RESUMO

Abstract Introduction: Bibliometric analyses of research in Sri Lanka, a lower-middle income island nation in South Asia, has focused mainly on medical research, concluding that there is a need for increased research productivity and impact, and for local solutions to health concerns. There has been no general bibliometric analysis across scientific disciplines in the nation, or any study that covers a long period of time to identify general time trends. Objective: To measure and analyse Sri Lanka research by focusing on subjects, authors, institutions, journals and citation for half a century. Methods: We used an advanced search method to extract publications with the word "Sri Lanka" in the SCI-EXPANDED, and calculated indicators such as total citations from Web of Science Core Collection since publication year to the end of 2019, citations in 2019, and mean citations per publication. Journal data were taken from 2019 Journal Citation Report. Affiliation re-classification was done to ensure consistency regarding the origin of all publications. Publications were further analysed based on collaboration, and first and corresponding authorship. Results: We retrieved 16 069 publications in 19 document types (77 % articles). Corrections had the highest number of authors per publication (616) followed by articles (116). Four articles had more than 5 000 authors and 593 articles had more than 1 000 authors. The highest citations in this database were for international megaprojects where Sri Lanka authors played minor roles. The UK had the most collaborative articles with Sri Lanka (19 %). The articles were published in 3 051 journals across 177 Web of Science categories. The category of Public, environmental and occupational health, with 193 journals, had 6.7 % of all articles, followed by environmental sciences (6.6 %). Conclusion: Sri Lanka has an unusually strong pattern of participating as small role players in international megaprojects about health and physics. Sri Lanka authors should be encouraged to expand their horizons by researching non-applied fields that are the basis of all innovation; to strengthen their own journals so that they have better visibility and impact, and to improve their positions in international projects that are published in larger journals.

Abstract Introduction: Sudan is the third largest country in Africa and has rich reserves of petroleum and other ground resources, but its per capita Gross Domestic Product is only $808 and researchers work in insufficient institutional facilities and with little funding. Previous studies about its scientific productivity have been limited to specific subjects and relatively short periods, with no large analyses until now. Objective: To analyze the scientific output of Sudan in depth, considering all research areas and several decades of scientific activity. Methods: We retrieved the documents with "Sudan" in field country in the Science Citation Index Expanded for the period 1900-2019. Results: We retrieved over 9 000 publications and found that most were articles; that citation was higher for review articles and book chapters, and that this index mostly covered articles in English. Beginning in 1972, the number of publications in this database has increased rapidly. The citation lifespan indicates slow growth in the Sudanese scientific literature, and collaboration is frequent both nationally and internationally, possibly because the scarce resources make collaboration almost compulsory. Most external collaboration is done with Saudi Arabia but citation is higher for articles resulting from international megaprojects, led by Europe and the USA, in which Sudanese researchers play secondary roles. Research focusses on applied technological subjects with little innovation value. Women play a smaller role in Sudanese science. Conclusions: Our recommendations for Sudanese science include increasing the number of women in leading research positions; providing funding directly to researchers (i.e., bypassing bureaucratic bodies); increasing basic research to avoid stagnation; training Sudanese researchers for leading positions; and identifying specific research areas where Sudan can lead in its region.

Background: Considerations for palliative care and quality of death has significantly increased over the past 10 years in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). Recent trends in ageing and increasing chronic disease burden have drawn attention to the need to pay attention to the concept of good death and related factors from the perspective of the local population. Aims: To assess the factors related to good death in the EMR. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest on 22 October 2021 for English language articles, with no time limit, using keywords "quality of death", "good death", "quality of dying", "good dying", "Middle Eastern", and countries in the Region. The quality of articles was evaluated using the Hawker criterion and based on the PRISMA guidelines. From the thematic analysis, the factors influencing good death were extracted. EndNote X8 software was used for data management. Results: The search yielded 55 articles, and 14 were included in the study, with a total of 3589 participants. Factors related to good death were classified into 2 main categories: patient preferences and end-of-life care. The former was divided into 4 groups: symptom management, psychological support, social support, and spiritual care. The second category included 2 subcategories: death control and patient autonomy, and end-of-life care. Conclusion: Although patients' beliefs about good death are personal, unique, and different, perception about good death in the EMR depends on the extent to which patients' preferences are met and end-of-life care is provided. More research on good death is recommended in the context of Islamic countries in EMR, and to empower patients and their families to better manage the dying process and create educational programmes.

RESUMO

The National Policy of Comprehensive Health of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transvestites and Transsexuals (LGBT) was an important step in the search for equity. The lack of specific research can be an obstacle for the design of strategies that address LGBT health needs. The objective of this study is to map and characterize the Brazilian scientific production on the LGBT population health. We used the rapid scoping review methodology to perform a thematic and bibliometric analysis. We included Brazilian researchers' studies published in scientific journals. Searches were carried out in four databases, with inclusion of 381 articles in the analysis. The results indicate that Brazilian production about the health of LGBT has increased over time, particularly from 2016, but there are some gaps in specific needs and vulnerabilities within the subgroups of people covered by the acronyms LGBTQIA+. Despite the advances launched from the National Policy of Health Integral LGBT, there are still many gaps in Brazilian scientific production, which could be included in the agenda of priorities for promoting research.

The article presents a perspective on the Brazilian scientific production on the health of the black population (SPN) published in scientific journals. We performed a rapid scoping review combined with thematic and bibliometric analysis. Our search included four indexed databases. We retrieved 519 studies in line with the thematic axes and strategic underlying themes of the Agenda of Research Priorities of the Ministry of Health and the guidelines of the National Policy for the Comprehensive Health of the Black Population. The data mainly returned quantitative studies published from 1969 to 2022. Sixty-five of the selected studies were explicitly about the black population and 54 about the quilombola population. The analysis of the most recurrent terms in the titles of the selected studies evidenced that epidemiological aspects and health and disease conditions prevailed. We observed limitations in the currently available indexing descriptors, which do not cover the most conceptually appropriate terminology. This paper consolidates knowledge about the SPN-related scientific production. It supports the discussion on a propositional priority research agenda to improve health policies for this population, overcome racism, and denounce rights violations.

The scope of this research outlines the field of study on public health policies for youth supported by bibliometric maps, from the perspective of identifying research gaps. VOSviewer software was used based on the exploratory-descriptive profile, with data located in October 2021, using the key words "public", "youth", "health" with the connecting "and", which resulted in 172 articles. The following groupings were located: co-authorship by country; co-authorship by key words; co-quote by article; co-quote by reference cited; bibliographic coupling; co-quote of authors. The results reveal an interdisciplinary field, represented by studies in the areas of education, social work, law, and social sciences, with a significant recurrence of the themes of mental health, violence, and obesity, as well as discussions on substance use and abuse, such as cigarette smoking for example. Debates about the social configuration, defined by the idea of community, as well as its prevalence and prevention are present in the scope of these studies. Finally, eight research agenda topics are derived from the discussion about the growing movement towards health promotion as a public policy, while socio-economic and cultural aspects are presented with greater emphasis, in the quest to understand the impacts of this scenario for youth.

BACKGROUND: With the development of digital pathology and the renewal of deep learning algorithm, artificial intelligence (AI) is widely applied in tumor pathology. Previous researches have demonstrated that AI-based tumor pathology may help to solve the challenges faced by traditional pathology. This technology has attracted the attention of scholars in many fields and a large amount of articles have been published. This study mainly summarizes the knowledge structure of AI-based tumor pathology through bibliometric analysis, and discusses the potential research trends and foci. METHODS: Publications related to AI-based tumor pathology from 1999 to 2021 were selected from Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer and Citespace were mainly used to perform and visualize co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis of countries, institutions, authors, references and keywords in this field. RESULTS: A total of 2753 papers were included. The papers on AI-based tumor pathology research had been continuously increased since 1999. The United States made the largest contribution in this field, in terms of publications (1138, 41.34%), H-index (85) and total citations (35,539 times). We identified the most productive institution and author were Harvard Medical School and Madabhushi Anant, while Jemal Ahmedin was the most co-cited author. Scientific Reports was the most prominent journal and after analysis, Lecture Notes in Computer Science was the journal with highest total link strength. According to the result of references and keywords analysis, "breast cancer histopathology" "convolutional neural network" and "histopathological image" were identified as the major future research foci. CONCLUSIONS: AI-based tumor pathology is in the stage of vigorous development and has a bright prospect. International transboundary cooperation among countries and institutions should be strengthened in the future. It is foreseeable that more research foci will be lied in the interpretability of deep learning-based model and the development of multi-modal fusion model.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To analyze global trends in focus and funding of research related to high tibial osteotomy (HTO) and to identify the 100 most cited articles in this field. METHODS: A Web of Science search was used to identify HTO publications in English-language scientific journals from January 1967 till February 3th, 2021. Results were filtered to the 100 most cited articles by reading the abstract or full-text paper. Information of these articles was recorded for further analysis. The 10 top-cited articles during the last 5 years and the 10 top-cited articles about HTO ranked by average citations per year were selected to predict research trends. RESULTS: In all, 48 out of the 100 top-cited articles were published between 2000 and 2010. The United States of America was the primary contributor (n = 29) followed by Germany (n = 17) and Japan (n = 11). The total number of citations per article ranged from 65 to 563, median 108, mean 135 (standard deviation = 84). The American Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery accounted for 23 out of the 100 top-cited articles. Koshino T was the most cited author (603 citations). The most frequently highlighted study theme was prognostic research. Patient-based clinical research was the dominant study design (85%). The majority of articles (48 out of 100) were level IV evidence with a mean of 141 (standard deviation = 97) citations. Top-cited articles in the last 5 years focused on open wedge osteotomy. CONCLUSION: Technical optimization of open wedge osteotomy has emerged as the main area of research in HTO. More specifically, recent publications focus on the surgical technology, cartilage repair and new fixation devices. Besides, papers with a high level of evidence are needed for the development of HTO.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuro developmental disorder that affects children and adolescents. It is estimated that the prevalence of ADHD is 7.2% throughout the world. There have been a number of articles published in the literature related to ADHD. However, it remains unclear which countries, journals, subject categories, and articles have the greatest influence. The purpose of this study was to display influential entities in 100 top-cited ADHD-related articles (T100ADHD) on an alluvial plot and apply alluvial to better understand the network characteristics of T100ADHD across entities. METHODS: Using the PubMed and Web of Science (WoS) databases, T100ADHD data since 2011 were downloaded. The dominant entities were compared using alluvial plots based on citation analysis. Based on medical subject headings (MeSH terms) and research areas extracted from PubMed and WoS, social network analysis (SNA) was performed to classify subject categories. To examine the difference in article citations among subject categories and the predictive power of MeSH terms on article citations in T100ADHD, one-way analysis of variance and regression analysis were used. RESULTS: The top 3 countries (the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands) accounted for 75% of T100ADHD. The most citations per article were earned by Brazil (=415.33). The overall impact factor (IF = citations per 100) of the T100ADHD series is 188.24. The most cited article was written by Polanczyk et al from Brazil, with 772 citations since 2014. The majority of the articles were published and cited in Biol Psychiatry (13%; IF = 174.15). The SNA was used to categorize 6 subject areas. On the alluvial plots, T100ADHD's network characteristics were successfully displayed. There was no difference in article citations among subject categories (F = 1.19, P = .320). The most frequently occurring MeSH terms were physiopathology, diagnosis, and epidemiology. A significant correlation was observed between MeSH terms and the number of article citations (F = 25.36; P < .001). CONCLUSION: Drawing the alluvial plot to display network characteristics in T100ADHD was a breakthrough. Article subject categories can be classified using MeSH terms to predict T100ADHD citations. Bibliometric analyses of 100 top-cited articles can be conducted in the future.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease, which is well known for its poor symptoms, and the incidence is increasing worldwide. Although conventional medicines are practiced initially, patients often move or accompany to complementary and alternative medicines for better outcomes. Herbal medications, one of traditional medicinal approach, are widely used in clinical conditions. However, no research has broadly reviewed the current research trends regarding the scope of herbal medicines in RA. The aim of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of applications of herbal medicine for RA from 1991 to the present. METHODS: We retrieved literature on herbal medicine for RA from the Web of Science database from 1991 to 2021. The VOSviewer program was used to analyze keywords, authors, countries, and organizations through visual knowledge mapping to assess the research hotspots and trends. RESULTS: A total of 516 articles were included in the analysis, which showed an increasing trend in the number of publications over time. Four clusters were identified from the keyword analysis: complementary and alternative medicine cluster, mechanism of the pain cluster, control for the pain cluster, and recent research trend cluster. People's Republic of China published 250 articles, which was the greatest number of publications, followed by the United States of America (82 articles) and South Korea (52 articles). Furthermore, Moudgil, KD of the University of Maryland published 15 articles about the mechanism of herbal medicine on autoimmune arthritis and their interaction with various drugs. Lu, AP of the Hong Kong Baptist University published 14 articles about herbal medicine interactions. On an institutional level, the China Academy of Chinese Medical Science published 33 articles, followed by the Hong Kong Baptist University and the University of Maryland with 27 and 20 articles, respectively. Clusters of organizations from the People's Republic of China and the United States of America revealed higher average citations for earlier average publication years. CONCLUSIONS: This bibliometric study identified trends in herbal medicine for RA from 1991 to 2021, which may guide the hot topics and future directions in this research field.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To describe and map scientific literature related to alcohol consumption, its determinants, governance, harm and control policies by publication output, author affiliations, funding, countries of study and research themes. DESIGN: Bibliometric analysis using performance analysis and science mapping techniques. DATA SOURCES: Scientific articles. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Indexed scientific articles published between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2021 with an English abstract focused on alcohol consumption, its determinants, harms, governance and control policies. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Searches were run in Web of Science and PubMed. Performance metrics were analysed using descriptive statistics. Keywords were used for science mapping in a deductive approach to cluster articles by five main research themes. The 'policy response' theme was further analysed by six subthemes. RESULTS: 4553 articles were included in the analysis. Three out of four articles (3479/4553, 76.4%) were authored solely by authors affiliated with HIC institutions. One in five articles (906/4553, 19.9%) had at least one author affiliated to an institution from an upper-middle-income, middle-income or low-income country context. Governments, followed by research institutions, were the predominant funding source. Half (53.1%) studied a single country and, of these, 77.0% were high-income countries (HICs). Australia, USA and UK were the most studied countries, together accounting for 44.9% (975/2172) of country-specific articles. Thematically, 'consumption' was most studied, and 'alcohol determinants', least. 'Policy response' articles were predominately conducted in HIC contexts. CONCLUSIONS: Although the attributable harm of alcohol is known to affect more significantly lower-income and middle-income countries, scientific publications primarily report on HIC contexts by authors from HICs. Research themes reflect known cost-effective policy actions, though skewed towards HICs and a focus on consumption. The implementation of context-specific alcohol control policies requires addressing the determinants of the uneven geographical and thematic distribution of research.

RESUMO

The evolution of complex in vitro models of the human gastrointestinal system to interrogate the biochemical functionality of the gut microbiome has augmented our understanding of its role in human physiology and pathology. With 5718 authors from 52 countries, gut bioreactor research reflects the growing awareness of our need to understand the contribution of the gut microbiome to human health. Although a large body of knowledge has been generated from in vitro models, it is scattered and defined by application-specific terminologies. To better grasp the capacity of bioreactors and further our knowledge of the human gastrointestinal system, we have conducted a cross-field bibliometric search and mapped the evolution of human gastrointestinal in vitro research. We present reference material with the aim of identifying key authors and bioreactor types to enable researchers to make decisions regarding the choice of method for simulating the human gut in the context of microbiome functionality.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Exposure to excessive heat can impact kidney health. Climate change is projected to aggravate this impact. An analysis of articles published between 1958 and 2021 was conducted to explore the progress of the research on this issue. METHODS: This study included a bibliometric analysis wherein Web of Science was used to generate a list of all published articles related to the impact of heat on kidney health. Basic information about the articles, such as titles, authors' names, keywords, and citations, were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 226 published articles related to the impact of heat on kidney health were identified as of November 20, 2021. Most of these articles (93%) were published within the last decade. The United States was the most prominent country in terms of research productivity and collaboration. Researchers from the United States were well represented among the top 20 contributors of published articles on the study issue. The productivity of the top 20 authors varied between 6 and 32 articles each. A total of 25 common words used by the authors were identified. The most frequently used keywords were chronic kidney disease, heat stress, acute kidney injury, Mesoamerican nephropathy, and climate change. Keyword analysis revealed 3 distinct major research clusters in the existing scientific research on the impact of heat on kidney health: chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology, heat stress and renal physiology, and the effect of climate change on kidney health. CONCLUSIONS: Research on heat-related kidney injury has witnessed rapid development in recent decades, motivated by the emergence of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology and climate change. Developing countries in hot regions must increase their productivity in this research area through international collaboration and partnerships.
