RESUMO

This paper explores the relationship between human desire, technology, and imagination, emphasizing (1) the phenomenology of this relationship, and (2) its ontological and ecological ramifications. Drawing on the work of Bion and Winnicott, the paper will develop a psychoanalytic container for attitudes contributing to our current climate-based crisis, paying special attention to the problematic effect technology has had on our sense of time and place. Many of our technologies stunt sensuous engagement, collapse psychic space, diminish our capacity to tolerate frustration, and blind us to our dependence on worlds beyond the human. In short, our technologies trouble our relationship to our bodies and other bodies. The paper argues that omnipotent fantasies organizing our relationship to technology, to each other, and to the nonhuman world, have cocooned us in a kind of virtual reality that devastates a sense of deep obligation to the environment.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the problems of maternity idealization present in psychoanalytical theories. We adopt the book The Reproduction of Mothering as analysis' object because of its historical repercussion in psychoanalysis and feminism, as well as because of its theoretical reasoning also used in recent psychoanalytical studies about maternity. The paper allowed to show that, even starting from a feminist perspective, the analyzed book reproduces the idealization of maternity, not considering the ambivalences present in children care, not even the possibility of women not desiring to be mothers. The hypothesis worked through is that the psychoanalytical perspective that lays the foundation for the author's formulations facilitates the prescription about who can or cannot exercise the care and to reduce the importance of the social and desiring universe of the person who cares. Jean Laplanche's psychoanalysis is presented as a potentially more open alternative to diversity present in children care. We intend with this paper to show the necessity of continuous debate between psychoanalysis and social critic perspectives, as feminism, as well as to instigate the problematization of purposes of psychoanalytical theories that presently propose to discuss themes about maternity and children care...(AU).

RESUMO

The Viennese psychiatrist and philosopher Rudolf Allers (1883-1963) made important contributions to psychiatry and psychotherapy, fundamentally in relation to their anthropological foundations from a Catholic point of view. However, Allers' thought has received rather limited attention from historians of psychiatry. The present study focuses on his conception of neurosis as a metaphysical conflict from a Neoscholastic point of view: the relationship between neurosis and character; his conception of neurosis as a metaphysical conflict; and his ideas about inner transformation (metanoia) as a main therapeutic goal in the case of neurosis and its relationship with sanctity as health and as a path to recovery.

RESUMO

To build bridges between hypnosis and contemporary psychoanalysis, this article addresses how hypnosis, when used in psychotherapy, facilitates curative action through its relational essence. The author's extensive experience with hypnosis, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis orient the narrative toward the unconscious patient-therapist interaction, with particular attention paid to the ethics of the inherent hypnotic seduction. Whether used primarily in relief-oriented ways or geared toward more transformative therapeutic aims, powerful unconscious factors are in play for both patient and therapist and are explicated to illustrate the interactive and frequently unformulated, intersubjective factors that facilitate effective, psychotherapeutic hypnosis. Consequently, therapists attuned to such intersubjective dynamics can make use of their own internal mental activities to understand a patient's current state of mind and level of developmental functioning, and thereby subsequently formulate mutative interventions. For instance, because hypnotizability reflects the ability to play in imaginative space, the regression promoted in hypnotherapy may activate both an illusion of omnipotence and its optimal disillusionment through the relational context. This requires going beyond more traditional, procedural ways of bifurcating hypnotic interventions as being either direct or indirect and instead further distinguish hypnotic interventions in accordance with their maternal and paternal relational dimensions. Arguably, then, the skillful hypnotherapist needs to maintain a coupling interplay between the maternal, maximally receptive and the paternal, more active modes of functioning within hypnotic play space.

RESUMO

Daydreams and night dreams are similar in that both share the wish fulfillment aspect of dreaming. Even though the difference between day and night dreams is obvious-daydreams happen when a person is awake (conscious) and night dreams happen when a person is asleep (unconscious)-the boundary between day and night dreams becomes blurred when the ego has been severely compromised. The focus of this paper is on the analysis of daydreaming and its relationship to the ego. As in the analysis of nocturnal dreams, analysis of daydreams provides another opportunity for discovery of repressed material. Analysis of daydream material also provides an opportunity to assess the development of a patient's ego. When development of the ego has been severely compromised, daydreaming may become a mechanism of defense. A literature review is presented, followed by discussion of daydreaming and the ego. Case examples illustrate major points in the discussion.

RESUMO

Psychoanalysis has long grappled with understanding and defining termination. Freud came to some pessimistic conclusions about it toward the end of his life. Later, especially in the United States, the field developed some rigid ideas about endings in psychoanalysis. Heinz Kohut, through his wide-ranging ideas about what he came to call self psychology, brought a sense of openness, fluidity, and nonlinearity to our understanding of termination. His ideas lie scattered throughout his writings, as he never developed a coherent theory of endings in treatment. This paper brings together those thoughts and argues that Kohut prefigures more recent writings about termination, especially by self and relational psychoanalysts. It places Kohut's thoughts on termination in the context of his view of the self as tilting toward cohesion and wholeness, gently nudging the listing ship upright. Termination marks the often vague and indeterminate, yet real, point of mutual recognition of that wholeness.

This article identifies and proposes five key elements to be taken into account in analysing the reception and development of psychoanalysis in Spain under the later Franco regime and during the Transition: 1) the absence - or very limited presence - of psychoanalytic points of reference in psychiatric production during the 1950s and 1960s; 2) the connections between psychoanalysis, anti-psychiatry and structuralism; 3) the importance of the arrival in Spain of Oscar Masotta, and his 'lay' psychoanalysis, in consolidating a psychoanalytic discourse and practice outside the IPA; 4) the influence of Argentinian psychoanalysts who came to Spain following the coup d'état in their country; and 5) the importance of the Revista de la Asociación Española de Neuropsiquiatría in disseminating and communicating psychoanalysis. These five keys group together situations and processes which have been studied to varying extents, but which it seems essential to consider as a whole in order to obtain an overall view of the process. We conclude that relations between psychiatry and psychoanalysis, the circulation of knowledge, and the socio-political and cultural context, etc. explain, among other things, the characteristics of the reception and development of a post-Freudian psychoanalysis in which the Lacanian position predominated over other approaches and schools

RESUMO

In a progressive maternity clinic in Paris, "Les Bluets", the team and the psychoanalyst work to create a supportive atmosphere, so that the newborn infant and the new parents can receive a respectful welcome with a holding environment. The main participants around the newborn are the parents, midwives, and nurses, and the team members share their observations about how to answer the infant's needs, and adjust and satisfy his/her comfort. This meets what Ferenczi describes as tenderness. Specific, detailed feedback is given so the experience of mother-father-baby cooperation can start to take place from the very beginning. In case the baby is left for adoption, he/she is treated with even more attentive caregiving where all the details are very important.

RESUMO

The importance of human relations in understanding and treating trauma is evident not only from the severity of traumatization inflicted by human agency and the dissociation that ensues from traumatic interpersonal relations, but also from the analyst's affective participation which is essential to the reparation of the serious psychopathologies that originate in traumatization. Developing Ferenczi's theorizations, on the identification with the aggressor, I propose that after the abuse the traumatized subject identifies partly with the persecutor and partly with the victim, which sometimes is represented by the body itself, becoming the object of the destructiveness. Such unconscious identifications are accompanied by the dynamics of experiencing complex feelings of guilt and shame (the victim side) and the aggressiveness and anger, (the persecutor/persecuting side). It was Ferenczi who first described the potential for a therapist, acting benevolently and supportively as sole witness, to create the preconditions for the patient to re-contact long-dissociated parts, thanks to the implicit non-verbal and corporal exchange, a concept which is here explained as embodied testimony/witnessing and enactment, and unconscious communication of the right hemispheres of therapist and patient.

RESUMO

This article explores the question of "Left fascism," which emerged in relation to discussions around the Student Movement in the German Federal Republic in the crucial decade between 1967-1977. The term was originally coined by Jürgen Habermas in a lecture entitled "The Phantom Revolution and its Children" in which he suggests that the extreme voluntarism of the students could not but be characterized as "Left fascist." Such a characterization becomes the basis for a vitally important exchange of letters between Herbert Marcuse and Theodor W. Adorno from January to August of 1969 on the relation between theory and praxis. After first sketching Adorno's conception of the "authoritarian personality," with the help of Sándor Ferenczi's concept of the "identification with the aggressor," the article proceeds to examine the exchange of the letters between Adorno and Marcuse, illustrating Adorno's changed orientation: that "fascism" or "authoritarianism" maybe either left or right. Finally, some conclusions are drawn about the authoritarian tendencies of the contemporary Left.

RESUMO

Ferenczi's deviations from Freudian thinking have caused enormous controversy. This paper re-examines Ferenczi's theoretical and technical innovations through the lens of Orpha-one of his most characteristic and valuable contributions, the culmination point of his thought, and the leitmotif of his work. So far research on Ferenczi's Orpha concept has been relatively sparse and there is still much obscurity about this term that he adopted from or co-created with his "evil genius" Elizabeth Severn. The following paper will attempt to shed more light on the origin, evolution, functions, and the philosophical foundations of the Orpha concept. Along with the theoretical, therapeutic and philosophical aspects, this point of view will enable a better understanding of the poetic value and the lyricism of Ferenczi's work. Orphic harmony-the fusion of Dionysian ecstasy and Apollonian clarity into the "principal instinct of tranquility" proclaimed by Ferenczi in 1930 and into the "primordial chant of cosmic unity" (Herder), emerges as the essence of the Ferenczian work and worldview.

RESUMO

The article intends to show how Ferenczi is a genuine precursor for many of the themes which lie at the center of the current psychoanalytic debate and, for this reason, how he is the classical and the contemporary psychoanalyst par excellence, especially by the way he has progressively understood and learnt to operate with the patients focusing on working-through the mutual feelings engendered by the therapeutic process.

RESUMO

This paper, in its first part, offers historical and clinical research that aims to establish, in a new frame, forms of organizing psychoanalytic theories on psychopathology and its accompanying healing strategies. This new frame is based in two matrices ("Freudo-Kleinian" and "Ferenczian") and it organizes the wide knowledge established by different authors of the psychoanalytic field. Therefore, it recognizes the innovative proposals of the last three decades as transmatricial ones, in which the Freudo-Kleinian lineage and Ferenczian lineage are recognized as supplementary dimensions. In the second part, the paper describes some possible origins of one of the most relevant transmatricial thoughts in contemporary psychoanalysis, namely, Thomas Ogden's work. To the question of what would be the path that leads back from Ogden's conception of "dreaming the analytic session" to Ferenczi's final clinical intersubjective proposals, the hypothesis offered is that it passes, retroactively, through the works of Robert Langs, Harold Searles, Willy and Madeleine Baranger and Wilfred Bion.

RESUMO

Narcissism is a recurring topic of psychoanalysis since its beginningand has gained a place in everyday language of modern societies. However, there still exist gaps and limitations in our knowledge ofnarcissistic personality disorder (NPD), which presents the need forbetter integration of already existent theoretical conceptualisations ofthe disorder. In the present paper, we have examined the theories of,Otto Kernberg and Heinz Kohut, the two most influential, howeverdisagreeing, psychoanalytic thinkers on the topic. For the purpose ofthe comparative review, we have examined multiple convergences anddivergences of their theories. We have examined the development ofnormal narcissism of infancy and childhood, which is essential forhealthy development of the individual; characteristics and course ofpathology conceptualisation, in which we also addressed the cause andsource of the pathology; attitudes and behaviours relating to objectrelations; classification of the pathology; and treatment applications. The review indicates that, despite divergences, both theories represent avaluable theoretical perspective of the disorder, which can be observedin the modern application of these theories in different evidence basedpsychoanalytic treatments.

RESUMO

The film Logan, in conjunction with other films in the X-Men series, can be read as both a portrait of midlife and as the keystone in an expansive critique of group relations. A family of concepts related to generativity, identified by Erik Erikson, is used to interpret this unusually mature instance of the superhero movie. Individuals and societies that stumble over the task of becoming generative may be expected to fall into despair or extremes of pseudo-speciation: the treatment of particular groups as so radically different from one's own that they are beyond the scope of care. This essay traces the evolution of Logan toward greater generativity and care, and contrasts his character with others from the series who exemplify successes and failures in this task. Real-life vicissitudes of generativity are also discussed in relation to survivors of the Holocaust and other contemporary groups that may be treated as pseudo-species.
