RESUMO

The human rights and mega sport events (SMEs) discourses gain massive importance and have grown immensely in recent years. Most of the time, the sports governance bodies are responsible for administration and management of these sport mega events. Keeping in consideration the situation regarding increasing involvement, the study focuses on the field of sport along with pleasure and basic rights. Through re-evaluation the commercial factors of sports, the mega governing bodies of sport (IOC & FIFA), and researchers discuss what is referred to commonly as Ruggie Principle, and both would be applied to IOC & FIFA practices, operation, and management regarding their events. This study is essential as it emphasizes the contribution and importance of carrying out human rights impact assessments, particularly in the context of hosting rights. The survey's findings reveal that human rights and due diligence assessments are integral components of organizations such as FIFA and the IOC. This study, being an empirical investigation, allowed us to arrive at some normative conclusions that had significant implications for practices and policy issues. Additionally, it laid the groundwork for future research in the crucial area of SMEs globally.

RESUMO

The upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games could face environmental challenges related to heat, air quality and water quality. These challenges will pose potential threats to athletes and impact thousands of stakeholders and millions of spectators. Recognising the multifaceted nature of these challenges, a range of strategies will be essential for mitigating adverse effects on participants, stakeholders and spectators alike. From personalised interventions for athletes and attendees to comprehensive measures implemented by organisers, a holistic approach is crucial to address these challenges and the possible interplay of heat, air and water quality factors during the event. This evidence-based review highlights various environmental challenges anticipated at Paris 2024, offering strategies applicable to athletes, stakeholders and spectators. Additionally, it provides recommendations for Local Organising Committees and the International Olympic Committee that may be applicable to future Games. In summary, the review offers solutions for consideration by the stakeholders responsible for and affected by the anticipated environmental challenges at Paris 2024.

RESUMO

Cationic surfactants are used in many industrial processes and in consumer products with concurrent release into the aquatic environment, where they may accumulate in aquatic organisms to regulatoryly relevant thresholds. Here, we aimed to better understand the bioconcentration behavior of three selected cationic surfactants, namely N,N-dimethyldecylamine (T10), N-methyldodecylamine (S12), and N,N,N-trimethyltetradecylammonium cation (Q14), in the cells of fish liver (RTL-W1) and gill (RTgill-W1) cell lines. We conducted full mass balances for bioconcentration tests with the cell cultures, in which the medium, the cell surface, the cells themselves, and the plastic compartment were sampled and quantified for each surfactant by HPLC MS/MS. Accumulation in/to cells correlated with the surfactants' alkyl chain lengths and their membrane lipid-water partitioning coefficient, DMLW. Cell-derived bioconcentration factors (BCF) of T10 and S12 were within a factor of 3.5 to in vivo BCF obtained from the literature, while the cell-derived BCF values for Q14 were >100 times higher than the in vivo BCF. From our experiments, rainbow trout cell lines appear as a suitable conservative in vitro screening method for bioconcentration assessment of cationic surfactants and are promising for further testing.

RESUMO

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs) has various different risk factors, numerous signs and symptoms and is heavily influenced by one's environment. Accordingly, there is no singular validated diagnostic test. This 2023 International Olympic Committee's REDs Clinical Assessment Tool-V.2 (IOC REDs CAT2) implements a three-step process of: (1) initial screening; (2) severity/risk stratification based on any identified REDs signs/symptoms (primary and secondary indicators) and (3) a physician-led final diagnosis and treatment plan developed with the athlete, coach and their entire health and performance team. The CAT2 also introduces a more clinically nuanced four-level traffic-light (green, yellow, orange and red) severity/risk stratification with associated sport participation guidelines. Various REDs primary and secondary indicators have been identified and 'weighted' in terms of scientific support, clinical severity/risk and methodological validity and usability, allowing for objective scoring of athletes based on the presence or absence of each indicator. Early draft versions of the CAT2 were developed with associated athlete-testing, feedback and refinement, followed by REDs expert validation via voting statements (ie, online questionnaire to assess agreement on each indicator). Physician and practitioner validity and usability assessments were also implemented. The aim of the IOC REDs CAT2 is to assist qualified clinical professionals in the early and accurate diagnosis of REDs, with an appropriate clinical severity and risk assessment, in order to protect athlete health and prevent prolonged and irreversible outcomes of REDs.

RESUMO

Nutrition plays an important role in improving sports performance. The present study aimed at nutritional assessment and examined the relationship between athletic performance and body composition in soccer referees at different levels. The study participants were 120 male soccer referees. 5, 10 and 30 metres (m) sprint tests to measure speed and cooper test for physical fitness were applied in the referees. Participants were divided into two groups as city and class soccer referee. The anthropometric measurements, excluding fat mass (FM) (%), were higher in class referees. Fat mass (%) differences (14⋅1 ± 4⋅28 v. 12⋅3 ± 4⋅41) were statistically significant (P < 0⋅05). Daily energy and nutrient intakes were similar. The inadequacy percentages of energy, vitamin A and calcium were the highest (29⋅2, 30⋅0 and 34⋅2 %, respectively). It was found that a negative significant correlation between FM% and cooper test score (P < 0⋅01; r = -0⋅35), a positive significant correlation between FM% and 5, 10 and 30 m sprint test scores (P < 0⋅01, r = 0⋅38; P < 0⋅01, r = 0⋅38 and P < 0⋅01, r = 0⋅48, respectively). Similarly, there was a negative significant correlation between waist circumference (WC) and cooper test score (P < 0⋅01; r = -0⋅31), a positive significant correlation between WC and 5, 10 and 30 m sprint test scores (P < 0⋅01, r = 0⋅33; P < 0⋅01, r = 0⋅40; P < 0⋅01, r = 0⋅33, respectively). Nutritional recommendations for soccer referees should be made specific to the individual, considering body composition, training intensity and match frequency by a dietician.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dexmedetomidine has analgesic properties, but the intraoperative analgesic effect of dexmedetomidine is often masked by the effects of other general anaesthetics. Therefore, the degree to which it reduces intraoperative pain intensity remains unclear. The objective of this double-blind, randomised controlled trial was to evaluate the independent intraoperative analgesic efficacy of dexmedetomidine in real-time. METHODS: This single-centre study enrolled 181 patients who were hospitalised for below-knee orthopaedic surgeries between 19 January 2021 to 3 August 2021 were eligible for this is single-centre study. Peripheral neural block was performed on patients scheduled for below-knee orthopaedic surgeries. Patients were randomly assigned to the dexmedetomidine or midazolam group and were intravenously administered with 1.5 µg kg-1 h-1 dexmedetomidine or 50 µg kg-1 h-1 midazolam, respectively. The analgesic efficacy was evaluated using the real-time non-invasive nociception monitoring. The primary endpoint was the attainment rate of the nociception index target. The secondary endpoints included the occurrence of intraoperative hypoxemia, haemodynamic parameters, the consciousness index, electromyography and patient outcomes. RESULTS: On Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, the defined nociception index target was attained in 95.45% and 40.91% of patients receiving dexmedetomidine and midazolam, respectively. Log-rank analysis revealed that the dexmedetomidine group attained the nociception index target significantly faster and the median attainment time of the nociception index target in the dexmedetomidine group was 15 min. Dexmedetomidine group was associated with a significantly lower incidence of hypoxemia. There was no significant difference in blood pressure between the dexmedetomidine and midazolam groups. Further, the dexmedetomidine group had a lower maximum visual analogue scale score and lower analgesic consumption postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: Dexmedetomidine has independent analgesia and systemically administered as an adjuvant agent has better analgesic efficacy than midazolam without severe side effects. RESUMO

Permanent rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) cell lines represent potential in vitro alternatives to experiments with fish. We here developed a method to assess the bioaccumulation potential of anionic organic compounds in fish, using the rainbow trout liver-derived RTL-W1 cell line. Based on the availability of high quality in vivo bioconcentration (BCF) and biomagnification (BMF) data and the substances' charge state at physiological pH, four anionic compounds were selected: pentachlorophenol (PCP), diclofenac (DCF), tecloftalam (TT) and benzotriazol-tert-butyl-hydroxyl-phenyl propanoic acid (BHPP). The fish cell line acute toxicity assay (OECD TG249) was used to derive effective concentrations 50 % and non-toxic exposure concentrations to determine exposure concentrations for bioaccumulation experiments. Bioaccumulation experiments were performed over 48 h with a total of six time points, at which cell, medium and plastic fractions were sampled and measured using high resolution tandem mass spectrometry after online solid phase extraction. Observed cell internal concentrations were over-predicted by KOW-derived predictions while pH-dependent octanol-water partitioning (DOW) and membrane lipid-water partitioning (DMLW) gave better predictions of cell internal concentrations. Measured medium and cell internal concentrations at steady state were used to calculate RTL-W1-based BCF, which were compared to DOW- or DMLW-based model approaches and in vivo data. With the exception of PCP, the cell-derived BCF best compared to DOW-based model predictions, which were higher than predictions based on DMLW. All methods predicted the in vivo BCF for diclofenac well. For PCP, the cell-derived BCF was lowest although all BCF predictions underestimated the in vivo BCF by ≥ 1 order of magnitude. The RTL-W1 cells, and all other prediction methods, largely overestimated in vivo BMF, which were available for PCP, TT and BHPP. We conclude that the RTL-W1 cell line can supplement BCF predictions for anionic compounds. For BMF estimations, however, in vitro-in vivo extrapolations need adaptation or a multiple cell line approach.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: There has been much debate recently on the participation of transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) athletes in sport, particularly in relation to fairness, safety and inclusion. The 2021 IOC Framework on Fairness, Inclusion and Non-discrimination acknowledges the central role that eligibility criteria play in ensuring fairness, particularly in the female category, and states that athletes should not be excluded solely on the basis of their TGD identity. AIMS: To identify policies that address TGD athlete participation in the 15 major United Kingdom (UK) sporting organisations and to summarise the evidence for each of these policies. METHODS: A scoping review of TGD policies from the 15 major UK sporting organisations. RESULTS: Eleven of the governing bodies had publicly available TGD policies. Most of the sporting associations drew guidance from the official 2015 IOC Consensus Meeting on Sex Reassignment and Hyperandrogenism, particularly with regard to physiological testosterone levels. Many organisations referenced their policies as a guide for decision making but stated that they ultimately made case-by-case decisions on an athlete's eligibility. Relevant considerations not addressed in most policies included pre- versus post-pubertal athletes, justification for testosterone thresholds, the length of time out of competitive action (if any) for transitioning athletes, the irreversible advantage from male puberty (if any), the responsibility for and frequency of follow up for hormonal testing and the consequences for athletes outside set testosterone limits. CONCLUSIONS: There is a lack of consensus among the top 15 UK sporting organizations relating to elite sport participation for TGD athletes. It would be useful for sport organizations to work together to develop greater standardization/consensus for TGD athlete policies, taking into consideration fairness, safety and inclusion in each sport.

RESUMO

Several sports have published consensus statements on methods and reporting of epidemiological studies concerning injuries and illnesses with football (soccer) producing one of the first guidelines. This football-specific consensus statement was published in 2006 and required an update to align with scientific developments in the field. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently released a sports-generic consensus statement outlining methods for recording and reporting epidemiological data on injury and illness in sport and encouraged the development of sport-specific extensions. The Fédération Internationale de Football Association Medical Scientific Advisory Board established a panel of 16 football medicine and/or science experts, two players and one coach. With a foundation in the IOC consensus statement, the panel performed literature reviews on each included subtopic and performed two rounds of voting prior to and during a 2-day consensus meeting. The panel agreed on 40 of 75 pre-meeting and 21 of 44 meeting voting statements, respectively. The methodology and definitions presented in this comprehensive football-specific extension should ensure more consistent study designs, data collection procedures and use of nomenclature in future epidemiological studies of football injuries and illnesses regardless of setting. It should facilitate comparisons across studies and pooling of data.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) has been the gold standard for diagnosing biliary atresia (BA). Our study attempted to diagnose BA using laparoscopic fluorescein cholangiography (LFC). METHODS: We retrospectively included 18 patients with preoperative suspected BA as the case group and 4 without extrahepatic biliary obstruction requiring laparoscopic surgery as the control group. All patients received indocyanine green (ICG) intravenously at 0.05 mg/Kg. The first 6 patients in the case group underwent IOC and LFC simultaneously, and the control group completed LFC. The imaging characteristics of LFC were recorded and summarized by the conventional and fluorescence mode of the endoscopic fluorescence imaging system (DPM-ENDOCAM-03). On this basis, 12 patients in the case group were diagnosed as BA according to LFC without IOC, and all 18 patients completed open Kasai surgery to confirm the diagnosis. RESULTS: Laparoscopic fluorescence mode in BA detected liver fluorescence but no visualization of the extrahepatic bile ducts. However, the extrahepatic bile ducts in the control group were visible. Based on the imaging characteristics summarized from the LFC of the first 6 cases with BA in the case group, the remaining 12 cases who only underwent LFC were also successfully diagnosed with BA. Furthermore, the formation of hepatic hilar fibrous mass was found in all the patients during the open Kasai procedure, which confirmed the BA diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: LFC appears as a specific pattern in BA and may be used for intraoperative diagnosis of BA. It has the advantages of simplicity, short time-consuming, and no radiation damage.

RESUMO

Introduction: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) imposes very specific ideas on sports governance, more precisely on sports autonomy, on countries joining the Olympic Movement. Given that the idea of sports autonomy originated in the Global North, this article introduces the concept of governance transplants to evaluate the impact that being part of the Olympic Movement has on domestic sports governance in Global South developing countries. The article explores the extent to which the IOC is successful in implementing the norms and regulations on sports autonomy as a governance transplant at the national level in countries from the Global South that are part of the Olympic Movement. Methods: The article employs a comparative qualitative case study research design that explores the relations of the IOC, National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and national governments in Botswana, Guatemala and Sri Lanka. Research relies on a mix of document analyses and expert semi-structured interviews conducted during field trips to those countries. Interviews were transcribed and analyzed by means of thematic analysis. The analyses focus on domestic policies and contexts, formal and institutional compliance with sports autonomy, provision of public funding, and participation in national sport policy-making. Results and discussion: Findings suggest that national structures and legacies have an impact on the way in which the autonomy of sport, as the governance transplant, is translated in those three countries. Although national governments enjoy some agency in "translating" governance transplants, results also suggest that misfits and tensions persist between governmental and sport stakeholders at the national and international level. Such misfits might force the IOC, as a private transnational regulator, to adopt a more pragmatic view on the enforcing of its governance transplants. The results are of relevance to existing discussions on global sports governance and debates as to whether the countries in the Global North might be able to impose their views and their governance transplants if the Global South gets a greater say in transnational sports governance.

RESUMO

The early diagnosis of biliary atresia (BA) in cholestatic infants is critical to the success of the treatment. Intraoperative cholangiography (IOC), an invasive imaging technique, is the current strategy for the diagnosis of BA. Ultrasonography has advanced over recent years and emerging techniques such as shear wave elastography (SWE) have the potential to improve BA diagnosis. This review sought to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of advanced ultrasonography techniques in the diagnosis of BA. Six databases (CINAHL, Medline, PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science (core collection), and Embase) were searched for studies assessing the diagnostic performance of advanced ultrasonography techniques in differentiating BA from non-BA causes of infantile cholestasis. The meta-analysis was performed using Meta-DiSc 1.4 and Comprehensive Meta-analysis v3 software. Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool version 2 (QUADAS-2) assessed the risk of bias. Fifteen studies consisting of 2185 patients (BA = 1105; non-BA = 1080) met the inclusion criteria. SWE was the only advanced ultrasonography technique reported and had a good pooled diagnostic performance (sensitivity = 83%; specificity = 77%; AUC = 0.896). Liver stiffness indicators were significantly higher in BA compared to non-BA patients (p < 0.000). SWE could be a useful tool in differentiating BA from non-BA causes of infantile cholestasis. Future studies to assess the utility of other advanced ultrasonography techniques are recommended.

RESUMO

Glyphosate, an ionizable organic herbicide, is frequently detected in soils and groundwater globally despite its strong retention via sorption. Understanding its apparent mobility hinges on our ability to quantify its system-specific sorption behavior, hindered by its affinity to adsorb onto sediments, yielding very low aqueous concentrations. Here, we present findings from a saturated flow-through column experiment in which we monitored glyphosate sorption onto a natural calcareous aquifer sediment, using the noninvasive geophysical method spectral induced polarization (SIP). Our kinetic sorption reactive transport model predicted the strong nonlinear reversible retention of glyphosate and reproduced the spatial profile of retained glyphosate in the sediment, with a measured maximum of 0.06 mg g-1. The strong contribution of sorption to pore fluid conduction masked the expected variations in imaginary conductivity, σ″. However, time constants derived from a Cole-Cole model matched the timing and spatial distribution of model-predicted sorbed concentration changes, increasing from 0.8 × 10-3 to 1.7 × 10-3 s with an increase in sorbed glyphosate of 0.1 mg g-1. Thus, glyphosate sorption modified the surface charging properties of the sediment proportional to the solid-bound concentrations. Our findings link SIP signal variations to sorption dynamics and provide a framework for improved monitoring of charged organic contaminants in natural sediments.

RESUMO

Acute illnesses affecting the respiratory tract are common and form a significant component of the work of Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) clinicians. Acute respiratory illness (ARill) can broadly be classified as non-infective ARill and acute respiratory infections (ARinf). The aim of this consensus is to provide the SEM clinician with an overview and practical clinical approach to ARinf in athletes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Medical and Scientific Commission appointed an international consensus group to review ARill (non-infective ARill and ARinf) in athletes. Six subgroups of the IOC Consensus group were initially established to review the following key areas of ARill in athletes: (1) epidemiology/risk factors for ARill, (2) ARinf, (3) non-infective ARill including ARill due to environmental exposure, (4) acute asthma and related conditions, (5) effects of ARill on exercise/sports performance, medical complications/return-to-sport and (6) acute nasal/vocal cord dysfunction presenting as ARill. Several systematic and narrative reviews were conducted by IOC consensus subgroups, and these then formed the basis of sections in the consensus documents. Drafting and internal review of sections were allocated to 'core' members of the consensus group, and an advanced draft of the consensus document was discussed during a meeting of the main consensus core group in Lausanne, Switzerland on 11 to 12 October 2021. Final edits were completed after the meeting. This consensus document (part 1) focusses on ARinf, which accounts for the majority of ARill in athletes. The first section of this consensus proposes a set of definitions and classifications of ARinf in athletes to standardise future data collection and reporting. The remainder of the consensus paper examines a wide range of clinical considerations related to ARinf in athletes: epidemiology, risk factors, pathology/pathophysiology, clinical presentation and diagnosis, management, prevention, medical considerations, risks of infection during exercise, effects of infection on exercise/sports performance and return-to-sport guidelines.

RESUMO

In 2021, the International Olympic Committee ventured virtual space by launching their first ever Olympic Virtual Series - featuring virtual baseball, cycling, rowing, sailing and motor racing. Interestingly, all these virtual events take strongly after their physical counterparts. Which begs the question: Where are the massively popular esports games like Fortnite, League of Legends, and Dota?-What do the Olympic Virtual Series have that these popular video games do not? Here, we argue for the inclusion of esports within the Olympic program. In many respects, esports "act" and "behave" just like traditional sports. We argue that esports and traditional sports share many of the same values, like the values of meritocracy, competition, fair play, and the value of having a "level playing field". Yet, in esports, many of these values remain underappreciated, losing out to negative values such as physical inactivity and game-addiction. To preserve what is worth preserving, we borrow from Value Sensitive Design to ameliorate the design-tensions that are foregrounded in esports. Thereby, paving possible ways toward the inclusion of esports in the Olympic program. Ultimately, the question for the IOC should not be "does it look like 'real sport', as we know it?", but rather: are they sporting, rule-led, and fair activities worth preserving and setting an example for a new digitally savvy generation?

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Decades of debate surround the use of intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) during cholecystectomy. To the present day, the role of IOC is controversial as regards decreasing the rate of bile duct injury (BDI). We aimed to review and analyse the available literature on the benefits of IOC during cholecystectomy. METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed until 19 October 2020 in five databases using the following search keys: cholangiogra* and cholecystectomy. The primary outcomes were BDI and retained stone rate. To investigate the differences between the groups (routine IOC vs selective IOC and IOC vs no IOC), we calculated weighted mean differences (WMD) for continuous outcomes and relative risks (RR) for dichotomous outcomes, with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Of the 19,863 articles, 38 were selected and 32 were included in the quantitative synthesis. Routine IOC showed no superiority compared to selective IOC in decreasing BDI (RR = 0.91, 95% CI 0.66; 1.24). Comparing IOC and no IOC, no statistically significant differences were found in the case of BDI, retained stone rate, readmission rate, and length of hospital stay. We found an increased risk of conversion rate to open surgery in the no IOC group (RR = 0.64, CI 0.51; 0.78). The operation time was significantly longer in the IOC group compared to the no IOC group (WMD = 11.25 min, 95% CI 6.57; 15.93). CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that IOC may not be indicated in every case, however, the evidence is very uncertain. Further good quality research is required to address this question.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral joint (PFJ) disease is a common ailment in elite athletes. Our aim is to report the frequency of superolateral Hoffa's fat pad (SHFP) edema, and PFJ cartilage damage and bone marrow lesions (BML), among Olympian athletes, and to study the association between measurements of trochlear morphology and vertical patellar position and a) PFJ cartilage damage or BML, and b) SHFP edema. METHODS: All knee MRI, performed in the Olympic Village and polyclinics, of participating athletes in the 2016 Olympic Games of Rio de Janeiro were included. MRI were scored for PFJ cartilage damage and BML, and SHFP edema. Trochlear morphology measurements included sulcus angle, trochlear angle, lateral trochlear inclination, and medial trochlear inclination. Insall-Salvati ratio was also assessed. RESULTS: One hundred twenty-one knee MRIs were included (62 female, 51.2 %). The highest frequencies of PFJ cartilage damage, combination of PFJ cartilage damage and BML, and SHFP edema were found among Beach Volleyball and Volleyball athletes. SHFP edema was more common among female compared to male Olympian athletes. We found no statistically significant associations between different measurements of trochlear morphology/vertical patellar position, and 1. SHFP edema, and 2. PFJ cartilage damage/BML. CONCLUSION: SHFP edema and the combination of PFJ cartilage damage and BML are highly frequent among Olympic athletes especially those competing in Beach volleyball and Volleyball. SHFP edema is more common among female athletes. Further studies are needed to determine whether PFJ cartilage damage has a stronger association to sports disciplines rather than trochlear morphology.

RESUMO

The integrated vertical flow (IVF) constructed wetland consists of two or more chambers with heterogeneous flow patterns and strong aeration capability, possesses favorable remediation performance. The Constructed Wetland Model No.1 (CWM1) embedded in the OpenGeoSys # IPHREEQC was applied to investigate the wetland plant effects on treatment efficiency. Two fundamental functions of the plant roots (i) the radial oxygen loss (ROL) and (ii) exudation of internal organic carbon (IOC), are developed and implemented in the model to simulate the treating processes of planted laboratory-scale IVF wetlands fed by the synthetic wastewater. The good agreement between simulated results and measurements of the planted IVF wetland and the unplanted filters mimicking wetland demonstrates the combined effects of ROL and IOC and the model reliability. In summer the ammonia (NH4-N) and total nitrogen (TN) removals are high as above 90% in both IVF wetlands, and in winter they decline significantly to around 55% and 45% in unplanted wetland, contrastively to about 85% and 78% in the planted wetland. The nitrogen removal - COD/N ratio relation curves of IVF wetlands are proposed and obtained by modeling to evaluate organic carbon loading status. Based on the curves, the COD/N ratios of unplanted and planted wetlands are about 3∼7 and 3∼10 gCOD/gN for high TN removal respectively. Planted wetlands can tolerate a wider range of COD/N ratio influents than unplanted ones. The ROL in the unplanted wetland promotes COD and NH4-N removal, while may inhibit denitrification under low-temperature conditions. The single addition of IOC enhances the oxygen-consuming and restrains the nitrification under the full loaded COD condition. Summing up all organic carbon releases from substrate and roots as IOC, the quantification of IOC acts on nitrogen treatment was simulated and compared with the external organic carbon (EOC) loading from influent. IOC performs higher efficiency on TN removal than EOC at the same organic loading rates. The results provide the thoughts of the solution for low TN removal in the carbon deficient constructed wetlands.
