Introduction: The phase of the adolescence is a landmark in the life of a person; therefore, it is the time where many changes occur. In this phase, physical transformations happen such as the development of the sexual characters, corporal and stature modifications and psychological transformations, amongst others. Factors and questions appear that re-echo in the adolescent and in his/her family, beyond the search for identity and maturity and the end of this phase is a time where some decisions start being taken for the future life. Objective: To understand the living experience of hearing mothers and their deaf teenagers examining the changes faced during adolescence. Methods: The research had a qualitative approach and semi structured interviews were conducted with five mothers and their deaf teenager sons and daughters. They all attend a public rehabilitation service. Results: The results showed that deaf teenagers have similar behavior as the hearing ones. They search for their identity, emphasizing deaf identity. The mothers mentioned changes in their interests and the acquisition of typical teenager behaviors. They showed concern about their teenagers´ future, highlighting that they could study to be Sign Language interpreters, mainly because of their communicative ability in sign language. The teenagers, however, indicated different options related to their future professions. Conclusion: The teenagers seem to have a good adaptation related to the deafness, social and family living.

RESUMO

Beginning with Jung's reflections on individuation as a starting point, this article examines the analytic relationship in the context of our current reality. The latter exerts pressures of all sorts that do not favour individuation. Indeed, geopolitical commentators see present-day society as marked globally by excessive self-love that seeks to dominate, at the expense of the other. Given that such forms of dominance are now also very prevalent in the workplace, this article examines how to help the increasing number of individuals with highly successful professional careers who suffer from this pressure and who then seek analysis. 'Progressive movement', an indicator of and incentive to change, is examined by studying the narrative processes emerging from dream activity - including dreaming with the hands in the sand tray - in the co-transference. The article highlights how 'progressive movement', founded on narrative Competence and on the reflective function, may generate experiences of 'realistic hope'. The latter signals the start of an individuation process in the analytic couple and, simultaneously, the transformation of both the analyst and the analysand into good enough 'citizens in the world'.

RESUMO

Residential mobility-the change of residence within a country-is a pervasive phenomenon in 21st century societies, with the peak clearly being in young adulthood. Placing the self in geographical space has now become a major challenge for young adults, making region a key identity domain. Little is known, however, about the correlates of regional identity development. In line with the dynamic-transactional paradigm, we expected longitudinal associations between regional identity and the geographical dispersion of personal relationships. We specifically assumed that both individual experiences-such as moving-and personal relationship experiences-such as emotional closeness toward relationship partners-moderate these associations over time. Using longitudinal multilevel analyses, we found support for these hypotheses in a 3-wave longitudinal study over 1 year with 1,059 postsecondary graduates from Germany (73% female, mean age 24.53 years). Most notably, changes in regional identity were related to changes in geographical distance from personal relationship partners. Effects were robust and confirmed when controlling for diverse reasons for moving. We conclude that regional identity and personal relationships share a common developmental pathway. This pathway also points toward the relevance of geographical distance from personal relationships, even in young adults' mobile and connected world. RESUMO

Infants' ability to perform visual short-term memory (VSTM) tasks develops rapidly between 6 and 8 months. Here we tested the hypothesis that infants' VSTM performance is influenced by their ability to individuate simultaneously presented objects. We used a one-shot change detection task to ask whether 6-month-old infants (N = 47) would detect a change in the color of 1 item in a 2-item array when the stimulus context facilitated individuation of the items. In Experiment 1 the 2 items in the display differed in shape and color and in Experiment 2 the onset and offset times of the 2 items differed. In both experiments, 6-month-old infants detected a change, contrasting with previous results. Thus, young infants' encoding of information about individual items in multiple-item arrays is related to their ability to individuate those items. RESUMO

This paper opens with a personal introduction to the topic of syncretism within the context of a comparison of enlightenment associated with Eastern religious traditions and individuation as experienced through Jungian analysis. A brief exploration of the recent scholarly revival of interest in syncretism follows. Some close parallels with Jungian theory are highlighted, especially in the work of Timothy Light. Applications to the syncretic trends in Tang culture along the Silk Road(s) suggest deeper patterns of interconnectedness lie at the heart of these trends. A complex systems view highlights similarities between syncretic connections and non-local aspects of synchronistic field events. The final section attempts to extend this approach to innovation in general terms through the recently articulated concept of the 'adjacent possible' from the writing of Stuart Kauffman. From this, the notion of a collective pre-conscious dimension to the psyche is extrapolated. The unifying thread of acausal emergent forms provides a potential synthetic network for these phenomena.

RESUMO

In his writings on individuation Jung often references Eastern religions and philosophies such as Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism. This essay discusses differences and similarities between analytical psychology's concept of individuation, especially in its advanced stages, and enlightenment as expressed in such texts as Zen (Chan) Buddhism's Ten Ox-Herding Pictures. I advance the argument that important common features can be found while cultural differences must also be respected. There is here a convergence between West and East that can foster dialogue and mutuality.

RESUMO

Comparison of infant findings from the physical-reasoning and object-individuation literatures reveals a contradictory picture. On the one hand, physical-reasoning results indicate that young infants can use featural information to guide their actions on objects and to detect interaction violations (when objects interact in ways that are not physically possible) as well as change violations (when objects spontaneously undergo featural changes that are not physically possible). On the other hand, object-individuation results indicate that young infants typically cannot use featural information to detect individuation violations (when the number of objects revealed at the end of an event is less than the number of objects introduced during the event). In this article, we attempt to reconcile these two bodies of research. In a new model of early individuation, we propose that two systems help infants individuate objects in physical events: the object-file and physical-reasoning systems. Under certain conditions, disagreements between the systems result in catastrophic individuation failures, leading infants to hold no expectation at all about how many objects are present. We report experiments with 9- to 11-month-old infants (N = 216) that tested predictions from the model. After two objects emerged in alternation from behind a screen, infants detected no violation when the screen was lowered to reveal no object. Similarly, after two objects emerged in alternation from inside a box, which was then shaken, infants detected no violation when the box remained silent, as though empty. We end with new directions, suggested by our model, for research on early object representations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved).

Affective and emotional maturation implies the evolving of individuality itself. However, the individualization process in twins is more complex than the one experienced by singles because they need to separate not only from the mother but also from the co-twin. This research aimed to study the adaptive capacity in twins and relate it to their processes of separation and individualization. 12 pairs of same sex adult twins participated, who were interviewed about their life stories and evaluated by EDAO-R (Adaptive Operational Diagnostic Scale Revised). Data analysis consisted in relating the adaptive diagnosis with the individualization process experienced by co-twins. It was found that the way the co-twins were perceived, identified and assisted in their specific needs significantly has contributed to the effectiveness (or not) of their individualization and adaptation to the various sectors of life. The twins themselves suggest that parents and educators treat co-twins as different persons and seek to understand the individual characteristics of each of them....(AU)

The aim of this study was to examine the associations of Slovenian emerging adults' individuation characteristics (in relation to mother and father) with career goals and career optimism. We were interested in contributions of age, gender, certainty of study choice, and individuation dimensions when predicting intrinsic/extrinsic career goals and career optimism. The participants provided self-reports on the Individuation Test for Emerging Adults, the Career Goals Scale and the Career Futures Inventory. The results showed that age did not relate to emerging adults' career goals; however, older students reported lower career optimism than their younger counterparts. Furthermore, certainty of study choice was the most important predictor of career optimism, and, along with gender, of intrinsic career goals. Emerging adults who reported higher connectedness with both parents and self-reliance in relation to mother had higher intrinsic career goals, while self-reliance in relation to mother was positively associated with stronger optimism about an individual's future career. Fear of disappointing both parents significantly contributed to the prediction of extrinsic career goals and optimism, while parental intrusiveness did not add significantly to the prediction of the two measured career outcomes. The study confirmed the correlational effects of positive and negative aspects of individuation on career outcomes in emerging adulthood.

The author postulates the existence of a second phase of individuation during adolescence. Based on Mahler's concept of individuation, which takes place at around three years of age, culminating in the establishment of a self, differentiated from the object, he notes that for the remains of childhood and throughout latency, the ego maintains a certain dependence upan the egos of the mother and father. In adolescence, this dependence must be overcome, resulting in a separation from infantile interna! objects as well as from close family ties. This facilitates an opening up to other external links, and to society in general. In the transition from this still-dependent ego to a more consolidated and independent adult ego, a wide range of vicissitudes occur, which are analysed and illustrated clinically in their normal and pathological dimensions

In this paper, I use comparisons of Freud, Loewald, and Plato to explore what it means to individuate and to desire in a world of frustration, pain, and loss. The metaphors of the "wheel" versus the "ladder" present basic images for Freud's tragic conception of a person's emerging into a world of pain, transience and loss, in contrast to Loewald's sense of individuation as an increasing attainment of individual ego and world enrichment, constructed from metabolized grieved objects. I then argue that Plato's Symposium offers comparable visions of the possibilities of love, and that the juxtaposition of Freud and Loewald can be connected to ancient philosophical considerations. The paper begins by examining the implications of the two thinkers' treatments of the "oceanic state" (primary narcissism), then compares these to the speeches of Aristophanes and Socrates/Diotima. The conclusion touches on the relevance of the juxtaposition to the Platonic distinction between philosophy and poetry.

Two studies with preschool-age children examined the effectiveness of perceptual individuation training at reducing racial bias (Study 1, N = 32; Study 2, N = 56). We found that training preschool-age children to individuate other-race faces resulted in a reduction in implicit racial bias while mere exposure to other-race faces produced no such effect. We also showed that neither individuation training nor mere exposure reduced explicit racial bias. Theoretically, our findings provide strong evidence for a causal link between individual-level face processing and implicit racial bias, and are consistent with the newly proposed perceptual-social linkage hypothesis. Practically, our findings suggest that offering children experiences that allow them to increase their expertise in processing individual other-race faces will help reduce their implicit racial bias. RESUMO

Through commentary on four clinical vignettes, this article focuses on the anthropological transformations taking place in contemporary society, underlining their differences from the anthropologies of reference of the founding fathers of psychoanalysis. Hybridization between man and machine and the speeding up and alteration of communications which the new technologies promote are now crucial issues facing psychoanalysis. Social media and a 24/7 internet connection have produced deep changes in the way people live and perceive relationships. Analytical practice is not exempt from such issues, which can be particularly insidious, often subtle and difficult to recognize, or even underestimated or ignored by psychoanalysts outright, in order to preserve the illusion of a complete understanding of what unfolds in the analytical space. The authors suggest that such transformations, by (partially) rendering inadequate the theoretical and technical corpus on which the various depth psychologies are founded, require personal engagement on the part of psychoanalysts in the search for new strategies to treat their patients, with the consequent abandonment of the 'certainties' offered by sclerotic models of clinical procedure.
