RESUMO

The 88thAnnual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society (JCS2024) was held from Friday, March 8thto Sunday, March 10thin Kobe, Japan. The main theme of this 3-day meeting was "The Future of Cardiology: Challenges in Overcoming Cardiovascular Disease". As COVID-19 has been finally conquered, with revision of its categorization under the Infectious Disease Control Law and relaxation of infection prevention measures, it was once again possible to have face-to-face presentations and lively discussion. JCS2024 was a major success, with 19,209 participants and attendees, thanks to the greatly appreciated cooperation and support from all affiliates.

RESUMO

The 87thAnnual Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society (JCS2023) was held in March 2023 in Fukuoka, Japan, marking the first in-person gathering after the COVID-19 pandemic. With the theme of "New Challenge With Next Generation" the conference emphasized the development of future cardiovascular leaders and technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI). Notable sessions included the Mikamo Lecture on heart failure and the Mashimo Lecture on AI in medicine. Various hands-on sessions and participatory events were well received, promoting learning and networking. Post-event surveys showed high satisfaction among participants, with positive feedback on face-to-face interactions and the overall experience. JCS2023, attended by 17,852 participants, concluded successfully, marking a significant milestone in post-pandemic meetings, and advancing cardiovascular medicine.

Background: Diagnosis of cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) is sometimes difficult due to a low positive rate of epithelioid granulomas by endomyocardial biopsy (EMB). Accordingly, Japanese guidelines can allow the CS diagnosis using clinical data alone without EMB results (clinical CS) since 2006. However, little is known about prognosis and outcome of clinical CS. Objectives: Purpose of this study was to analyze the prognosis, outcomes, and response to corticosteroid of clinical CS using large-scale cohort survey. Methods: Overall, 422 CS patients (mean age 60 ± 13 years, 68% female, median follow-up period of 5 years), including 345 clinical CS and 77 EMB-positive patients, histologically diagnosed CS (histological CS) by Japanese guidelines, were enrolled and examined. Results: Clinical profile (age, sex, initial cardiac arrhythmias, and abnormal uptake of gallium-67 scintigraphy or 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in heart) was similar in both groups. Although clinical CS had better prognosis (P = 0.018) and outcome (all-cause death, appropriate defibrillator therapy, and heart transplantation; P = 0.008), multivariate Cox hazard analysis revealed that left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and sustained ventricular tachycardia history were independently associated with outcome (P < 0.001 and P = 0.002, respectively), but not with the diagnosed CS category. Moreover, similar LVEF recovery after corticosteroid was observed in both groups with low LVEF (≤35%) at the 1-year follow-up period (P < 0.001). Conclusions: In clinical CS according to the Japanese guideline, prophylactic implantable-cardioverter-defibrillator and immunosuppressive therapy are important in patients with low LVEF or ventricular tachycardia history, similar to histological CS.

Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis is a progressive and life-threating disease that is significantly underdiagnosed, and the actual number of patients with the disease is presently unknown. Accumulation of wild-type transthyretin-derived amyloid in the heart is a common finding in very elderly patients. Recent clinical trials demonstrated that tafamidis reduced all-cause death and the number of cardiovascular hospitalizations when compared with placebo. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare approved tafamidis (Vyndaqel®, Pfizer Inc.) for the treatment of cardiomyopathy caused by both wild-type and mutated transthyretin-derived amyloidoses. This scientific statement on transthyretin-derived cardiac amyloidosis summarizes the conditions for reimbursement of the cost of tafamidis therapy, and the institutional and physician requirements for the introduction of tafamidis.

RESUMO

The 82nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society was held in Osaka, Japan, on March 23-25, 2018, when the cherry blossoms were just opening everywhere around the venue. This was the 5th Annual Scientific Meeting of JCS in which a cardiovascular surgeon served as Congress Chairperson. The main theme of this meeting was "Futurability: Pioneering the Future of Circulatory Medicine". The word, futurability, is a neologism of future ability, because we now have to contemplate what constitutes the essence of cardiovascular medicine, how it should develop as medicine for future generations, and how its ability should be displayed. The meeting was favored by splendid weather and the number of participants was recorded as being higher than 18,700. There were heated and profound discussions about the "futurability" of cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and heart team medical care as well, in every session. The meeting was successfully completed and we sincerely appreciate the great cooperation and support from all affiliates.

RESUMO

On November 11-15, the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2017 were held in Anaheim, California, for the first time in 16 years. The annual sessions attracted nearly 18,000 attendees, with a global presence from more than 100 countries, and featured 5 days of programming for cardiovascular basic scientists, clinicians, and researchers. As usual, activities of participants from Japan were prominent. From the exciting sessions, I report the topics and key presentations including the late-breaking clinical trials.

RESUMO

The 81stAnnual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society was held in Kanazawa, Japan, on March 17-19, 2017 under a miraculously clear sky. The frontlines of healthcare and medicine are dramatically changing. Thus, "Cardiovascular Medicine for Next Generation" was chosen as the main theme of this meeting. The program was constructed around major identified issues, including renewal of our understanding of basic cardiovascular medicine, translational research, and preventive molecular medicine, all of which are anticipated to transcend the medical field over the next generation. Despite the provincial location, 15,672 participants, including more than 400 from overseas countries, attended the 3-day meeting, and there were in-depth discussions in the various sessions. In particular, to our great pleasure, Her Imperial Highness Princess Takamado kindly attended the opening ceremony and extended congratulations to us. The meeting successfully completed and we sincerely appreciate the great cooperation and support from all affiliates.
