RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim: to determine the most optimal method of genital prolapse correction among the available nonsurgical methods from the perspective of differentiated approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: using the methods of comparison, analysis and synthesis, we have compiled and processed the world's data from such major search databases as PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane over the last ten years. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: the detection of genital prolapses at an early stage and the early nonsurgical treatment can prevent the disease progression, eliminate the symptoms, especially urinary problems in most patients, and improve the life quality.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a worldwide health emergency that has impacted 188 countries at last count. The rapid community transmission and relatively high mortality rates with COVID-19 in modern times are relatively unique features of this flu pandemic and have resulted in an unparalleled global health crisis. SARS-CoV-2, being a respiratory virus, mainly affects the lungs, but is capable of infecting other vital organs, such as brain, heart and kidney. Emerging evidence suggests that the virus also targets male and female reproductive organs that express its main receptor ACE2, although it is as yet unclear if this has any implications for human fertility. Furthermore, professional bodies have recommended discontinuing fertility services during the pandemic such that reproductive services have also been affected. Although increased safety measures have helped to mitigate the propagation of COVID-19 in a number of countries, it seems that there is no predictable timeline to containment of the virus, a goal likely to remain elusive until an effective vaccine becomes available  and widely distributed across the globe. In parallel, research on reproduction has been postponed for obvious reasons, while diagnostic tests that detect the virus or antibodies against it are of vital importance to support public health policies, such as social distancing and our obligation to wear masks in public spaces. OBJECTIVES:  The people of ancient age appealed to sanctuaries of different gods and goddesses they believed to have healing powers and consecrated anatomical votive offerings representing their sick or healed organs. Male genital organ votives were also present among these votives. In this article, male genital organ votive offerings presented to gods and goddesses were examined and the votives giving information about the diseases they indicated were revealed in contemporary medicine. METHODS: Information available in written resources on ancient medicine and diseases was reviewed. Main sanctuary healing centers in Anatolia (Asia Minor), Greece and Italy which concurrently hosted similar civilizations were investigated. Male genital organ shap anatomical votive samples in national and foreign medical history and archaeology museums, galleries and special collections were investigated and examined. RESULTS:  It was observed that most male genital organ votives had a healthy and normal structure and didn't provide any specific information on a urogenital disease. But it was also observed that some votives among genital organ votives consecrated by sick individuals to gods demonstrated some urogenital diseases and conditions. Among this very limited number of genital votives providing disease information, votives indicating phimosis, hypospadias, varicocele, penile hemangioma or condylama, Peyronie's disease or penile curvature, genital hidradenitis suppurativa, condition of pubic hair and erectile condition of penis were detected. CONCLUSIONS: As proofs of seeking a remedy for diseases or recovering from diseases, anatomical organ votives are very important to understand ancient sanctuary medicine. Among male genital organ votives, very limited number of samples providing specific information on diseases provided us important information so that we can understand some ancient age diseases.

RESUMO

A 31-year-old male patient developed an ulcer on the glans penis that evolved for three months without healing. We diagnosed it as leishmaniasis using polymerase chain reaction. No immunosuppression or associated diseases were observed. The patient was treated with meglumine antimoniate that cured the lesion in a month post-treatment. Here, we report this case of cutaneous leishmaniasis lesion at the unusual location of glans penis in an immunocompetent individual. The lesion likely developed due to the bite of a vector, highlighting the need for considering cutaneous leishmaniasis among differential diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases in areas endemic for leishmaniasis.

Boron (B), an essential element for increasing seed yield and germinability in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), plays a vital role in its reproductive processes. However, effects of B stress on physiological and proteomic changes in reproductive organs related to alfalfa seed yield and germinability are poorly understood. In order to gain a better insight into B response or tolerance mechanisms, field trials were designed for B deficiency (0 mg B L-1), B sufficiency (800 mg B L-1), and B surplus (1600 mg B L-1) application during alfalfa flowering to analyze the proteomics and physiological responses of alfalfa 'Aohan' reproductive organs. Results showed that B deficiency weakened the stress-responsive ability in these organs, while B surplus reduced the sugar utilization of 'Aohan' flowers and caused lipid membrane peroxidation in 'Aohan' seeds. In addition, four upregulated stress responsive proteins (ADF-like protein, IMFP, NAD(P)-binding Rossmann-fold protein and NAD-dependent ALDHs) might play pivotal roles in the response of 'Aohan' reproductive organs to conditions of B deficiency and B surplus. All of the above results would be helpful to understand the tolerance mechanisms of alfalfa reproductive organs to both B deficiency and B surplus conditions, and also to give insight into the regulatory role of B in improving seed yield and germinability in alfalfa seed production. In summary, B likely plays a structural and regulatory role in relation to lipid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and signal transduction, thus regulates alfalfa reproductive processes eventually affecting the seed yield and germinability of alfalfa seeds.

RESUMO

A new species of the genus Zodarion Walckenaer, 1826 is described based on material collected in different regions in Algeria. Morphological, diagnostic characters and illustrations of the genitalia of both sexes are presented. The samples reveal different phenological activities for males and females, and that the species occurs in agro-ecosystem habitats.

RESUMO

A new species of Mauroniscus Bourgeois, 1911, Mauroniscus chilensis n. sp., from central Chile is described using external characters of the adult male and female including terminal segments of the abdomen and genitalia. The morphological differences of Mauroniscus chilensis n. sp. with M. maculatum Pic, 1927 are discussed.

Ten new species of the genus Stathmopoda are described: S. basirotata sp. nov., S. bicoloriptera sp. nov., S. bucera sp. nov., S. hamulata sp. nov., S. ochricolorata sp. nov., S. octacantha sp. nov., S. pyriformis sp. nov., S. rhombica sp. nov., S. tetracantha sp. nov. and S. tristriata sp. nov. Also, three species: S. citrinella Sinev, 1995, S. orbiculata Meyrick, 1913 and S. tecticochlea Terada, 2016 are newly recorded for China. Images of both adults and genitalia for the species are provided, along with a map showing the distribution of them in China.

RESUMO

Chrysozephyrus mushaellus paolongkoui, ssp. nov. is described and illustrated from Hainan island of southern China. This new subspecies possesses diagnosable characters different from previously recognized subspecies of C. mushaellus in wing marking and genitalia of both sexes. It utilizes Lithocarpus litseifolius (Fagaceae) as the larval hostplant.

RESUMO

Four monotypic genera of the tribe Siculodini are revised and adults and their genitalia illustrated for both sexes. Hepialodes Guenée, 1858, Iza Walker, 1865 and Loxiorhiza Warren, 1904 were originally described to include only one species each and they have not been subject to taxonomic revision since that time. From our study, Meskea Grote, 1877, previously with two species, becomes the monobasic Meskea horror Dyar, 1913 syn. nov. of Meskea dyspteraria Grote, 1877. These genera occur in South America, and of these only Meskea extends to the southern North America. Lectotypes are designated for Hepialodes follicula Guenée, 1858, Siculodes nubecula Guenée, 1858 and Zeuzerodes (Siculodes) cervinalis Pagenstecher, 1892.

A new clearwing moth, Paranthrenella cinnamoma sp. nov., is described from southern China. Adults and genitalia are illustrated, DNA barcodes provided, and potential damage to Cinnamomum trees (Lauraceae) is described. Paranthrenella mushana (Matsumura, 1931) comb. nov. is transferred from Synanthedon Hübner, [1819]. A checklist of the species of Paranthrenella Strand, 1916 of China is provided.

RESUMO

Representatives of some poorly known spider species collected in the rainforest litter of the Orchid Island (Taiwan) are illustrated and discussed here. A new species, Brignoliella tao sp. nov. (Fam. Tetrablemmidae), endemic to Orchid Island, is described based on both sexes. The previously unknown female of Theridiosoma triumphale Zhao Li, 2012 (Fam. Theridiosomatidae), is described for the first time. Zoma taiwanica (Zhang, Zhu Tso 2006) comb. nov., from the same family, is illustrated and its transfer from the genus Theridiosoma O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1879 to Zoma Saaristo, 1996 is proposed on the basis of morphological characters. Habitus and genitalia of the endemic species Gongylidioides angustus Tu Li, 2006 (Fam. Linyphiidae) are also illustrated.

Thespea aka, sp. nov., is described as new from Arunachal Pradesh, India. Additionally, four species are recorded for the first time from India: Melinaria pseudorepanda kalawensis (Orhant, 2000) and Parasa julikatis Solovyev Witt, 2009, recorded in Arunachal Pradesh, and Thosea lutea Heylaerts, 1890 and Mambarona congrua (Walker, 1862), recorded in Great Nicobar Island. Diagnosis and distribution are provided for all taxa listed and the males and their genitalia are illustrated.

Members of the Lamiaceae, or mint family, are used worldwide for medicinal, culinary and/or magical-religious purposes, as well as in pesticides and as ornamental plants. Very little is known about nepticulids, or pygmy moths, as leaf miners of Lamiaceae, but they may be an important component of South American diversity and potential pests of economically-important species of the mint family. In this paper, four new species of leaf-mining Nepticulidae are described from the equatorial Andes of Ecuador: S. mentholica Diskus Stonis, sp. nov., Stigmella aromatica Diskus Stonis, sp. nov., S. odora Diskus Stonis, sp. nov., feeding on Minthostachys mollis (Benth.) Griseb., and S. tomentosella Diskus Stonis, sp. nov., feeding on Clinopodium tomentosum (Kunth) Govaerts. It is hypothesized that host-plant distribution ranges can provide clues to potential distribution ranges of these newly discovered, trophically specialized leaf miners. The leaf mines, adults, and the genitalia of the new species are illustrated with photographs.

RESUMO

Leishmaniasis is a tropical infectious disease caused by Leishmania spp. protozoa and is transmitted by insects from the Phlebotominae subfamily. It can manifest as cutaneous leishmaniasis, a painless ulcer that can develop into a more serious systemic affliction as the protozoa spreads lymphatically or hematogenously, depending on the host's immunity. In this case series, the authors present a rare form of genital mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, with consideration of epidemiologic characteristics, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, and treatments offered.

Three species of the genus Frisilia Walker, 1864 are described as new: Frisilia basistricta sp. nov., F. motuoensis sp. nov. and F. trisigna sp. nov.; F. sulcata is newly recorded in China. Images of adults and genitalia for all newly described species, a key to the Chinese species, a checklist of the worldwide Frisilia species and a distribution map showing the locality of the Chinese Frisilia species are given.

A small Oriental genus Pompographa Gozmány, 1971 is reviewed, with three known species including a new species P. concaviella Park, sp. nov. described from Thailand. The recently described species from Laos, Torodora barathrona Park, 2020 is transferred to Prompographa, P. barathrona Park, comb. nov. Adult images of the three known species and genitalia of the two species, except the type species, are given.

This paper deals with seven species of Abrostola from China, among which one is new to science. The new species, Abrostola wanglangensis sp. nov., resembles Abrostola korbi Dufay, 1958 (known from Russia) and Abrostola pacifica Dufay, 1960 (known from Russia, Korean Peninsula and Japan). Adults and genitalia are illustrated.

The identities of five subspecies of Pleurota bicostella (Clerck, 1759) are studied, and each is raised from subspecies to species: P. andalusica Back, 1973, stat. nov.; P. aragonella Chrétien, 1925, stat. rev.; P. asiatica Back, 1973, stat. nov.; P. illucidella Chrétien, 1915, stat. rev.; P. lepigrei Lucas, 1937, stat. rev. Nine new Pleurota species which all belong to the P. bicostella species group are described: P. agadirensis Tabell, sp. nov.; P. aprilella Tabell, sp. n.; P. karsholti Tabell, sp. nov.; P. kullbergi Tabell, sp. nov.; P. monochroma Tabell, sp. nov.; P. murina Tabell, sp. nov.; P. paragallicella Tabell, sp. nov; P. phaeolepida Tabell, sp. nov., all from Morocco; and P. dalilae Tabell, sp. nov. from Tunisia. Adult males and females, and their genitalia are illustrated. DNA barcodes of the aforementioned species are compared with those of all other Pleurotinae available to us in the BOLD database. Each of the presented and barcoded species has a unique BIN (Barcode Index Number).

RESUMO

New diagnostic characters were used to study the genus Litoblatta Hebard: paraprocts, styles due to their shape and distribution of spines, and sclerites of the genitalia of the male with emphasis on the right complex. Male and female genitalia are described in detail. Four new species of cockroaches are described, Litoblatta elisae, Litoblatta lutea, Litoblatta misionerae, and Litoblatta tucumanae. The number of species recorded for Argentina rises to 7 and a key for male determination is provided. The geographic distribution of the studied species of cockroaches is extended.
