Although most petroleum oil species can be identified by their fluorescence spectra, overlapping fluorescence spectra make identification difficult. This study aims to address the issue that fluorescence spectroscopy is ineffective in identifying overlapping oil species. In this study, an equivalent model of overlapping oil species with fluorescence spectra was established. The linear discriminant analysis (LDA)-assisted machine learning (ML) algorithms K nearest neighbor (KNN), decision tree (DT), and random forest (RF) improved the identification of fluorescent spectrally overlapping oil species for diesel-lubricant oils. The identification accuracies of two-dimensional convolutional neural network (2DCNN), LDA combined with the ML algorithms effectively all 100 %. Furthermore, Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) algorithm, Support Vector Regression (SVR) algorithm, DT regression algorithm, and RF regression algorithm were also used to identify the lubricant concentration in diesel-lubricant oils. The coefficient of determination of the DT was 1, and the root-mean-square error was 0, which identified the concentration of lubricant oils in them accurately and without error.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides), a traditional Tibetan medicinal herb, exhibits protective effects against cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Although Sea buckthorn extract (SBE) has been confirmed to alleviate airway inflammation in mice, its therapeutic effect and underlying mechanism on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) requires further clarification. AIM OF THE STUDY: To elucidate the alleviative effect and molecular mechanism of SBE on lipopolysaccharides (LPS)/porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE)-induced COPD by blocking ferroptosis. METHODS: The anti-ferroptotic effects of SBE were evaluated in human BEAS-2B bronchial epithelial cells using CCK8, RT-qPCR, western blotting, and transmission electron microscopy. Transwell was employed to detect chemotaxis of neutrophils. COPD model was induced by intranasally administration of LPS/PPE in mice and measured by alterations of histopathology, inflammation, and ferroptosis. RNA-sequencing, western blotting, antioxidant examination, flow cytometry, DARTS, CETSA, and molecular docking were then used to investigate its anti-ferroptotic mechanisms. RESULTS: In vitro, SBE not only suppressed erastin- or RSL3-induced ferroptosis by suppressing lipid peroxides (LPOs) production and glutathione (GSH) depletion, but also suppressed ferroptosis-induced chemotactic migration of neutrophils via reducing mRNA expression of chemokines. In vivo, SBE ameliorated LPS/PPE-induced COPD phenotypes, and inhibited the generation of LPOs, cytokines, and chemokines. RNA-sequencing showed that p53 pathway and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) pathway were implicated in SBE-mediated anti-ferroptotic action. SBE repressed erastin- or LPS/PPE-induced overactivation of p53 and MAPK pathway, thereby decreasing expression of diamine acetyltransferase 1 (SAT1) and arachidonate 15-lipoxygenase (ALOX15), and increasing expression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11). Mechanistically, erastin-induced elevation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was reduced by SBE through directly scavenging free radicals, thereby contributing to its inhibition of p53 and MAPK pathways. CETSA, DARTS, and molecular docking further showed that ROS-generating enzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase 4 (NOX4) may be the target of SBE. Overexpression of NOX4 partially impaired the anti-ferroptotic activity of SBE. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrated that SBE mitigated COPD by suppressing p53 and MAPK pro-ferroptosis pathways via directly scavenging ROS and blocking NOX4. These findings also supported the clinical application of Sea buckthorn in COPD therapy.

The ocean serves as a repository for various types of artificial nanoparticles. Nanoplastics (NPs) and nano zinc oxide (nZnO), which are frequently employed in personal care products and food packaging materials, are likely simultaneously released and eventually into the ocean with surface runoff. Therefore, their mutual influence and shared destiny in marine environment cannot be ignored. This study examined how nanomaterials interacted and transported through sea sand in various salinity conditions. Results showed that NPs remained dispersed in brine, while nZnO formed homoaggregates. In seawater of 35 practical salinity units (PSU), nZnO formed heteroaggregates with NPs, inhibiting NPs mobility and decreasing the recovered mass percentage (Meff) from 24.52% to 12.65%. In 3.5 PSU brackish water, nZnO did not significantly aggregate with NPs, and thus barely affected their mobility. However, NPs greatly enhanced nZnO transport with Meff increasing from 14.20% to 25.08%, attributed to the carrier effect of higher mobility NPs. Cotransport from brackish water to seawater was simulated in salinity change experiments and revealed a critical salinity threshold of 10.4 PSU, below which the mobility of NPs was not affected by coexisting nZnO and above which nZnO strongly inhibited NP transport. This study highlights the importance of considering the mutual influence and shared destiny of artificial nanoparticles in the marine environment and how their interaction and cotransport are dependent on changes in seawater salinity.

Introduction: Hydrothermal vents, rich in heavy metals, provided a unique niche for heavy metal resistant microbes. However, knowledge about copper resistant microbes in deep sea hydrothermal vents is still limited. Methods: The copper-resistant bacteria were isolated from deep-sea hydrothermal vent samples and conducted thorough physical, phylogenetic, and genomic analyses to elucidate their copper resistance capability and related genes. Results: Twelve highly copper-resistant bacteria (up to 6-10 mM) were isolated from deep sea hydrothermal fields They were affiliated with the Pseudoalteromonas (4), Marinobacter (3), Halomonas (2), Psychrobacter (1), and Pseudomonas (1) genus in the α-Proteobacteria, and the Sphingomonas (1) genus in the ß-Proteobacteria. The presence of copper in the medium obviously induced the amount of polysaccharides and proteins in the crude extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by Halomonas sp. CuT 3-1, Pseudoalteromonas sp. CuT 4-3 and Marinobacter metalliresistant CuT 6, which could absorb 40 to 50 mg•g-1 copper. We further described a novel species, Marinobacter metalliresistant sp. nov. CuT 6T, which exhibited a higher copper resistance and encoded more heavy metal resistance-related genes than other Marinobacter species. Discussion: It revealed that the copper resistance capability exhibited by these strains in hydrothermal fields is likely attributed to the production of exopolymeric substances, such as polysaccharides and proteins, as well as active transport or efflux mechanisms for heavy metals.

Benzothiazoles (BTHs), benzotriazoles (BTRs), and benzotriazole ultraviolet absorbers (BUVs) have garnered significant attention owing to their persistent nature in the environment and adverse impacts on aquatic organisms. However, there remains a dearth of investigations and studies conducted in tropical marine environments. In this study, we undertook the inaugural distributional survey and ecotoxicological relevance of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in seawater and sediments of the western South China Sea (WSCS). Elevated concentrations of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in the seawater and suspended particulate matter (SPM) were primarily observed in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and the western region of the WSCS, attributed to terrestrial runoff and hydrodynamic processes. Moreover, the transport of these compounds at the seawater-SPM interface was influenced by both the intrinsic properties of the contaminants and temperature variations. Spatially, concentrations of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in surface sediments exhibited a diminishing trend with increasing distance from the coast to offshore areas, reflecting notable anthropogenic impacts. Concentration profiles of these compounds in sediment cores displayed a bottom-up increasing trend, with total organic carbon (TOC) identified as the primary determinant governing their accumulation within sediment cores in the WSCS. Terrestrial runoff inputs and atmospheric deposition as major contributors to the occurrence of BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in the WSCS. Simultaneously, the study underscores the non-negligible moderate mixture risk quotient associated with BTHs, BTRs, and BUVs in the sediments.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease for which there is currently no efficacious therapeutic drug with fewer side effects. Therefore, the development of approaches for the prevention of UC from natural food sources is urgently needed. In this study, mice were pre-fed with sea cucumber peptides prior to dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) induction. Results showed that sea cucumber peptides decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-4 and IL-10) levels and remissions of main clinic symptoms in a dose-dependent manner. The composition of peptides was identified, and the anti-inflammatory molecular mechanism was evaluated by silico prediction. The molecular weight of the peptides was 243-1800 Da and composed of 3-18 amino acid residues. Online activity assessment and molecular docking prediction revealed that tripeptides of FGI, FLI, FLL, GFL, GFM, IGF and LDF exhibited strong anti-inflammatory activity. Particularly, LDF showed the highest potency, with a binding energy of -5.37 kJ/mol. Network pharmacology analysis of UC related diseases indicated that active peptides interact with colitis disease targets, primarily proto-oncogene tyrosine-protein kinase Src (SRC), E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase XIAP (XIAP) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE). The results suggest that sea cucumber peptides have potential as a novel nutraceutical option for colitis relief.

Sea level rise (SLR) poses a significant threat to coastal regions worldwide, particularly affecting over 60 million people living below 10 m above sea level along the African coast. This study analyzes the spatio-temporal trends of sea level anomaly (SLA) and its components (thermosteric, halosteric and ocean mass) in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic Ocean (ETAO) from 1993 to 2022. The SLA trend for the ETAO, derived from satellite altimetry, is 3.52 ± 0.47 mm/year, similar to the global average of 3.56 ± 0.67 mm/year. Of the three upwelling regions, the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) shows the highest regional trend of 3.42 ± 0.12 mm/year. Using the ARMORD3D dataset, a positive thermosteric sea level trend of 0.88 ± 0.04 mm/year is observed, particularly in the equatorial and southern Atlantic regions. The steric component drives the interannual SLA variability, while the ocean mass component dominates the long-term trends, as confirmed by the GRACE and GRACE-FO missions for 2002-2022. For those two decades, the total SLR from altimetry amounts to 3.80 ± 0.8 mm/year, whilst the steric component is reduced to only 0.19 ± 0.05 mm/year, leaving a residual increase in the ETAO of 3.69 ± 0.5 mm/year. The independent mass change from GRACE amounts to 2.78 ± 0.6 mm/year for this region, which just closes the sea level budget within present uncertainty levels. Spatial analysis of the steric components indicates a warming along the equatorial African coast including the GoG and a freshening near Angola. Strong correlations with regional climate factors, particularly the Tropical South Atlantic Index, highlight the influence of persistent climate modes. These findings underscore the urgent need for mitigation and adaptation strategies to SLR in the ETAO, especially for densely populated coastal communities.

Grouper fish are among the most important components of the fisheries of many countries because they are found in warm water throughout the world. There are 15 genera and 159 species known worldwide; 8 genera and 66 species are exclusively found in the western Indian Ocean, Red Sea, and Arabian Gulf. The Summan grouper, Epinephelus summana, constitutes a considerable portion of these fisheries; therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the reproductive strategy of this important fish species. The fish samples were collected monthly for one year (from November 2020 to October 2021), and 217 fish were collected from the Red Sea of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The sex ratio, sexual maturation process, and spawning season were analyzed. Across all samples, landing consisted of 36.2 ± 4.7 % males, 64.0 ± 5.0 % females, and 3.4 ± 1.8 % transitional-stage fish, with an overall significantly different male-to-female sex ratio of 1:3.3. Furthermore, males were larger than females. The maturation index (MI), gonadosomatic index (GSI), and ovarian maturation rate (OMR) values fluctuated throughout the year, indicating that E. summana has extended spawning and spawns in batches during different months of the year. However, April to May is the main spawning season, with the highest female GSI recorded. Based on the microscopic histological examination of gonads, the maturation process can be classified into five stages in both males and females. In conclusion, this fish species has a complex reproductive biology. It undergoes sexual transformation and protogynous hermaphroditism, during which individuals mature first as female and then change sex to male. The obtained data is essential for successful fishery stock conservation, management, and aquaculture development.

Sea cucumbers, marine benthic invertebrates, play crucial roles in maintaining the stability of marine ecosystems and hold key evolutionary positions. However, information regarding their genomes remains limited. Here, we conducted genome survey analyses on seven species from four orders. Results indicated that Colochirus anceps, Colochirus quadrangularis, and Pseudocolochirus violaceus within the order Dendrochirotida have significantly larger genomes (2238-3754 Mbp) compared to conventional sea cucumber genomes, accompanied by a very high proportion of repeat sequences (69.39-72.52 %). While Holothuria edulis and Holothuria atra exhibited similar genome sizes comparable to those of other species within the order Holothuriida, heterozygosity and repeat content varied among all the six species in this order. The representative species Apostichopus californicus of the order Synallactida possesses the smallest genome size (573.45Mbp) within its order, but its heterozygosity (2.24 %) is significantly higher than that of other species. The representative species Synapta maculata of the order Apodida exhibited a normal genome size (900.97 Mbp), lower proportion of repeat sequences (42.19 %), and lower heterozygosity (0.84 %), making it the species with the least challenges for genome sequencing and assembly in the future among all surveyed species. Subsequently, we compiled genomic information from a total of 19 sea cucumber genomes, both newly sequenced and previously reported, revealing a significant linear relationship (P = 0.0001) between genome size and the proportion of repeat sequences in sea cucumbers. Additionally, phylogenetic and comparative analysis of mitochondrial genomes among them indicated extensive rearrangements within the order Apodida, leading to significant discrepancies between mitochondrial and nuclear genome phylogenies.

With sea-level rise, flooding in coastal communities is now common during the highest high tides. Floods also occur at normal tidal levels when rainfall overcomes stormwater infrastructure that is partially submerged by tides. Data describing this type of compound flooding is scarce and, therefore, it is unclear how often these floods occur and the extent to which non-tidal factors contribute to flooding. We combine measurements of flooding on roads and within storm drains with a numerical model to examine processes that contribute to flooding in Carolina Beach, NC, USA - a community that chronically floods outside of extreme storms despite flood mitigation infrastructure to combat tidal flooding. Of the 43 non-storm floods we measured during a year-long study period, one-third were unexpected based on the tidal threshold used by the community for flood monitoring. We introduce a novel model coupling between an ocean-scale hydrodynamic model (ADCIRC) and a community-scale surface water and pipe flow model (3Di) to quantify contributions from multiple flood drivers. Accounting for the compounding effects of tides, wind, and rain increases flood water levels by up to 0.4 m compared to simulations that include only tides. Setup from sustained (non-storm) regional winds causes deeper, longer, more extensive flooding during the highest high tides and can cause floods on days when flooding would not have occurred due to tides alone. Rainfall also contributes to unexpected floods; because tides submerge stormwater outfalls on a daily basis, even minor rainstorms lead to flooding as runoff has nowhere to drain. As a particularly low-lying coastal community, Carolina Beach provides a glimpse into future challenges that coastal communities worldwide will face in predicting, preparing for, and adapting to increasingly frequent flooding from compounding tidal and non-tidal drivers atop sea-level rise.

Microplastic studies investigating concentrations in water are numerous, but the majority of microplastics settle and are retained in sediment, and higher concentrations are regularly reported in sediments. Thus, MPs accumulation may be more threatening to benthic fish living in sediments than to pelagic fish. The presence, abundance and diversity of microplastics were investigated by collecting samples from two pelagic, European anchovy, and horse mackerel and two benthic fish species, red mullet, and whiting that are popularly consumed in Giresun province of Türkiye, located on the southern coast of the Black Sea. Visual classification and chemical compositions of microplastics was performed using a light microscope and ATR-FTIR spectrophotometry, consecutively. The overall incidence and mean microplastics abundance in sampled fishes were 17 and 1.7 ± 0.18 MP fish-1, respectively. MPs were within the range of 0.026-5 mm in size. In most of the cases, the MP was black in color with 41%. With the rates of 56%, polypropylene was the predominant polymer type. The most dominant MP type was identified as fiber followed by fragments and pellets. The relationship between MP amounts in fish and Fulton condition factor was not strong enough to establish a cause-effect relationship.

A novel bacterial strain, designated DW002T, was isolated from the sea ice of Cape Evans, McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Cells of the strain were Gram-negative, obligate anaerobic, motile, non-flagellated, and short rod-shaped. The strain DW002T grew at 4-32 â„ƒ (optimum at 22-28 â„ƒ) and thrived best at pH 7.0, NaCl concentration of 2.5% (w/v). The predominant isoprenoid quinone of strain DW002T was menaquinone-7 (MK-7). The major fatty acids (> 10%) of DW002T were iso-C15:0, anteiso-C15:0 and iso-C17:1ω9c. The predominant polar lipids of strain DW002T contained two phosphatidylethanolamines, one unidentified glycolipid, one unidentified aminolipid and four unidentified lipids. The DNA G + C content of the strain DW002T was 34.8%. Strain DW002T encoded 237 carbohydrate-active enzymes. The strain DW002T had genes associated with dissimilatory nitrate reduction and assimilatory sulfate reduction metabolic pathways. Based on distinct physiological, chemotaxonomic, genome analysis and phylogenetic differences compared to other members of the phylogenetically related genera in the family Marinifilaceae, strain DW002T is proposed to represent a novel genus within the family. Therefore, the name Paralabilibaculum antarcticum gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DW002T (=KCTC 25274T=MCCC 1K06067T).

The number of Vibrio-related infections in humans, e.g., by Vibrio vulnificus, has increased along the coasts of the Baltic Sea. Due to climate change, vibriosis risk is expected to increase. It is, therefore, pertinent to design a strategy for mitigation of the vibriosis threat in the Baltic Sea area, but a prerequisite is to identify the environmental conditions promoting the occurrence of pathogenic Vibrio spp., like V. vulnificus. To address this, we sampled three coastal Baltic sites in Finland, Germany, and Denmark with salinities between 6 and 21 from May to October 2022. The absolute and relative abundances of Vibrio spp. and V. vulnificus in water were compared to environmental conditions, including the presence of the eelgrass Zostera marina, which has been suggested to reduce pathogenic Vibrio species abundance. In the water column, V. vulnificus only occurred at the German station between July and August at salinity 8.1-11.2. Temperature and phosphate (PO43-) were identified as the most influencing factors for Vibrio spp. and V. vulnificus. The accumulation of Vibrio spp. in the sediment and the co-occurrence with sediment bacteria in the water column indicate that sediment resuspension contributed to V. vulnificus abundance. Interestingly, V. vulnificus co-occurred with specific cyanobacteria taxa, as well as specific bacteria associated with cyanobacteria. Although we found no reduction in Vibrio spp. or V. vulnificus associated with eelgrass beds, our study underscores the importance of extended heatwaves and sediment resuspension, which may elevate the availability of PO43-, for Vibrio species levels at intermediate salinities in the Baltic Sea. IMPORTANCE: Elevated sea surface temperatures are increasing the prevalence of pathogenic Vibrio at higher latitudes. The recent increase in Vibrio-related wound infections and deaths along the Baltic coasts is, therefore, of serious health concern. We used culture-independent data generated from three Baltic coastal sites in Denmark, Germany, and Finland from May to October (2022), with a special focus on Vibrio vulnificus, and combined it with environmental data. Our temporal model shows that temperature, combined with sediment resuspension, drives the prevalence of V. vulnificus at intermediate salinities in the coastal Baltic Sea.

Both petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) from oil pollution and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) have great influences on the marine microbial community as carbon source factors. However, their combined effects and the specific influence patterns have been kept unclear. This study selected the northeastern South China Sea (NSCS), a typical oil contaminated area, and investigated the characteristics of oil-degrading microbiota in the seawaters by high-throughput sequencing and the relationships with PHCs and CDOM as well as other environmental factors. The results showed the oil pollution had induced the enrichment of oil-degrading bacteria and oil-degrading functional genes, resulting in the core function of oil-degrading microbiota for shaping the microbial community. The Mantel test indicated carbon source factors played the dominant role in shaping the oil-degrading microbiota, compared with geographical distance and other non­carbon source factors. The influence patterns and strength of PHCs and CDOM on oil-degrading microbiota were further comprehensively analyzed. PHCs played a driving role in the differentiation of oil-degrading microbiota, while CDOM played a stabilizing role for the community similarity. The constructed structural equation model confirmed their distinct influence patterns and also explored the mediating effects of bulk organic carbon. This work not only revealed the important impact of oil pollution on marine microbial communities, but also made people realize the self-regulation ability of the marine environment through the endogenous organic matter.

Amid ongoing global warming, intense dust storms continue to plague regions despite efforts to understand and mitigate their impacts. This study explores the connection between surface temperature (ST) and precipitation (PRE) in the Gobi Desert (GD) during February and their subsequent effects on March dust concentrations across northern East Asia. Our analysis reveals a clear pattern: higher February ST combined with lower PRE in GD correlates with increased dust levels in March, with ST effects predominantly in northern areas of dust sources compared to PRE. The warming of the ST in February facilitates surface thawing, and the concurrently reduced PRE decreases soil moisture in GD. These conditions both contribute to the loosening of the soil, thereby creating favorable lower boundary conditions for the onset of dust activities in the subsequent March. Atmospheric dynamics play a pivotal role in the changes of ST and PRE. The preceding ST warming is closely tied to the weakening of the East Asian winter monsoon. Furthermore, the Eurasia teleconnection (EU) pattern is identified as a key circulation factor driving the changes of February PRE in GD. Additionally, sea surface temperature anomalies in the Barents Sea and the North Atlantic appear to influence these atmospheric circulation changes, altering ST and PRE in GD, and consequently, impacting March dust dynamics in northern East Asia. This study provides crucial insights into the climatic precursors that drive dust storm activities, which are essential for improving the accuracy of dust storm forecasting.

Exposure and resulting tissue concentrations of various elements from natural and anthropogenic sources are influenced by multiple factors, such as geographic location, age, diet, and metabolic rate, that can influence wildlife health. Essential and non-essential elements were assessed in lanugo and whole blood collected in 2019 from 102 Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) pups from two rookeries from the western and central Aleutian Islands: Agattu (WAI, n = 54) and Ulak Islands (CAI, n = 48). Rookery, sex, dorsal standard length, and trophic ecology (ẟ15N, ẟ13C values) effects on element concentration were evaluated. Significant differences in element concentrations of lanugo were exhibited across rookeries (p < 0.05), except for zinc (Zn). For example, higher mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) concentrations were observed in WAI than CAI, while other elements were lower in WAI. Whole blood showed higher sulfur (S) and Se concentrations in CAI compared to WAI, while WAI had elevated strontium (Sr) and Hg concentrations relative to CAI. Trophic ecology significantly influenced most element concentrations, possibly due to regional variations in adult female feeding and food web dynamics. Interactions between elements were found in lanugo across both rookeries, with varying strengths. Whole blood displayed less pronounced yet consistent associations, with variable intensities. Essential elements sodium (Na), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) formed a distinct group whose interaction is crucial for nervous system function and muscle contraction. Another group comprised zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), phosphorous (P), S, and Se, which are known for indirectly interacting with enzyme function and metabolic pathways. Hg and Se formed a distinct group probably due to their known chemical interactions and physiological protective interactions.

Studies on dinoflagellate cysts in the Arabian Sea (AS) are limited to the coastal waters, but no information from the deeper depths. The dinoflagellate cyst assemblages in surface sediment samples (0-2 cm) from the deeper depths (up to ~ 4500 m) of central (oxygen minimum zone (OMZ)) and southeastern (oligotrophic) AS revealed that the relatively good numbers of cyst concentrations reach deeper depths of OMZ (3505 m) and oligotrophic (4368 m) regions, but the former harbored more cyst concentrations than the latter. The cyst concentration and species count (including HAB species) recorded here are lower compared to the eastern (EAS) and western (WAS) AS, but the autotrophic cyst dominance (74-83%) at deeper depths is in contrast with the heterotrophic dominance in coastal AS. Of the recorded 41 cyst species (belonging to 18 genera), four species (cyst of Cladopyxis sp., Operculodinium janduchenei, Stelladinium bifurcatum, and Protoperidinium monospinum) from the deepest part of oligotrophic AS form the first report. In contrast, Spiniferites and Lingulodinium cysts were common occurrences. Taxonomic comparison with literature revealed (i) the prevalence of more cosmopolitan species (32 species) which could be due to the prevalence of large and small-scale lateral transport of cysts in oligotrophic regions followed by OMZ and coastal regions, respectively, and (ii) very few region-specific species, i.e., cyst of Protoperidinium latissimum, Lejeunecysta sabrina, cyst of Protoperidinium denticulatum in EAS and Impagidinium patulum, and I. strialatum, in WAS. Interestingly, variability in the morphometry was evident between the coastal and open oceans in some cosmopolitan cysts, e.g., Operculodinium centrocarpum and Lingulodinium machaerophorum. These findings from the less studied pelagic regions will contribute to the growing knowledge of dinoflagellate cyst distribution patterns and highlight the significance of cyst taxa and morphology as potential ecological indicators for AS.

The mercury pollution status in the northwestern Sea of Okhotsk remains largely unexplored. In this study, hair samples were collected from 40 bearded seals harvested between August and October 2021 in the region. Total mercury (THg) concentrations in the samples exhibited a wide range from 137 to 1885 ng/g (median: 407 ng/g). While no significant differences in THg concentrations were found between male and female seals, distinctions were observed between young and potentially mature seals. Stable nitrogen isotope analysis indicated that juveniles and mature adults did not differ, although sample sizes were limiting. The higher THg concentrations in juveniles were attributed to variations in the seals' diets and/or variations in foraging locations during the juvenile stage which likely contribute to THg differences due to greater seasonal migration to offshore habitats. Notably, THg levels in bearded seals from the northwestern Sea of Okhotsk were lower in comparison to other pinniped species in the North Pacific. These findings, representing the first dataset for this pinniped species in the Russian segment of its habitat, contribute insights into mercury exposure in the Sea of Okhotsk mammalian population.

The marine algae Ulva spp. are commonly used as model biofouling organisms. As biofouling studies are primarily conducted using field-collected specimens, factors including species identity, seasonal availability, and physiological status can hinder the replicability of the results. To address these limitations, a protocol was developed for the on-demand laboratory culture and release of Ulva zoospores. The biofouling potential of laboratory-cultured and field-collected Ulva blades was compared using a waterjet. No significant differences were found between field and laboratory-cultured samples in either spore adhesion (before waterjet) or the proportion of spores retained after waterjet exposure. However, there was significant variability within each session type in pre- and post-waterjet exposures, indicating that spore adhesion and retention levels vary significantly among trial runs. In addition, all our laboratory cultures were Ulva Clade C (LPP complex). In contrast, our field samples contained a mix of Ulva Clade C, U. compressa clade I, and U. flexuosa Clade D. This protocol for on-demand production of Ulva spores can improve biofouling research approaches, enables comparison of results across laboratories and regions, and accelerate the development of anti-biofouling strategies.

A new gobiid species is described from ten specimens, 9.2 - 16.7 mm SL, collected from the Saudi Arabian Red Sea. The new species is most similar to Sueviotapyrios from the Gulf of Aqaba in the northern Red Sea. It differs from S.pyrios by having no large red spots on the dorsal and caudal fin elements, no elongate spines in the first dorsal fin, a shorter pelvic fin that does not reach the anus, branched pectoral fin rays, and a projecting lower jaw. The new species is further distinguished from all its congeners by a complete lack of cephalic sensory canals and pores. Specimens were found in small caves and overhangs at depths between 10 and 53 meters.
