RESUMO

Objective:To establish the normal values of subjective visual vertical (SVV) in different head deflection angles and analyze its test and retest reliability, in order to provide a reference for the clinical application of SVV in the evaluation of vestibular disorders. Methods:Thirty-one healthy young people were selected to wear VR glasses, and the SVV data were tested in five different head-tilt, namely, 0° in the upright head position, 45°in the left head position, 45° in the right head position, 90° in the left head position, and 90° in the right head position, and were re-tested 2 weeks later. Results:①The mean values of SVV at 5 different head-tilt angles of 0°, left 45°, right 45°, left 90°, and right 90° were -0.07±1.71, 4.30±5.39, -6.51±5.58, -3.76±7.42, and 0.40±8.02, respectively, The 95% confidence limits of SVV at 0°, left 45°, right 45°, left 90°, right 90°, and right 90° were (-3.42, 3.28), (-6.26, 14.86), (-17.45, 4.43), (-18.30, 10.78), and(-15.32, 16.12), respectively; ②The absolute values of SVV at 4 different head-tilt angles of left 45°, right 45°, left 90°, and right 90° were 5.62±3.96, 6.90±5.07, 6.82±4.70 and 6.48±4.68, respectively. The 95% confidence limits of SVV at left 45°, right 45°, left 90°, right 90°, and right 90° were(0,12.11),(0,15.21),(0,14.53)and(0,14.16), respectively. The asymmetry ratio is 10% for the absolute value of the 45 ° deviation and 3% for the absolute value of the 90° deviation; ③Intra-class correlation coefficients(ICC) for 0°, left 45°, right 45°, left 90°, right 90°were 0.757, 0.673, 0.674, 0.815, and 0.856, respectively. Conclusion:SVV has good retest reliability and high stability, and the SVV normal value data of different head deviation angles established in the present study can be used as a reference for the diagnosis and evaluation of vestibular disorders.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The Haller index (HI) is widely utilized as a quantitative indicator to assess the extent of the pectus excavatum (PE) deformity, which is the most common chest wall abnormality in children. Both preoperative correction planning and postoperative follow-up need to be based on the standard of normal thoracic growth and development. However, there is currently no established reference range for the HI in children. Consequently, the goal of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of normal HI values among children to understand thoracic developmental characteristics. METHODS: Chest computed tomography images obtained from January 2012 to March 2022 were randomly selected from the imaging system of the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. We divided the images of children into a total of 19 groups: aged 0-3 months (1 group), 4-12 months (1 group) and 1 year to 17 years (17 groups), with 50 males and 50 females, totaling 100 children in each group. HI was measured in the plane where the lowest point of the anterior thoracic wall was located and statistically analysed using SPSS 26.0 software. RESULTS: A total of 1900 patients were included in the study. Our results showed that HI, transverse diameter and anterior-posterior diameter were positively correlated with age (P < 0.05). Using age as the independent variable and HI as the dependent variable, the best-fit regression equations were HI-male = 2.047 * Age0.054(R2 = 0.276, P<0.0001) and HI-female = 2.045 * Age0.067(R2 = 0.398, P<0.0001). Males had significantly larger thoracic diameters than females, and there was little difference in the HI between the 2 sexes. CONCLUSIONS: The HI rapidly increases during the neonatal period, slowly increases during infancy and stops increasing during puberty, with no significant differences between the sexes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pancreatic tissue stiffness and provide a normal reference shear wave velocity (SWV) value of pancreas from healthy adults by Virtual Touch Imaging Quantification (VTIQ) measurements. METHODS: Healthy adult volunteers without known history of hepatobiliary or pancreatic diseases were included. VTIQ elastography (Siemens ACUSON Sequoia, 5C-1 transducer) was used. SWV values were measured at the cephalic, corpus and tail of pancreas and replicated different operators' obtained data. Subgroups were classified according to the volunteers' gender, age, body mass index (BMI), depth of measurements and the echogenicity of the pancreas. RESULTS: From February 2023 to July 2023, 33 healthy adult volunteers were included. The success rate of VTIQ measurements in cephalic, corpus and tail regions was 90.90 % (30/33), 96.97 % (32/33) and 90.90 % (30/33) respectively. The color elastograms of healthy adult pancreas showed uniform blue or simultaneously blue and green. The average SWV values were 0.97±0.26 m/s for cephalic, 0.91±0.24 m/s for corpus and 0.97±0.25 m/s for pancreatic tail respectively (P = 0.198). The mean SWV values of pancreas did not show significant difference with age, gender or depth (P > 0.05). BMI was an influence factor in the measurements of SWV values of cephalic and tail of pancreas (P < 0.05). Pancreas with hyperechoic parenchyma showed higher mean SWV values (P < 0.05). The intra-observer (ICC = 0.938 [95% CI: 0.869-0.971]) and the inter-observer (ICC = 0.887 [95% CI: 0.760-0.947]) agreements of VTIQ measurements were excellent. CONCLUSIONS: The mean SWV value of the pancreas in healthy adults was 0.96±0.20 m/s (range: 0.52-1.74 m/s). VTIQ technique can be used in pancreatic stiffness measurements with good reliability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Static anterior tibial translation (SATT) is radiographically measured to show the amount of tibial translation during the single-leg stance, and thus it is representative of the physiological axial load subjected to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the stance. Increased SATT has been associated with increased posterior tibial slope (PTS) and is also associated with increased graft failure. PURPOSE: To compare the SATT value in a control population with that in a population with an isolated ACL injury, as well as to compare the effect of tibial slope on SATT between the 2 groups. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A consecutive series of patients without ligamentous or meniscal injuries between 2019 and 2022 was reviewed. A matched consecutive cohort of patients with nonacute ACL injuries (surgery between 6 and 12 weeks after injury) without concomitant pathology was reviewed. Preoperative SATT and PTS were measured with a previously validated technique on lateral weightbearing knee radiographs. The SATT value was determined, and regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between SATT and PTS. RESULTS: In total, 101 controls and 115 patients with an ACL injury were included in this study. The mean SATT was 1.31 mm (SD, 2.44 mm) and the mean PTS was 10.61° (SD, 3.28°) in the control cohort. The SATT was larger (mean, 2.27 mm; SD, 3.36 mm) in the ACL-injured cohort despite the tibial slope measurement being less in the ACL-injured cohort (mean, 9.46°; SD, 2.85°; P = .016). Linear regression analysis showed that for every 1° of increase in PTS, there was a 0.34-mm increase in SATT in the control cohort; however, there was a greater increase of 0.5 mm for every 1° of increase in PTS in the ACL-injured cohort. We found no significant differences in SATT when the cohorts were compared by age (P = .26) or sex (P = .10). CONCLUSION: The present study reports a reference SATT value of 1.31 mm (SD, 2.44 mm) in a non-ACL-injured cohort, which was lower than in the ACL-injured cohort (mean, 2.27 mm; SD, 3.36 mm). The effect of slope on weightbearing anterior tibial translation was greater in the ACL-injured population than in the control cohort.

RESUMO

AIM: To investigate cerebral blood volume (CBV) in preterm neonates using time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy measurements of CBV using tNIRS-1 were performed in 70 preterm neonates. For measurements, a sensor was placed for a duration of 1 min, followed by four further reapplications of the sensor, overall five measurements. RESULTS: In this study, 70 preterm neonates with a mean ± SD gestational age of 33.4 ± 1.7 weeks and a birthweight of 1931 ± 398 g were included with a postnatal age of 4.7 ± 2.0 days. Altogether, 2383 CBV values were obtained with an overall mean of 1.85 ± 0.30 mL/100 g brain. A total of 95% of the measured CBV values varied in a range from -0.31 to 0.33 from the overall individual mean. Taking the deviation of the mean of each single application for each patient, this range reduced from -0.07 to 0.07. The precision of the measurement defined as within-variation in CBV was 0.24 mL/100 g brain. CONCLUSION: The overall mean CBV in stable preterm neonates was 1.85 ± 0.30 mL/100 g brain. The within-variation in CBV was 0.24 mL/100 g brain. Based on the precision obtained by our data, CBV of 1.85 ± 0.30 mL/100 g brain may be assumed as normal value for this cohort.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Dysfunction of small nerve fibers remains a major public health concern. Subjects suspected of having small nerve fiber damage need to undergo reliable tests to confirm the diagnosis. Sudomotor function test is a reliable noninvasive exploration for detecting peripheral neuropathies. Nevertheless, the normal reference values derived from the sudomotor function test are not known in the African population. The objective of this study was therefore to describe the normal values of Electrochemical Skin Conductance (ESC) measured by the sudomotor function test in healthy African subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between December 1st, 2021 and May 31st, 2022, ESC was measured in 475 healthy subjects (median age: 42 [31-53] years, 46% men) using a sudomotor function test, in the hands and feet. Investigators proposed the examination and received participants' consent; demographic, anthropometric, biological, and clinical data were obtained before the test. Data on 475 healthy study participants who underwent sudomotor function testing was collected and analyzed. The sociodemographic (age, sex), anthropometric (weight, height, waist circumference, body mass index), diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and electrochemical skin conductances of the hands and feet were assessed. RESULTS: ESC values were statistically higher in men compared to women (right hand ESC: 70 [60-78] versus 63 [53-72], left hand ESC: 72 [61-80] versus 68 [57-75], right foot ESC: 77 [82-99] versus 72 [64-79], ESC left foot: 76 [68-82] versus 72 [62-78] respectively). ESC values were significantly inversely correlated with age (right hand ESC: r=-0.12, P=0.006; left hand ESC: r=-0.11, P=0.01; right foot ESC: r=-0.37, P<0.0001; ESC left foot: r=-0.38, P<0.0001). ESC values measured in feet were significantly inversely correlated with body mass index (right foot r=-0.22, P<0.0001; left foot r=-0.21, P<0.0001). CONCLUSION: This study reports normal reference values for ESCs according to age and gender in the healthy African population. Progressive decrease in ESC with aging is confirmed by our data. The value of ESC seems lower in the African population than in other reported ethnicities. This finding needs to be further explored in additional studies.

RESUMO

Background and Aims: Shear wave elastography is a potential method for evaluating peripheral neuropathy, but lacking reference values. The aim of this study was to measure tibial nerve stiffness in healthy individuals using shear wave elastography and to investigate the influencing factors of tibial nerve stiffness. Methods: Shear wave elastography of bilateral tibial nerves was performed in 50 healthy individuals 4 cm proximal to the medial malleolus. Mean shear modulus data of tibial nerves were obtained and recorded. Intra- and interobserver agreement were assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients. Differences among groups (grouped by laterality, sex, age, and body mass index) were analyzed with independent-samples t-tests and paired t-tests. Effect size (Cohen's d) was also calculated. Results: The intra-and interobserver agreement were moderate (intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.700-0.747) for all participants, and was poor (intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.265-0.088) in very thin people (body mass index <18.5 kg/m2). The shear wave elastography measurements of the tibial nerve did not show a significant difference between legs, sexes, or different age groups. Higher values of tibial nerve stiffness were found in thinner participants. Conclusions: Shear wave elastography is a method to evaluate the stiffness of peripheral nerves. The measurement results were likely influenced by body mass index of the participants.

RESUMO

Introduction: The number of children with acute and chronic liver disease is rising. Moreover, liver involvement may be limited to subtle changes in organ texture especially in early childhood and some syndromic conditions, such as ciliopathies. Attenuation imaging coefficient (ATI), shear wave elastography (SWE), and dispersion (SWD) are emerging ultrasound technologies providing data about attenuation, elasticity, and viscosity of liver tissue. This additional and qualitative information has been correlated with certain liver pathologies. However, limited data are available for healthy controls and have mainly been raised in adults. Methods: This prospective monocentric study was conducted at a university hospital with a specialization in pediatric liver disease and transplantation. Between February and July 2021, 129 children aged 0-17.92 years were recruited. Study participants attended outpatient clinics due to minor illnesses excluding liver or cardiac diseases, acute (febrile) infections or other conditions affecting liver tissue and function. ATI, SWE, and SWD measurements were performed on an Aplio i800 (Canon Medical Systems) with an i8CX1 curved transducer by two different investigators with long-standing experience in pediatric ultrasound according to a standardized protocol. Results: Considering multiple potential covariates, we derived percentile charts for all 3 devices relying on the Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) approach. 112 children were considered for further analysis, excluding those with abnormal liver function and under-/overweight (BMI SDS<-1.96/> 1.96, respectively). Age range was 0-17.92 years (mean 6.89±0.50SD), 58% were male. The mean duration of the ultrasound examination (basic ultrasound plus SWE, SWD, and ATI) was 6.67±0.22 minutes and it was well tolerated in 83% (n=92) of cases. While ATI was related to age, SWD was found to depend on BMI SDS, and SWE on abdominal wall thickness and sex. ATI correlated with neither SWE nor SWD, but SWE was correlated with SWD. Conclusions: Our study provides norm values and reference charts for ATI, SWE, and SWD considering important covariates including age, sex and, BMI. This may help to implement these promising tools into imaging diagnostics of liver disease and to improve the diagnostic relevance of liver ultrasound. In addition, these noninvasive techniques proved to be time-effective and highly reliable, which make them ideal for application in children.

RESUMO

Objective:To reevaluate the upper limit of normal (ULN) of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) by retrospectively analyzing the ALT levels in healthy people in Ningbo area. Methods:A total of 56 140 people who underwent health examination and detection of liver biochemical indexes in the Affiliated Hospital of Medical School of Ningbo University and Yinzhou Huamao Hospital of Ningbo from 2018 to 2020 were enrolled. After excluding relevant factors that may lead to liver injury, 11 411 people were included to compare the difference of serum ALT levels among different genders and age groups (20 to 29 years, 30 to 39 years, 40 to 49 years and 50 to 59 years) to determine the ALT ULN in different gender groups. Statistical methods were performed using two independent samples t test and analysis of variance. Results:The serum ALT of males was (19.20±7.90) U/L, which was higher than that of females ((13.75±6.17) U/L), with statistical significance ( t=41.16, P<0.001). The serum ALT ULN in males and in females were 35 U/L and 26 U/L, respectively. The serum ALT levels of 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49 and 50 to 59 years old groups were (15.48±7.61) U/L, (16.21±7.40) U/L, (17.36±7.52) U/L and (18.77±7.57) U/L, respectively. The difference was statistically significant ( F=71.51, P<0.001). Serum ALT level in 50 to 59 years old group was higher than that in 20 to 29 years old group, and the difference was statistically significant ( t=13.11, P<0.01). In males, the ALT ULN of 20 to 29 years old was the lowest of 34.43 U/L, and highest of 35.29 U/L in 40 to 49 years old. In females, the ALT ULN in the 20 to 29 years old group was the lowest of 23.01 U/L, and the ALT ULN in the 50 to 59 years old group was the highest of 30.79 U/L. ALT ULN increased with age in females. The serum ALT of males was higher than that of females in all age groups ( t=29.55, 26.91, 13.43 and 4.62, respectively, all P<0.05). Conclusions:The serum ALT level is significantly correlated to gender and age. The serum ALT ULNs of healthy adult are 35 U/L in males and 26 U/L in females in Ningbo area.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Increases in the diameter of the optic nerve sheath (ONSD) on ultrasound are associated with high intracranial pressure (hICP). The normal value varies with altitude and the population studied. The objective of this study is to describe the normal values of the ONSD in a healthy adult population of the city of Bogotá, Colombia, at 2640 meters above sea level (masl). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted on a total of 247 healthy individuals recruited from May 2021 to May 2022 who were subjected to the color, low power, optic disk, safety, elevated frequency, dual (CLOSED) protocol for measuring the bilateral ONSD adjusted to the eyeball transverse diameter (ETD). RESULTS: A total of 230 individuals were analyzed; the average ONSD of the right eye (RE) was 0.449 cm (range 0.288-0.7) and that of the left eye (LE) was 0.454 cm (range 0.285-0.698); the correlation between RE and LE was 0.93 (p < 0.005), and the correlation of the ONSD/ETD ratios for the RE and LE was lower (r2 = 0.79, p < 0.005). A total of 10.8% of the studied population had values greater than 0.55 cm. CONCLUSIONS: The median ONSD and ONSD/ETD ratio in the city of Bogotá are similar to those described in other populations; however, approximately 10.8% of the healthy population may present higher values, which would limit the use of ONSD on its own for clinical decision-making, only repeated measurements with significant changes in the ONSD and ONSD/ETD or asymmetries between the measurements of both eyes linked to clinical findings would allow the diagnosis of hICP.

RESUMO

Backgroud: Noninvasive myocardial work, estimated by left ventricular (LV) pressure-strain loop (PSL), has been introduced for assessing LV myocardial performance. Based on both blood pressure and speckle-tracking derived strain data, noninvasive myocardial work is considered to be less load-dependent than global longitudinal strain (GLS). In some conditions, such as hypertension or aortic coarctation, the increased afterload will affect strain measurements, and myocardial work can serve as a more robust metric. Objective: We prospectively recruited healthy children to explore the relationship between myocardial work indices and body size parameters, and to determine the reference values of noninvasive myocardial work indices in healthy children. Methods: 183 healthy children (aged 1-18 years, males: 52.5%) were enrolled in the study. Global work index (GWI), global constructive work (GCW), global wasted work (GWW), global work efficiency (GWE), were assessed by LVPSL and compared according to age and sex. Results: The mean for GWI was 1,448.7 ± 265.0 mm Hg%, 1,859.8 ± 290.7 mm Hg% for GCW, and the median (interquartile range) for GWW was 54.0 (33.0-82.0) mm Hg% and 97.0 (95.0-99.0) % for GWE. male had greater GWI and GCW) than female (1,572.5 ± 250.2 mm Hg% vs. 1,312.2 ± 208.7 mm Hg% and 1,944.3 ± 299.2 mm Hg% vs. 1,766.6 ± 251.5 mm Hg%, respectively, all P < 0.001). GWI and GCW were significantly correlated with baseline parameters, including age, height, weight, BSA, body mass index, heart rate, and blood pressure. After indexed to BSA, GWI (BSA), GCW (BSA) remained significantly negatively correlated with age (P < 0.001). Conclusions: we proposed the normal reference values and regression equations for GWI and GCW based on age and BSA in healthy children. This might provide a basis of reference for the evaluation of cardiac function in children with cardiopulmonary disease.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Albuminuria is an important marker of renal damage and can precede proteinuria; thus, it can be a useful analyte in the early diagnosis of kidney diseases. Albuminuria has also been found in dogs with hypertension, inflammatory, infectious, and neoplastic diseases. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to establish a reference interval (RI) for albuminuria in dogs. METHODS: One hundred sixty-four clinically healthy dogs were enrolled in the study. Urinary albumin was determined by the immunoturbidimetric method, and albumin excretion was expressed as the urinary albumin-to-creatinine (UAC) ratio. The RI for UAC was established. RESULTS: After exclusions, 124 dogs from 32 breeds remained. The median UAC of the study population was 3.0 mg/g (range: 0-48). The RI was defined as 0-19 mg/g (with a 90% CI for the upper limit of 13-28 mg/g). No significant difference was found between male and female dogs or between different age and body weight groups. The results of Sighthounds (n = 30) and Beagle dogs (n = 23) did not differ from the other breeds. CONCLUSION: The canine RI of UAC is similar but somewhat narrower than the human RI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Measurement of the posterior tibial slope (PTS) angle has important applications in total knee replacement surgery, high tibial osteotomy, and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. This study aimed to determine the mean PTS of knee joints in healthy Chinese adults, and provide data to guide knee surgery in China. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 1257 (n = 1233, 50.4% male) plain X-ray films of participants aged 25-59 years was performed. The picture archiving and communication system was used for PTS measurement. The PTS was defined as the angle between the vertical line of the tangent of the anterior tibial cortex of the proximal tibia, and the tangent line of the tibial cortex. Two imaging physicians conducted the PTS measurements independently, and both the inter- and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated. RESULTS: The mean PTS value was 7.68 ± 3.84° (range: 0-21°). The left PTS was significantly smaller in males than in females (7.22 ± 3.89 vs 8.05 ± 3.60; P = 0.005). Additionally, the PTS in participants aged 25-29 years was significantly larger than that in the other age groups (Left side: 8.64 ± 3.73 vs 6.92 ± 3.42, 7.42 ± 3.75, 7.53 ± 3.98; P <  0.001 and Right side: 8.68 ± 3.84 vs 7.48 ± 4.21, 7.13 ± 3.64, 7.66 ± 3.80; P = 0.004). There were no significant differences in PTS between the left and right sides. Two-way analysis of variance suggested that the differences in PTS between age groups were not affected by sex. The interobserver ICC was 0.91 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.85-0.94), and the intraobserver ICC was 0.90 (95% CI: 0.82-0.94). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that there were significant differences in PTS based on sex and age, highlighting the need to provide individualized treatment for knee surgery. It provided valuable information regarding the normal PTS values in Chinese adults and presented regionalised data to guide knee surgery.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To establish a predictive equation for commonly used pulmonary ventilation function parameters in children aged 6-<16 years in northeast China. METHODS: A total of 504 healthy children from Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang provinces of China were selected for the prospective study, among whom there were 242 boys and 262 girls. The JAEGER MasterScreen Pneumo spirometer was used to measure pulmonary ventilation function. With the measured values of 10 parameters, including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC ratio, and back-extrapolated volume (BEV), as dependent variables and age, body height, and body weight as independent variables, the stepwise multivariate regression method was used to establish the regression equation for children of different sexes. The mean of relative prediction error was used to evaluate the applicability of the predictive equation. RESULTS: The boys aged 9-<10 years and 15-<16 years had significantly higher body height, FVC, and FEV1 than the girls of the same age (P<0.05), and the boys aged 9-<10, 10-<11, 11-<12, and 13-<14 years had a significantly lower FEV1/FVC ratio than the girls of the same age (P<0.05). The correlation analysis showed that all parameters, except FEV1/FVC ratio and BEV/FVC ratio, were significantly positively correlated with age, body height, and body weight (P<0.001). Further regression analysis showed that age and body height were the influencing factors for most parameters, while body weight was less frequently included in the regression equation. Compared with the predictive equations from previous studies, the regression equation established in this study had relatively good applicability in the study population. CONCLUSIONS: A new predictive equation for the main pulmonary ventilation function parameters has been established in this study for children aged 6-<16 years in northeast China, which provides a basis for accurate judgment of pulmonary function abnormalities in clinical practice.

RESUMO

Background: Left and right atrium (LA and RA) exert an essential and dynamic role in ventricular filling and hence affect heart performance. Strain quantification has been reported as a novel parameter to assess function. However, the assessment of bi-atrial strains with cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) based techniques is still limited and gender- and age-specific normal values in a healthy population are missing. Methods: One hundred and fifty healthy volunteers (49.8 ± 17.3 years, 75 males) undergoing 1.5 Tesla CMR examination were retrospectively and consecutively recruited. LA and RA free wall (RAFW) radial and longitudinal strains (RS and LS) associated with atrial reservoir, conduit and booster pump functions were evaluated with CMR based tissue tracking (CMR-TT) technique. Results: The reservoir, conduit and pump LS resulted as 30.7 ± 10.2%, 19.5 ± 8.2%, 10.9 ± 3.7% for LA, and 52.2 ± 17.6%, 33.3 ± 14.2%, 19.1 ± 8.5% for RAFW, respectively. The amplitude of RA strains was significantly larger than that of LA strains, except for conduit RS. With the increase of age, the decrement of majority of reservoir and conduit strains were observed, while pump strains remained unaffected. Females presented with significantly larger RAFW strains compared with males, especially in the elderly. In addition to the positive correlation between atrial strains and emptying fraction, the negative correlation between atrial strains and volume index was also confirmed. Intra-observer reproducibility of LA strains was superior to RAFW strains (coefficient of variation: 10.12-17.04% vs. 10.80-27.36%, respectively), and the measurement of reservoir and conduit strains was more reproducible in comparison with pump strain. Conclusion: CMR-TT is a feasible and reproducible technique to quantify LA and RA strains and determine atrial phasic functions. The existence of age- and gender-related difference of strains suggests the necessity to establish specific normal values for individual populations.

RESUMO

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is a well-known complication of treatment with high dosage glucocorticoids and has been described in a few patients with Cushing's syndrome. In this case report, we describe the, to our knowledge, first case of a patient with endogenous Cushing's syndrome with a bone infarction located in the distal femur. In patients with Cushing's syndrome and bone pain, the diagnosis of bone infarction should be considered as it can occur as a rare complication of hypercortisolism.

RESUMO

Laboratory-controlled physiological data for the multimammate rat (Mastomys natalensis) are scarce, despite this species being a known reservoir and vector for zoonotic viruses, including the highly pathogenic Lassa virus, as well as other arenaviruses and many species of bacteria. For this reason, M. natalensis is an important rodent for the study of host-virus interactions within laboratory settings. Herein, we provide basic blood parameters for age- and sex-distributed animals in regards to blood counts, cell phenotypes and serum chemistry of a specific-pathogen-monitored M.natalensis breeding colony, to facilitate scientific insight into this important and widespread rodent species.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) normal value of healthy children, and provide a reliable theoretical basis for clinical diagnosis. METHODS: 481 healthy children aged 6-15-y-old in three primary schools in Chengdu were subjected for FeNO detection. Through the statistical analysis, the upper limit normal value of FeNO among the healthy children was obtained, and the related influencing factors of FeNO value were analyzed. RESULTS: Among the 481 heathy children, the geometric mean value of FeNO was 14.59 ppb (minimum value was 5 ppb, maximum value was 69 ppb), and the upper limit of normal value was 28 ppb. The age, height, and weight all have significant correlations with FeNO. CONCLUSION: The upper limit of FeNO in healthy children aged 6-15-y-old was 28.0 ppb. Inflammation in the airway was suggested when the value of FeNO exceeds 28.0 ppb. Furthermore, the influencing factors such as age, weight, height must be considered.

RESUMO

A 42-year-old man was admitted for an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction revealing an acute thrombosis of the left anterior descending and right coronary arteries. Following this acute multivessel coronary occlusion in a young individual at low cardiovascular risk, he tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 infection. (Level of Difficulty: Beginner.).
