RESUMO

Nurses are the largest group of Polish medical staff. There are currently approximately 230,000 nurses employed in Poland. There is a statutory profession for many years. Nurses provide health services on the basis of a medical order or on their own. As a result of changes in the law, the scope of their professional competences has been increasing for several years, including to independently administer medicines and issue prescriptions. The purpose of the article is to present and analyze legal norms determining the status of a nurse in the Polish health care system. In addition, the definition of the statutory principles of cooperation between doctors and nurses. The analysis shows that changes in law in recent years have significantly influenced the increase in the role of nurses in the health care system and they are also relevant to the practice of the medical profession.

Objetivo: Identificar, na literatura científica, as atividades do enfermeiro que atua no centro de material e esterilização. Método: Trata-se de revisão integrativa da literatura, com busca nas bases de dados Scopus, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (Lilacs), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed e Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS). Os descritores utilizados foram esterilização/sterilization, competência profissional/professional competence e central supply hospital associados às palavras-chave enfermeiro/nurse e central sterile supply. Encontraram-se 1.330 artigos, dos quais 11 foram selecionados para compor a amostra. Resultados: Evidenciaram-se pontos centrais referentes ao trabalho do enfermeiro, como gerenciamento do setor e desenvolvimento de atividades educativas, além dos desafios enfrentados, como não reconhecimento e desvalorização, falta de preparo e de educação permanente, riscos ocupacionais, carga horária de trabalho excessiva, má remuneração e desgastes físico e mental. Conclusão: Foi possível contextualizar e compreender as atividades e os principais desafios delas decorrentes no desenvolvimento do trabalho do enfermeiro no centro de material e esterilização, contribuindo, dessa forma, para a divulgação, o reconhecimento e a reflexão a respeito da referida temática.


Objective: To identify in the scientific literature the activities of nurses who work in the sterile processing department. Method: This is an integrative literature review performed by searching the databases Scopus, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed, and Virtual Health Library (VHL). The descriptors used were esterilização/sterilization, competência profissional/professional competence, and central supply hospital associated with the keywords enfermeiro/nurse and central sterile supply. We found 1,330 articles and selected 11 of them to compose the sample. Results: Key aspects related to nurses' work stood out, such as sector management and development of educational activities, as well as the challenges faced by these professionals, including nonrecognition and underappreciation, lack of preparation and continuing education, occupational risks, excessive workload, low wages, and physical and mental exhaustion. Conclusion: We could contextualize and understand the activities and their main resulting challenges related to the development of nurses' work in the sterile processing department, thus contributing to the dissemination, recognition, and reflection on this theme.


Objetivo: Identificar, en la literatura científica, las actividades de enfermeros que trabajan en el Centro de Material y Esterilización. Método: Esta es una revisión de literatura integradora, que busca en las bases de datos SCOPUS, Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe en Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS); Biblioteca científica en línea electrónica (SCIELO), PubMed y biblioteca virtual de la salud (BVS). Los descriptores utilizados fueron esterilización/sterilization, competencia profesional/professional competence, asociados a las palabras clave enfermeiro/nurse y centro de suministros estériles/central sterile supply. Se encontraron 1.330 artículos, de los cuales 11 fueron seleccionados para componer la muestra. Resultados: se evidenciaron puntos centrales relacionados con el trabajo de la enfermera, como la gestión del sector y el desarrollo de actividades educativas, además de los desafíos enfrentados, como la falta de reconocimiento y apreciación, la falta de preparación y educación permanente, los riesgos laborales, la carga de trabajo excesiva, mal pago y agotamiento físico y mental. Conclusión: fue posible contextualizar y comprender las actividades y los principales desafíos derivados de ellas en el desarrollo del trabajo de la enfermera en el centro de materiales, contribuyendo así a la difusión, reconocimiento y reflexión sobre este tema.

RESUMO

Australian and international nursing regulators have specific requirements for continuing competence and the professional, safe practice of nurses and midwives. Requirements can dictate duration of practice, time away from/recency of practice, revalidation policies, and time between study program completion and practice commencement. Requirements vary between contexts and are periodically updated. To identify and examine Australian and international evidence for best regulatory practices relating to recency and the maintenance of professional competence among nurses and midwives, a scoping review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews will be undertaken. This protocol details the scope, inclusion criteria, and methodology that will guide the scoping review, which will inform an update to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's Registration Standard: Recency of Practice.

For almost a century now, the concern of universities about student satisfaction with teaching quality has been increasing. A literature review has enabled the attributes of quality teaching to be classified into three main types: pedagogical, generic, and disciplinary. The aim of this paper is to identify the variables that, in the opinion of students, most influence student satisfaction regarding teaching quality. A total of 476 undergraduate students participated from Business Administration and Management of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). An ad hoc questionnaire was used to assess student satisfaction with teaching. Parametric (Logistic Regression Analysis) and non-parametric (Decision Tree) models were used. Our data indicate that if the professor explains the subject clearly, is concerned to find out whether the explanations have been understood, and carefully prepares the classes; the teaching-quality assessment will be very satisfactory. The identification of the attributes of quality teaching will enable universities to draw up initial and ongoing training plans for their teaching staff, bearing in mind the crucial role played by generic, pedagogical, and disciplinary competences in professor-student interaction


Desde hace casi un siglo la preocupación de las universidades sobre la satisfacción de los estudiantes con la calidad de la docencia recibida se ha ido incrementando. La revisión de la literatura permite clasificar los atributos de una docencia de calidad en tres grandes tipos de competencias: pedagógicas, genéricas y disciplinares. El objetivo de este trabajo es señalar las variables, que a juicio de los estudiantes, más influyen en la satisfacción del alumnado con la calidad de la docencia. Los participantes fueron 476 estudiantes del grado de Administración y Dirección de Empresas de la Universidad Castilla La Mancha. Se utilizó un cuestionario construido ad hoc para valorar la satisfacción de los estudiantes con la docencia. Se utilizaron pruebas paramétricas (Análisis de Regresión Logística) y no paramétricas (árbol de decisión). Nuestros datos indican que si el profesor explica con claridad, se preocupa por averiguar si los conceptos explicados han sido entendidos y prepara sus clases la valoración sobre la calidad de su docencia será muy satisfactoria. El identificar los atributos de una docencia de calidad permitirá a las universidades elaborar planes de formación inicial y permanente de su profesorado teniendo presente el papel crucial que juegan las competencias genéricas, pedagógicas y disciplinares en la interacción profesor-estudiante

OBJECTIVE: The Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act calls for establishing a competency-based training program to train public health practitioners. To inform such training, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Association of Schools of Public Health managed groups of experts to produce a competency model which could function as a national standard of behaviorally based, observable skills for the public health workforce to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from all hazards. DESIGN: A systematic review of existing competency models generated a competency model of proposed domains and competencies. PARTICIPANTS: National stakeholders were engaged to obtain consensus through a three-stage Delphi-like process. RESULTS: The Delphi-like process achieved 84 percent, 82 percent, and 79 percent response rates in its three stages. Three hundred sixty six unique individuals responded to the three-round process, with 45 percent (n = 166) responding to all three rounds. The resulting competency model features 18 competencies within four core learning domains targeted at midlevel public health workers. CONCLUSIONS: Practitioners and academics have adopted the Public Health Preparedness and Response Core Competency Model, some of whom have formed workgroups to develop curricula based on the model. Efforts will be needed to develop evaluation materials for training and education programs to refine the model as well as for future training and education initiatives.

The qualitative functioning of any medical institution depends on both professional competence of its staff and document management. The contemporary society is moving towards e-document management. The topicality of investigation stems from necessity to give scientific rationale and put into practice modern information systems and electronic technologies in the activities of head nurses. The article considers realization issues of the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of May 7, 2018 No. 204 "On national goals and strategic objectives of the development of the Russian Federation for the period until 2024". Among other "national development goals of the Russian Federation for the period until 2024, the Decree sets the goal to ensure the accelerated digital enabling in the economy and social sphere". Therefore, it is no coincidence that the Federal project "Creating a single digital circuit in health care based on unified state health information system" takes central position in the National Health Care Project. The study used content analysis, expert judgment, sociological and statistical methods. The introduction of the AWP SMS program into professional activities of senior medical nurses allows optimizing documents processing. Its effectiveness was evaluated using mathematical modeling methodology.

BACKGROUND: Licensure and registration are the traditional approaches to ensure minimally acceptable standards of care for practice. However, due to advances in medical technology and changes in clinical practice, the knowledge and skills obtained from basic education and training may rapidly become out of date. There is no mandated, structured and ongoing mechanism to assess all doctors' competence in Hong Kong. This paper assessed doctors' perceived needs for continuous professional development, and to identify facilitators and barriers that are likely to influence the implementation of compulsory continuous professional development for maintaining professional competence and ensuring patient safety. METHODS: An explanatory sequential mixed method design with two distinct interactive phases was adopted comprising a postal self-administered questionnaire survey among a random sample of 2,459 of doctors (Phase 1), followed by individual interviews of a stratified sample of 30 questionnaire respondents for the subsequent qualitative analysis (Phase 2). RESULTS: The majority of doctors (over 90%) agreed the importance of continuous professional development to update knowledge and skills. However, just 30.7% of non-specialists compared with 65.4% of specialists agreed it would be desirable for continuous professional development to be a requirement for renewal of licenses. A relatively higher percentage of non-specialists compared with specialists reported barriers to participation such as accessibility, availability and relevance of the content of the programmes. Facilitators for uptake included more convenient schedule and location, relevant content, and incentives for participation such as making this a pre-condition for enrolling in government-funded services. CONCLUSIONS: To address the needs of individual doctors, the spheres of practice, personal preferences and learning styles should be considered in deciding the content and processes of continuous professional development. Flexibility is also an important principle. A learning model, incentives for participation and a compliance strategy (instead of deterrence) could be effective strategy for continuous professional development.

OBJECTIVE: This quality improvement initiative sought to develop a proactive integrated system approach to advance care planning (ACP) through leadership and colleague engagement. BACKGROUND: Nurse leaders have the capacity to influence the professional competencies of care teams in ACP. Nurse leaders were educated on the importance of ACP, national quality metrics, resources for staff education, and ways to integrate ACP into workflows based on a population management model. METHODS: The project design is a prospective, mixed method design. RESULTS: Nurse leader participants demonstrated a significant increase in knowledge of the importance of ACP and evidence-based models to increase staff engagement and competency. CONCLUSIONS: Study supports nurse leader interventions, promoted engagement of proactive ACP to honor patient choice, and aligns with the mission and vision of one of the largest national Catholic healthcare organizations of being a trusted partner for life.

BACKGROUND: Generic medicines are similar to innovator medicine in terms of safety, quality, efficacy, dosage form, strength, and route of administration. They have the same therapeutic use to innovator medicines and available at a far lower price. However, health professionals' poor knowledge and attitude may limit its utilization. The present study aimed at assessing the knowledge, attitude, and practice of pharmacy professionals towards generic medicines in Harar city, Eastern Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among community pharmacists in Harar city. A self-administered thirty-three item questionnaire on Knowledge, attitude, and practice of community pharmacists was utilized. Logistic regression analysis was performed to predict the determinants of knowledge and attitude of pharmacists. An odds ratio at 95% confidence interval along with a p-value < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Among 80 community pharmacists' approached, 74 completed the survey, providing a response rate of 92.5%. Sixty-seven percent of the respondents knew that generic drugs are bioequivalent to brand drugs and claimed generic medicines are cheaper (86.5%). Nearly half (48.6%) of participants believe that generic medicines are less effective and slower in the onset of action (58.1%). More than half (54.1%) of study participants revealed their lack of belief in generic medicine as a factor hindering the selection and dispensing of generic medicines. In multivariate logistic regression, experience in community pharmacy practice (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR = 2.18, 95%CI: 1.21-63.1) and Sex (AOR = 3.88, 95%CI: 2.12-39.62) were significantly associated with knowledge and attitude toward generic medicines, respectively. CONCLUSION: The current study revealed that there is a gap in the knowledge and attitude of community pharmacists towards generic and brand drugs. More than averages of the respondents have known the concept of generic medicine including their right to perform generic substitution and had a positive attitude toward generics. Female pharmacists were more likely to have a positive attitude and the overall knowledge was higher in those who have more than 5 years of work experience.

Objetivo: Descrever a percepção de enfermeiros acerca das competências gerenciais no contexto hospitalar. Método: Estudo descritivo realizado em um hospital no noroeste do Paraná, com dados coletados junto a 25 enfermeiros. Utilizou-se instrumento composto por questões de caracterização sociodemográfica e voltadas à percepção acerca da importância das competências gerenciais na prática do enfermeiro. As respostas foram dispostas em escala do tipo Likert, em que, quanto maior o escore mais indispensável era considerada a competência. Os dados foram analisados utilizando estatística descritiva. Resultados: 76% dos participantes eram do sexo feminino, com idade media de 35 anos. O domínio liderança obteve escore de 44,84 (DP±0,8), comunicação de 14,52 (DP±1,32), tomada de decisão de 16,12 (DP±3,2) e o planejamento e organização de 17,24 (DP±1,56). Todos os domínios obtiveram pontuação próxima ao escore máximo. Conclusão: Os enfermeiros percebem como indispensáveis as competências gerenciais determinadas para a formação, em sua prática profissional no contexto hospitalar. (AU)


Objective: To describe the perception of nursesabout managerial competencies in the hospital context. Method: A descriptive study performed in a hospital in the northwest of Paraná, Brazil, with data collected from 25 nurses. It was used an instrument composed of questions of sociodemographic characterization and focused on the perception about the importance of managerial competences in nurses' practice, being they leadership, communication, decision making and planning and organization. The answers were arranged in a Likert scale, in which the higher the score, the more indispensable the competence was considered. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: 76% of the participants were female, with a mean age of 35 years. The leadership domain obtained a score of 44.84 (SD ± 0.8), communication of 14.52 (SD ± 1.32), decision making of 16.12 (SD ± 3.2) and planning and organization of 17.24 (SD ± 1.56). All domains scored near the maximum score. Conclusion: Nurses perceive as indispensable the managerial competences determined for the training, in their professional practice in the hospital context. Todos los dominios obtuvieron una puntuación cercana a la puntuación máxima. Traçar o perfil do enfermeiro de unidades ambulatoriais e hospitalares oncológicas no estado de Sergipe e analisar seu nível de satisfação no trabalho em oncologia. Metodologia: Estudo exploratório, transversal, quantitativo, realizado com 26 enfermeiras que atuam em oncologia em Sergipe. Realizadas entrevistas sobre os aspectos sociodemográficos, acadêmicos, profissionais e avaliação do nível de satisfação profissional, mediante questionário S20/23, no período de julho/dezembro de 2017. Resultados: Todas do sexo feminino, média de 35 anos de idade, maioria sem especialização na área oncológica. Quanto à satisfação profissional global, verificou-se que 45% são parcialmente satisfeitas e 30% totalmente satisfeitas para os fatores abordados, com escore médio de satisfação de 4,22. Conclusão: Ficou evidente a falta de qualificação especializada, predomínio da satisfação no trabalho quanto ao relacionamento com os pacientes. Espera-se que os gestores percebam à importância de um olhar para a saúde e subjetividade de enfermeiros oncológicos para melhoria da assistência. (AU)


Objective: To profile the nurse of oncology outpatient and hospital units in the state of Sergipe and analyze their level of job satisfaction in oncology. Method: Exploratory, cross-sectional, quantitative study conducted with 26 nurses working in oncology in Sergipe. Interviews were conducted on sociodemographic, academic, and professional aspects and assessment of the level of job satisfaction, using the S20 / 23 questionnaire, in July / December 2017. Results: All females, average 35 years old, mostly without specialization. in the cancer area. Regarding overall job satisfaction, it was found that 45% are partially satisfied and 30% fully satisfied for the factors addressed, with an average satisfaction score of 4.22. Conclusion: It was evident the lack of specialized qualification, predominance of job satisfaction regarding the relationship with patients. It is expected that managers realize the importance of a look at the health and subjectivity of cancer nurses to improve care. (AU)


Objetivo: perfilar a la enfermera de oncología ambulatoria y unidades hospitalarias en el estado de Sergipe y analizar su nivel de satisfacción laboral en oncología. OBJECTIVE: This job analysis was conducted to compare, assess and refine the competencies of the clinical research data management profession. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two questionnaires were administered in 2015 and 2018 to collect information from data managers on professional competencies, types of data managed, types of studies supported, and necessary foundational knowledge. RESULTS: In 2018 survey, 67 professional competencies were identified. Job tasks differed between early- to mid-career and mid- to late-career practitioners. A large variation in the types of studies conducted and variation in the data managed by the participants was observed. DISCUSSION: Clinical research data managers managed different types of data with variety of research settings, which indicated a need for training in methods and concepts that could be applied across therapeutic areas and types of data. CONCLUSION: The competency survey reported here serves as the foundation for the upcoming revision of the Certified Clinical Data Manager (CCDMTM) exam.

Inductive Teaching Method (ITM) promotes effective learning in technological education (Felder & Silverman, 1988). Students prefer ITM more as it makes the subject easily understandable (Goltermann, 2011). The ITM motivates the students to actively participate in class activities and therefore could be considered a better approach to teach computer programming. There has been little research on implementing ITM in computer science courses despite its potential to improve effective learning. In this research, an existing computer programming lab course is taught using a traditional Deductive Teaching Method (DTM). The course is redesigned and taught by adopting the ITM instead. Furthermore, a comprehensive plan has been devised to deliver the course content in computer labs. The course was evaluated in an experiment consisting of 81 undergraduate students. The students in the Experimental Group (EG) (N = 45) were taught using the redesigned ITM course, whereas the students in the Control Group (CG) (N = 36) were taught using the DTM course. The performance of both groups was compared in terms of the marks obtained by them. A pre-test conducted to compare pre-course mathematical and analytical abilities showed that CG was better in analytical reasoning with no significant differences in mathematical abilities. Three post-tests were used to evaluate the groups theoretical and practical competence in programming and showed EG improved performance with large, medium, and small effect sizes as compared to CG. The results of this research could help computer programming educators to implement inductive strategies that could improve the learning of the computer programming.

OBJECTIVES: Faculty development programs (FDPs) foster learning communities and enhance professional identity formation for medical educators. Competency-based frameworks for faculty development drive skill development across clinical practice, teaching, and scholarship domains. The aims of this study are to outline the context, content, and evolution of a novel FDP; map the individual conferences that make up the FDP to established faculty development competencies; identify steps to implement similar programming; and demonstrate outcomes to date. METHODS: The FDP consists of four, 1-hour-long conferences held weekly on a rotating basis since 2007 at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine: Academy of Master Educators, Medical Education Research, Medical Education Journal Club, and Medical Education Research Methods and Innovative Design conference. Authors outline the relation of each of these four conferences to faculty development competencies and describe early outcomes for each conference over four consecutive academic years from 2014 to 2018. Participants include attendees and presenters in four consecutive academic years from 2014 to 2018. RESULTS: The well-attended FDP meets all established competencies for educator faculty. Presenters and attendees were diverse in terms of academic rank and represented a breadth of clinical and basic science specialties. CONCLUSIONS: This integrated FDP fosters a community of medical educators and develops faculty skills across established medical educator competencies.

Background: Early intervention will help children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to attain early learning reinforcement. This study focuses on exploring the ability of preschool teachers to identify children with ASD and their referral decision-making process. Method: This is a mixed-method study (qualitative and quantitative methods) involving 20 respondents. The qualitative study is based on an open question case study, while the quantitative study consists of questionnaire with demographic variables to identify the effect of the demographic variables on the preschool teachers' ability to identify children with ASD. Sample: The sample was selected via convenience sampling among mainstream preschool teachers. The data was analyzed using SPSS software and thematic analysis. Results: The findings show that preschool teachers did not have skills at identifying children with ASD, and the majority of them labelled children with ASD as spoilt or hyperactive children. They also viewed children with ASD as having other disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or communication disorders such as introversion. Moreover, preschool teachers expressed that the reason for the child's behaviour could be due to the parents' inability to properly educate their child. Additionally, the demographic variables of the preschool teachers, such as age, education level and teaching experience, were found not to affect their ASD identification skills. Conclusion: Preschool teachers need to improve their skills in identifying ASD among children via training.

Traditionally in sporting tasks, expertise has been thought of as the attainment of near flawless technical abilities. While contemporary views have become more holistic in nature, in certain sporting domains it is still not clear what exactly encapsulates expertise. This study sought to further understand the crucial and defining characteristics of cricket batting; a complex and difficult perceptual-motor skill with minimal error tolerance and severe time constraints. Eight elite cricket batting coaches, who themselves were former international or state level batsmen, were interviewed to identify characteristics of cricket batting expertise. From this, a conceptual model was developed in relation to an expert within their performance environment. This model highlights several key factors experts possess beyond just technical proficiency, such as self-awareness of their technical and tactical strengths in relation to the situation of the game; self-regulatory behaviours to problem solve performance challenges in-game; and psychological strategies such as between-ball routines to manage cognitions and emotions. The conceptual model of batting expertise described in this paper is designed to introduce an order to how these various skills, possessed by an expert batter, interact within the performance environment to interpret expert performance.
