RESUMO

This paper introduces a new definition for burnout and investigates the psychometric properties of the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT). In a prior qualitative study, 49 practitioners were interviewed about their conceptualization of burnout (part 1). Using a dialectical approach, four core dimensions-exhaustion, mental distance, and impaired emotional and cognitive impairment-and three secondary dimensions-depressed mood, psychological distress, and psychosomatic complaints-emerged, which constitute the basis of the BAT. In the second study, the psychometric characteristics of the BAT were investigated in a representative sample of 1500 Flemish employees, focusing on factorial validity, reliability, and construct validity, respectively. Results demonstrate the assumed four-factor structure for the core dimensions, which is best represented by one general burnout factor. Contrary to expectations, instead of a three-factor structure, a two-factor structure was found for the secondary dimensions. Furthermore, the BAT and its subscales show adequate reliability. Convergent validity and discriminant validity with other burnout measures-including the MBI and OLBI-was demonstrated, as well as discriminant validity with other well-being constructs, such as work engagement and workaholism.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic could be leaving psychological consequences in the population, both the expected fact of a global reinfection, and the unequal temporal distribution between countries, impose on us the need to be prepared and have tools with the ability to measure in the appropriate context the personal response to this crisis. OBJECTIVE: To carry out the translation, cross-cultural adaptation and validation for students of Bachelor of Nursing in Spain of the "Measurement Scale of the Manifestations of Psychological Well-being". METHOD: The target population was the students of the four courses of the Nursing Degree of the Catholic University of Valencia. Data collection was implemented through an online questionnaire within the @studentsONquarentine protocol. The final sample was made up of 375 students. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The factorial structure of the Portuguese scale is maintained. KMO: 0.923; Bartlett's T. 4552.347 (p = .000) and Pearson's r by factors between .702 and .861. Therefore, we have an instrument with optimal criteria of construct validity and reliability for the measurement of Psychological Well-being in Nursing Degree students in conditions of isolation

The aim of the current research was to increase the knowledge of the behavioural, cognitive and physiological symptoms of burnout in athletes, additionally knowing if there are differences in the perception of burnout syndrome between a group of experts who had had an athlete with burnout and another who did not have it. The study participants were 28 experts in Sports Psychology, 11 women and 17 men (M age = 46.75 years; SD = 10.98) being administered three semi-structured Delphi questionnaires specifically designed by researchers. Both groups highlight as behavioural symptoms: lack of training adherence and low sport performance; as cognitive symptoms: sport devaluation and ideas of drop out of sport; and as physiological symptoms: tension and physical exhaustion. With the approach to the characteristic symptomatology presented by athletes with the syndrome in this study, we tried to get a better understanding of burnout in the sports field. Related to this information, both prevention and intervention strategies might be developed, aimed at preventing or treating the main symptomatology

RESUMO

There is widespread debate as to how to accurately define and measure burnout. The present study sought to address these issues by inviting participants who self-identified as experiencing burnout to complete a questionnaire covering a large item set of putative burnout features. Bifactor modelling identified a 'general' factor with items capturing exhaustion as well as psychological and cognitive dysfunction. Three additional 'specific' factors were also generated that delineated work-focused, inability to feel and compromised work functioning constructs. Similar factors were found when those still working and those no longer working were compared. Results indicate a new heuristic diathesis-stress model of burnout.

RESUMO

Resulting from a community-identified need for a well-validated indicator of caregiving difficulties for use in practice settings, a brief form of the Atypical Maternal Behavior Instrument for Assessment and Classification System (AMBIANCE) was developed for use as a screening instrument. Prior to its dissemination, this study aimed to assess the feasibility, reliability, and validity of the AMBIANCE-Brief. Adolescent mother-infant dyads (N = 69) participated in the Strange Situation Procedure, as well as play sessions with and without toys. Maternal disrupted caregiving was coded from the play sessions using the AMBIANCE and AMBIANCE-Brief. The AMBIANCE-Brief demonstrated convergent validity with the AMBIANCE in the play session with toys (r = .65, p < .001) and without toys (r = .61, p < .001). Concurrent validity of the AMBIANCE-Brief was also demonstrated in relation to infant attachment disorganization in the play session with toys (r = .36, p < .05) and without toys (r = .32, p < .01). These findings suggest a shorter protocol for assessing disrupted caregiving may be feasible and valid for use in community settings. Future studies are in progress to train community practitioners in the use of the AMBIANCE-Brief and to evaluate their reliability.

Informal caregivers are those people who perform all the care tasks of dependent persons. We present a clinical case of an informal caregiver presenting insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, stress, and depression. She is diagnosed with caregiver burnout syndrome using the Zarit scale. As part of the treatment, it is essential that health workers teach basic techniques to these patients to care for the dependent person efficiently and without a negative impact on their health. It can be concluded that the gradual ageing of the population will make this syndrome increasingly frequent. Health professionals will have to make use of better strategies based on scientific evidence to address this issue and to obtain positive results in patients

RESUMO

The study and evaluation of burnout in the context of parenthood have been of growing interest over the last years. The aim of this study is to develop and validate the Maternal Burnout Scale (MBS) to contribute knowledge of the assessment of parental burnout. Items were developed based on elements from an extensive literature review that defined the significant dimensions interesting to the parental context. These items were also examined by expert clinicians. The revised version was submitted for an exploratory testing on 673 French mothers (mean age 31.69 ± 5.52 years) having at least one child living at home (0-25 years); then, it was submitted for a confirmatory analysis of 1277 (mean age 32.67 ± 5.49 years) mothers having the same parental profile (child aged 0.1-24 years). The exploratory analysis suggests a three-factor structure that accounted for 51% of the variance: negative emotional-behavioral manifestations (25%), physical and emotional exhaustion (15%), and a sense of parental achievement (13%). The confirmatory analysis retained a bifactorial structure recognizing maternal burnout as a common factor as well as the three other factors. According to the established threshold scores, 6.6% (n = 84) of the mothers could experience clinical maternal burnout. Indeed, Maternal Burnout Scale (MBS) has shown good psychometric properties with a high internal consistency both for the general score and for subscales. Furthermore, the validity of the scale was also confirmed. The MBS appears to be an applicable and reliable tool to determine the presence and severity of burnout symptoms among mothers. As a conclusion, the prevalence of maternal burnout indicates the importance of studying this syndrome in order to establish measures of prevention and actions to be taken.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Burnout is a psychological syndrome that results from chronic exposure to job stress. It is defined by a triad of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. In research, mostly from high-income countries, burnout is common in health care professionals, especially in anesthesiologists. Burnout can negatively impact patient safety, the physical and mental health of the anesthetist, and institutional efficiency. However, data on burnout for anesthesia providers in low- and middle-income countries are poorly described. This study sought to determine the prevalence of burnout syndrome among all anesthesia providers (physician and nonphysician) working in Zambian hospitals and to determine which sociodemographic and occupational factors were associated with burnout. METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to all Zambian anesthesia providers working in private and public hospitals. The questionnaire assessed burnout using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey, a validated 22-item survey widely used to measure burnout among health professionals. Sociodemographic and occupational factors postulated to be associated with burnout were also assessed. RESULTS: Surveys were distributed to all 184 anesthesia providers in Zambia; 160 were returned. This resulted in a response rate representing 87% of all anesthesia providers in the country. Eighty-six percentage of respondents were nonphysician anesthesia providers. Burnout was present in 51.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 43.2-59.2) of participants. Logistic regression analysis revealed that "not having the right team to carry out work to an appropriate standard" (odds ratio, 2.91, 95% CI, 1.33-6.39; P = .008), and "being a nonphysician" (odds ratio, 3.4, 95% CI, 1.25-12.34; P = .019) were significantly associated with burnout in this population. CONCLUSIONS: In a cross-sectional survey of anesthesia providers in Zambia, >50% of the respondents met the criteria for burnout. The risk was particularly high among nonphysician providers who typically work in isolated rural practice. Efforts to decrease burnout rates through policy and educational initiatives to increase the quantity and quality of training for anesthesia providers should be considered.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT The aims of the current study were: (a) to construct a reference table for burnout in soccer athletes of the U-20 category and (b) to verify the individual oscillations in the perception of these athletes in relation to burnout over three periods of the sports season. In total, 53 U-20 soccer athletes participated. The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire, Brazilian version, was applied to athletes during training, competition, and vacation periods of the sports season. A reference table was built for under-20 soccer athletes for each assessment period. Fluctuations were observed in the mean values of the total burnout frequency of the athletes during the 3 periods: training ( X ¯=1.35 ± 0.13 and X ¯=2.11 ± 0.19), competition ( X ¯=1.26 ± 0.13 and X ¯=2.27 ± 0.24), and vacation ( X ¯=1.27 ± 0.14 and X ¯= 2.18 ± 0.28). Based on this table and the individual classification of each athlete, it was observed that 32 athletes presented fluctuations in the perception of burnout during the sports season and 21 athletes did not present fluctuations in feelings of burnout during the three evaluation periods. The period with the highest number of athletes (n = 17) with a high level of burnout was the training period. It is concluded that it is not possible to establish a single and collective behavior regarding the fluctuations in burnout levels in athletes of the U-20 category during a sports season, and that the category reference table contributes to greater accuracy of the burnout evaluation in each period in the season.

Objectives: To examine the psychometric properties of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) Thai version and to determine the frequency of burnout and correlation between burnout and associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among undergraduate medical students using convenience sampling (n=545, 76.1% response rate, female 52.1%). Data were collected by a self-report survey. The MBI-SS was translated in Thai and tested for internal consistency using Cronbach's coefficient alpha. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed using as fit indices of the chi-square and degree of freedom ratio (χ2/df), Comparative Fit Index (CFI), the Goodness of Fit Index (GFI), the Non-normed Fit Index (NNFI), Akaike information criterion (AIC) and the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA). Spearman and Kendall's tau-b were used to identify correlations between burnout, depression and other factors. Results: Interrater reliability was acceptable with Kappa of 0.83. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated good fit indices (χ2/df=197.62/83, CFI=0.97, GFI=0.95, NNFI=0.96, AIC=271.62 and RMSEA=0.06). Burnout had a weak, positive association with the PHQ-9 (r=0.294, df=2, p< 0.001). The screening depression score had a significant, modest positive association with emotional exhaustion (r=0.469, df=4, p<0.001) and cynicism (r=0.411, df=4, p< 0.001), and a weak inverse association with professional efficacy (r=-0.273, df=4, p< 0.001). Conclusions: The Thai version of the MBI-SS had adequate psychometric properties among Thai medical students and can be used to assess burnout among undergraduate medical students in Thailand. Burnout was associated with risk for depression. Further studies on other associated factors contributing to depression are suggested.

RESUMO

Physician burnout-a constellation of depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, reduced feelings of personal attachment, and a low sense of accomplishment-is a term that has been around since the 1980s. Burnout rates among residents and fellows are higher than medical students, attending physicians, and age-matched college graduates, with rates ranging from 40-80% of trainees across subspecialties. Unfortunately, burnout among residents and trainees has been linked to lower scores on in-service examinations for internal medicine residents as well as poorer overall health and exercise habits. The purpose of this review is to quantify the extent of burnout among urology residents and examine effective techniques and measures to prevent burnout and practically what can be done to combat this growing epidemic.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The primary objective of this study is to identify the typology of exhausted mothers based on, depressive, anxiety, and guilt symptoms. And, secondarily, evaluate whether these profiles differ on parental stress, environmental stress, and parental burnout. METHODS: Five hundred and fifty French-speaking mothers suffering from exhaustion completed several questionnaires assessing parental stress, general perceived stress, maternal guilt, and depressive and anxious symptomology. Results from two hundred and ten mothers with burnout symptoms were explored (mean age [SD] = 33.69 [5.1] years). In order to identify possible subgroups, a hierarchical cluster analysis was performed. RESULTS: Three profiles were highlighted from the sample (Wilks' λ = 0.156, p < .0001): the first was characterized by high feelings of guilt (29.52%; n = 62), the second showed a dominance of anxiety symptoms and high feelings of guilt (36.19%; n = 76), and the fourth presented low levels of depression, anxiety, and feelings of guilt (23.3%, n = 49). DISCUSSION: These findings suggest different profiles of burned out mothers that vary according to severity of anxiety, depression, and guilt. That suggests that parental burnout, depression and anxiety are distinct disorders. This study also makes it possible to show the aggravating effect of guilt in the experience of burnout. Additional research is warranted as it is important to more carefully consider possible appropriate intervention strategies given the differing experiences of burned out mothers.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the quality of life (QoL) of mothers of children with Down syndrome (DS) and the factors related to it. METHODS: Seventy-five DS child-mother diads and 54 healthy child-mother diads were included in this study. The brief World Health Organization Quality of Life scale - Turkish version (WHOQOL-BREF-TR), Symptom Check List-90-Revised (SCL-90-TR), Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were completed by mothers to assess maternal QoL, burnout, anxiety, depression and general psychiatric symptoms. RESULTS: Mothers of DS children had significantly higher SCL-90 general symptom index scores, Beck depressive symptom scores and higher scores in all domains of the brief World Health Organization Quality of Life scale - (WHOQOL-BREF-TR) except the WHOQOL-BREF-TR-psychological health domain. MBI personal achievement scores were weakly correlated with psychological health in mothers of DS children. There was a reverse correlation between comorbid disorders and the WHOQOL-BREF-TR psychological health domain, and a weak correlation between sex (having a baby girl with DS) and increased WHOQOL-BREF-TR physical health domain score. Number of offspring was negatively correlated with maternal social quality of life. CONCLUSION: Mothers of children with DS are negatively affected in terms of QoL and mental health, even in the early period. It would be useful to systematically screen these mothers and to refer them for appropriate intervention at an early stage.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The problem of defining burnout concerns its overlapping effect with other syndromes and disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Additionally, some individual characteristics influence susceptibility to burnout (e.g., neuroticism). Therefore, the question arises whether burnout is or is not a distinct syndrome. The aim of the study is to compare 2 distinct burnout measures by analyzing their connections with organizational and individual variables. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted in the Institute of Applied Psychology at the Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland on a group of employees (N = 100; 40 men; mean age 36.03 years). All participants completed 2 burnout scales: the Maslach Burnout Inventory - General Survey (MBI-GS) and the Link Burnout Questionnaire (LBQ). Organizational and individual factors were controlled with Areas of Worklife Survey, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, NEO Five-Factor Inventory and Beck's Depression Inventory scales. A structural equation path model was created to quantify the relations between organizational factors and burnout, as well as to control the individual factors of anxiety, neuroticism and depression. RESULTS: The results indicate high compatibility between MBI-GS and LBQ on burnout diagnosis. The MBI-GS and LBQ revealed stronger connections with organizational context and individual characteristics, respectively. Depression explains dimensions of exhaustion (MBI-GS, LBQ), sense of disillusion (LBQ), neuroticism-exhaustion (MBI-GS); anxiety explains sense of professional inefficacy (LBQ). CONCLUSIONS: Besides organizational variables, individual characteristics also play an important role in explaining burnout syndrome. Exploring the 2 burnout models has revealed that depression is an important determinant of exhaustion. Cynicism and relationship deterioration have consistently been explained only by organizational context. Int J Occup Med Environ Health. 2019;32(2):229-44.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of Burnout in out-of-hospital emergency medical personnel. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observational, descriptive and transversal study. A professional data sheet and the Maslach Burnout Inventory of 22 items were applied. In order to get the absolute and relative frequencies a descriptive statistical analysis was performed. In addition to the mean and the standard deviation, a contrast to the Kruskal-Wallis hypothesis and the Wilcoxon hypothesis was shown. In order to analyze the reliability and validity of the scale, Cronbach's alpha coefficients were obtained for the 3 subscales. RESULTS: Regarding the time worked in the professional category, the drivers who have been driving for less than a year have higher levels of burnout. In relation to the type of contract are those of fixed-term contract. The worse the state of health (regular or bad) is, the greater the burnout. Single people have greater emotional exhaustion. The fact of not working with the same partners also increases this phenomenon. Burnout does not occur in workers with 24-hour shift, but it occurs in other shifts. Due to the small size of the short-time working sample, no statistical differences were found in the score. CONCLUSIONS: The interest of this study lies in knowing the emotional exhaustion level from the out-of-hospital emergency professionals, as well as evidencing the need to take preventive measures. The results of our study are in line with those published

Burnout syndrome is analyzed in soccer and basketball referees, along with the relationship between resilience scores and this syndrome. The sample was composed of 265 referees (41.9% were soccer referees and 58.1% basketball). Evaluations were conducted using the Burnout in Sport Revised Questionnaire (IBD-R) and the Resilience Scale (RS). The soccer referees, when compared with those of basketball, showed greater emotional exhaustion (p = .002), depersonalization (p= .024) and personal fulfillment (p < .001). Lose who obtained high scores on resilience (29.8%) (> 147 points in RS) incomparison with those who obtained low resilience scores (70.2%), showed lower emotional exhaustion (p = .007) and reduced personal achievement (p < .001); but there were no differences in depersonalization (p = .561). Soccer referees have a greater risk of obtaining scores that indicate low resilience [OR = 2.83] compared with basketball referees (p < .001; 95% CI. [1.58-5.06]). It was found that Personal Competency produces the greatest explanatory increase (ΔR2 = .207) and predictive capacity (β = .539) for Personal Achievement. In future, it would be interesting to analyze both the contextual variables and the coping strategies used by the participants to determine the differences observed in burnout and resilience
