF provided sufficient levels of energy and minerals. Extrusion provided the foods with a lower viscosity, and higher solubility and water absorption ability than roasting. In vitro digestion results showed that EQMCF exhibited the highest starch and protein digestibility (89.76% and 88.72%, respectively) followed by RQMCF (87.75% and 86.63%) and CMCF (83.35% and 81.54%). The digestas of RQMCF and EQMCF after in vitro digestion exhibited prebiotic effects by promoting the growth of the probiotics (Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus delbrueckii). These results will contribute to developing complementary weaning foods for infants. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study has shown that extrusion is an efficient and stable processing method for producing infant complementary foods with low density, balanced nutrition, and high levels of starch and protein digestibility. Extruded quinoa-millet prebiotic complementary food can also promote the proliferation of probiotics. This will provide a new direction for developing novel infant formula weaning foods.

Colloidal CdS sensitized nano-ZnO/chitosan (CdS@n-ZnO/CS) hydrogel was prepared and characterized extensively by XRD, SEM-EDS, TEM, UV-Vis DRS, FT-IR and TGA. The photocatalytic activity of CdS@n-ZnO/CS was evaluated with the photodegradation of congo red (CR) as an organic pollutant under solar light irradiation. The influences of initial dye concentration, catalyst dosage, recycling runs, and radical scavenger on decolorization of CR by CdS@n-ZnO/CS were investigated. 95% of CR was removed in just 1 min for 5.0 mg L-1 and 94.34% of CR was removed in 30 min for 100 mg L-1. CdS@n-ZnO/CS exhibited an excellent and ultra-fast performance toward CR removal under solar light due to the synergistic effect of adsorption by chitosan and photocatalysis by ZnO and CdS in CdS@n-ZnO/CS hydrogel. Radical trapping control experiments indicated that h+ and O2- played the major role for CR decolorization. The high performance of CdS@n-ZnO/CS hydrogel was also demonstrated under natural solar light irradiation, suggesting that CdS@n-ZnO/CS hydrogel could be used in practical wastewater treatment.

Magnetic NiFe2O4 nanoparticles and multi-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized cellulose composite (m-NiFe2O4/MWCNTs@cellulose) as a magnetic bioadsorbent was prepared and used for effectively removing Congo Red (CR) from aqueous solution. The chemical and physical properties of the prepared m-NiFe2O4/MWCNTs@cellulose were characterized by XRD, TGA, FT-IR, VSM, SEM and TEM. Batch experiments were carried out to investigate the adsorption capacity and mechanisms. Effects of different adsorption parameters such as initial CR concentration, adsorbent dosage and temperature were studied. Results demonstrated that m-NiFe2O4/MWCNTs@cellulose had high adsorption capacity for CR from aqueous solution. The obtained experimental data fitted well with the pseudo-second-order equation and followed the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 95.70 mg g-1 for CR. The m-NiFe2O4/MWCNTs@cellulose with rapid magnetic separation and high adsorption capacity can be a promising and recyclable engineering biomaterials for purification and treatment of practical wastewater.

This study aimed to compare the prebiotic effects of oat ß-glucan between steaming and microwave processing by high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that microwave-processed oat ß-glucan with lower average molecular weight (Mw) exhibited a more significant effect in promoting Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium compared with steaming processed oat ß-glucan with higher Mw at the genus level. The overall microbial composition structure results indicated that the relative abundance of Escherichia-Shigella, Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Dialister exhibited significant differences between the samples (p < 0.05). Additionally, the short-chain fatty acid in microwave-processed oat ß-glucan fermentation slurries significantly increased (p < 0.05), and more butyrate was produced from microwave-processed oat ß-glucan, which may be attributed to the higher levels of Blautia and Dialister as butyrate-producers. These results suggest that microwave processing contributed to the degradation of oat ß-glucan and enhanced its prebiotic function.

Loquat fruit is one of the most perishable fruits in China, and has a very limited shelf life because of mechanical injury and microbial decay. Due to an increasing concern about human health and environmental security, antagonistic microorganisms have been a potential alternative for fungicides to control postharvest diseases. In this work, the antifungal effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Bacillus methylotrophicus BCN2 and Bacillus thuringiensis BCN10 against five postharvest pathogens isolated from loquat fruit, Fusarium oxysporum, Botryosphaeria sp., Trichoderma atroviride, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Penicillium expansum were evaluated by in vitro and in vivo experiments. As a result, the VOCs released by BCN2 and BCN10 were able to suppress the mycelial growth of all targeted pathogens according to inhibition ratio in the double petri-dish assay as well as disease incidence and disease diameter on loquat fruits. The main volatile compounds were identified by solid-phase microextraction (SPME)-gas chromatography. These VOCs produced by the two strains played complementary roles in controlling these five molds and enabled loquat fruits to keep fresh for ten days, significantly. This research will provide a theoretic foundation and technical support for exploring the functional components of VOCs applicable in loquat fruit preservation.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) has aroused serious pollution in surface sediment. To date, whether and how iron-based nanoparticles could stimulate TBBPA in situ anaerobic biodegradation in sediment remains poorly understood. In this study, the distinctly enhanced TBBPA degradation activity with the rate constant k improved 4.7 times by fed with Pd/Fe nanoparticles (0.412 g L-1 dosage, 0.5 wt% Pd loading) was observed. TBBPA degradation first went through reductive dehalogenation with bisphenol A (BPA) as the metabolites, and after the addition of Pd/Fe nanoparticles, BPA was further degraded to 4-(allene)phenol and 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propanoic acid via UPLC-QTOF-MS analysis, suggesting the complete detoxification potential. By the addition of Pd/Fe nanoparticles, the large amount of H2 production (560 times higher) and the significant inhibition of methane generation facilitated the metabolism of potential reductive dehalogenators (Desulfovibrio, Clostridium, etc.), demonstrated by their increased ecological abundance and the tighter cooperative interrelations between each other. Meanwhile, the addition of Pd/Fe nanoparticles largely promoted the ecological abundance of Fe(III) reducing and aromatics degrading bacteria (Bacillus, Cryptanaerobacter, etc.), resulting in BPA further degradation. The bacterial ecological network further revealed that the potential BPA degrading bacteria shared the more positive interactions with the potential dehalogenators in the presence of Pd/Fe nanoparticles. The study firstly revealed the addition of Pd/Fe nanoparticles obviously enhanced the respiratory metabolic activities and cooperative interrelations of reductive dehalogenators and BPA degraders, which gives suggestions for in situ remediation and detoxification of BFRs in contaminated sediment.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical and pathologic features as well as prognosis of systemic EBV-positive T-cell lymphoma in children. METHODS: The clinical data including clinical manifestation, pathologic changes and treatment in 16 patients with children's systemic EBV-positive T-cell lymphoma were analyzed retrospectively, and follow-up of patients were carried out. RESULTS: The 16 cases included 12 males and 4  females with median age of 3.3 years old. It was demonstrated that the clinical and pathological features of the children's systemic EBV-positive T-cell lymphoma were as followed fever, hepatosplenomegaly, cytopenia, lymphadenopathy, and hemophagocytosis in bone marrow or organ. Histologically, the structures of lymph node was normal, partially or completely destoryed. The paracortical zone was expanded with prominent infiltration of small to medium-sized atypical lymphocytes. The major immunophenotypic characteristics were as follows: (1) Almost all biopsies exhibited prominent T cell proliferation. (2) CD3 was expressed in 16 patients (100%, 16/16), CD4 in 5 patients (31.3%, 5/16),CD5 in 13 patients (81.3%, 13/16),CD7 was expressed in 11 patients (68.8%, 11/16),CD8 in 15 patients (93.8%, 15/16),CD4 and CD8 were expressed in 5 patients (31.3%, 5/16),CD4 and CD8 double-negative in patients (6.3%, 1/16),16 patients were CD56 negative (100%, 16/16). (3) TCR gene cloning rearrangement in 16 patients (93.8%, 15/16). (4) EBV-EBER was expressed in 16 patients (100%, 16/16). 11 out of 16 cases died, 1 cese failed to be followed up, 1 case relapsed,and 3 cases survived, reseptively. The media survival time was 4 months. CONCLUSION: Systemic EBV-positive T-cell lymphoma predominantly occurred in childhood and early teen-age, and lacks specific clinic features, usually combined with hemophagocytic syndrome. The confirmed diagnosis requires comprehensive analysis of clinical manifestation, pathomorphology, immunohistochemical detection, EBV-EBER insite hybridization, and TCR gene test. The overall prognosis of the disease is poor and the fatality rate is high.

BACKGROUND: Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) bran is a by-product of millet processing, rich in dietary fiber (DF) and has great application value. A comparative study was conducted to explore the differences in structural and functional properties among millet bran DF, soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF). RESULTS: There was a significant difference in the content of monosaccharides between SDF and IDF, in which xylose, arabinose and glucose were the main compositions. The results of scanning electron microscopy showed that DF and IDF had different forms of network structure, and SDF presented a sign of mutual adhesion. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were 0.54 and 0.08 g kg-1 in SDF. Antioxidant activity of SDF was higher than that of IDF based on the evaluation of free radical scavenging and iron reducing capacity in vitro. Meanwhile, the glucose dialysis retardation index of IDF and SDF was 12.59% and 9.26% at 30 min, respectively. And, there was no significant difference in the adsorption capacity of glucose among different samples (P > 0.05). Furthermore, SDF had strong α-amylase inhibition (17.92% inhibition rate) and sodium cholate adsorption capacities; the adsorption amount was 16.76 g kg-1 in 2.00 g L-1 sodium cholate solution. CONCLUSION: Foxtail millet bran DF, especially SDF, has good functional properties and would be a suitable ingredient for health-beneficial food production. However, the relevant verification trials in vivo need to be carried out in the next steps. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Background: The survival outcomes between supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCPL) and total laryngectomy (TL) were compared in the groups of matched-pair patients with T3 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Methods: Patients with T3 LSCC were matched based on prognostic factors. The Kaplan-Meier curve and the Cox proportional hazards model were used for analysis on survival. Results: A total of 212 patients with T3 LSCC were included after matching (106 underwent SCPL and 106 underwent TL). Multivariable analysis showed no differences in overall survival (hazard risk [HR]=1.15; 95% CI: 0.79-1.67; P=0.47), disease-specific survival (HR=1.11; 95% CI: 0.69-1.80; P=0.66), and recurrence-free survival (HR=1.07; 95% CI: 0.68-1.68; P=0.77) between the SCPL group and TL group. Conclusion: SCPL provides reliable therapeutic outcomes and can be used to avoid a TL surgery in some patients with advanced primary laryngeal cancer.

Recently, GaTe and C2N monolayers have been successfully synthesized and show fascinating electronic and optical properties. Such hybrid of GaTe with C2N may induce new novel physical properties. In this work, we perform ab initio simulations on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the GaTe/C2N van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure. Our calculations show that the GaTe/C2N vdW heterostructure is an indirect-gap semiconductor with type-II band alignment, facilitating an effective separation of photogenerated carriers. Intriguingly, it also presents enhanced visible-UV light absorption compared to its components and can be tailored to be a good photocatalyst for water splitting at certain pH by applying vertical strains. Further, we explore specifically the adsorption and decomposition of water molecules on the surface of C2N layer in the heterostructure and the subsequent formation of hydrogen, which reveals the mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen production on the 2D GaTe/C2N heterostructure. Moreover, it is found that in-plane biaxial strains can induce indirect-direct-indirect, semiconductor-metal, and type II to type I or type III transitions. These interesting results make the GaTe/C2N vdW heterostructure a promising candidate for applications in next generation of multifunctional optoelectronic devices.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of malignant pleural effusion (MPE) remains a common clinical challenge because of the sensitivity of conventional cytology for the detection is insufficient. Thus, a sensitive clinical marker for diagnosis is required. The aim of this study was to assess the role of two anti-angiogenic cytokines, soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 (sVEGFR-1) and endostatin, in diagnosing MPE. METHODS: Effusion samples from 44 patients with MPE caused by lung cancer and from 36 patients with benign pleural effusion (BPE) were collected. The concentrations of sVEGFR-1 and endostatin in pleural fluid were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The diagnostic performance was measured by receiver operating characteristic curves (ROCs). RESULTS: The levels of sVEGFR-1 and endostatin in MPE due to lung cancer were significantly higher than those in BPE (p < 0.05). The sensitivity and specificity of endostatin were 52.27% and 86.11%, respectively, while for sVEGFR-1, the sensitivity was 88.64% and the specificity was 58.33%. Interestingly, the combination of sVEGFR1 and endostatin produced better sensitivity and specificity of 72.73% and 83.33%, respectively. In addition, the levels of sVEGFR-1 and endostatin were significantly related to each other (p < 0.05), and the levels of endostatin in bloody effusions were significantly higher than those in non-bloody effusions (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicated that the levels of sVEGFR-1 and endostatin were significantly elevated in MPE. The combined detection of sVEGFR-1 and endostatin may be useful in the diagnosis of MPE.

We present theoretically the transport of plasmonic waves in doped graphene tube, which is made by rolling planar graphene sheet into a cylinder and periodic doping is applied on it. It is shown that periodic modulation of the Fermi level along the tube can open gaps in the dispersion relations of graphene plasmons and eventually create plasmonic band structures. The propagation of graphene plasmons is forbidden within the bandgaps; while within the band, the plasmonic waves present axially-extended field distributions and propagate along the tubes, yet well confined around the curved graphene surface. Furthermore, the bandgaps, propagation constants and propagation lengths of the modes in plasmonic band structures are significantly tuned by varying the Fermi level of graphene, which provides active controls over the plasmonic waves. Our proposed structures here may provide an approach to dynamically control the plasmonic waves in graphene-based subwavelength waveguides.

The Catsper channel is a sperm-specific, Ca2+-permeable, pH-dependent, and low voltage-dependent channel that is essential for the hyperactivity of sperm flagellum, chemotaxis towards the egg, capacitation and acrosome reaction. All of these physiological events require calcium entry into sperm cells. Remarkably, Catsper genes are exclusively expressed in the testis during spermatogenesis, and are sensitive to ion channel-induced pH change, such as NHEs, Ca2+ATPase, K+ channel, Hv1 channel and HCO3- transporters. Furthermore, the Catsper channel is regulated by some physiological stimulants, such as progesterone, cyclic nucleotides (e.g., cAMP, cGMP), zona pellucida (ZP) glycoproteins and bovine serum albumin (BSA). All of these factors normally stimulate Ca2+ entry into sperm through the Catsper channel. In addition, the Catsper channel may be a potential target for male infertility treatment or contraception. This review will focus on the structure, functions, regulation mechanisms and medicinal targets of the Catsper channel.

BACKGROUND: Thyroglossal duct carcinoma (TDCa) is a rare malignancy. Thus, we summarized the clinical characteristics of TDCa to explore the strategy of diagnosis, surgical treatment, and prognosis of patients with papillary TDCa. CASE PRESENTATION: A retrospective study was conducted about the medical records of cases with TDCa. General information including the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and prognosis of patients were obtained and analyzed. A total of 480 patients with thyroglossal duct anomalies were treated in our hospital during 1981 to 2011. Nine patients were identified as papillary TDCa and Sistrunk procedure was performed in these patients. Total thyroidectomy and selected neck dissection were performed in 3 TDCa patients with additional multiple thyroid nodules at presentation, of whom one was diagnosed as papillary thyroid carcinoma and another was found to have lymph node metastases. With a median follow-up of 119 months, all patients were alive with no recurrences or metastases. CONCLUSIONS: Although the incidence of TDCa is very low, early diagnosis and surgical operation of TDCa should be performed as soon as possible. Besides, the pathological examination is the only way to confirm the diagnosis, and surgery, especially Sistrunk's procedure, is the prior choice of the treatments. In the presence of thyroid lesions or cervical lymphadenopathy, total thyroidectomy and neck dissection should be considered.

Previous studies showed that better adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) is associated with lower risk of chronic diseases, but limited data are available on bone health. We investigated the association of the MD with bone mineral density (BMD) in Chinese adults. We included 2371 participants aged 40-75 years in this community-based cross-sectional study. Dietary information was assessed at baseline and a 3-year follow-up. Alternate Mediterranean diet (aMed) scores were calculated. BMD was determined at the second survey. After adjusting for potential covariates, higher aMed scores were positively and dose-dependently associated with BMD (all P-trends < 0.05). The BMD values were 1.94% (whole body), 3.01% (lumbar spine), 2.80% (total hip), 2.81% (femur neck), 2.62% (trochanter), and 2.85% (intertrochanter) higher in the quintile 5 (highest, vs. quintile 1) aMed scores for all of the subjects (all P-values < 0.05). Similar associations were found after stratifying by gender (P-interaction = 0.338-0.968). After excluding the five non-significant components of vegetables, legumes, fish, monounsaturated to saturated fat ratio, and alcohol intake from the aMed scores, the percentage mean differences were substantially increased by 69.1-150% between the extreme quintiles. In conclusion, increased adherence to the MD shows protective associations with BMD in Chinese adults.

Previous studies have demonstrated that betaine supplements increase lean body mass in livestock and improve muscle performance in human beings, but evidence for its effect on human lean mass is limited. Our study assessed the association of circulating betaine with lean mass and its composition in Chinese adults. A community-based study was conducted on 1996 Guangzhou residents (weight/mass: 1381/615) aged 50-75 years between 2008 and 2010. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect general baseline information. Fasting serum betaine was assessed using HPLC-MS. A total of 1590 participants completed the body composition analysis performed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry during a mean of 3·2 years of follow-up. After adjustment for age, regression analyses demonstrated a positive association of serum betaine with percentage of lean mass (LM%) of the entire body, trunk and limbs in men (all P<0·05) and LM% of the trunk in women (P=0·016). Each sd increase in serum betaine was associated with increases in LM% of 0·609 (whole body), 0·811 (trunk), 0·422 (limbs), 0·632 (arms) and 0·346 (legs) in men and 0·350 (trunk) in women. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the prevalence of lower LM% decreased by 17 % (whole body) and 14 % (trunk) in women and 23 % (whole body), 28 % (trunk), 22 % (arms) and 26 % (percentage skeletal muscle index) in men with each sd increment in serum betaine. Elevated circulating betaine was associated with a higher LM% and lower prevalence of lower LM% in middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults, particularly men.

This study aimed to elucidate the associations of age, BMI, and years of menstruation with proximal femur strength in Chinese postmenopausal women, which may improve the prediction of hip fracture risk. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 1322 Chinese postmenopausal women recruited from communities. DXA images were used to generate bone mineral density (BMD) and geometric parameters, including cross-sectional area (CSA), outer diameter (OD), cortical thickness (CT), section modulus (SM), buckling ratio (BR) at the narrow neck (NN), intertrochanter (IT), and femoral shaft (FS). Relationships of age, BMI, and years of menstruation with bone phenotypes were analyzed with the adjustment of height, age at menarche, total daily physical activity, education, smoking status, calcium tablet intake, etc. Age was associated with lower BMD, CSA, CT, SM, and higher BR (p < 0.05), which indicated a weaker bone strength at the proximal femur. BMI and years of menstruation had the positive relationships with proximal femur strength (p < 0.05). Further analyses showed that the ranges of absolute value of change slope per year, per BMI or per year of menstruation were 0.14%-1.34%, 0.20%-2.70%, and 0.16%-0.98%, respectively. These results supported that bone strength deteriorated with aging and enhanced with higher BMI and longer time of years of menstruation in Chinese postmenopausal women.

Previous studies have suggested that vitamin E (VE) may affect bone health, but the findings have been inconclusive. We examined the relationship between VE status (in both diet and serum) and bone mineral density (BMD) among Chinese adults. This community-based study included 3203 adults (2178 women and 1025 men) aged 40-75 years from Guangzhou, People's Republic of China. General and dietary intake information were collected using structured questionnaire interviews. The serum α-tocopherol (TF) level was quantified by reversed-phase HPLC. The BMD of the whole body, the lumbar spine and left hip sites (total, neck, trochanter, intertrochanter and Ward's triangle) were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. In women, the dietary intake of VE was significantly and positively associated with BMD at the lumbar spine, total hip, intertrochanter and femur neck sites after adjusting for covariates (P(trend): 0·001-0·017). Women in quartile 3 of VE intake typically had the highest BMD; the covariate-adjusted mean BMD were 2·5, 3·06, 3·41 and 3·54% higher, respectively, in quartile 3 (v. 1) at the four above-mentioned sites. Similar positive associations were observed between cholesterol-adjusted serum α-TF levels and BMD at each of the studied bone sites (P(trend): 0·001-0·022). The covariate-adjusted mean BMD were 1·24-4·83% greater in quartile 4 (v. 1) in women. However, no significant associations were seen between the VE levels (dietary or serum) and the BMD at any site in men. In conclusion, greater consumption and higher serum levels of VE are associated with greater BMD in Chinese women but not in Chinese men.

BACKGROUND: Former studies suggested an adverse effect of hypervitaminosis A on bone health, while the effects of retinol and its precursor (ß-carotene) remain uncertain in populations consuming vitamin A (VA) mainly from plant sources. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association of serum, dietary retinol, and ß-carotene with bone mineral density (BMD) in Chinese adults. METHODS: We recruited 2101 women and 1053 men (aged 40-75 years) in Guangzhou, China. Dietary intake was assessed through face-to-face interviews with food-frequency questionnaires at baseline and 3 years later. Serum levels of retinol and ß-carotene were determined by HPLC using a baseline specimen, and the BMD for the whole body (WB), lumbar spine (LS), total hip (TH), and femur neck (FN) were measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry at follow-up. RESULTS: In general, greater levels of serum retinol, ß-carotene, and the ß-carotene-to-retinol ratio were associated with a higher BMD after adjustment for potential covariates in the total sample. BMD values in the top (vs. bottom) quartile were increased by 2.06% (TH) for retinol; 2.87% (WB), 2.51% (LS), 3.10% (FN) for ß-carotene; 2.21% (WB) and 2.05% (FN) for the ß-carotene-to-retinol ratio in the total sample (all p<0.05). A significant positive association with BMD was observed for dietary intake of ß-carotene and total VA in retinol equivalents at the hip sites in the total sample. CONCLUSION: Higher circulating and dietary levels of VA and ß-carotene and higher serum ß-carotene-to-retinol ratios were positively associated with BMD in Chinese adults consuming relatively low levels of VA, mainly from plant foods.
