BACKGROUND: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is women's most common form of alopecia. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of extracorporeal shock waves for hair growth and regeneration in women with FPHL. METHODS: A prospective single-center noncontrolled study was conducted in patients with FPHL who underwent eight treatment sessions with C-Actor, a shock wave applicator. Outcome measures included total hair count, number of follicular units (FUs)-single FUs, double FUs, triple and bigger FUs-the average thickness, cumulative hair thickness, and changes in the Derived Sinclair scale, assessed with Tricholab (Fotofinder System). Patients completed a survey to assess their subjective perceptions of hair improvement regarding softness, hair loss, quality, and volume. RESULTS: Twenty women were included with a mean age of 43 (SD = 5.65). The mean increase in total hair count was 8.9% (p < 0.00001), in number of FUs 4.6% (p = 0.00031), in number of triple and bigger FUs 18.4% (p = 0.0004), in cumulative hair thickness 8.0% (p < 0.00001), with a decrease of 5.7% in mean Derived Sinclair scale value by 2.2-2.1 (p < 0.0001). After 3 months, 85% of patients perceived improvement in hair volume. CONCLUSION: Extracorporeal shock waves for hair growth and capillary regeneration in women with FPHL showed statistically significant outcomes, and all patients reported an improvement in hair characteristics.

Follicular unit hair extraction (FUE) is effective for hair restoration but is less successful on scarred tissue due to reduced vascularity and altered tissue architecture. Stem cell therapy can enhance tissue regeneration, possibly improving FUE outcomes on scarred tissue. This study investigated the impact of stem cell therapy prior to FUE on scarred tissue. Sixty patients with scalp scars from trauma or previous surgeries were divided into two groups. Group A (n = 30) received autologous stem cell therapy followed by FUE, while Group B (n = 30) underwent FUE without prior stem cell treatment. Autologous stem cells were harvested from patients' adipose tissue and injected into the scarred area four weeks before FUE. Outcomes were assessed at 3-, 6-, and 12-months post-transplantation, focusing on hair density, graft survival rate, and patient satisfaction. Histological examinations evaluated tissue regeneration. Group A showed significantly higher hair density (mean increase of 45%) and graft survival rates (87%) compared to Group B (mean increase of 25%, graft survival rate of 60%) at all follow-up points (P < 0.05). Histological analysis revealed enhanced neovascularization and reduced fibrosis in the stem cell-treated group, with 70% more new blood vessels and 50% less fibrotic tissue compared to the control group. Patient satisfaction scores were higher in Group A (average score of 8.5 out of 10) versus Group B (6.0), indicating better aesthetic outcomes and reduced scar visibility. Pre-treatment with autologous stem cell therapy significantly improved FUE effectiveness on scarred tissue, enhancing graft survival, hair density, and patient satisfaction. Further research is recommended to optimize this therapeutic strategy.

Compared with the traditional gel electrode, the dry electrode is being taken more seriously in bioelectrical recording because of its easy preparation, long-lasting ability, and reusability. However, the commonly used dry AgCl electrodes and silver cloth electrodes are generally hard to record through hair due to their flat contact surface. Claw electrodes can contact skin through hair on the head and body, but the internal claw structure is relatively hard and causes discomfort after being worn for a few hours. Here, we report a conductive Velcro electrode (CVE) with an elastic hook hair structure, which can collect biopotential through body hair. The elastic hooks greatly reduce discomfort after long-time wearing and can even be worn all day. The CVE electrode is fabricated by one-step immersion in conductive silver paste based on the cost-effective commercial Velcro, forming a uniform and durable conductive coating on a cluster of hook microstructures. The electrode shows excellent properties, including low impedance (15.88 kΩ @ 10 Hz), high signal-to-noise ratio (16.0 dB), strong water resistance, and mechanical resistance. After washing in laundry detergent, the impedance of CVE is still 16% lower than the commercial AgCl electrodes. To verify the mechanical strength and recovery capability, we conducted cyclic compression experiments. The results show that the displacement change of the electrode hook hair after 50 compression cycles was still less than 1%. This electrode provides a universal acquisition scheme, including effective acquisition of different parts of the body with or without hair. Finally, the gesture recognition from electromyography (EMG) by the CVE electrode was applied with accuracy above 90%. The CVE proposed in this study has great potential and promise in various human-machine interface (HMI) applications that employ surface biopotential signals on the body or head with hair.

The mercury pollution status in the northwestern Sea of Okhotsk remains largely unexplored. In this study, hair samples were collected from 40 bearded seals harvested between August and October 2021 in the region. Total mercury (THg) concentrations in the samples exhibited a wide range from 137 to 1885 ng/g (median: 407 ng/g). While no significant differences in THg concentrations were found between male and female seals, distinctions were observed between young and potentially mature seals. Stable nitrogen isotope analysis indicated that juveniles and mature adults did not differ, although sample sizes were limiting. The higher THg concentrations in juveniles were attributed to variations in the seals' diets and/or variations in foraging locations during the juvenile stage which likely contribute to THg differences due to greater seasonal migration to offshore habitats. Notably, THg levels in bearded seals from the northwestern Sea of Okhotsk were lower in comparison to other pinniped species in the North Pacific. These findings, representing the first dataset for this pinniped species in the Russian segment of its habitat, contribute insights into mercury exposure in the Sea of Okhotsk mammalian population.

Human skin samples for microbiome analysis are traditionally collected using a non-invasive swabbing method. Here, we compared the differences in bacterial community structures on scalp hair and scalps with samples collected using non-invasive swabbing and cutting/removal of scalp hair in 12 individuals. Hair-related samples, such as hair shafts and hair swabs, had significantly higher alpha diversity than scalp swab samples, whereas there were no significant differences between hair shafts and hair swabs. The relative abundances of the three major phyla and five major operational taxonomic units were not significantly different between the hair shaft and hair swab samples. The principal coordinate analysis plots based on weighted UniFrac distances were grouped into two clusters: samples from hair-related areas and scalp swabs, and there were significant differences only between samples from hair-related areas and scalp swabs. In addition, a weighted UniFrac analysis revealed that the sampling site-based category was a statistical category but not a hair sampling method-based category. These results suggest that scalp hair bacteria collected using non-invasive swab sampling were comparable to those collected cutting/removal of scalp hair.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents experience high levels of loneliness, which is linked to poor health in adulthood. Loneliness may contribute to poor health through chronic dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. In this analysis, we examined the associations between survey- and ecological momentary assessment (EMA)-based measures of loneliness and hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) in a sample of 1102 adolescents and assessed sex differences in this relationship. METHODS: Data came from wave 1 of the Adolescent Health and Development in Context study. We conducted a series of multivariable linear regression models to examine the associations between loneliness and HCC. Models were adjusted for adolescent and caregiver demographics, adolescent clinical factors, adolescent hair care practices, and adolescent lifetime mental health diagnosis and current psychotropic medication use. An interaction term between sex and loneliness was added to assess for effect moderation. RESULTS: In our sample, the mean HCC was 1.35â¯pg/mg (SD=1.1). The mean for the unstandardized survey loneliness measure was 1.79 (SD=0.79) for the total analytic sample. The unstandardized mean for the EMA loneliness measure was - 0.02 (SD=2.1) for the total analytic sample. In model one testing the bivariate linear relationship between loneliness and HCC, higher loneliness via survey and EMA measures was associated with lower HCC (Survey: b= - 0.10, SE=0.03, p=.004; EMA: b= - 0.09, SE=0.03, p=.005). In model two, higher loneliness remained significantly associated with lower HCC (Survey: b= - 0.07, SE=0.03, p=.023; EMA: b= - 0.07, SE=0.03, p=.037), after controlling for the following covariates: sociodemographic factors, pubertal development and BMI, corticosteroid use, hair care practices, season of collection and assayed hair length. In model 3, youth lifetime mental health diagnosis and current psychotropic medication use were added into the regression model, and higher loneliness remained significantly associated with lower HCC (Survey: b= - 0.07, SE=0.03, p=.029; EMA: b= - 0.07, SE=0.03, p=.039). There was no effect modification by sex (Survey: b=0.04, SE=0.06, p=.552; EMA: b= - 0.01, SE=0.06, p=.843). CONCLUSIONS: In our analysis, both survey- and EMA-reported loneliness measures were associated with lower HCC. No evidence of an interaction between sex and loneliness was observed. Future research is needed to validate these findings and investigate longitudinal relationships among adolescent loneliness, stress physiology, and downstream health sequelae.

Objective: Asylum seekers often experience ethnic discrimination on the flight or in the host country, which may be associated with chronic stress and impaired mental health. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, a known physiological correlate of chronic stress, can be assessed using hair cortisol concentrations (HCC). The present study aimed to investigate how different forms of perceived ethnic discrimination are associated with mental health outcomes, HCC, and protective factors in asylum seekers living in Germany.Methods: Somatic symptoms (PHQ-15), symptoms of posttraumatic stress (PDS), depressive symptoms (PHQ-9), different forms of ethnic discrimination (active harm, passive harm, institutional discrimination), and protective factors (in-group identification, social support) were assessed cross-sectionally in 144 asylum seekers (average age 32 years, average duration of stay in Germany nine months; 67% men). HCC were obtained from 68 participants. Multiple regression analyses were conducted and social support and in-group identification were tested as potential moderators.Results: Active ethnic discrimination was positively associated with all assessed mental health outcomes, and all forms of ethnic discrimination positively correlated with depressive symptoms. Ethnic discrimination was not associated with HCC. When controlling for other possible influences (e.g. age, gender, traumatic events), passive harm was negatively associated with depressive symptoms (ß = -0.17, p = .033) and active harm was positively associated (ß = 0.28, p = .022) with somatic symptoms. After the inclusion of the protective factors, the associations were no longer significant. Lower social support was associated with higher depressive symptoms (ß = -0.35, p < .001), posttraumatic stress (ß = -0.77, p < .001), and somatic symptoms (ß = -0.32, p < .001), but did not moderate the associations between ethnic discrimination and the mental health outcomes.Conclusions: Perceived ethnic discrimination may negatively influence asylum seekers' mental health but does not seem to be associated with HCC. Social support was associated with psychological symptom severity, but did not buffer the effects of ethnic discrimination on mental health.
The study examined the relationship between ethnic and institutional discrimination, protective factors (social support and in-group identification), hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) and mental health in asylum seekers.Ethnic discrimination was associated with mental health outcomes and social support, but not with HCC.Lower social support was associated with higher depressive and somatic symptoms, but did not moderate the relationship between ethnic discrimination and mental health.

Hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) are measured to assess long-term HPA-axis activity and may represent a valuable non-invasive tool to evaluate chronic stress in cats. This study investigated combing as a novel, low-stress method for HCC assessment, as well as possible associations between HCC and cat characteristics in 167 owned cats. Hair was sampled at veterinary clinics through clipping and/or combing the cat, or at home by the owner combing the cat. A questionnaire was sent to cat owners, including inquiries about the cat's sex, health status, and exposure to stress. HCC was quantified using a commercial cortisol assay kit. Despite variations within and between sampling methods, Spearman's correlation and Bland-Altman plots revealed a moderate correlation between clipped and combed samples (rs = 0.61, LOA -5.51 ± 22.54). In multiple linear regression, variations in HCC were observed based on sex, health status and cat group size. No associations were found between HCC and stress as assessed by owners. Despite study limitations and remaining uncertainty regarding factors influencing HCC, combing presents a convenient approach for evaluating long-term HPA-axis activity in clinical settings. The association between health and HCC suggests alterations in cortisol levels that are related to disease processes and stress-inducing events associated with the disease.

LDOM has enhanced treatment options for female AGA, yet its combined efficacy with therapies such as spironolactone, finasteride, or dutasteride remains inadequately explored. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of LDOM in combination with spironolactone versus LDOM with finasteride or dutasteride in women with AGA. Our analysis revealed that both combination therapies produced similar improvements in hair growth and had comparable safety profiles. Although the LDOM with finasteride/dutasteride group showed a greater average increase in hair width and density, these differences were not statistically significant. These results endorse the use of LDOM in combination with either spironolactone or finasteride/dutasteride for female AGA, and underscore the necessity for further research to validate these findings and assess long-term treatment outcomes.

Interpersonal closeness has important health benefits; however, recent work suggests that in certain contexts, closeness can come at a cost. In the current study, curvilinear relations between mother-child closeness and health (e.g., depressive and anxiety symptoms and hair cortisol concentrations [HCC]) were tested. Our sample consisted of 117 mother (Mage = 36.86) and child (Mage = 73.07 months, 50.86% male) dyads. A quadratic relationship between maternal perceived closeness with their child and self-reported depressive and anxiety symptoms, along with overall hair cortisol output, was hypothesized. Path analysis suggested that the quadratic term was predictive of maternal cortisol (ß = 0.28, p = 0.001) and depression (ß = 0.23, p = 0.014), such that both high and low perceived closeness predict greater maternal depressive symptoms and HCCs as compared to moderate levels of closeness. Results are discussed in terms of parenting support and burnout.

Chronic psychosocial stress is known to adversely impact immune function. During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, occupational stress among workers in healthcare was at an unprecedented level due to risks of infection and work demands. We performed a nested case-control study to investigate the associations between chronic stress and the risks of contracting SARS-CoV-2. We collected 3 cm of hair from employees at an academic medical center who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 (N = 49) and controls who tested negative (N = 49), matched for age, race, and sex. The diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 was based on polymerase chain reaction or antibody tests. As a proxy for chronic stress, we segmented hair into 1 cm sections each representing one month and measured cortisol levels using a cortisol enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. For cases, we used cortisol concentrations measured in hair segments from the month prior to a positive SARS-CoV-2 test, and for controls, we used time-matched hair segments. We fitted conditional logistic regression models adjusted for sex, age, race, body mass index, and healthcare worker status, and stratified models by older vs. younger age (cutoff = 41 years). African Americans had higher hair cortisol levels relative to participants of other races and ethnicities. In adjusted models, higher hair cortisol concentrations were associated with an increased odds of infection with SARS-CoV-2 (OR = 1.84; CI: 1.10-3.07) among older, but not younger, participants. The results suggest that psychosocial stress may be a risk factor for SARS-CoV-2 infection; stress management may be an important part of a comprehensive approach to protect against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

The surface of human hair is normally hydrophobic as it is covered by a lipid layer, mainly composed of 18-methyleicosanoic acid (18-MEA). When the hair is damaged, this layer can be partially or fully removed and more hydrophilic, mainly negatively charged surfaces are formed with a wide variety of physical and chemical characteristics. The cosmetic industry is currently embracing the opportunity of increasing the sustainability of their hair-care products whilst improving product performance. To do this, it is vital to have a deeper understanding of the hair surface and how it interacts with hair-care ingredients. This work contributes to this by harnessing the potential of neutron reflectometry (NR) with scattering contrast variation to describe hierarchical adsorption. Three types of hair-mimetic surfaces have been produced: two "healthy hair" models to probe the role of lipid structure, and one "damaged hair" model, to consider the effect of the surface charge. Adsorption of hair-care ingredients has then been studied. The results for these relatively short lipid models indicate that a methyl branch has little effect on adsorption. The "damaged hair" studies, however, reveal the unexpected apparent adsorption of an anionic surfactant to a negative surface. This preferential adsorption of the otherwise solubilised neutral components demonstrates a facile route to selectively deliver a protective film on a damaged hair fibre, without the need for a cationic species. On a more general note, this study also demonstrates the feasibility of using NR to characterize such complex systems.

Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common form of hair loss characterized by miniaturization of hair follicles. Low-level light therapy (LLLT) and microneedling have shown potential in promoting hair regrowth. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of an innovative light-emitting diode (LED) helmet cooperated with a novel light-guiding microneedle patch (LMNP) for stimulating hair growth in AGA. In this randomized clinical trial, 16 AGA patients received treatments using light-guiding microneedle patches (LMNPs) illuminated by a LED helmet equipped with green (522 nm) and red (633 nm) LEDs, delivering 50 mW/cm2 power and 40 J/cm2 energy. Treatments were applied weekly for 24 weeks, targeting the frontal recession area. The right side of the scalp was treated with green light and the left with red light, each combined with a LMNP featuring 900 µm height needles at a density of 105 per square centimeter. Hair density and diameter, along with patient and physician satisfaction scores, were assessed monthly. Both red and green LED treatments with LMNP, significantly enhanced hair density and diameter. Satisfaction scores, as reported by both physicians and participants, increased over time. Comparative analyses revealed no statistically significant differences in average satisfaction scores or in changes in hair density and diameter between the groups by the end of the study. Additionally, no serious adverse effects were reported, highlighting the safety of the treatments. The combined Light sources which is portable LED helmet and LMNPs shows promise as a non-invasive, effective treatment for AGA, with similar efficacy between red and green wavelengths.

BACKGROUND: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most prevalent cause of hair loss around the world. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of laser stimulation with a 675-nm wavelength for the treatment of AGA in male and female Indian patients. METHODS: A total of 20 Indian healthy patients aged 23-57 years who presented a grade of alopecia stage I to stage V underwent one single pass with a 675-nm laser to the scalp area twice a week for a total of 8 sessions, followed by once a week for 4 sessions and once in 2 weeks for 2 sessions. There are 14 laser treatments in total. Macro- and dermatoscopic images have been acquired at T0 (baseline) and T1 (4 months). The vertex, frontal, and parietal areas of the scalp were evaluated. Many parameters were analyzed including hair count and hair density of terminal; mean thickness; vellus follicles; total follicular units; units with 1 hair, 2 hairs, 3 hairs, 4 hairs, and >4 hairs; unit density; and average hair/unit. RESULTS: The macroimages and dermatoscopic evaluations showed good improvement over the entire treated area, with a clear increase in the number of hairs and hair thickness. General parameters such as hair count and hair density showed a percentage increase of around 17%. The hair mean thickness parameters showed a significant (P<.001) percentage increase of 13.91%. Similar results were obtained for terminal and vellus hair: terminal hair count and hair density significantly (P=.04 and P=.01, respectively) increased by 17.45%, vellus hair count increased by 16.67% (P=.06), and the density of vellus hair increased by 16.61% (P=.06). CONCLUSIONS: The study findings demonstrate that the 675-nm laser system improved AGA in Indian patients, facilitating the anagen phase and improving hair density and other positive hair parameters.

The North American (NA) porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is a rodent species with specialized hair structures called quills designed to detach and penetrate into tissues of any human or animal coming into contact with them. The objective of this study was to characterize the fungal flora of the quills in the region of the rosette in wild NA porcupines to further define health risks to NA porcupines and any animal coming into contact with the quills. A total of 17 adult NA porcupines were sampled, and fungal culture was performed. Fungal organisms were cultured from 15 (88.2%) of 17 samples. Thirty-three isolates of 10 different fungal genera were cultured. The most frequently isolated fungi were Lodderomyces elongisporus (n = 7, 41.2%), Candida spp. (n = 3, 17.6%), and Penicillium spp. (n = 2, 11.8%). Eleven (64.7%) individuals grew multiple fungal organisms. In humans and animals quilled by porcupines, fungal culture should be considered in cases of infection, and if isolates resembling Candida spp. are isolated, matrix-assisted laser desorption-ionization time of flight or molecular methods are necessary to rule out L. elongisporus.

BACKGROUND: Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a chronic lymphocytic skin disease manifested by progressive scarring alopecia. The diagnosis of LPP is made based on histopathological examination, although it is not always definite. The current study evaluates the effectiveness of non-invasive atomic force microscopy (AFM) hair examination in detecting morphological differences between healthy and diseased hair. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Here, three to five hairs from lesional skin of 10 LPP patients were collected and examined at nine locations using AFM. At least four images were taken at each of the nine sites. Metric measurements were taken and metric (length, width, and scale step height) and morphological features (striated and smooth surface of scales, the presence of endocuticle and cortex, shape of scales edges, scratches, pitting, cracks, globules, and wavy edge) were compared with hair from healthy controls. In addition, areas on diseased hair where the process of pathological, unnatural delamination of the hair fiber occurs are described. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference in the number of scratches in the initial sections of the LPP hair, in the intensity of wavy edges along the entire length of the tested hair, and in the number of scales with pitting in the middle section of the hair. In addition, a statistically significant higher number of scales with striated surface was found in LPP group starting at 3.5 cm from the root continuing towards the free end of the hair. Other morphological changes such as presence of cortex, globules, oval indentations, and rod-like macrofibrillar elements were also assessed, however, detailed results are not presented, as the differences shown in the number of these morphological changes were not significantly different. CONCLUSION: This publication outlines the differences between virgin, healthy Caucasian hair, and the hair of LPP patients. The results of this study can be used for further research and work related to LPP. This is the first attempt to characterize the hair of LPP patients using AFM.

This study aimed to assess the impact of a combination of probiotic strains of Lactiplantibacillus on the treatment of androgenic alopecia (AGA). To this end, 136 individuals with AGA (62 men and 74 women) aged 18-65 years were enrolled in a double-blind, parallel-group clinical trial. A total of 115 individuals (57 in the probiotic group and 58 in the placebo group) completed this study within a 16-week intervention period. Capillary density, thickness, and length of hair were analyzed before and after the intervention using FotoFinder Trichoscale Pro. In addition, the gut microbiota was assessed by paired-end sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform (2 × 300 bp). At the conclusion of the treatment period, a notable decline (p < 0.05) in the number of telogen hairs was evident in the probiotic group while hair thickness decreased in the placebo group (p < 0.05). However, the remaining variables did not exhibit any statistically significant changes. In the probiotic-treated group, individuals aged less than 37.5 years exhibited a reduction in the number and density of telogen hair (p = 0.0693 and p = 0.0669, respectively) and an increase in hair length (p = 0.0871). Furthermore, a notable decline in the number and density of vellus hair (p < 0.05) was observed, and this was accompanied by no change in the hair thickness. The probiotic-treated group exhibited a significantly higher abundance of Lactobacillus (p-adjusted < 0.05, DEseq2 test) and demonstrated a notable reduction in the number and density of telogen hair, and this was accompanied by an increase in the percentage of anagen hair. The probiotic mixture was well tolerated by the participants, with a treatment adherence rate of 90%. In light of this study's limitations, it can be concluded that a mixture of three strains of Lactiplantibacillus promotes the presence of terminal follicles, preventing their gradual miniaturization, which is a characteristic of AGA.

Foster parents have been shown to report higher levels of parenting stress but also more dyadic coping (DC) behaviors in their partnership than biological parents, which might be an important protective factor that helps them cope with daily stressors. Here, we examined how parenting stress and DC are related in foster and biological parents and whether these are reflected in long-term alterations of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activity. A total of 79 foster mothers and 131 biological mothers participated in a longitudinal study. At the initial assessment, children were aged 2-7 years and lived for an average of 18 months in their current foster family. Mothers' cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) concentrations and their cortisol/DHEA ratios were assessed in scalp hair twice with approximately 11 months in between, while their perceived parenting stress and DC were measured by self-report questionnaires. Results showed no significant differences between foster mothers and biological mothers in cortisol, DHEA and cortisol/DHEA concentrations. While more DC was longitudinally related to lower levels of parenting stress across both study groups, no significant associations were found to endocrine markers. Thus, these findings indicate that increased parenting stress levels were not, or not strongly, reflected in HPA axis alterations as assessed in hair. Our findings thus add evidence for non-significant associations between self-reported perceived stress and chronic HPA axis markers. Future studies may explore whether early interventions, including those aimed at promoting and maintaining positive DC, are beneficial in preventing the development of stress-related illnesses in foster parents.

Oil spills from pipeline accidents can have long-lasting health effects on residents of polluted regions. Assessing the potential health risk of these accidents is crucial for effective environmental health management. This study analyzed the concentration of 2-OHNAP in urine and hair as biomarkers of PAHs exposure among the people living in a region with frequent oil pipeline incident in Iran. Fifty pairs of hair and urine samples were collected from residents along with demographic information and dietary habits via a questionnaire. The concentration of 2-OHNAP was analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detector (HPLC-FLD). 2-OHNAP was detected in 100% of urine and 88% of hair samples. The mean concentration of 2-OHNAP in urine was 16.65 ± 21.98 µg/g creatinine and in hair was 8.16±7.62 ng/g dry weight (dw). However, there was no significant correlations between the levels of 2-OHNAP in urine and hair. The mean values of HQ and CR were below 1 and 10-6, respectively. Moreover, some simulated health risk indices were near the threshold levels, and the carcinogenic risk above 70% of the simulated CRs was above 10-6 as well. Therefore, the health risk attributed to the exposure to the parent compound of 2-OHNAP in the study area is currently acceptable, but it is not negligible and may be worsened in the future. This study provides a valuable scientific information for regional decision makers and stakeholders about human health programs and identification of environmental health priorities.
