In 1872, New England Hospital for Women and Children was established as the first hospital nursing school in the United States, which became the beginning of modern nursing education in the United States. Its establishment and development were influenced by Nightingale's nursing educational thought, and were also closely related to the work of two American female doctors. The establishment of New England Hospital for Women and Children nursing school made it possible to train professional nurses through formal nursing education, and laid the foundation for the development of nursing education in the United States.

: Editor's note: From its first issue in 1900 through to the present day, AJN has unparalleled archives detailing nurses' work and lives over more than a century. These articles not only chronicle nursing's growth as a profession within the context of the events of the day, but they also reveal prevailing societal attitudes about women, health care, and human rights. Today's nursing school curricula rarely include nursing's history, but it's a history worth knowing. To this end, From the AJN Archives highlights articles selected to fit today's topics and times. In the September 1903 issue of AJN, Jessie E. Catton of Boston City Hospital writes about the nursing care of pneumonia. Many early AJN authors were national figures, and Catton was no exception: she later became secretary of the National League for Nursing Education, a forerunner of the National League for Nursing.Catton notes that in pneumonia, "if no complications occur nursing is considered rather more important than treatment." She goes on to discuss key principles in caring for someone with pneumonia: "absolute rest in bed" to prevent exhaustion; "perfect cleanliness… warmth, light covering, and… fresh air"; careful positioning in bed; and proper treatment of high fever, where "the external use of cold is preferred by many physicians rather than large doses of antipyretic drugs." To read the full article, go to this month's issue, Chastity Warren and colleagues describe their project to prevent pneumonia via the use of standardized oral protocols for high-risk patients in "A Nurse-Driven Oral Care Protocol to Reduce Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia."

The origin story of professional nursing associated with antebellum American faith communities is all but lost. This paper provides historical evidence for professional nursing for that period using a case study approach that examines three faith communities: the Sisters and Daughters of Charity, the Shakers, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The purpose is to present an historical analysis of the three communities' health beliefs, recipes and remedies that were foundational to the spiritual formation and education of professional nurses within their communities. The focus of the analysis is to place the evidence for professional nursing in these faith communities within the broader context of the contemporary American narrative of the "secularization" of professional nursing associated with the adoption of the Nightingale Training Model after 1873. Nursing became a profession in America because of the courage and passion of many for spiritual formation in community around a need to relieve suffering and demonstrate kindness. The history of American nursing is comprised of stories of powerful nurse ancestors that have the potential to inspire and unite us in that same purpose today despite the ambiguities that may still exist around spirituality, religiosity, and secularization.

A legacy project was launched in 2016 to research, capture, and record the history and voice of Kaiser Foundation School of Nursing alumni. The inspirational stories of these early nursing pioneers emerged within a disruptive and innovative health care system known as Kaiser Permanente. Led by a doctorally prepared nurse director, the new school boldly rejected the dominant social norms of the 1940s by welcoming minorities and offering an unprecedented curriculum that prioritized prevention, health promotion, and wellness over conventional institutionalized sick care models. Kaiser Foundation School of Nursing alumni became Kaiser Permanente's earliest nurse leaders, educators, and care advocates. They helped revolutionize the key concepts of integrated patient care. As early innovators, many graduates pursued advanced degrees and were instrumental in defining expanded nursing roles, including the introduction of nurse practitioners in California. How Kaiser Foundation School of Nursing transcended the traditions and cultural norms of the day offers a reflective narrative on the enduring leadership attributes of disruptive innovation and the nurse executive's role in reimagining care for future generations.

Background and aims: The Air Force (Spain) was created in October 1939 and its Corps of Health in February 1940, in which medical assistant noncommissioned officers were integrated. The activies of Air Force medical assistant noncommissioned officers were suppressed in July 1941. The beginning of the professional military nursing of the Air Force will be explored with a focus on the military medicine assistants. Material and methods: Qualitative techniques have been used, with focus on documentary observation. Results: It was possible to determine the beginning and the end of the only promotion of military medicine assistants of the Air Force. Conclusions: When the Air Force was created, it was decided that the medical assistants were going to be part of the auxiliary staff of the Section of Medicine of Health Corps, in line with the national qualification in force. As a result, it was in the Air Force where the full consideration of military was firstly granted to medical assistants; however, the Ministry of the Air changed its previous determination to require medical assistants as auxiliary personnel in the Air Force's Health Corps to consider them totally dispensable, applying this change withinless than a year (AU)

Nursing research in Spain cannot be understood without analyzing the development of this profession over the last 40 years. The social, political and economic context has determined the evolution of nursing research, and an analysis of the current situation is necessary to confront the immediate challenges the nursing profession has to handle. To offer a global perspective of care research in Spain as a framework for reflection and discussion on possible short and medium-term strategies that guide the planning and decision making of the different stakeholders involved in nursing research in Spain. A multi-method study combining documentary analysis with bibliometric methods was carried out. Some isolated policies to promote nursing research have been identified, a significant increase in doctoral training (49 doctoral programs) and 89 nurse research groups (1.92 groups per million inhabitants) responsible for a scientific production that puts Spain in seventh place in the world ranking of scientific production in the area of nursing. The increase in public expenditure on R & D & Iand the growth in bibliometric impact are associated with a higher density of nursing research groups. Nursing research in Spain is sensitive to research promotion policies and resources, although there is no consolidated and uniform strategy that overcomes current barriers. The impact of the academic development of Spanish nNursing in scientific production is still unknown (AU)
