Introduction: Empathy is an important concept in the interaction between the physiotherapist and the patient, and contributes to a better care of the patient. Empathy training in physiotherapy students must be taught by the universities from the first year of study because of the complex character of this attribute. However, any intervention must be preceded by a comprehensive empathy diagnosis. Objective: To determine the levels of empathy and its components in physiotherapy students according to course and gender factors. Material and methods: Exploratory and cross-sectional study conducted on a sample of 191 students. The empathy data was collected by applying the Jefferson Empathy Scale. The median, 1st and 3rd quartile, interquartile difference and confidence interval of the median were estimated. The possible differences in Empathy and its components were analysed using of non-parametric tests (Mood's median). Results: There were differences in empathy and in the compassionate care component in the course factor. The empathy decline in the compassionate component was observed. Empathy and its components did not differ by gender. Conclusions: The differences found in empathy and in the compassionate care component, the absence of empathy differences in empathy between the genders, and observation of a decline in empathy only in the compassionate care component, were specific characteristics in the students examined. These represent a specific empathy diagnosis, and are the basis for developing an intervention strategy consistent with these results

RESUMO

Negative changes in cardiovascular and autonomic variables in stroke survivors have encouraged the global scientific community to focus on investigating therapeutic strategies to mitigate stroke damage. The objective of the present study was to describe the effects of exercise training on cardiovascular and autonomic variables in stroke survivors. We used the PICO (population, intervention, control/comparison, and outcome variables) model for the search of articles in PubMed and Physiotherapy Evidence Databases from 2009 to December 2018. The following data were also recorded: type of study, author, year of publication, participants (time after stroke, sample size, and age) and benefits of exercise training. A total of 544 articles were initially selected, of which nine peer-reviewed articles met the search criteria. These nine studies enrolled 611 participants (middle-aged or elderly), and pointed to positive effects of training on maximal oxygen uptake, peak aerobic capacity, 6-minute walk test and resting heart rate. However, more well-controlled studies are needed to confirm the benefits of exercise training on cardiovascular and autonomic variables in this population

RESUMO

Introduction: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts during chew, swallowing, yawning, conversation and in activities involving jaw movements. Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) is a set of disorders involving the masticatory muscles in the TMJ and associated structures. Joint mobilization aims to relief pain and restoring the function of the compromised body segment, increasing its degree of mobility. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the influence of oscillatory joint mobilization on TMD. Method: A descriptive case study with a patient who presented a clinical diagnosis of TMD in the Clinical School of Physiotherapy of the Leão Sampaio School, Juazeiro do Norte, CE, Brazil, from September 3 to October 6 of 2014, twice a week, lasting 40 minutes, a total of 10 visits. Results: The patient presented a gain in the range of motion of the mouth opening (from 17 mm to 46 mm), pain relief (from grade 6 to grade 0 on the Visual Analogue Scale) and improvement in muscle function. Conclusion: Oscillatory joint mobilization in TMD may be effective in increasing mandibular range of motion and opening of the mouth, as well as in reducing TMJ pain and masticatory musculature.

Introdução: A articulação temporomandibular (ATM) atua durante a mordida, a deglutição, o bocejo, a conversação e as atividades envolvendo movimentos do maxilar.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is described as an anterior pain condition in the knee, aggravated by movements that increase the compressive forces at the patellofemoral joint. It mainly affects young physically active women and it is known that its etiology is multifactorial, and extrinsic and intrinsic factors to the body are involved. Due to the complexity and numerous physiotherapeutic interventions, the objective of this systematic review was to discuss evidence of greater clinical relevance in the physiotherapeutic practice for exercise-based intervention in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome. The search and evaluation procedure followed the method recommended by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis Protocols and, in this way, an electronic database of PubMed data was performed in the English language between January 2005 to December 2017, with the keywords: "patellofemoral pain syndrome", "physiotherapy", "exercise" and "treatment". For the inclusion criteria, only randomized clinical trials, characterized by physical therapy and exercisebased intervention, with a score greater than or equal to 7/10 on the Physiotherapy Evidence Datebase scale were adopted. 269 randomized clinical trials were found in the search, with 177 articles selected by titles related to the topic. After the selection process and evaluation of the articles, 11 studies were selected for discussion. Of these, 7 randomized clinical trials included hip and knee stabilization exercises, and 2 of these studies added trunk stabilization exercises to intervention. Therefore, conservative treatment is an effective strategy and an exercise-based intervention involving proximal and local factors to the knee promotes pain relief and improvement of function in individuals with patellofemoral pain syndrome....(AU)

Human movement, and its dysfunctions, are the main object of physical therapy studies. In this sense, to understand and analyze in an objective and precise way the complexity of the human motor gestures, it is an essential question that demands the development of tools that allow to reach a precise functional diagnosis. The objective of this study was to verify if the change of position of the photographic camera height promotes variation of the results of the joint amplitude analysis of the elbow, through computerized photogrammetry and if height influence in the photogrammetric analysis. Six examiners were selected among the academics of the 4th and 5th year of the UEPA Physiotherapy course. These examiners were dedicated to obtaining the angular values of ADM from the elbow joint. From several angles, only one angle was taken into account for the statistical analysis, called the key angle, later the data were analyzed in the program BioEstat 5.0 and SPSS 18. Through the results found, it was observed a normal distribution for the data obtained in all the different heights of the camera, except for the height of 50cm. The same pattern of variance was also observed in all the tested heights, demonstrating nonsignificant variation among the results of the sample. It was concluded that the variations in the height of the photographic camera were not able to significantly alter the final result of the analysis by computerized photogrammetry. It was identified that the height of 50cm influenced the final result, since it showed in this investigation a risk of presenting inconsistent results statistically (p = 0.01). Therefore, the use of this camera height is not recommended, avoiding errors in the interpretation of photogrammetric analyzes....(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: No documented standard or core competencies exist for paediatric curriculum in entry-level physiotherapy programs in Australia. Consequently, extensive variability is thought to exist amongst Australian entry-level physiotherapy programs for preparing physiotherapists to work safely and effectively with children. The purpose of this study was to explore the landscape of paediatric curriculum in Australian entry-level physiotherapy programs and identify the paediatric content being covered, its perceived importance according to university academics who teach paediatrics, the mode of delivery and assessment, and the strengths, weaknesses, barriers and facilitators to implementing paediatric curriculum. METHODS: A web-based desktop audit and an online cross-sectional survey using closed and open-ended questions was administered to all Australian universities offering entry-level physiotherapy programs in November 2017. Content coverage and perceived level of importance for paediatric content areas were determined using Likert scale responses. Open-ended responses were thematically analysed to identify key themes for strengths, weaknesses and facilitators to implementation of paediatric curriculum. RESULTS: All (n = 20, 100%) entry-level programs used the terms lifespan, child and/or paediatrics somewhere in at least one subject descriptor. Forty-five percent (n = 9) of universities did not use the terms lifespan, child or paediatric in their published learning objectives. Eight (40%) universities offered a paediatric stand-alone course. Sixty-five (13/20) percent of universities invited, responded to the survey. For paediatric conditions the perceived level of importance was predominately higher than its course content coverage for 19 of the 31 conditions surveyed. Key barriers to implementating paediatric curriculum were: crowded curriculum, limited financial resources resulting in a lack of qualified staff, lack of prioritisation of paediatric curriculum and inadequate paediatric placement availability. Facilitators for effective implementation of paediatric content were stand-alone paediatric subjects, demonstrated dedication to paediatric curriculum and having suitably qualified faculty members. CONCLUSION: The results of this survey provide the physiotherapy community with the views of paediatric physiotherapy academic educators regarding the content, perceived need to expand content delivery in identified clinical areas, and the barriers and facilitators to implementing paediatric content in Australian entry-level physiotherapy programs. Further research exploring similar questions with paediatric physiotherapy clinicians would complement the findings of this study.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidenced based talking therapy designed to affect client Health Behaviour Change. Previous research indicates that Allied Health Professionals (AHP) can effectively use the approach and training at pre-registration level has been piloted. However, student experiences of training is underexplored. AIM: To explore Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy students' experiences of training in and implementation of Motivational Interviewing. METHODS: Four focus groups including 24 undergraduates (14 OT and 10 PT) were conducted at the completion of the training and a subsequent clinical placement. Transcribed texts were analysed thematically. Data were triangulated with student written post-it notes and open questions in a post training questionnaire. RESULTS: Two overarching themes were developed from the data. Learning different ways to interact and the challenge of transformation illuminates specific aspects of the training which enabled learning as well as areas of contention. Using the spirit of MI, but not every contact counts highlights the facilitators and challenges of implementation on placements. CONCLUSIONS: Motivational interviewing is a useful addition to training neophyte health students. Key skills were adopted and in some cases transferred into practice. The process of learning indicates areas of potential improvement to enhance relevance of practice scenarios. The transfer to practice is more complex illustrating a need to negotiate professional and institutional expectations which should be considered in training.

It also set out to determine the levels of adherence of physicians to the clinical management and treatment guidelines of patients with PAD, as well as to determine the challenges the cardiologist faces when referring patients with PAD to the PT, and to identify potential strategies to promote it. Methods: This was a quantitative study, conducted using an exploratory cross-sectional, non-experimental design. To address the proposed objectives, a questionnaire was constructed and validated, which was administered to 25 physicians specialised in cardiology (68%), interventional cardiology (14%), or vascular surgery (18%). A descriptive analysis was performed on the data. Results: The level of physician's knowledge about the role of PT in general and in the prevention and management of patients with PAD was 70%, and 62% of physicians only refer up to 10% of their patients with PAD to the PT. Among the main barriers to referring these patients is the low coverage by health insurance providers, and the high cost of rehabilitation services. Conclusion: Educating cardiologists about the scope of physiotherapy can lead to recognition of its effectiveness. The barriers encountered may predispose the patient to future complications. Although there is a lack of knowledge about the PT, there is a physician's willingness to be educated in order to use all available tools for the patient's well-being

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Awareness of global issues and cultural competence are essential for health professions students. Educational programs utilize International Service Learning (ISL) to address global issues and diverse cultures. This study describes short- and long-term benefits of ISL on Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students. PROCEDURES: The ISL included study of Ayurveda, clinical service, collaborative learning, and cultural activities. A mixed-methods design included the Cross Cultural Adaptability Index (CCAI) administered to 14 students pre- and post-ISL and qualitative analysis of reflective papers. Interviews of participants were completed 2 to 3 years later. FINDINGS: Overall CCAI scores showed a statistically significant difference of 0.001 (p<0.01) pre and post ISL. Three subscales also showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.01). Qualitative analysis of reflective papers revealed three categories of impact: environmental connectedness, personal growth, and professional growth. Interviews conducted years following the ISL indicate that participants attribute several aspects of their professional and personal way of being to the ISL, including the importance of whole person care. CONCLUSIONS: Studies have shown benefits to health professions students immediately following an ISL. This study demonstrates that benefits persist years later. The long-term impact strengthens the rationale for including ISL during professional education.

RESUMO

Clinical decision-making (CDM) is essential to professional competency but remains a difficult concept to teach and learn. The purpose of this study was to assess usability and efficacy of digital case studies for development of CDM skills within the neurologic physical therapy curriculum. METHOD: A two-part pilot study was designed to: 1) examine the usability and perceived efficacy of digital case studies; and 2) examine the efficacy of case studies upon student CDM skill development. Twenty-one students participated in the initial pilot study and were given a 5-question survey and open-response questions that were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The second phase of the study consisted of two groups (n=48): one completed digital case studies, and another completed paper cases. Both groups completed pre- and post-tests, and data were analyzed using independent sample t-test for comparing mean difference. ASSESSMENT: Students reported digital case studies as user-friendly, but there was no statistically significant difference found in CDM between groups. CONCLUSION: While the use of digital case studies generated student satisfaction, they do not appear to eclipse low-tech options in terms of efficacy. Various pedagogies can yield similar results, and thus faculty resources should be considered when developing educational methodologies.
