Objectives. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are recurrent in the footwear industry, resulting in absenteeism. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the influence of overtime work and physical recovery time on the occurrence of WMSD-related absenteeism using a system dynamics model. As ergonomic methods have limitations in quantitatively simulating the behavior of these relationships, the integration of computational modeling techniques has emerged as a methodological alternative to bridge this gap. Methods. An ergonomic work analysis (EWA) was developed in a production cell of a large company. A model of causal relationships (causal loop diagram) and a simulation model (flow and stock diagram) were then developed, where three scenarios for overtime and physical recovery time were analyzed. Results. Working an additional hour resulted in a 42% increase in physical overload, leading to 7.62 leave requests per year and 78.7 days of employee absenteeism. Increasing the physical recovery time by 15 min reduced the overload to 36.5%, resulting in 6.8 leave requests per year and 71.1 days of employee absenteeism. Conclusions. Properly managing excess workload and providing adequate physical recovery for professionals is necessary to mitigate the productivity impacts of absenteeism in the footwear industry.

The purpose of this study was to visualize the nurses' approach to recording and to identify the causes that lead to overtime. The data used were those related to the performance and entry of nursing tasks (observation and care acts). Data from Hospital A, a provider of acute care with approximately 400 beds, was used. One month of work data were obtained from 12 nurses who were judged by the chief nurse to be excellent and efficient in their work. 12 nurses were divided into three groups: a high-level sequential entry rate group (>0.6), a medium-level sequential entry rate group (0.4 to <0.6), and a low-level sequential entry rate group (<0.4). The high-level sequential input rate group had data input every time they performed their work, so that the work implementation and input implementation were completed at 5:00 p.m. The medium-level sequential entry rate group tended to enter data about an hour late when they started work, which tended to result in overtime. The low-level sequential input rate group tended to input work in the afternoon, resulting in significant overtime. The data of approximately 400 nurses in a 900-bed University Hospital B, where Team Compass is implemented, were used to analyze the actual sequential input rate. 884 nurses in University Hospital B, of whom 397 had input data for 19 consecutive months. The sequential input rate in November 2020, one and a half years after the start of operation, was divided into five groups by 20%: 0-20%: 27 (7%), 20-40%: 30 (7%), 40-60%: 37 (9%), 60-80%: 69 (17%), and over 80%: 234 (59%). The number of employees who have been working overtime hours is also high. Although the importance of sequential entry to achieve results in reducing overtime hours continued to be strongly presented, there were 23% of nurses who indicated a sequential entry rate of less than 60%.

BACKGROUND: Long working hours are associated with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. This study investigated the relationship between the working hours and dietary qualities and patterns in Korean workers. METHODS: Data from 24,523 workers were extracted from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2013-2021. The Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI), which ranges from 0 to 100, with a higher score indicating greater adherence to Korean dietary guidelines and superior dietary quality, was used for dietary assessment. We identified dietary patterns and classified workers using latent profile analysis. Logistic regressions were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Five distinct dietary patterns emerged: healthy diet (24.8%), low-vegetable diet (14.0%), average diet (7.8%), low-fruit diet (31.4%), and poor diet (22.0%). The mean KHEI score was 60.8, with the highest score observed in the healthy diet pattern (71.3) and the lowest, in the poor diet pattern (50.0). Compared with working 35-40 h/week, working ≥55 h/week was negatively associated with KHEI scores (ß: -1.08; 95% CI: -1.67, -0.49). Those working ≥55 h/week were less likely to have a healthy diet pattern (OR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.72, 0.91) and more likely to have a low-fruit diet (OR: 1.36; 95% CI: 1.20, 1.55) or poor diet pattern (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.05, 1.43) compared with those working 35-40 h/week. CONCLUSION: Long working hours are associated with undesirable dietary quality and patterns. Policy interventions aimed at enhancing dietary quality are needed to alleviate the health burdens associated with long working hours.

Long working hours and overwork have recently emerged as pressing public health concerns. We explored the association between long working hours and suicidal ideation in female workers. A total of 8017 women (24,331 observations) from the fourth to eighth waves of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (2012-2020) were analyzed. To address the repeated measurements within each participant, we employed a generalized estimating equation to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 1.9% for those working 35-40 h/week and 4.4% for those working ≥55 h/week. Compared to individuals working 35-40 h/week, those working ≥55 h/week were more likely to experience concurrent suicidal ideation (OR [95% CI]:1.85 [1.43-2.39]). The OR (95% CI) of the association between long working hours and onset of suicidal ideation in the subsequent wave was 1.69 (1.20-2.38) for ≥55 h/week. In subgroup analysis, this association was pronounced among workers with low-income levels (OR [95% CI]: 1.97 [1.29-3.02]) and blue-collar occupations (OR [95% CI]: 2.27 [1.41-3.66]). Policy efforts are required to protect the mental health of female workers exposed to long working hours.

ObjectiveTo explore the impact of overtime work on work-related musculoskeletal disorders in male employees in the automobile manufacturing industry. Methods A total of 1 731 male employees with more than one year of working experience from an automobile manufacturing industry were selected as the research subjects using judgment sampling method. The Musculoskeletal Disorder Questionnaire was used to investigate the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorder. Employees were divided into control group and overtime group, and a 1∶1 matching was performed using propensity score matching method, and 573 pairs were successfully matched. The prevalence of WMSDs in various body parts was compared between the two groups. Results The overtime working rate of the research subjects was 34.2%, and the prevalence of WMSDs was 57.1%. Overtime work increased the risk of WMSDs in the neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back, ankle/feet, and overall body of the workers (all P<0.05), with the odd ratio and 95% confidence interval of 1.43 (1.10-1.85), 1.38 (1.06-1.80), 1.42 (1.07-1.89), 1.28 (1.01-1.62), 1.37 (1.01-1.87), and 1.49 (1.17-1.89), respectively. However, there was no association between overtime work and the risk of WMSDs in the elbows, hands/wrists, hips, and knees of the subjects (all P>0.05). Conclusion Overtime work increases the risk of WMSDs in the neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back, ankles/feet, and overall body of male employees in the automobile manufacturing industry. Enterprises should improve labor organization, reduce overtime work, and protect the health of workers.

This study aimed to investigate whether obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with an increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and to perform subgroup analysis by sex and working hours. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 8157 subjects who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The adults completed the STOP-BANG score to measure their risk of OSA, and blood and urine samples were collected to ascertain the severity of CKD based on the estimated glomerular filtration rate and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio. Multivariate logistic regression was used for complex sample analysis. After fully adjusting for the confounding variables, the high-risk OSA group showed a significantly higher risk of developing albuminuria and CKD than the low-risk group, particularly among men. Odds ratio (OR) 1.72, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-2.6 and (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.14-2.45), respectively. Additionally, men who worked for 40 h/week showed a significant association between OSA, CKD, and albuminuria. This study supports the link between OSA and the risk of kidney disease, especially among men and those who work long hours. Screening and treating OSA may be a crucial strategy for preventing kidney disease, particularly in high-risk populations.

Despite the recent and sharp rise in psychedelic research, few studies have investigated how classic psychedelic use relates to employees' work-related outcomes. This is surprising given that the increased use, decriminalization, and legalization of classic psychedelics in the United States (U.S.) has the potential to impact both employees and their organizations. Addressing this gap, the current study explores how employees' lifetime psilocybin use relates to the amount of overtime they work, thereby offering insight into what current trends in psilocybin use could mean for businesses. Using pooled, cross-sectional data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2002-2014) on 217,963 adults employed in the U.S. full-time, this study tests whether lifetime psilocybin use is associated with employees' number of overtime hours worked in the past week. After adjusting for sociodemographics and other substance use, a significant negative association is found between employees' lifetime psilocybin use and the amount of overtime they reported working. Specifically, the findings suggest that lifetime psilocybin use in the U.S. full-time working population is associated with an estimated 44,348,400 fewer overtime hours worked per year and may help explain recent findings linking employees' lifetime psilocybin use to a reduction in sick leave taken.

Introduction: Chinese workers suffer more from overtime than in many countries. Excessive working hours can crowd out personal time and cause work-family imbalance, affecting workers' subjective well-being. Meanwhile, self-determination theory suggests that higher job autonomy may improve the subjective well-being of employees. Methods: Data came from the 2018 China Labor-force Dynamics Survey (CLDS 2018). The analysis sample consisted of 4,007 respondents. Their mean age was 40.71 (SD = 11.68), and 52.8% were males. This study adopted four measures of subjective well-being: happiness, life satisfaction, health status, and depression. Confirmation factor analysis was employed to extract the job autonomy factor. Multiple linear regression methods were applied to examine the relationship between overtime, job autonomy, and subjective well-being. Results: Overtime hours showed weak association with lower happiness (ß = -0.002, p < 0.01), life satisfaction (ß = -0.002, p < 0.01), and health status (ß = -0.002, p < 0.001). Job autonomy was positively related to happiness (ß = 0.093, p < 0.01), life satisfaction (ß = 0.083, p < 0.01). There was a significant negative correlation between involuntary overtime and subjective well-being. Involuntary overtime might decrease the level of happiness (ß = -0.187, p < 0.001), life satisfaction (ß = -0.221, p < 0.001), and health status (ß = -0.129, p < 0.05) and increase the depressive symptoms (ß = 1.157, p < 0.05). Conclusion: While overtime had a minimal negative effect on individual subjective well-being, involuntary overtime significantly enlarged it. Improving individual's job autonomy is beneficial for individual subjective well-being.

Introduction: Previous studies have defined "workaholic" effort as "bad effort" while work engagement is defined as "good effort." Active overtime is a mapping of work effort, but at this stage there is still relatively little exploration of the motivation behind "good effort" in the Chinese context. Methods: This study explores the reasons that promote employees' initiative to perform overtime work in Chinese enterprises based on the two-factor theory. The study mainly used data empirical research approaches, including exploratory factor analysis, validation factor analysis, and data modeling. The questionnaire scale was developed based on factors that have been proven to be of high reliability and validity. The data are mainly for employees who are currently employed in Chinese companies. Results and discussion: We received a total of 1741 valid questionnaires, which provided a good database for this study. The results of the study show that both motivational and hygiene factors can positively promote employees' motivation to intentionally work overtime to a certain extent. Among them, overtime culture, institutional agreement, good physical office environment, career growth, financial rewards, and work challenges can positively promote motivation to work overtime. Work stress can increase the frequency and intensity of overtime work, but negatively promote motivation to work overtime. The study helps to improve enterprise management, optimize work design, and enhance psychological satisfaction.

PURPOSE: Overtime work is associated with a risk of developing various diseases, including oral diseases. Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) is a more comprehensive assessment than those of individual diseases and can be affected by longer working hours. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined the association of overtime work duration with OHRQoL. Data were obtained from an online survey of Japanese workers in February 2016. OHRQoL was assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile-49 (OHIP-49). Poisson regression with robust variance was used to estimate the ratio of means and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of overtime work duration for OHIP-49 scores after adjusting for sociodemographic and health behavior covariates. RESULTS: Of 2,764 (2,178 male and 586 female) workers (mean age, 44.6 ± 10.0 years), those with longer duration of overtime work tended to exhibit poorer OHRQoL. The mean OHIP-49 scores of those who did not work overtime and worked for ≥5 h overtime were 27.93 ± 28.53 and 40.97 ± 38.86, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, compared to those who did not work overtime, the mean OHIP-49 score was 1.41 times higher (95% CI 1.38-1.44) for those who worked for ≥5 h overtime. CONCLUSION: Longer overtime work duration was associated with poor OHRQoL.

BACKGROUND: Long working hours are detrimental to physical and mental health. However, the association between long working hours and psychosomatic symptoms have remained controversial, possibly because of the existence of mediators between working hours and psychosomatic stress responses. We hypothesized that lifestyle habits, regarding sleep and mealtimes, act as mediators, and analyzed the associations between long working hours, sleep duration, mealtime regularity, and psychosomatic stress responses in office workers. METHODS: From April 2017 to March 2018, an online cross-sectional survey regarding overtime work hours, work-related stress, sleep, and eating habits was conducted with employees of 17 companies located in Tokyo, Japan. Answers were obtained from 3559 employees, and 3100 provided written consent for the academic use of their answers, and were included in the analysis. A path analysis was conducted to assess the effect of overtime work on psychosomatic stress via shortened sleep or irregular mealtimes. RESULTS: Overtime work hours had no direct effect on psychosomatic stress responses and depressive symptoms. However, overtime work hours affected sleep duration and the regularity of mealtimes. The effects of overtime work hours on psychosomatic stress responses and depressive symptoms were completely mediated by sleep duration and the regularity of mealtimes. CONCLUSION: Long working hours do not affect mental health directly; however, shortened sleep duration and irregular mealtimes mediate the effect of long working hours on psychosomatic stress responses and depressive symptoms.

Half of nurses' overtime hours are due to records. Nursing records, which are mainly narrative records, cost a large amount of money. However, it has been pointed out that there are problems with their quality and post-use. In this study, we analyzed the value of nursing records for physicians. As a result, we found that the use of standard observation terms in nursing records can create an environment in which patients' conditions can be shared. To create this environment, the physicians of the clinical path committee classified hospitalized patients in terms of disease, treatment, and examination, and created a list of 778 process paths. Physicians, nurses, and researchers collaborated to develop digital contents with high-priority observation items and care actions adapted to patient conditions for each path. We developed a clinical support system equipped with these digital contents. In May 2019, we installed the system in a 900-bed university hospital. Then, in October 2020, we installed the system in a 400-bed general hospital. We used "nurses' overtime hours for recording" and "reduction rate" as indicators of the usefulness of this system. In the 900-bed university hospital, we compared the previous year's results for March, the end of the fiscal year. This overtime hours were 2,944 hours 00 minutes in March 2019 and 2,141 hours 55 minutes in March 2020. 27% reduction was indicated. The respective bed occupancy rates were 90.80 percent and 90.60 percent, with no difference. In the 400-bed general hospital, This overtime hours were compared to the previous year, covering November and December after one month of implementation. 386 hours in November 2019 and 204.5 hours in November 2020. 47% reduction indicated. 366 hours in December 2019 and 214.5 hours in December 2020. A reduction of 41% was shown. These results suggest that the implementation of this system can both improve the quality of team care and reduce overtime.

Background: Work-related mental health and psychological injuries are important issues related to people's livelihood and wellbeing. Currently, digitalization and intelligent technology have an extremely large impact on the workforce. China is actively promoting the deep integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and manufacturing, which may have important implications for the mental health of manufacturing workers. However, existing researches have paid little attention to the influence of AI on the mental wellbeing of workers in China. There is a lack of relevant empirical research, and the findings in existing studies are inconsistent. Methods: Using data from the 2018 China Labor Force Dynamics Survey, this paper studies the impact of AI on the depressive symptoms of manufacturing workers and uses stepwise and bootstrapping methods to test whether overtime work and the work environment exhibit mediating effects. Robustness tests were performed by using alternative measures for the dependent and mediating variables. Finally, the heterogeneity in the impact of AI by skill level and generation was examined. Results: AI can reduce the psychological depression scores of manufacturing workers by 1.643 points, which indicates that AI promotes workers' mental health. Working overtime is not a mediator between AI and mental health. However, the work environment is a mediator between AI and the mental health of manufacturing workers: it explains 11.509% of workers' mental health. The impact of AI on the mental health of manufacturing workers varies by skill level and generation. AI improves the mental health of low-skilled manufacturing workers by 2.342 points and that of manufacturing workers born before the 1980's by 2.070 points. Conclusions: The application of AI is conducive to improvements in the mental health of manufacturing workers. Improving the work environment is a powerful way to increase the positive effects of AI on workers' mental health. The impact of AI on the mental health of manufacturing workers varies by skill level and generation. The mental health of low-skilled workers and workers born after 1980 is affected more positively by the adoption of AI.

AIM: We aimed to grasp the actual working hours of Japanese obstetricians and gynecologists (OB/GYN doctors) as accurately as possible, using the same method of the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW). METHODS: The time study targeted OB/GYN doctors working at 10 universities nationwide including Niigata University and 21 institutions which take a role of perinatal care in Niigata prefecture. Working hours per week were calculated based on the following categories: regular and overtime work inside the hospital, work outside the hospital, self-improvement, education, research, and others. Data on weekly working hours were converted to yearly data for analyses. RESULTS: A time study of 10 universities nationwide revealed that 30% of doctors work overtime for more than 1860 h even if they do not include on-call shifts in their working hours. In 21 institutions in Niigata, physicians in Niigata University worked more overtime than other hospitals. It became clear that community health care was supported by dispatching physicians working at university. Furthermore, the results of simulations predicted the pessimistic situation of perinatal medical care in Niigata. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed the possibility to exist much more OB/GYN doctors who work more than 1860 h of overtime work per year than the data presented by the MHLW based on nation-wide survey in 2019. The fact that the working hours at the side jobs had a great influence on the increase in overtime work of physicians in University was the same result as the report of MHLW published in 2021.

This study examined the effects of short sleep duration (SSD) on hemodynamic and psychological responses under long working hours (LWH) in a laboratory experiment. Sixteen subjects participated in a crossover design experiment consisting of two conditions: normal (7-hours) sleep and short (5-hours) sleep. In each condition, participants engaged in simulated LWH (13 hours a day), comprising 12 task sessions. Hemodynamic and psychological responses were measured in each session. Results showed that there were significant main effects of condition and session but no interaction for hemodynamic and psychological responses. Systolic blood pressure and fatigue were higher in the later sessions than the first one. Stroke volume, sleepiness, fatigue, and stress were higher in the 5-hour than the 7-hour sleep condition (all p<0.05). These results suggest that although the combined effect of LWH and SSD was not significant, both LWH and SSD caused a hemodynamic and psychological burden.

BACKGROUND: Burnout, musculoskeletal pain, and sharps injuries (SIs) affect medical workers. AIM: To establish a model between SIs, burnout, and the risk factors to assess the extent to which burnout affects SIs. METHODS: This questionnaire was used for an observational and cross-sectional study, which was based on members at a hospital affiliated with a medical university in Taichung, Taiwan, in 2020. The valid responses constituted 68.5% (1734 of 2531). The items were drawn from the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire and Copenhagen burnout inventory and concerned work experience, occupational category, presence of chronic diseases, sleep duration, overtime work, and work schedule. Factor analysis, chi-square test, Fisher exact test, Multiple linear, logistic regression and Sobel test were conducted. The present analyses were performed using SAS Enterprise Guide 6.1 software (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, United States), and significance was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS: Personal and work-related burnout ranks, sex, work experience ranks, occupational groups, drinking in the past month, sleep duration per day, presence of chronic diseases, overtime work ranks, and work schedule were associated with SIs. Frequent upper limb and lower limb pain (pain occurring every day or once a week) determined to be related to SIs. High personal burnout (> Q3) and high work-related burnout (> Q3) mediated the relationship between SIs and frequent lower limb pain. Similarly, frequent lower limb pain mediated the relationship of SIs with high personal and high work-related burnout. High personal and high work-related burnout mediated the relationships of SIs with overtime work and irregular shift work. The mediating model provides strong evidence of an association between mental health and SIs. CONCLUSION: Burnout was determined to contribute to SIs occurrence; specifically, it mediated the relationships of SIs with frequent musculoskeletal pain, overtime work, and irregular shift work.

OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has forced many employees to alter both their work style and lifestyle. This study aimed to examine how the combination of changes in overtime working hours and social interaction affects the full-time employees' mental well-being, focusing on the difference in household composition. METHODS: In November 2020, we conducted a cross-sectional Internet survey that included 4388 Japanese men and women aged 25-64 years, who continued the same full-time job during the pandemic. We performed a logistic regression analysis using a combination of the changes in overtime working hours and social interaction as an independent variable, and the presence/absence of deterioration of mental well-being as the dependent variable. RESULTS: Overall, 44% of participants reported the deterioration of mental well-being compared to before the outbreak. The multivariate analysis revealed that the participants coded as "increased overtime/decreased interaction" were significantly associated with the deterioration of mental well-being compared to those with "unchanged overtime/unchanged interaction" (odds ratio [OR] 2.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.59-2.89). Moreover, this association was relatively stronger among single-person households (OR 2.66, 95% CI 1.50-4.69). CONCLUSIONS: The negative combination of increasing overtime working hours and decreasing social interaction may have an impact on the deterioration of mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic, and this association was comparably strong among single-person households. In the pandemic, it is necessary to pay close attention to both overtime working hours and the presence of social interaction to address the mental well-being among employees.

AIM: The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan proposed a regulation of overtime work as a reform in work style. However, the regulation may deteriorate the quality of medical services due to the reduction in training time. Thus, the study aimed to reveal perceptions in terms of generation gaps in views on self-training and overtime work, among members of the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (JSOG). METHODS: A web-based, self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among members of the JSOG. In total, 1256 respondents were included in the analysis. Data were collected on age, sex, experience as a medical doctor, location of workplace, work style, the type of main workplace, and number of full-time doctors in the main workplace. The study examined the attitudes of the respondents toward overtime work and self-training. The respondents were categorized based on experience as a medical doctor. RESULTS: According to years of experience, 112 (8.9%), 226 (18.0%), 383 (30.5%), 535 (42.6%) doctors have been working for ≤5, 6-10, 11-19, and ≥ 20 years, respectively. Although 54.5% of doctors with ≤5 years of experience expected the regulation on working hours to improve the quality of medical services, those with ≥20 years of experience expressed potential deterioration. After adjusting for covariates, more years of experience were significantly related with the expectation of deterioration in the quality of medical services. CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed a generation gap in the views about self-training and overtime work among obstetricians and gynecologists in Japan.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the association between overtime work and the frequency of preventive dental visits among workers in Japan. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was completed by 14,847 daytime-workers. We used a logistic regression model stratified by sex and age and adjusted for marital status, occupation, education, and oral status to investigate the association between overtime work hours and the frequency of preventive dental visits. RESULTS: In total 1037 men (9.3%) and 511 women (13.9%) attended quarterly preventive dental visits, and 2672 men (23.9%) and 1165 women (31.8%) attended annual preventive dental visits. Overtime work was statistically significantly associated with quarterly preventive dental visits among men aged 50-59 years, with adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 0.73 (0.56-0.95), 0.75 (0.54-1.04), and 0.55 (0.34-0.90) for < 20, 20-39, and ≥40 h overtime/month, respectively. No such trends were observed for men aged < 50 years and women of all ages. Overtime work of < 20, 20-40, and ≥40 h overtime/month was statistically significantly associated with annual preventive dental visits among men aged 40-49 years (aOR [95%CI]: 0.76 [0.61-0.95], 0.84 [0.65-1.09], and 0.72 [0.51-1.00], respectively) and 50-59 years (aOR [95%CI]: 0.75 [0.61-0.91], 0.76 [0.59-0.97], and 0.63 [0.45-0.88], respectively). No such trends were observed in men < 40 years and women of all ages. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed associations between overtime and preventive dental visits among male workers aged in their 40s and 50s.
