RESUMO

Institutional regulations and market trends are spurring companies to invest more in pro-environmental and sustainable products. Within the pro-environmental offer, there are several packaging alternatives, from sustainably packaged to unpackaged products - so-called bulk - and/or labels, compelling companies into making a complex investment choice. Further, the required higher investments do not always find consumers' approval. Consumers often consider pro-environmental packaging as excessively expensive. Within this context, this study seeks to understand how to exploit the consumers' greater attention to sustainability and well-being to boost consumers' willingness to pay more for pro-environmental products. In doing so, the study compares two packaging options (i.e., sustainably packaged products and bulk products). Additionally, the study assesses differences between highly and slightly familiar consumers, evidencing how to properly encounter the expectations of the two segments. The findings, derived by a multigroup structural equation model conducted on 278 structured questionnaires, reveal that health concern impact is more relevant to highly familiar consumers while environmental concern is for slightly familiar consumers. For the latter, label influence plays a primary role in enhancing their willingness to pay more for pro-environmental products. Overall, sustainably packaged products are preferred to unpackaged products.

RESUMO

ß-cyclodextrin and allyl isothiocyanate inclusion complexes (ß-CD:AITC) have been proposed for developing fresh fruit and vegetable packaging materials. Therefore, the aim of this research was to develop active materials based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) loaded with ß-CD:AITC and to assess changes in the material properties during the release of AITC to food simulants. PLA films with 0, 5 and 10 wt.% ß-CD:AITC were developed by extrusion. Surface properties were determined from contact angle measurements. Films were immersed in water, aqueous and fatty simulants to assess the absorption capacity and the change in the thermal properties. Moreover, the release of AITC in both simulants was evaluated by UV-spectroscopy and kinetic parameters were determined by data modeling. Results showed that a higher concentration of ß-CD:AITC increased the absorption of aqueous simulant of films, favoring the plasticization of PLA. However, the incorporation of ß-CD:AITC also avoided the swelling of PLA in fatty simulant. These effects and complex relationships between the polymer, inclusion complexes and food simulant explained the non-systematic behavior in the diffusion coefficient. However, the lower partition coefficient and higher percentage of released AITC to the fatty simulant suggested the potential of these materials for high-fat fruit and vegetable active packaging applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cigarette pack design plays a crucial role in attracting customers, especially when other marketing methods are limited by policy. University students who engage in casual smoking take the risk of developing an addiction. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of plain packaging (PP) and graphic health warnings (GHWs) on cigarette packages on three outcome variables (negative affect, avoidant responses, and intentions to quit) among ever-smoker university students in Ankara, Turkey, where youth smoking prevalence is high. METHODS: An online survey-based experiment was used to collect data. The respondents were randomly assigned to one of the five conditions that contained images of cigarette packs with specific design elements. Regression analyses (n = 623) were used to compare across conditions and to estimate the effects of combined warnings (versus text-only warnings), stronger GHWs (versus old GHWs), and PP (versus branded packages) on the outcome variables, accounting for potential confounders. RESULTS: Stronger GHWs generated more negative affect (0.31 points out of 5, p = 0.010) and avoidant responses (0.42 points out of 5, p = 0.002) than old warnings (when brand logos were visible). Plain packages generated more negative affect (0.48 points out of 5, p < 0.001) and avoidant responses (0.46 points out of 5, p = 0.001) than branded packages (with old warnings). Disentangling the effects of PP and new GHWs revealed that neither had individual differential effect on intentions to quit within 6 months. CONCLUSIONS: Although no differential effect of PP or harsher GHWs was found on intentions to quit when respondents were exposed to images on screen, both design elements were found to be effective in generating negative affect and avoidant responses. More work is needed to design effective tobacco control measures among youth during critical years of tertiary education.

RESUMO

Seafood is highly perishable and monitoring its freshness this thus an important issue. For the first time, the current study developed a dual-mode freshness indicator based on d-penicillamine capped bimetallic gold/copper nanoclusters (DPA-Au/CuNCs) as a response probe for simultaneous monitoring of ammonia and temperatures to assess seafood freshness. Results indicated that the prepared DPA-Au/CuNCs have good sensitivity toward ammonia, with a limit of detection of 0.14 ppm. The indicator as a gas sensor for ammonia vapour detection exhibited highly recognizable fluorescence colour changes and the variations from white to yellow were observed with increasing storage temperature under natural light. For confirming its practical applications, the indicator was used to simultaneously monitor ammonia and temperatures during the storage of shrimp and fish, showing good potential for practical applications in evaluating seafood freshness for the food industry.

RESUMO

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including odors, are still a key issue in plastic recycling, especially in case of flexible packaging. Therefore, this study presents a detailed qualitative and quantitative VOC analysis by applying gas chromatography on 17 categories of flexible plastic packaging that are manually sorted from bales of post-consumer flexible packaging (e.g., beverage shrink wrap, packaging for frozen food, packaging for dairy products, etc.). A total of 203 VOCs are identified on packaging used for food products, while only 142 VOCs are identified on packaging used for non-food products. Especially, more oxygenated compounds (e.g., fatty acids, esters, aldehydes) are identified on food packaging. With more than 65 VOCs, the highest number of VOCs is identified on packaging used for chilled convenience food and ready meals. The total concentration of 21 selected VOCs was also higher on packaging used for food products (totally 9187 µg/kg plastic) compared to packaging used for non-food packaging (totally 3741 µg/kg plastic). Hence, advanced sorting of household plastic packaging waste, e.g., via tracer-based sorting or watermarking, could open the door towards sorting on other properties than polymer type, such as mono- versus multi-material packaging, food versus non-food packaging or even their VOC profile, which might allow for tailoring washing procedures. Potential scenarios showed that sorting the categories with the lowest VOC load, which corresponds to half of the total mass of flexible packaging, could result in a VOC reduction of 56%. By producing less contaminated plastic film fractions and by tailoring washing processes recycled plastics can ultimately be used in a broader market segment.

RESUMO

Importance: e-Cigarette vaping among youths and adults has increased in Great Britain. The design of e-cigarette packaging may appeal to youths. Regulations that reduce the appeal of e-cigarettes to youths may deter adult smokers from trying e-cigarettes to help them quit smoking. Objective: To examine the association of fully branded and standardized e-cigarette packaging with interest in trying products among youths and adults in Great Britain. Design, Setting, and Participants: In this survey study comprising 2 surveys, the online Action on Smoking and Health Smokefree Great Britain survey collected data between March 25 and April 16, 2021, from a representative sample of 2469 youths (aged 11-18 years) and between February 18 and March 18, 2021, from a representative sample of 12 046 adults (aged ≥18 years). Interventions: A between-individuals experimental design was used to examine participants' perceptions of e-cigarette packs that were digitally altered to remove brand imagery and color. Participants were randomly assigned to view a set of 3 e-cigarette packs from 1 of 3 different packaging conditions: (1) fully branded packs (control), (2) white standardized packs with brand name, or (3) green standardized packs with brand name. Main Outcomes and Measures: Youth participants were asked which product people their age would be most interested in trying, while adult participants were asked which product they would be most interested in trying. All participants could respond "no interest" or "don't know." Logistic regression models tested whether reporting no interest in trying the e-cigarettes differed between the pack conditions. Results: This study included 2469 youths (1286 female youths [52.1%]; mean [SD] age, 15.0 [2.3] years) and 12 046 adults (6412 female [53.2%]; mean [SD] age, 49.9 [17.4] years). Youths had higher odds of reporting no interest among people their age in trying the e-cigarettes packaged in green (292 of 815 [35.8%]; adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 1.37; 95% CI, 1.10-1.71; P = .005) but not white (264 of 826 [32.0%]; AOR, 1.16; 95% CI, 0.93-1.44; P = .20) standardized packaging compared with the fully branded packaging (238 of 828 [28.7%]). Adults had lower odds of reporting no interest in trying e-cigarettes in green standardized packaging (3505 of 4040 [86.8%]; AOR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.73-0.99; P = .046) but not white packaging (3532 of 4006 [88.2%]; AOR, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.89-1.23; P = .59) compared with branded packaging (3526 of 4000 [88.1%]). Youths who had never vaped (275 of 699 [39.3%]; AOR, 1.34; 95% CI, 1.07-1.69; P = .01) and youths who had never smoked (271 of 676 [40.1%]; AOR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.10-1.75; P = .006) were more likely to report no interest in trying e-cigarettes in green packaging compared with branded packaging (224 of 688 [32.6%] never vaping; 216 of 662 [32.6%] never smoking). There were no significant differences by vaping or smoking status among adults. Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this survey study suggest that standardized packaging measures may reduce the appeal of e-cigarettes among youths without reducing their appeal among adults.

RESUMO

The booming express delivery industry corresponds to the environmental challenges caused by massive express packaging waste (EPW). An efficient logistics network is necessary link to support EPW recycling. This study, therefore, designed a circular symbiosis network for EPW recycling based on urban symbiosis strategy. The treatment of EPW in this network includes reuse, recycling and replacing. An optimization model with multi-depot collaboration combining material flow analysis and optimization methods was developed and a hybrid non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) was designed as technical support for designing the circular symbiosis network while quantitatively assessing the economic and environmental benefits of the network. The results show that the designed circular symbiosis option has better resource saving and carbon footprint reduction potential than both the business as usual option and circular symbiosis option without service collaboration. In practice, the proposed circular symbiosis network can save EPW recycling costs and reduce carbon footprint. This study provides a practical guideline for the application of urban symbiosis strategies to help urban green governance and the sustainable development of express companies.

RESUMO

Plantain peels as agro-waste are generated in the millions of tons per year with no profitable management strategies. On the other hand, the excessive use of plastic packaging threatens the environment and human health. This research aimed to address both problems via a green approach. High-quality pectin was recovered from plantain peels via an enzyme-assisted and ethanol-recycling process. The yield and galacturonic acid (GalA) content of the recovered low methoxy pectin was 12.43% and 25.0%, respectively, when cellulase was added at 50 U per 5 g peel powder, with a significantly higher recovery rate and purity than the pectin products extracted with no cellulase (P ≤ 0.05). The recovered pectin was further integrated and reinforced with beeswax solid-lipid nanoparticles (BSLNs) to fabricate films as a potential alternative packaging material to single-use plastics. The reinforced pectin films showed improved light barrier, water resistance, mechanical, conformational, and morphological properties. This study presents a sustainable strategy to transform plantain peels into pectin products and pectin-based packaging films with broad applications.

RESUMO

Consumption of single-use packaging has been increasing globally and the waste produced causes negative impacts on both human and the environment. Retailers, such as supermarkets, developed quickly in recent years to provide for the modern lifestyle, using a lot of packaging in the process of distribution and sales. This research evaluates the packaging waste and CO2 reduction potential of 10 different products sold in supermarkets in Taiwan when adopting different reuse strategies of Reduce, Return and Refill. In the suggested reuse strategies, a total of 8 kilotons of packaging waste and 30 kilotons of packaging CO2 can be reduced, accounting for 50.8% and 59.8% reduction of the current situation, respectively. Retailers are suggested to provide different reuse strategies and experiential activities to increase consumers familiarity with new consumption methods. Significant impacts are made with a slight change in the small proportion investigated, which suggests considerable benefits if the scope is expanded.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oral nicotine pouches (ONPs) are novel products that are marketed as "tobacco-free" alternatives to cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (ST). This study examined the effects of ONP packaging features on adult tobacco users' and non-users' product perceptions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult tobacco users (cigarettes, ST, and dual cigarette/ST) and non-users (total N = 301) viewed ONP pack images in a 4 × 3 × 2 between-subject experiment testing the effects of the displayed flavor (cool mint, coffee, dark frost, and smooth), nicotine concentration (none displayed on the package, 3 mg, and 6 mg), and addiction warning label (yes or no). The outcomes were perceived substitutability of ONPs for cigarettes and ST and perceived risks. We modeled the effects of tobacco user status and the experimental factors on these outcomes. RESULTS: All tobacco user groups perceived ONPs to be significantly less harmful and less addictive than non-users. There were significant effects of nicotine concentration on perceived risks. Compared to packages that did not display nicotine concentration, packages displaying 6 mg nicotine concentration produced significantly lower perceived harm (ß = -0.23, 95% CI -0.44, -0.02), perceived addictiveness (ß = -0.28, 95% CI -0.51, -0.05), risk appraisals of harm (ß = -0.50, 95% CI -0.88, -0.12) and risk appraisals of addictiveness (ß = -0.53, 95% CI -0.95, -0.11). CONCLUSIONS: The study findings demonstrate that the nicotine concentration displayed on ONP packaging can affect adults' perceptions of ONPs. Further research on the effects of ONP packaging features emphasizing nicotine (e.g., "tobacco free" nicotine claims) on tobacco users and non-users is needed to assess their potential public health impact.

RESUMO

The development of bio-based polymer materials, such as polylactic acid (PLA) -based polymers, is an effective strategy to reduce dependence on petrochemical-based polymers. However, the preparation of bio-based polymers with high barrier properties is a major challenge. To overcome this challenge, a nacreous layer structure with a ' brick and mud ' pattern is mimicked to improve the overall performance of the material. In this paper, Poly (L -lactic acid) (PLLA) and Polypropylene Glycol (PPG) was combined to prepare bio-based polyurethane (PU-PLLA), which is used as the slurry structure of nacreous layer. The bio-based biomimetic composite membrane (PU-PLLA/BN) is then obtained by adding boron nitride (BN, brick structure of pearl layer) to it. The water vapor permeability test results show that the permeability of PU-PLLA material can be reduced by more than 50% by 5 wt.% BN, which is because the addition of BN can increase the length and tortuosity of the gas molecular diffusion path in the composite. Therefore, this pearl-inspired PU-PLLA/BN film has excellent moisture resistance, which opens up a broad road for the practical application of PLLA in flexible laminated packaging.

RESUMO

A reliable comparison of European Union (EU) Member States' reporting of statistics on plastic packaging waste generation, recycling and recovery is necessary if there is to be a fair transition to a circular economy across the EU. It is a priority for there to be an improvement in the quality and validity of these statistics to assess each Member State's performance in relation to EU targets. This article explores the quality of national reporting based on the two main approaches which are used to calculate packaging waste generation, namely 'placed on the market' and 'waste analysis'. The findings outline how Member States apply a variety of approaches leading to different packaging waste statistics which makes reported data difficult to compare. Often, it is not clear what approach is applied in different counties. Factors such as freeriding, non-compliance and de minimis have represented the primary weaknesses in evaluating and reporting packaging waste statistics as producers have financial incentives for under-reporting. This article highlights the need to inform circular economy strategies by addressing the challenge of comparing data on packaging and plastic packaging waste generation across the EU.

RESUMO

We examined how young women construct and experience plain tobacco packaging. Forty-one Australian young women who are current smokers took part in this qualitative interview research. Data was analyzed using constructivist grounded theory, with the core category about the strategic ways young women resist plain tobacco packaging. The majority of women reported that plain packaging was unappealing and that the larger health warnings were shocking and offensive. However, almost all reported being desensitized to the graphic health warnings. The graphic warnings were seen as "fake" or lacking in credibility, and irrelevant to the women's life stage. Importantly, the majority of women engaged in practices to strategically resist and avoid health warnings on the packs as a way to continue smoking. Our findings point to the need to develop health warnings on tobacco products that are gender specific and focus on proximal social consequences to increase salience for young women smokers.

RESUMO

A surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common surgical complications. This study analyzed different sources of microorganisms in the air, on reusable surgical instruments, and the outer surface of sterile packaging systems during the use and reprocessing of sterile goods (from the operating room (OR) to the Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD)). The microbial load in the air was analyzed via active air sampling and settle plates. Furthermore, the airborne particle load was measured by a particle counter. Contact agar plates were used to determine the microbial load on surgical instruments and sterile packaging systems. The highest average microbial and particle load was measured in the air of the OR (active air sampling: max. 56 CFU/m3; settle plates: max. 9 CFU; ≥0.3 µm particles in size: 1,958,403 no./m3). However, no microbial load (0 CFU) was detected on surgical instruments sampled in the OR. The outer surface of stored sterile packaging systems showed a maximal microbial load of 64 CFU. The most common identified pathogen was coagulase-negative staphylococci. Compared to properly reprocessed reusable surgical instruments and sterile packaging systems, the air still seems to be the primary potential source of microbial contamination, especially within the OR.

RESUMO

Plastic pollution has long been identified as one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century. To tackle this problem, governments are setting stringent recycling targets to keep plastics in a closed loop. Yet, knowledge of the stocks and flows of plastic has not been well integrated into policies. This study presents a dynamic probabilistic economy-wide material flow analysis (MFA) of seven plastic polymers (HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS, PVC, EPS, and PET) in Norway from 2000 to 2050. A total of 40 individual product categories aggregated into nine industrial sectors were examined. An estimated 620 ± 23 kt or 114 kg/capita of these seven plastic polymers was put on the Norwegian market in 2020. Packaging products contributed to the largest share of plastic put on the market (∼40%). The accumulated in-use stock in 2020 was about 3400 ± 56 kt with ∼60% remaining in buildings and construction sector. In 2020, about 460 ± 22 kt of plastic waste was generated in Norway, with half originating from packaging. Although ∼50% of all plastic waste is collected separately from the waste stream, only around 25% is sorted for recycling. Overall, ∼50% of plastic waste is incinerated, ∼15% exported, and ∼10% landfilled. Under a business-as-usual scenario, the plastic put on the market, in-use stock, and waste generation will increase by 65%, 140%, and 90%, respectively by 2050. The outcomes of this work can be used as a guideline for other countries to establish the stocks and flows of plastic polymers from various industrial sectors which is needed for the implementation of necessary regulatory actions and circular strategies. The systematic classification of products suitable for recycling or be made of recyclate will facilitate the safe and sustainable recycling of plastic waste into new products, cap production, lower consumption, and prevent waste generation.

RESUMO

Robust biopolymer-based composite film with multifunctional performances significantly contributes to the packaging field. Herein, we proposed a sort of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) based composite film via incorporating versatile zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) materials. Compared to pristine CMC film, the OTR, WVTR, and tensile strength of CMC/ZIF composite film with 1 wt ‰ Zn/Co-ZIF were improved from 64.89 cm3*µm/(m2*d*kPa), 1579.21 g/(m2*24h) and 16.9 MPa to 20.79 cm3*µm/(m2*d*kPa), 1209.58 g/(m2*24h) and 70.1 MPa, respectively. Notably, owing to the reduced band gap and intrinsic chemical and thermal stability of Zn/Co-ZIF, the fabricated Zn/Co-ZIF/CMC composite film presented well UV protection capability within the whole UV region and excellent UV-blocking durability after being exposed to UV-light at 365 nm for 12 h. In practice, the photocatalytic degradation of RhB solutions under UV light could be effectively suppressed when using Zn/Co-ZIF/CMC film as UV protection layer. Our findings proposed the potential application of these versatile ZIF materials as functional nanofiller within biopolymer substances for UV protection and transparent packaging area.

RESUMO

In the biopharmaceutical industry, the observation of a single particle in a vial or syringe may result in entire lots of drug product recalls. U.S. Pharmacopeia <787> and <788> describe light obscuration methods and particle collection (membrane filtration) followed by light microscopy for particle counting of filled drug products. However, there are no corresponding pharmacopeial methods for determining the particle levels of unfilled primary packaging components or their packaging materials (tubs, nests, bags, etc.). This article describes a quantification method to accurately assess the number of particles in primary containers and corresponding closures. As a microscopic method, the size ranges can be set by the user and are limited only by the optical properties of the microscope and analysis time. Particle load is a critical quality attribute that has a direct impact on product safety. Applying a standardized method to compare the effect of process changes on particle load can aid manufacturers in refining their processes to minimize particulates. Described herein are the critical parameters to develop physical rinse methods and the subsequent qualification results to measure the visible particle load of nonsiliconized and siliconized primary packaging systems.
