RESUMO

Conversion and capture of carbon pollutants based on carbon dioxide to valuable green oil-field chemicals are target all over the world for controlling the global warming. The present article used new room temperature amphiphilic imidazolium ionic liquids with superior surface activity in the aqueous solutions to convert carbon dioxide gas to superior amphiphilic calcium carbonate nanoparticles. In this respect, tetra-cationic ionic liquids 2-(4-dodecyldimethylamino) phenyl)-1,3-bis (3-dodecyldimethylammnonio) propyl) bromide-1-H-imidazol-3-ium acetate and 2-(4-hexyldimethylamino) phenyl)-1,3-bis(3-hexcyldimethylammnonio) propyl) bromide-1 H-imidazol-3-ium acetate were prepared. Their chemical structures, thermal as well as their carbon dioxide absorption/ desorption characteristics were evaluated. They were used as solvent and capping agent to synthesize calcium carbonate nanoparticles with controlled crystalline lattice, sizes, thermal properties and spherical surface morphologies. The prepared calcium carbonate nanoparticles were used as additives for the commercial water based drilling mud to improve their filter lose and rheology. The data confirm that the lower concentrations of 2-(4-dodecyldimethylamino) phenyl)-1,3-bis (3-dodecyldimethylammnonio) propyl) bromide-1-H-imidazol-3-ium acetate achieved lower seawater filter lose and improved viscosities.

RESUMO

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to high value-added fuels or chemicals driven by the renewable energy is promising to alleviate global warming. However, the selective CO2 reduction to C2 products remains challenge. Cu-based catalyst with the specific Cu0 and Cu+ sites is important to generate C2 products. This work used nitrogen (N) to tune amounts of Cu0 and Cu+ sites in Cu2O catalysts and improve C2-product conversion. The controllable Cu0/Cu+ ratio of Cu2O catalyst from 0.16 to 15.19 was achieved by adjusting the N doping amount using NH3/Ar plasma treatment. The major theme of this work was clarifying a volcano curve of the ethylene Faraday efficiency as a function of the Cu0/Cu+ ratio. The optimal Cu0/Cu+ ratio was determined as 0.43 for selective electroreduction CO2 to ethylene. X-ray spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed to elucidate that the strong interaction between N and Cu increased the binding energy of NCu bond and stabilize Cu+, resulting in a 92.3% reduction in the potential energy change for *CO-*CO dimerization. This study is inspiring in designing high performance electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion.

RESUMO

The electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2ER) into formate presents a compelling solution for mitigating dependence on fossil energy and green utilization of CO2. Bismuth (Bi) has been gaining recognition as a promising catalyst material for the CO2ER to formate. The performance of Bi catalysts (named as Bi-V) can be significantly improved when they possess single metal atom vacancy. However, creating larger-sized metal atom vacancies within Bi catalysts remains a significant challenge. In this work, Bi nanosheets with dual VBi0 vacancy (Bi-DV) were synthesized utilizing in situ electrochemical transformation, using BiOBr nanosheets with triple vacancy associates (VBi″'VO··VBi″', VBi″' and VO·· denote the Bi3+ and O2- vacancy, respectively) as a template. The obtained Bi-DV achieved higher CO2ER activity than Bi-V, showing Faradaic efficiency for formate production of >92% from -0.9 to -1.2 VRHE in an H-type cell, and the partial current density of formate reached up to 755 mA/cm2 in a flow cell. The comprehensive characterizations coupled with density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the dual VBi0 vacancy on the surface of Bi-DV expedite the reaction kinetics toward CO2ER, by reducing the thermodynamic barrier of *OCHO intermediate formation. This research provides critical insights into the potential of large atom vacancies to enhance electrocatalysis performance.

RESUMO

Phase change absorbents based on amine chemical absorption for CO2 capture exhibit energy-saving potential, but generally suffer from difficulties in CO2 regeneration. Alcohol, characterized as a protic reagent with a low dielectric constant, can provide free protons to the rich phase of the absorbent, thereby facilitating CO2 regeneration. In this investigation, N-aminoethylpiperazine (AEP)/sulfolane/H2O was employed as the liquid-liquid phase change absorbent, with alcohol serving as the regulator. First, appropriate ion pair models were constructed to simulate the solvent effect of the CO2 products in different alcohol solutions. The results demonstrated that these ion pair products reached the maximum solvation-free energy (ΔEsolvation) in the rich phase containing ethanol (EtOH). Desorption experiment results validated that the inclusion of EtOH led to a maximum regeneration rate of 0.00763 mol/min, thus confirming EtOH's suitability as the preferred regulator. Quantum chemical calculations and 13C NMR characterization were performed, revealing that the addition of EtOH resulted in the partial conversion of AEP-carbamate (AEPCOO-) into a new product known as ethyl carbonate (C2H5OCOO-), which enhanced the regeneration reactivity. In addition, the decomposition paths of different CO2 products were simulated visually, and every reaction's activation energy (ΔEact) was calculated. Remarkably, the ΔEact for the decomposition of C2H5OCOO- (9.465 kJ/mol) was lower than that of the AEPCOO- (26.163 kJ/mol), implying that CO2 was more likely to be released. Finally, the regeneration energy consumption of the alcohol-regulated absorbent was estimated to be only 1.92 GJ/ton CO2, which had excellent energy-saving potential.

RESUMO

The non-aqueous solid-liquid biphasic solvent of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP)/piperazine (PZ)/dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether (DME) features a high CO2 absorption loading, favorable phase separation behavior and high regeneration efficiency. Different with the liquid-liquid phase change solvent, the reaction kinetics of CO2 capture into solid-liquid biphasic solvent was rarely studied. In the present work, the reaction kinetics of CO2 absorption into AMP/PZ/DME solid-liquid biphasic solvent was investigated into the double stirred kettle reactor. The absorption reaction followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model according to the zwitterion mechanism. The overall reaction rate constant (kov) and the enhancement factor (E) of CO2 absorption both increased with increasing temperature. The total mass transfer resistance of the absorbent decreased with increasing temperature and increased with increasing absorption loading, so the higher reaction temperature was conducive to the absorption, and the liquid phase mass transfer resistance was the main factor affecting the absorption rate.

RESUMO

China is the most important steel producer in the world, and its steel industry is one of the most carbon-intensive industries in China. Consequently, research on carbon emissions from the steel industry is crucial for China to achieve carbon neutrality and meet its sustainable global development goals. We constructed a carbon dioxide (CO2) emission model for China's iron and steel industry from a life cycle perspective, conducted an empirical analysis based on data from 2019, and calculated the CO2 emissions of the industry throughout its life cycle. Key emission reduction factors were identified using sensitivity analysis. The results demonstrated that the CO2 emission intensity of the steel industry was 2.33 ton CO2/ton, and the production and manufacturing stages were the main sources of CO2 emissions, accounting for 89.84% of the total steel life-cycle emissions. Notably, fossil fuel combustion had the highest sensitivity to steel CO2 emissions, with a sensitivity coefficient of 0.68, reducing the amount of fossil fuel combustion by 20% and carbon emissions by 13.60%. The sensitivities of power structure optimization and scrap consumption were similar, while that of the transportation structure adjustment was the lowest, with a sensitivity coefficient of less than 0.1. Given the current strategic goals of peak carbon and carbon neutrality, it is in the best interest of the Chinese government to actively promote energy-saving and low-carbon technologies, increase the ratio of scrap steel to steelmaking, and build a new power system.

RESUMO

Cost-effective CO2 adsorbents are gaining increasing attention as viable solutions for mitigating climate change. In this study, composites were synthesized by electrochemically combining the post-gasification residue of Macadamia nut shell with copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (CuBTC). Among the different composites synthesized, the ratio of 1:1 between biochar and CuBTC (B 1:1) demonstrated the highest CO2 adsorption capacity. Under controlled laboratory conditions (0°C, 1 bar, without the influence of ambient moisture or CO2 diffusion limitations), B 1:1 achieved a CO2 adsorption capacity of 9.8 mmol/g, while under industrial-like conditions (25°C, 1 bar, taking into account the impact of ambient moisture and CO2 diffusion limitations within a bed of adsorbent), it reached 6.2 mmol/g. These values surpassed those reported for various advanced CO2 adsorbents investigated in previous studies. The superior performance of the B 1:1 composite can be attributed to the optimization of the number of active sites, porosity, and the preservation of the full physical and chemical surface properties of both parent materials. Furthermore, the composite exhibited a notable CO2/N2 selectivity and improved stability under moisture conditions. These favorable characteristics make B 1:1 a promising candidate for industrial applications.

RESUMO

In the context of peaking carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality, development of feasible methods for converting CO2 into high value-added chemicals stands out as a hot subject. In this study, P[D+COO-][Br-][DBUH+], a series of novel heterogeneous dual-ionic poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) were synthesized readily from 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), bromo-substituted aliphatic acids, organic bases and divinylbenzene (DVB). The structures, compositions and morphologies were characterized or determined by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopes (SEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET), etc. Application of the P[D+COO-][Br-][DBUH+] series as catalysts in converting CO2 into cyclic carbonates showed that P[D+COO-][Br-][DBUH+]-2/1/0.6 was able to catalyze epiclorohydrin-CO2 cycloaddition the most efficiently. This afforded chloropropylene carbonate (CPC) in 98.4% yield with ≥ 99% selectivity in 24 hr under solvent- and additive-free conditions at atmospheric pressure. Reusability experiments showed that recycling of the catalyst 6 times only resulted in a slight decline in the catalytic performance. In addition, it could be used for the synthesis of a variety of differently substituted cyclic carbonates in good to excellent yields. Finally, key catalytic active sites were probed, and a reasonable mechanism was proposed accordingly. In summary, this work poses an efficient strategy for heterogenization of dual-ionic PILs and provides a mild and environmentally benign approach to the fixation and utilization of carbon dioxide.

RESUMO

The emission of heavy-duty vehicles has raised great concerns worldwide. The complex working and loading conditions, which may differ a lot from PEMS tests, raised new challenges to the supervision and control of emissions, especially during real-world applications. On-board diagnostics (OBD) technology with data exchange enabled and strengthened the monitoring of emissions from a large number of heavy-duty diesel vehicles. This paper presents an analysis of the OBD data collected from more than 800 city and highway heavy-duty vehicles in China using remote OBD data terminals. Real-world NOx and CO2 emissions of China-6 heavy-duty vehicles have been examined. The results showed that city heavy-duty vehicles had higher NOx emission levels, which was mostly due to longer time of low SCR temperatures below 180°C. The application of novel methods based on 3B-MAW also found that heavy-duty diesel vehicles tended to have high NOx emissions at idle. Also, little difference had been found in work-based CO2 emissions, and this may be due to no major difference were found in occupancies of hot running.

RESUMO

Li6ZnO4 was chemically modified by nickel addition, in order to develop different compositions of the solid solution Li6Zn1-xNixO4. These materials were evaluated bifunctionally; analyzing their CO2 capture performances, as well as on their catalytic properties for H2 production via dry reforming of methane (DRM). The crystal structures of Li6Zn1-xNixO4 solid solution samples were determined through X-ray diffraction, which confirmed the integration of nickel ions up to a concentration around 20 mol%, meanwhile beyond this value, a secondary phase was detected. These results were supported by XPS and TEM analyses. Then, dynamic and isothermal thermogravimetric analyses of CO2 capture revealed that Li6Zn1-xNixO4 solid solution samples exhibited good CO2 chemisorption efficiencies, similarly to the pristine Li6ZnO4 chemisorption trends observed. Moreover, a kinetic analysis of CO2 isothermal chemisorptions, using the Avrami-Erofeev model, evidenced an increment of the constant rates as a function of the Ni content. Since Ni2+ ions incorporation did not reduce the CO2 capture efficiency and kinetics, the catalytic properties of these materials were evaluated in the DRM process. Results demonstrated that nickel ions favored hydrogen (H2) production over the pristine Li6ZnO4 phase, despite a second H2 production reaction was determined, methane decomposition. Thereby, Li6Zn1-xNixO4 ceramics can be employed as bifunctional materials.

RESUMO

Catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to ethanol is a promising solution to address the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but many current catalysts face efficiency and cost challenges. Cobalt based catalysts are frequently examined due to their abundance, cost-efficiency, and effectiveness in the reaction, where managing the Co0 to Coδ+ ratio is essential. In this study, we adjusted support nature (Al2O3, MgO-MgAl2O4, and MgO) and reduction conditions to optimize this balance of Co0 to Coδ+ sites on the catalyst surface, enhancing ethanol production. The selectivity of ethanol reached 17.9% in a continuous flow fixed bed micro-reactor over 20 mol% Co@MgO-MgAl2O4 (CoMgAl) catalyst at 270 °C and 3.0 MPa, when reduced at 400 °C for 8 h. Characterisation results coupled with activity analysis confirmed that mild reduction condition (400 °C, 10% H2 balance N2, 8 h) with intermediate metal support interaction favoured the generation of partially reduced Co sites (Coδ+ and Co0 sites in single atom) over MgO-MgAl2O4 surface, which promoted ethanol synthesis by coupling of dissociative (CHx*)/non-dissociative (CHxO*) intermediates, as confirmed by density functional theory analysis. Additionally, the CoMgAl, affordably prepared through the coprecipitation method, offers a potential alternative for CO2 hydrogenation to yield valuable chemicals.

RESUMO

Carbon capture, utilization and storage is the vital technology for China to achieve the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. Microbial activities in situ are an indispensable part in the process of geological CO2 sequestration. Some microorganisms can convert CO2 into methane and organics as the resource for utilization or into carbonate to achieve long-term sequestration. These activities contribute to the stable storage of CO2 and even negative carbon emission. This paper focuses on the processes of bio-methanation, bio-liquefaction, and bio-precipitation that may be involved in CO2 sequestration in deep stratum and discusses the research progress in the bio-transformation pathways. Bio-methanation and bio-liquefaction can convert CO2 into methane or high-value organic compounds to realize resource reuse. The two technologies can be used alone or coupled to expand the application range of CO2 biotransformation. Bio-mineralization can convert CO2 into calcite by microorganism-induced carbonate precipitation, being a technology of great potential in fixing CO2 and limiting CO2 escape. At present, this field is still in the infancy stage, and there is an urgent need to establish and improve the theoretical and technical systems of CO2 in-situ biotransformation from transformation principle, influencing factors, conversion efficiency, economy, environmental protection, and technological conditions. Moreover, it can be combined with CCUS to establish a technical system integrating capture, transport, displace, storage, transfer, and exploit, so as to promote the value-added application of CCUS and the achievement of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

RESUMO

The utilization of C1 gases (CH4, CO2, and CO) for the production of oleochemicals applied in the energy and platform chemicals through microbial engineering has emerged as a promising approach to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease dependence on fossil fuel. C1 gas-utilizing microorganisms, such as methanotrophs, microalgae, and acetogens, are capable of converting C1 gases as the sole substrates for cell growth and oleochemical synthesis with different carbon-chain lengths, garnering considerable attention from both scientific community and industry field for sustainable biomanufacturing. This paper comprehensively reviews recent advancements in the development of engineered cell factories utilizing C1 gases for the production of oleochemicals, elucidating the key metabolic pathways of biosynthesis. Furthermore, this paper highlights the research progress and prospects in optimizing gene expression, metabolic pathway reconstruction, and fermentation conditions for efficient oleochemical production from C1 gases. This review provides valuable insights and guidance for the efficient utilization of C1 gases and the development of carbon cycling-based bioeconomy.

RESUMO

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for processes such as carbon dioxide (CO2) capture or its storage. In this work, the adsorption of CO2 and nitrogen (N2) in Co3(ndc)3(dabco) MOF (ndc: 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate; dabco: 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) is reported for the first time over the temperature range of 273-323 K and up to 35 bar. The adsorption isotherms are successfully described using the Langmuir isotherm model. The heats of adsorption for CO2 and N2, determined through the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, are 20-27 kJ/mol and 10-11 kJ/mol, respectively. The impact of using pressure and/or temperature swings on the CO2 working capacity is evaluated. If a flue gas with 15% CO2 is fed at 6 bar and 303 K and regenerated at 1 bar and 373 K, 1.58 moles of CO2 can be captured per kg of MOF. The analysis of the multicomponent adsorption of typical flue gas streams (15% CO2 balanced with N2), using the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST), shows that at 1 bar and 303 K, the CO2/N2 selectivity is 11.5. In summary, this work reports essential data for the design of adsorption-based processes for CO2 capture using a Co3(ndc)3(dabco) MOF, such as pressure swing adsorption (PSA).

RESUMO

Decompression sickness (DCS) with neurological disorders is the leading cause of major diving accidents treated in hyperbaric chambers. Exposure to high levels of CO2 during diving is a safety concern for occupational groups at risk of DCS. However, the effects of prior exposure to CO2 have never been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of CO2 breathing prior to a provocative dive on the occurrence of DCS in mice. Fifty mice were exposed to a maximum CO2 concentration of 70 hPa, i.e., 7% at atmospheric pressure, for one hour at atmospheric pressure. Another 50 mice breathing air under similar conditions served as controls. In the AIR group (control), 22 out of 50 mice showed post-dive symptoms compared to 44 out of 50 in the CO2 group (p < 0.001). We found that CO2 breathing is associated with a decrease in body temperature in mice and that CO2 exposure dramatically increases the incidence of DCS (p < 0.001). More unexpectedly, it appears that the lower temperature of the animals even before exposure to the accident-prone protocol leads to an unfavorable prognosis (p = 0.046). This study also suggests that the composition of the microbiota may influence thermogenesis and thus accidentology. Depending on prior exposure, some of the bacterial genera identified in this work could be perceived as beneficial or pathogenic.

RESUMO

The utilization of biomass ash in sustainable agriculture and increasing its fertilizing efficiency by biological agents, potentially sequestering CO2, have become important issues for the global economy. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effects of ash from sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) and Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) biomass, a biogas plant digestate, and a Spirodela polyrhiza extract, acting alone or synergistically, on soil fertility and the development, health and physiological properties of sorghum plants. The results show novel information concerning differences in the composition and impact of ash, depending on its origin, soil properties and sorghum plant development. Sorghum ash was more effective than that from Jerusalem artichoke. Ash used alone and preferably acting synergistically with the digestate and Spirodela polyrhiza extract greatly increased soil fertility and the growth, biomass yield and health of sorghum plants. These improvements were associated with an increased chlorophyll content in leaves, better gas exchange (photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance), greater enzyme activity (acid and alkaline phosphatase, RNase, and total dehydrogenase), and a higher biomass energy value. The developed treatments improved environmental conditions by replacing synthetic fertilizers, increasing the sequestration of CO2, solving the ash storage problem, reducing the need for pesticides, and enabling a closed circulation of nutrients between plant and soil, maintaining high soil fertility.

RESUMO

Chemolithoautotrophic Hydrogenovibrio are ubiquitous and abundant at hydrothermal vents. They can oxidize sulfur, hydrogen, or iron, but none are known to use all three energy sources. This ability though would be advantageous in vents hallmarked by highly dynamic environmental conditions. We isolated three Hydrogenovibrio strains from vents along the Indian Ridge, which grow on all three electron donors. We present transcriptomic data from strains grown on iron, hydrogen, or thiosulfate with respective oxidation and autotrophic carbon dioxide (CO2) fixation rates, RubisCO activity, SEM, and EDX. Maximum estimates of one strain's oxidation potential were 10, 24, and 952 mmol for iron, hydrogen, and thiosulfate oxidation and 0.3, 1, and 84 mmol CO2 fixation, respectively, per vent per hour indicating their relevance for element cycling in-situ. Several genes were up- or downregulated depending on the inorganic electron donor provided. Although no known genes of iron-oxidation were detected, upregulated transcripts suggested iron-acquisition and so far unknown iron-oxidation-pathways.

RESUMO

China's large-scale tree planting programs are critical for achieving its carbon neutrality by 2060, but determining where and how to plant trees for maximum carbon sequestration has not been rigorously assessed. Here, we developed a comprehensive machine learning framework that integrates diverse environmental variables to quantify tree growth suitability and its relationship with tree numbers. Then, their correlations with biomass carbon stocks were robustly established. Carbon sink potentials were mapped in distinct tree-planting scenarios. Under one of them aligned with China's ecosystem management policy, 44.7 billion trees could be planted, increasing forest stock by 9.6 ± 0.8 billion m³ and sequestering 5.9 ± 0.5 PgC equivalent to double China's 2020 industrial CO2 emissions. We found that tree densification within existing forests is an economically viable and effective strategy and so it should be a priority in future large-scale planting programs.
