RESUMO

History provides wonderful insights into how society develops, providing innumerable lessons that can be used as individuals and institutions move into the future. The history of medicine provides particular value, yet it is so often overlooked by the present, society taking for granted what has often been a tremendous struggle to achieve. This overview of the history of paediatric surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand provides amazing insights into what has been achieved in a period spanning three centuries.

RESUMO

Lam Qua, a Chinese artist who painted in the Western style, was hired by American ophthalmologist and missionary Peter Parker to paint Parker's Chinese patients. Most of Lam Qua's paintings depict patients with rather large tumors located in various areas across the body; there are a few that are also of dermatologic interest. This contribution explores Lam Qua's paintings that depict a cutaneous horn, gangrenous necrosis, and an ulcerating tumor.

RESUMO

José Maria Vargas, (1786-1854), who was born on March 10, 1796, graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the Central University of Venezuela in 1808. He was subsequently imprisoned in 1813 by the Spanish authorities for his independence activities. When finally freed, he traveled to Edinburgh for postgraduate medical training and became the first Venezuelan to earn a Fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He worked afterward in medicine, surgery, botany, and chemistry, practicing in Scotland, France, and Puerto Rico. Upon his return to Venezuela in 1825 from 1827 to 1829, he became Professor of Surgery and later, President (Rector) of the Central University of Venezuela. He was elected the second president of newly independent Venezuela serving from 1835 to 1836 and carried out his tasks with honor and dignity, even after surviving a coup d'état. Finally, he resigned his position as president and returned to the practice of medicine and his teaching duties. He reasoned and wrote a beautiful differential diagnosis in a case supposedly of pellagra, but actually of erythema marginatum. Dr Vargas died in New York on July 13, 1854, after a long illness.

RESUMO

The formation of the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgery (WOFAPS) was an important unifying force in the emergence of pediatric surgery as a distinct specialty. Beginning with the formation of several national societies in the early '60s, an early, multinational effort was created. This was in large part fostered by the International Pediatric Association (IPA), which lent logistical support from the medical pediatric community to the pediatric surgeons. In 2001, the mission of the Federation was formalized to focus on the development and education of surgeons serving children, in all parts of the world. This was articulated in the famous Kyoto Declaration of Pediatric Surgery: "Every infant and child who suffers from an illness or disease has the right to be treated in an environment devoted to their care by a pediatric medical or surgical specialist". This vision was unique at the time and foreshadowed the major increase in advocacy activity which has emerged in recent years. While the mission has evolved with time, the present organization continues to hold true to the guiding principles of the original founders and seeks to improve the quality of "Surgical Care for the child, no matter where they live". Education and collaboration across borders underpins the organization's endeavors.

RESUMO

History is by nature a retrospective subject, there usually being an interval between any event, a review or impact of the subject being considered. This NPSA Historian's paper, takes a long and quick historical view of influences that fostered changes resulting in the current state of affairs in the field of medicine and medical care. The fields of medicine and surgery, are undergoing rapid changes as a result of technological and other advances that are making tomorrow's medical history seemingly happening yesterday. Prospectively, the impact of current change and its rapidity has the potential to radically change the future practice of the art and craft of our profession.

RESUMO

The present dissertation was submitted in 1713 at the University of Halle as part of the requirements to obtain the "licentiat". The author was Johann Michael Eisenbarth, the oldest son of the well-known physician Johann Andreas Eisenbarth. The dissertation delivers an overview over the history of the cystotomy, leading back to antiquity. In sixty paragraphs, the author dealt with different issues, such as diagnosis, preparation, and aftercare of patients with urinary bladder stones. However, the center of the thesis is the critical evaluation of all surgical methods known three hundred years ago.

RESUMO

The influence of Arab Medicine on Western science has recently been challenged. Using the example of two Flemish surgeons, Jan Yperman in the early 14th and Thomas Fijens in the late 16th century, this article argues that Arab physicians and surgeons have imposed a long lasting influence on the surgical practitioners in the Low Countries.

RESUMO

From the advent of the use of anaesthesia during surgery through the Second World War, confusion and competition over who should administer the technology - doctors or nurses - dominated gendered discussions of professional boundaries. Using information about practice in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France in this period, we find vastly different outcomes for nurse-administered anaesthesia. Differences in perceptions regarding the gendered nature of this technology and its related level of prestige largely determined who could practice it. When administering anaesthesia carried low prestige and was viewed as non-technical, it fell under the purview of women's work in medicine, that is, nursing. When the same technology gained prestige and became perceived as a technical, medical skill, doctors associated it with their masculine professional identity and worked to exclude nurses from administering anaesthesia.

Professor Antoni Jurasz was one of the most eminent Polish surgeons in the period between the two World Wars. He founded the Polish School of Medicine at the University of Edinburgh and the Polish Paderewski Hospital in Edinburgh in 1941. Having served in the Prussian Army he was also a co-founder of the military health service of the Polish Armed Forces. He was an educator of great format and a fierce patriot. This is an opportunity to remember a man and surgeon who devoted the last years of his life to the cause of closer rapprochement between nations in the name of well-conceived service to Poland and to humanity. The establishment of a Polish School of Medicine within the framework of Edinburgh University is a magnificent example of international academic collaboration. Extensive research was undertaken to collect the literature and documents in Polish, German and British libraries and archives in order to prepare this study.
