RESUMO

This is a dialogue between two PhD nurses who have served as chief nursing officers; one is now in academia wondering about current scholarly endeavors in practice. Topics addressed include working relationships at the executive level, the chief nursing officer that is PhD prepared, theory in practice, scrambling to honor nursing's pact with society during the COVID-19 pandemic, and some recommendations for academia.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantify faculty and student perceptions of scholarly activities for doctor of nursing practice (DNP) and PhD leaders. BACKGROUND: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing describes DNP as a practice-focused degree and PhD as a research-focused degree. In 2016, the Council on Graduate Education for Administration in Nursing (now Association for Leadership Science in Nursing) published in the Journal of Nursing Administration sample practice objectives for DNP and research objectives for PhD leaders. METHODS: Using the published objectives, we surveyed faculty and students to quantify congruence with the publication and consistency within groups. The data informed intraprofessional education constructed using action research. RESULTS: There was low congruence between faculty and student responses with the article. PhD faculty had the least, and PhD students, the greatest, consistency in survey responses. CONCLUSIONS: Confusion exists within our faculty and students around differentiating PhD and DNP scholarly activities. Data supported need to clarify scholarly role boundaries through intraprofessional education.

RESUMO

The year 2019 saw nursing science become an official discipline in France, following the academization process initiated in 2009. Although nurses did not wait for this breakthrough to embark on doctoral-level courses, the absence of a dedicated academic nursing pathway has meant that it has not been possible to gain an overall picture of the theses written by nurses in French universities. The aim of this contribution is to compile an inventory of these theses by identifying the disciplinary fields in which the nurses defended them, as well as the preferred methodological approaches adopted. Following a computerized search using various databases, 132 theses were identified spanning a forty-year period, with a significant increase over the last ten years. Eighty-four percent of these doctoral theses were defended in the disciplines of humanities and social sciences, with a very large proportion in education sciences. Qualitative methods were preferred, with investigations that used interviews. The number of theses in the biological and health sciences has seen a recent increase. This inventory provides a benchmark for the doctoral output of nurses at a pivotal point in their professional history.

RESUMO

Registered nurses (RNs) are leaving the bedside to become advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Failure to successfully transition APRNs into clinical practice represents a substantial financial burden to healthcare organizations. Organizations can use the standards of the Magnet Recognition Program to help support, develop, and transition APRNs into their advanced practice role.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program at The Ohio State University transitioned from a traditional face-to-face program to a distance-enhanced hybrid model providing course content online with campus visits for procedural skills and simulation in 2017. Although the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic necessitated cancellation of all in-person events across the university, the neonatal nurse practitioner students' learning needs remained the same. METHOD: The onsite experience was redesigned for virtual delivery. Procedural content was accomplished through student-led small-group collaborative critical thinking activities surrounding procedural complications, and other faculty-led scenario discussions. RESULTS: Students collaborated for a Complications Rounds activity (1-day) that promoted learning about procedural skills from a global perspective including safe techniques, monitoring, risks, and troubleshooting complications. CONCLUSION: Procedural content can be achieved when in-person learning is not possible. The Complications Rounds approach can mitigate delays or gaps in practical experiences. Examining complications in-depth increases preparedness, promoting greater awareness of harm prevention when these present in future practice. [J Nurs Educ. 2020;59(12):692-696.].

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic closed university campuses across the country. Nurse educators were challenged to develop innovative solutions for students to complete course requirements. The on-campus poster session used by a college of nursing as a scholarly forum for dissemination of all Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student final projects was cancelled due to the pandemic. METHOD: Nurse educators developed and implemented an interactive, synchronous virtual session using the Zoom Video Communications platform. RESULTS: Twelve virtual sessions were held, and 73 students presented DNP project posters. More than 150 students and faculty attended the virtual poster sessions. Students and faculty had positive feedback regarding the virtual format. Student presentations were academically rigorous, and audiences engaged in robust discussion with DNP students. CONCLUSION: The virtual platform was successfully used for an interactive presentation by DNP student and nursing faculty participants. This format may be especially valuable for use of scholarship dissemination by distance learning programs. [J Nurs Educ. 2020;59(12):697-700.].

RESUMO

New graduate registered nurses (NGRNs) can become competent in providing acute care hemodialysis for complex medical and critically ill patients. As the renal patient population grows, nephrology nursing will need RNs prepared to provide high-quality, patient-centered care through evidence-based practice. This article describes the successful development and implementation of a comprehensive Nephrology Nurse Residency Program at Emory University Hospital. Utilizing Benner's Novice to Expert theory, this project evaluated providing NGRNs with the essential residency experiences to become nephrology nurses who are competent in the provision of acute care hemodialysis, with the ability to care for medically complex and critically ill patients. It is recommended that this program be offered at health care institutions that provide acute dialysis services.

ABSTRACT Background: nursing professionals take part in the development of patterns, conceptual frameworks and theories to guide their professional practice, which has laid the foundation for future research in this field in compliance with one of their functions and ways of action. Objective: describe some variables on the scientific preparation of some Graduates in Nursing in primary health care, belonging to the University Polyclinic "Chiqui Gómez Lubián" in the city of Santa Clara, Villa Clara. Methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out from January to March 2020. Theoretical methods were used: analysis-synthesis method, induction-deduction method and historical-logical method; empirical methods: documentary analysis method and questionnaire survey method applied to nurses; and mathematical-statistical method for absolute and relative values. Results: an experience of more than 10 years from this nursing staff, was determined. However, figures show a low level of knowledge in their scientific training, since only minority hold academic degrees such as masters, other are specialists and there is no doctor of science neither doctoral student in the above-mentioned institution; shortcomings in research skills and the lack of knowledge to publish in open access journals, are highlighted. Conclusions: scientific training of professionals from primary health care nursing, was characterized; and deficiencies essentially due to low participation to postgraduate courses, were determined.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Adherence to the best standards of nursing practice is the fundamental principle to improve patient outcome and prevent nursing procedure related-infections. A peripheral venous catheter (PVC) is the most common invasive procedure performed in nursing care. Its poor performance could expose patients to bloodstream-related infections. The present study aimed to assess post-basic nursing students' knowledge of evidence-based guidelines on the management of peripheral venous catheters. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was conducted on May 01-03, 2019, using a convenient sample 239 among post-basic nursing students in Wollega University. RESULTS: The study result showed that nursing students' had a low mean (4.1±1.52) of knowledge about PVC procedure management. Only 41% of the respondents have adhered to recommendations of CDC guidelines. Among the provided options of the items, none achieved 100% correct answers. The majority of nursing students (77%) responded that antiseptic handwashing is always performed before insertion of PVCs. Meanwhile, few students (5%) correctly answered that the infusion set is recommended to be removed after 96 hours when neither lipids nor blood products are administered. In multivariable regression analysis, nursing students who had received training (AOR = 2.9, 95% CI (1.6, 5.1)) and who were younger (AOR = 2.4, 95% CI (1.3, 4.3)) significantly associated with a higher score of knowledge. CONCLUSIONS: This study finding shows that an overall level of knowledge of post-basic nursing students is inadequate. Measurements such as an increase in the provision of adequate training by nurses educators based on evidence-based guidelines could improve the post-basic nursing students' knowledge.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess graduate nursing students' lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT)-specific health competencies. METHOD: Using a cross-sectional design, a 13-item multiple response survey, derived from The Joint Commission guidelines and LGBT health competencies proposed by the Association of American Medical Colleges, was administered online to 116 registered nurses enrolled in graduate study. Survey items assessed nurses' knowledge of LGBT health, professionalism, provision of patient care, communication skills, care environment, gaps in learning, and systems-based practice. Descriptive analyses were used to summarize frequencies and proportions of study variables. RESULTS: Respondent nurses' knowledge about health, prevalent conditions, and social factors that influence LGBT health was somewhat limited. Respondents did not rate their knowledge about LGBT health high (µ = 3.11 [1.1], median = 3) and did not feel qualified to educate other colleagues about LGBT health issues (µ = 2.43 [1.26], median = 2). But 58% (n = 65) indicated that they felt comfortable performing prostate exams on transgender female patients (born with male genitalia); 62% (n = 70) felt comfortable doing pap smears for transgender male patients (born with female genitalia). Sixty nurses (52%) stated that they would advocate reforms within existing health care institutions to improve the care of LGBT patients. Cultural competency training was offered in some health care settings and environmental indications of inclusivity were inconsistent. CONCLUSIONS: LGBT health competence among graduate nursing students was limited. There is a need to reevaluate LGBT health-related content in nursing curricula as well as robust assessment of competence in LGBT health.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Evidence based practice enhances service planning and delivery, clinical decision making and patient care. However, health professionals often lack the time and opportunity to access or generate evidence. Research capacity building is thus an important mechanism for improving health service delivery. This study evaluates the effectiveness of a UK-wide Nurse and Allied Health Professional musculoskeletal research internship programme in which graduates applied to undertake their internship through one of five Higher Education Institutions. The evaluation explores the experiences of interns and their mentors. METHODS: Sixteen new graduates completed the internship programme (September 2015 - August 2018). Twelve interns and thirteen mentors participated in the evaluation. The evaluation used qualitative asynchronous email-based interviews to explore the experiences of interns and mentors. Interpretive phenomenological analysis of coded transcripts identified principal themes. RESULTS: Early research outputs from the interns include three peer reviewed publications and 21 conference abstract presentations. Two interns were in full time research at the time of interview or had a research component in their clinical role. Nine interns in clinical posts disclosed plans to return to research in the near future. Seven themes were identified: the impact on interns' careers; personal impact (for example, influence on self-confidence); impact on clinical practice; drivers for applying; intervention design (for example, attitudes concerning the timing and duration of the intervention); mentorship and networking (including general support provided and quality of career advice); challenges. CONCLUSION: The internship programme is an effective model in building research capacity in musculoskeletal research for Nurses and Allied Health Professionals, influencing careers, building confidence and improving clinical practice. The internship programme has the potential to be replicable to other clinical contexts nationally and internationally.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to analyze the technological production of three professional master programs in the area of Nursing. METHOD: documentary research on primary sources. A total of 100 graduate nurses from three professional master's programs in Nursing in the Southeastern region of Brazil were analyzed, based on the following variables: time of training, typology of products; context of products and technological and educational classification, welfare and management. The study was guided by the question: "How is the technological production of the dissertation of the professional master's degree according to typology, context and technological classification? The analysis of the data was based on the construction of a table that categorized the products according to the typology. RESULTS: development of techniques was the main type of product found, being expressed by flowcharts, protocols, guidelines and training courses. The products were mostly developed in the hospital context, in the educational technology format. CONCLUSION: the technological production of the analyzed programs is restricted, diffuse and, in its majority, of low social impact and has no relevance in the body of the dissertation. Despite the wide possibility of conclusion work, the dissertation, accompanied by an article and/or technical productions, is the main form of presentation.

RESUMO

The reform of the midwifery profession law was long overdue. The WHO has been demanding an academic primary qualification for midwives for years, the EU changed its corresponding directive in 2013, so that within the EU all countries had to change midwifery training accordingly, if they had not already done so. Nevertheless, the reform was controversially discussed in Germany. Especially on the part of medical representatives, numerous concerns were expressed. The need for reform in midwifery training in Germany is enormous, as the last change took place in 1985. The WHO points out that over 50 outcomes in obstetrics will be improved if the quality of midwifery training is increased. There is therefore enormous potential in the reform of legislation. Special provisions of the new midwifery law are novelties and can be exemplary for other studies for health care professions, such as the financing of practical study parts and the student salary.

RESUMO

The full academisation of midwifery training, which thus far has been given in technical colleges, is now beginning in Germany and poses a great challenge for both the German federal states and the universities. Against this background, the aim of this article is to identify possible risks arising from the full academisation of training and the revision of the Midwifery Act and to show possible solution strategies to promote the implementation of study programmes.
