Whereas mammals are characterized by the presence of three middle ear ossicles, reptiles have only one, the columella (stapes). Nevertheless, there is a great diversity of columellar anatomy among sauropsids, especially in the unique and cartilaginous "extracolumella"-portion. Molecular studies revealed the "columella" of chicken and quails to be formed within the second pharyngeal arch, although conflicting evidence exists for the columellar footplate and distal parts of the columella in these birds. We studied columellar development in four turtles, one lizard, and one caiman species and argue, using early blastematous stages, that, distally, the so-called "extracolumella" in turtles is mainly of quadrate, that is, first pharyngeal arch origin. Differently, the dorsal aspect of the "extracolumella" of the lizard and a part of the "dorsal columella process" of the caiman are likely quadrate-derived. This indicates only a partial homology of the distal columellar compartments among reptiles. Moreover, we observed in most species that, at early stages, the footplate differentiates from the otic capsule, which confirms widespread experimental findings of mesodermal cells contributing to the proximal part of the columella. We provide a hypothetical framework for the changes in the columella and quadrate morphology in reptilian evolution. Originally, as evidenced by the fossil record, the columella served as a stabilizing brace between the quadrate and braincase. Associated with changes in the feeding mode of late Permian taxa, the quadrate was integrated along the stress flows from biting, and in early development part of the quadrate differentiated to differently contribute to the distal part of the "columella-complex," which now contacts the tympanic membrane. In addition, part of the original otic capsule contributes to the footplate of the mobile columella, providing a connection with the inner ear.

The hot quadrate sign is defined as an intense arterial enhancement in the hepatic quadrate lobe, most frequently encountered on CT angiograms in patients with central venous occlusion. It has also been described as focal uptake on technetium-99m (Tc99m) sulfur colloid scans. We present an unusual case of focal uptake in the hepatic quadrate lobe on a ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) scan, corresponding to the hot quadrate sign in a 42-year-old patient with chronic kidney disease and central venous occlusion.

Background This study aimed to identify morphological variations, conduct morphometry of the liver, and present its clinical implications. Methodology The study was conducted on 35 preserved cadaveric livers without macroscopic abnormalities. Morphological features such as shape and size were studied and variations such as the absence of lobe, accessory fissures, or accessory lobes were noted in all specimens. Results The caudate lobe was absent in one liver, and the quadrate lobe was absent in six livers. Moreover, seven livers had accessory fissures, and accessory lobes were seen in six livers. The left lobe with a lingular process was seen in three livers, and diaphragmatic grooves were present in seven livers. Conclusions The present research is helpful to radiologists, surgeons, and anatomists as it demonstrates the different morphological variations in the liver.

In birds, the quadrate connects the mandible and skull, and plays an important role in cranial kinesis. Avian quadrate morphology may therefore be assumed to have been influenced by selective pressures related to feeding ecology, yet large-scale variation in quadrate morphology and its potential relationship with ecology have never been quantitatively investigated. Here, we used geometric morphometrics and phylogenetic comparative methods to quantify morphological variation of the quadrate and its relationship with key ecological features across a wide phylogenetic sample. We found non-significant associations between quadrate shape and feeding ecology across different scales of phylogenetic comparison; indeed, allometry and phylogeny exhibit stronger relationships with quadrate shape than ecological features. We show that similar quadrate shapes are associated with widely varying dietary ecologies (one-to-many mapping), while divergent quadrate shapes are associated with similar dietary ecologies (many-to-one mapping). Moreover, we show that the avian quadrate evolves as an integrated unit and exhibits strong associations with the morphologies of neighbouring bones. Our results collectively illustrate that quadrate shape has evolved jointly with other elements of the avian kinetic system, with the major crown bird lineages exploring alternative quadrate morphologies, highlighting the potential diagnostic value of quadrate morphology in investigations of bird systematics.

We propose a new concept image sensor suitable for viewing and sensing applications. This is a report of a CMOS image sensor with a pixel architecture consisting of a 1.5 µm pixel with four-floating-diffusions-shared pixel structures and a 3.0 µm pixel with an in-pixel capacitor. These pixels are four small quadrate pixels and one big square pixel, also called quadrate-square pixels. They are arranged in a staggered pitch array. The 1.5 µm pixel pitch allows for a resolution high enough to recognize distant road signs. The 3 µm pixel with intra-pixel capacitance provides two types of signal outputs: a low-noise signal with high conversion efficiency and a highly saturated signal output, resulting in a high dynamic range (HDR). Two types of signals with long exposure times are read out from the vertical pixel, and four types of signals are read out from the horizontal pixel. In addition, two signals with short exposure times are read out again from the square pixel. A total of eight different signals are read out. This allows two rows to be read out simultaneously while reducing motion blur. This architecture achieves both an HDR of 106 dB and LED flicker mitigation (LFM), as well as being motion-artifact-free and motion-blur-less. As a result, moving subjects can be accurately recognized and detected with good color reproducibility in any lighting environment. This allows a single sensor to deliver the performance required for viewing and sensing applications.

In birds and other reptiles, the quadrate acts as a hinge between the lower jaw and the skull and plays an important role in avian cranial kinesis. Though previous studies have qualitatively described substantial variation in quadrate morphology among birds, none have attempted to quantify evolutionary changes in quadrate shape. Here, we investigate geometric evolution of the quadrate in Galloanserae, a major clade of extant birds uniting chicken-like (Galliformes) and duck-like (Anseriformes) fowl. We quantified morphological variation in the quadrate across 50 extant galloanseran species covering all major extant subclades using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics, and performed ancestral shape reconstructions in the context of an up-to-date neornithine phylogeny. We find that our results based only on extant quadrates may overlook plesiomorphic features captured by fossil taxa, resulting in an ancestral state reconstruction for Galloanserae that is seemingly an approximation of the average shape of the extant data set. By contrast, analyses incorporating early fossil galloanseran quadrates (from taxa such as Asteriornis, Presbyornis, and Conflicto) result in ancestral geometric reconstructions more similar to the morphology of extant galliforms, indicating that the quadrate of the last common ancestor of galloanserans may have been more morphologically and functionally similar to those of extant galliforms than to extant anseriforms. These results generally corroborate previous inferences of galloanseran quadrate plesiomorphies and identify several additional plesiomorphic features of the galloanseran quadrate for the first time. Our results illustrate the importance of incorporating fossil taxa into ancestral shape reconstructions and help elucidate important aspects of the morphology and function of the avian feeding apparatus early in crown bird evolutionary history.

Introduction With increasing dependence on laparoscopic procedures, precise knowledge of external variations of the liver is essential for good surgical and interventional outcomes, preventing imaging misdiagnosis, and curtailing complications. The present study aims to evaluate the gross anatomical variations of the liver. Materials and Methods The 40 adult cadaveric livers of age 60-80 years were removed during the routine dissection for undergraduate medical students and examined for morphological variations in the form of size, shape, and fissures. Results Accessory fissures were observed on the caudate lobe (CL) in 23 (57.5%), on the quadrate lobe (QL) in seven (17.5%), on the right lobe (RL) in 29 (72.5%), and on the left lobe (LL) in 12 (30%) specimens. Netter's Type 2, Type 4, Type 5, Type 6, and Type 7 liver were observed in four (10%), seven (17.5%), one (2.5%), three (7.5%), and three (7.5%) specimens respectively. The most common shapes of the CL and QL were rectangular in 16 (40%) and quadrangular in 10 (25%) specimens respectively. Pons hepatis were seen in three (7.5%) specimens. The mean length (cm) of RL and LL were 17.75 ±3.09 and 16.9±3.69 respectively, whereas the mean transverse diameter (TD) (cm) of RL and LL were 7.98±1.20 and 7.85±1.58 respectively. The mean length and TD (cm) of CL were 5.62±1.67 and 2.48±1.00 respectively. The mean length and TD (cm) of the QL were 6.00±1.51 and 2.81±0.83 respectively. Conclusion Precise knowledge of these variations would be helpful for surgeons in planning and performing surgical procedures and for anatomists.

The Rufous treepie (Dendrocitta vagabunda) belongs to family corvidae, order Passeriformes which includes about 100 species. The current study was conducted to gather information about the Population distribution and habitat analysis of D. vagabunda at District Abbottabad, Pakistan. The data were collected on monthly basis both morning and evening times (2018-2019). The "Point count Method" was used for population estimation and "Quadrates Method" for habitat analysis of study area. The result shows an average month-wise population density of D. vagabunda was maximum at Jhangra 0.14±0.039/ha, whereas minimum at Havelian 0.11±0.022/ha. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) among monthly population densities of D. vagabunda, however, a significant difference (p<0.05) was found between morning and evening times population of the specie. The present study revealed that importance value index (IVI) of plants species at Sherwan, Bakot, Havelian, Langra and Jhangra were 59.6±12.6, 50.1±6.9, 53.4±6.3, 66.8±10 and 60.1±7.7. Likewise, the frequency of shrubs at Sherwan, Bakot, Havelian, Langra and Jhangra were 33.3±4.2, 45±9.4, 46.7±8.2, 55.6±22.2 and 37.5±8.5. Similarly, the frequency of herbs at Sherwan, Bakot, Havelian, Langra and Jhangra were 40.4±6.0, 37.5±5.6, 53.3±7.4, 48.5±5.2 and 46.9±7.4 respectively. Our results show the study area as suitable habitat for D. vagabunda.

Social insects present a great diversity of exocrine glands, which are linked to fundamental roles of social life, and their morphological characterization represents the first step toward the knowledge of their function. We here describe the exocrine glands present in the sting apparatus of queens and workers of the wasp Protopolybia exigua. Histological analysis of serial sections under light microscopy revealed a glandular epithelium in the spiracular plate, the quadrate plate, and the gonostyli, while the last two in addition also contain clusters of class-3 cells. A big cluster of class-3 cells was also found in the oblong plate of some workers and queens. These findings reveal that a variety of glands, in addition to the common venom gland and Dufour gland, are present in association with the sting apparatus, of which three glands are novel reports for the exocrine repertoire of social insects. The position of the glands suggests a role in lubrication to provide mobility of the sting and venom ejection and/or participation in alarm behavior, while a function related to reproduction is also possible. The peculiar characteristics displayed by swarm-founding wasps are linked with exocrine gland secretions, making their investigation in Epiponini wasps a vast and interesting field.

PURPOSE: Liver is divided into four anatomical lobes presenting minor fissures and invisible major fissures. The prevalence of Accessory Fissures in liver ranges widely from 6 to 94%. The morphometric analysis of individual lobes is also scarce in literature. There have been instances where the surgeon has experienced some of these variations as a surprise during surgery as the existing data on the surface variations of liver is still contradictory. A sound knowledge of these variations would aid the surgeons and radiologists to circumvent the misdiagnosis and complications during surgeries. METHODS: The study was conducted in 93 cadaveric livers. Minor liver fissures, Accessory fissures and lobes were noted and measured. The livers were classified according to the Netter's classification. The morphology of caudate and quadrate lobes was studied. Any other variations in the appearance of groove for Inferior vena cava, gall bladder and its fossa were also studied. The results are tabulated. RESULTS: The study revealed several variations in the morphological features of liver. Accessory fissures were noted in 51.61% of livers, distributed on various liver surfaces. Accessory lobes were noted in 27.9%. Pons hepatis was present in 22.5%. Gall bladder variations that were noted include the Hartmann's pouch (n = 14; 15.05%) and the Phrygian cap (n = 2; 2.15%). 65.6% livers (n = 61) had the sulcus of the caudate process or fissure of Gans or Rouviere sulcus which is a normal fissure present in majority of normal healthy livers. CONCLUSION: The current study provides a complete understanding and a thorough knowledge of surface morphological variations in liver. We hope that this will be greatly helpful for surgeons and radiologists to avoid possible errors in interpretations, to plan appropriately and assist during liver surgeries and to do radiological interventions.

While the morphology and evolution of the quadrate among early birds and through the evolutionary origin of birds is not well known, we add to knowledge about that past diversity through description of the morphology of the quadrate in the unusually elongate skull of the Cretaceous enantiornithine bird Longipteryx chaoyangensis. The lateral and caudal surfaces of the quadrate are well exposed in two specimens revealing morphologies typical of early birds and their dinosaurian close relatives like a small otic head and two mandibular condyles. However, both skeletons exhibit quadrates with a unique, enlarged lateral crest that has not been previously described among Mesozoic birds. It is possible that the rostral surface of this lateral expansion served as the origination site for enlarged jaw musculature in a manner similar to the enlarged subcapitular tubercle in extant galloanserine birds. The caudally concave surface of the quadrate likely reflects some aspect of cranial pneumaticity, with its shape and position reminiscent of quadrates found in close non-avialan maniraptoran relatives. It is possible that this lateral crest has a wider distribution among enantiornithines and other early birds and that the crest has been misidentified as the orbital process in some more damaged specimens. In addition, the enlarged lateral mandibular condyle (relative to the medial condyle) differs from the condition typically reported among enantiornithines and could indicate a difference in jaw function or mechanics in this bird with an elongated rostrum, or simply misinterpretations of morphology. Further examination of the quadrate in temporally early and phylogenetically stemward birds, along with their close outgroups, could greatly impact the study of several different aspects of bird biology including assessment of phylogenetic relationships, interpretation of the function and kinematics of the skull, reconstruction of foraging paleoecology, and evolution of skull morphological diversity among Mesozoic birds.

Protrusion of the oral jaws is a key morphological innovation that enhances feeding performance in fishes. The mechanisms of protrusion and the basis of variation in its magnitude are well studied, but little attention has been paid to the functional morphology of protrusion directionality, despite wide variation among teleost species from slightly dorsal to strongly ventral. Ponyfishes (Leiognathidae) comprise a group of 52 species that exhibit striking diversity in the directionality of jaw protrusion, providing a promising system for exploring its underlying basis in a single clade. We examined the anatomical basis of protrusion directionality by measuring eight traits associated with the size and positioning of oral jaw bones. Measurements were made on cleared and stained specimens of 20 ponyfish species, representing every major lineage within the family. Species fell into three nonoverlapping clusters with respect to directionality including dorsal, rostral, and ventral protruders. A key correlate of protrusion direction is the anterior-posterior position of the articular-quadrate jaw joint. As the joint position moves from a posterior to a more anterior location, the orientation of the relaxed mandible rotates from an almost horizontal resting position to an upright vertical posture. Abduction of the mandible from the horizontal position results in ventrally directed protrusion, while the more upright mandible rotates to a position that maintains dorsal orientation. The resting orientation of the premaxilla and maxilla, thus, vary consistently with protrusion direction. Mouth size, represented by length of the mandible and maxilla, is a second major axis of variation in ponyfishes that is independent of variation in protrusion directionality.

BACKGROUND: Radial head instability continues to be a challenge in the management of anterior Monteggia injuries; however, there is a paucity of literature on the factors that contribute to this instability. The aim of this biomechanical investigation was to examine the effects of ulnar angulation and soft tissue insufficiency on radial head stability in anterior Monteggia injuries. METHODS: Six cadaveric arms were mounted in an elbow motion simulator. Radial head translation was measured during simulated active elbow flexion with the forearm supinated. After testing the elbows in the intact state, the ulna was osteotomized and tested at 0°, 10°, 20°, and 30° of extension angulation. To examine the effect of soft tissue insufficiency, the anterior radiocapitellar joint capsule, annular ligament, quadrate ligament, and the proximal and middle interosseous membrane (IOM) were sequentially sectioned. RESULTS: There was a significant increase in anterior radial head translation with greater ulnar extension angulation. Sequential soft tissue sectioning also significantly increased anterior radial head translation. There was no increase in radial head translation with isolated sectioning of the anterior radiocapitellar joint capsule. Additional sectioning of the annular ligament and quadrate ligament slightly increased anterior radial head translation but did not reach statistical significance. Subsequent sectioning of the proximal and middle IOM resulted in significant increases in anterior radial head translation. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrates that progressive ulnar extension angulation results in an incremental increase in anterior radial head translation in anterior Monteggia injuries. Moreover, increasing magnitudes of soft tissue disruption result in greater anterior radial head instability.

We examined the morphological diversity of the quadrate bone in squamate reptiles (i.e. lizards, snakes, amphisbaenians). The quadrate is the principal splanchnocranial element involved in suspending the lower jaw from the skull, and its shape is of particular interest because it is potentially affected by several factors, such as phylogenetic history, allometry, ecology, skull kinesis and hearing capabilities (e.g. presence or absence of a tympanic ear). Due to its complexity, the quadrate bone is also considered one of the most diagnostic elements in fragmentary fossil taxa. We describe quadrates from 38 species spread across all major squamate clades, using qualitative and quantitative (e.g. geometric morphometrics) methods. We test for possible correlations between shape variation and factors such as phylogeny, size, ecology and presence/absence of a tympanum. Our results show that the shape of the quadrate is highly evolutionarily plastic, with very little of the diversity explained by phylogenetic history. Size variation (allometric scaling) is similarly unable to explain much shape diversity in the squamate quadrate. Ecology (terrestrial/fossorial/aquatic) and presence of a tympanic ear are more significant, but together explain only about 20% of the diversity observed. Other unexplored and more analytically complex factors, such as skull biomechanics, likely play additional major roles in shaping the quadrates of lizards and snakes.

INTRODUCTION: The gall bladder (GB) is a storage reservoir that allows bile acids to be delivered in a high concentration. The quadrate (QL) and caudate lobes (CL) are functional parts of the liver. The knowledge of the gross and developmental anatomy of GB and CL and QL of liver is important for surgeons who operate in this region. The present study was conducted to examine the developmental sequence and morphometry of the GB, and CL and QL of liver. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present cross sectional study the parameters measured were length of GB from the neck to the lowest point on the fundus, and the length and width of QL and CL measured at the midpoint. The data was analyzed statistically and the various parameters were correlated using Pearson's correlation. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant correlation indicating that the growth of GB, QL and CL was proportional to the gestational age (GA). The variations in the morphology of the GB were also noted. In two specimens it was found that the GB was embedded partially in the substance of the liver and failed to reach the inferior border of the liver. CONCLUSION: The regression equations calculated in the study provide a tool to estimate the lengths of GB, QL and CL prenatally.

Abstract The developmental investigation of sound transmitting apparatus is important in understanding the ontogenetic processes behind morphological diversity. The development of sound conducting apparatus was studied in Montpellier snake; Malpolon monspessulanus at 6.5, 7.2, 8.3 and 9.3 cm total body lengths using light microscopy study. The columella auris firstly appeared as undifferentiated rod shape mesenchymal cells. As the growth proceeded, it chondrified and differentiates into two main parts. In addition, the viscerocranium components which participate in formation of sound transmitting apparatus undergo critical organization. In more advanced stages, procartilagenous stylohyal chondrified and fuse with the well organized quadrate. These data considered as a base for functional and molecular mechanisms of sound transmitting apparatus studies and identification of diseases that may infect them.


Resumo A investigação do desenvolvimento de equipamentos de transmissão de som é importante na compreensão dos processos ontogenéticos atrás diversidade morfológica. O desenvolvimento de aparelhos de som realização foi estudada em Montpellier cobra; Monspessulanus Malpolon em 6.5, 7.2, 8.3 e 9.3 cm corporal total utilizando comprimentos de estudo de microscopia de luz. O auris columelar em primeiro lugar apareceu como células mesenquimais forma haste indiferenciada. Como o crescimento passou, ele chondrified e diferencia em duas partes principais. Além disso, os componentes viscerocrânio que participam na formação do aparelho de transmissão de som submeter a organização crítico. Em estágios mais avançados, stylohyal procartilagenous chondrified e se fundem com o quadrado bem organizado. Estes dados considerados como uma base para os mecanismos funcionais e estudos moleculares do aparelho de transmissão de som e identificação de doenças que podem infectar-los.

The mammalian middle ear represents one of the most fundamental features defining this class of vertebrates. However, the origin and the developmental process of the incus in the human remains controversial. The present study seeks to demonstrate all the steps of development and integration of the incus within the middle ear. We examined histological sections of 55 human embryos and fetuses at 6 to 13 weeks of development. At 6 weeks of development (16 Carnegie Stage), the incus anlage was found at the cranial end of the first pharyngeal arch. At this stage, each of the three anlagen of the ossicles in the middle ear were independent in different locations. At Carnegie Stage 17 a homogeneous interzone clearly defined the incus and malleus anlagen. The cranial end of the incus was located very close to the otic capsule. At 7 and 8 weeks was characterized by the short limb of the incus connecting with the otic capsule. At 9 weeks was characterized by an initial disconnection of the incus from the otic capsule. At 13 weeks, a cavity appeared between the otic capsule and incus. Our results provide significant evidence that the human incus developed from the first pharyngeal arch but independently from Meckel's cartilage. Also, during development, the incus was connected with the otic capsule, and then it was detached definitively. The development of the incus in humans provides evidence that this ossicle is homologous to the quadrate. Anat Rec, 2018. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

BACKGROUND: Isolated radial head dislocation is a rare injury with an unclear pathomechanism, and the treatment is controversial. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the biomechanical contributions of the annular ligament, quadrate ligament, interosseous membrane, and annular ligament reconstructions to proximal radioulnar joint stability. METHODS: Five fresh frozen cadaveric upper extremities were amputated above the elbow and solidly fixed on a customized jig. Radial head dislocation was reproduced by sequential sectioning of ligamentous structures and passive mobility testing. Radial head displacement during mobility testing was measured with an electromagnetic tracking device in three forearm rotation positions. The data were compared among different sectioning stages and between two types of simulated ligamentous reconstruction. RESULTS: Lateral displacement of the radial head significantly increased in the neutral forearm rotation after annular ligament sectioning (46 ± 10%, p < 0.05). After quadrate ligament sectioning, we found significant posterior (67 ± 36%, p < 0.05) and lateral (74 ± 24%, p < 0.01) displacement in neutral forearm rotation and pronation. Significant radial head displacement was found in all directions and in all forearm positions after sequential sectioning of the proximal half of the interosseous membrane. Anatomical annular ligament reconstruction stabilized the proximal radioulnar joint except for anterior laxity in neutral forearm rotation (15 ± 6%, p < 0.05). The radial head with Bell Tawse procedure was significantly displaced in all directions. CONCLUSION: The direction of radial head instability varied depending on the degree of soft tissue sectioning and specific forearm rotation. Anterior radial head dislocation may involve more severe ligament damage than other types of dislocation. Anatomical annular ligament reconstruction provided multidirectional radial head stability.
