This essay studies the physical shape, character and fate of Oedipus, applying relevant and current medical scientific criteria. The abuses he suffered during childhood play an important role in this context. The name Oedipus is usually translated as "swollen foot", but according to various etymological sources, the name can be interpreted in different ways. One of these interpretations alludes to fact that it was easy for the hero to solve the riddle of the sphinx because its key message addressed an orthopedic issue as it was dealing with the function of the feet. During Oedipus' life, he suffered many injuries and disorders, which can be classified using the current ICD code. There is, for example, his blindness after he had blinded himself. In addition, we can assume that Oedipus suffered from a post-traumatic stress disorder and a borderline personality disorder following the child abuse caused by his parents who intended to kill him. Thus, the discussion about his own responsibility for his actions is again being put into question. Oedipus`s life story is once again proof that Greek mythology can reflect the reality of life.

This paper addresses the issue of whose genitalia are involved in the dissolution of the castration complex in boys. Freud and his followers suggested several different possibilities which are elaborated herein, and these alternative models are discussed from the perspective of psychological research regarding children's emergent gender identity and their awareness of genital differences. The reviewed data show that contrary to Freudian theory, preschool children's emergent gender identity is not dependent on their awareness of genital differences. However, preschoolers with younger siblings, primarily opposite gender ones, evidence greater understanding of genital differences, as Freud suggested. The discussion emphasizes the importance of children's family constellation and their awareness of self-other similarity and dissimilarity in the development of their gender identity.

Our text makes as its central idea the Winnicott's approach, emphasizing the importance of a good crossing of the stage of concern - a stage that, in our view, is essential to constitute the pillars of a relatively healthy psyche, capable of coping with ailments arising from the oedipal conflict. Therefore, we will begin our work with a brief description of the stage of concern, followed by questions relating to the characteristic ambivalence of Oedipus himself. Finally, we make some considerations that aim to connect with an analysis of the Piggle case (The Piggle), a two and a half year old girl, whose treatment, carried out by D.W. Winnicott, occurred during sixteen meetings, constituting a kind of analysis according to demand, dealing with, above all, issues related to the intensity of ambivalent feelings not elaborated by the patient, which anticipated her entry into the Oedipus complex before she went, fundamentally, through the stage of concern.

Being one of Freud's most famous contributions to psychoanalysis, the Oedipus complex is still a topic of heated interest. It has been disputed in many different disciplines ranging from anthropology to biology. This theoretical paper aimed to explain the phenomena that are represented by children's affectionate and assertive attitudes towards their parents, named as the Oedipus complex by some, in terms of parent-offspring conflict, sibling competition, and infanticide. All of these evolutionary biological concepts or their combination could conceive specific relational settings similar to those emerging in the Oedipus complex. Psychoanalysis surely acknowledges the effects of parent-offspring conflict or sibling dynamics on familial relations and character formation. Nevertheless, they have been generally overshadowed by other primary theoretical concepts. Considering the findings from evolutionary biology and developmental psychology, it was asserted that parent-offspring conflict and sibling dynamics must be included in the conceptualization of oedipal-like behaviors. In light of these hypotheses, related literature and suggestions for further studies were discussed.

The guilt and shame of participating in an indecent consumerist way of life that causes climate change and mass extinction of species inflicts a moral wound on us. This moral wound arouses an indignation of which the "Greta generation" is one of the spokespeople, and it involves developing an ethic of relations between our species and non-human species. We must learn to "think like a mountain", in the words of Aldo Leopold, that is to say in an ecosystemic way, in order to accept our true place in the biotic community of microorganisms, flora and fauna: that of "children of the biosphere", a biosphere on which we are as dependent as an infant is its parents. The author argues that developing such an ethic requires a work of culture to think about new environmental paradigms, especially the fact that humanity endlessly artificializes nature, even its own nature, to the detriment of the wild part of them. Can the Œdipal situation, its taboos and its respect for fecundity be extended to our biotic family?

ABSTRACT The aim was to understand the exercise of parenting and subjectivation in contemporary families regarding to the Oedipus Complex experience, from Linkage Psychoanalysis Theory. A case study has been carried out by semi - structured interviews with two couples, represented by the grandparents who fulfil the main nurture functions with their granddaughters, and the couple formed by the biological mother and the girls' stepfather, who also takes part in the family everyday life of the children. It was found that the exercise of parenting is shared and held by the four interviewees, constituting a new family experience in which the parental roles are not limited in a clear way. Even so, however for all family members, the grandmother represents the main figure who performs parental functions in front of granddaughters, setting up unconscious alliances and intergenerational aspects which have configured the family dynamics. It was observed that for an oedipal construction it's necessary to be performed a distinctive role not limited to gender or biological paternity, which allows the record of the differences and the inter-subjective relations' division.

Abstract The aim of this research is understanding the contributions that Parental Contra Oedipus has in the adolescents psychotherapy. A literatura review is made about this concept to discuss subsequently its clinical dimensions in adolescence. An analysis of the concept could allow a problematization of the responsability idea related to the parenthood, with the aim of discussing a more analitic framework, which can include subjetives and historical elements of the parents as relevant dimension of the adolescences psychotherapy.

Much has been written about the woman in the context of the mother-infant relationship. However, the role of the woman in the Oedipus complex has not received much attention. The aim of the present paper is to review the theories regarding the double feminine role - sexual object and object of identification - in the Oedipal triangle, making the mother a protagonist (as much as the father). For that, the article situates the "feminine" in the contemporary family and synthetically reviews the articulation between the phallic mother, castration, power/potency, and misogyny, with a focus on Freud, Chodorow, Ogden, and Fiorini. The arguments are illustrated with the Oedipal scenario in the case of Dora and the postulations of Bleichmar and Balsam. Finally, a case is made for the importance of strengthening both identity poles (feminine and masculine) to enable better object relations in adult life.(AU)

O objetivo do presente artigo é revisar as teorias a respeito do duplo papel feminino - objeto sexual e objeto de identificação - no triângulo edipiano, tornando a mãe protagonista (tanto quanto o pai).

This revision concerns primarily the biological origin of the Oedipus complex, classically understood as an inherited primal phantasy. However, a reconceptualization of the origin of what Freud called the nuclear complex of the neuroses also has consequences for understanding its nature. A review of current knowledge relevant to the biological mechanisms of inheritance and the type of memory system that Freud had in mind, and a review of modern instinct theory, suggests that the Oedipus complex is not an innate predisposition but rather the almost inevitable outcome of a combination of simpler biological processes.

The authors discuss the psychoanalytic treatment of Little Hans, drawing on the perspective offered by Laplanche's concept of "enigmatic messages," which they believe can contribute to a better understanding of this case history. They conclude that Little Hans's positive Oedipus complex conceals his negative Oedipus complex in which he represents his parents' oedipal problems in a distorted fashion. They demonstrate the way his parents project aspects of these problems into Hans's psyche, where his subsequent identifications with them lead to substitutive formations. They trace the course of Little Hans's horse phobia and examine his search for substitutive formations that have to align with his parents' defenses if they are to succeed in securing his safety and their affection.

Abstract: This article approaches obsessional neurosis from the theoretical-clinical foundations of Freud and Lacan. The psychoanalytic clinic allows us to formulate pertinent questions to the developed study, thus allowing the articulation between theory and clinical practice. This study summons the reader to the debate about the impasses of the clinic and the direction of the treatment, and reveals that the clinic of obsessional neurosis can teach much about the foundations of psychoanalysis, about the Oedipus complex, about how the subject stands before the desire and their strategies of "jouissance".

Most analysts who write about the Oedipus complex, including Loewald and Ogden, do not seem to differentiate between the oedipal "killing" as opposed to murdering one's parent. Life, and especially growing up, entail more than one act of "killing," on both the child's and the parents' sides. If there is a benign resolution to the oedipal conflict, then this is a "soft" killing, which acts on behalf of life, or at least can be experienced as an inevitable part of it. Under less favorable circumstances, such as excessive deprivation, oedipal parricide amounts to a murderous act against one's parent, which will not result in psychic growth, but in melancholia and other psychic disturbances. This difference will be discussed in light of Loewald's and Ogden's reconceptualization of the Oedipus complex and Fairbairn's conception of the basic trauma of the infant/child, in relation to the mother's rejection of his or her love.

The two poets, an American Sylvia Plath and a Hungarian, Attila József were separated by a quarter of century of time, they lived and worked in different spaces, cultures, but both created in their poetry a radically new style of self-expression, called confessional poetry. The "Belated Lament" of Attila József was written in 1936, and in the following year its author - after repeated earlier attempts - committed suicide. The "Daddy" of Sylvia Plath was written in 1962. She, again, after several attempts, killed herself the following year. They both talk about the powerful effect of the disruptive effect of unresolved Oedipal memories, both are deeply concerned with mourning of the Oedipal other a father and a mother (who died several decades before), and they also construct the death of their own. They both present themselves as an unsuccessful Oedipus and articulate a disturbing and disruptive arrival to Kolonos.

Given the historical association of hysteria with women and their relation to the feminine, many papers seek to understand the difficulty of this subjective position for women's sexuality. The present article promotes the urgency to discuss the implications of its incidence on men, anatomically speaking. Thus, this work aims to discuss the effects of the dynamics of hysteria for men, in its concerns to the sexual position assumption. For this, as it is a theoretical research, we will start with a screening of Freud's and Lacan's first period of teaching texts, looking for references of masculine hysteria and, mainly, considerations on cases of hysterical men. Subsequently, we will articulate the aspects highlighted by the authors, with which, in psychoanalytic theory, is presented as particular to the masculine position, such as the relation with the signifier phallus, with castration and symbolic identification, as well as its effects in the dynamics of the desire and fantasy.(AU)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the formation of the married couple through a psychoanalytical approach, taking into consideration its intrapsychic and intersubjective aspects. The authors start by examining the love choice as the foundation of the identification process and its implications in the formation of the couple. Next, they investigate the concept of bond and the conjugal formation from the standpoints of Puget, Bernstein, Eiguer and Käes. Finally, the authors discuss the concept of unconscious ties through its typologies. The study observes that the formation of the couple offers, on one hand, a continent for the staging of agreements and unconscious pacts, and on the other, defensive mechanisms to deal with collective life. The study concludes that the couple tends towards stability when the circumstances recreate reference models - forming an unprecedented relationship structure - and when such models fit into the broader sociocultural context.

Historically, psychoanalysis has positioned the Oedipus complex as its focal point, based on a parental configuration of two-parent families consisting of a (male) father and a (female) mother. The modern era allows, albeit highly ambivalently, for the diversity of marital and parental configurations, reflecting cultural change as well as advances in the medical-technology of in vitro fertilization and of sperm and egg donations. The author discusses the analyses of two lesbian women who have chosen to mother a baby via an anonymous sperm donation. The author then takes up the question of whether unconscious oedipal conflicts influenced the decisions these patients made. She also questions whether the father in contemporary analytic thinking needs be a (male) "father" who is the "third," the "other." The work of Freud, Loewald, Searles, Poland, Ogden, and others will be brought to bear on these questions.

Abstract: Based on the lacanian quotation: "the schizophrenic speech… with no help from a established discourse", this article shows how the concept of discourse works as a clinical contribution to the diagnosis of schizophrenia, by analyzing fragments from clinical cases. The singular way in which the patient (does not) bound to the Other allows the analysis of Schizophrenia's negative symptoms, grounded on new aspects. According to psychoanalysis, those symptoms are approached taking the subject's relation with language into account. This article also presents semblant's function in discourse and how it is deconstructed by the Schizophrenic's irony.

This paper explores the apparent reluctance in the world to recognizing the sexuality of breastfeeding. It demonstrates the ways in which the experience of breastfeeding is desexualized and attempts an understanding of why this occurs. Breastfeeding is looked at from a psychobiological perspective and situates it within the complexity of female sexuality. Female sexuality is understood to have both maternal and erotic components. Maternal and erotic sexuality is examined from a hormonal, neurological, and anatomical perspective, in order to demonstrate the similarities. Resistances to experiencing breastfeeding as sexual are looked at from both an oedipal and preoedipal perspective. An attempt is made to understand the biochemical processes underlying the transformation of breastfeeding from its potentially erotic sexual position to a position of maternal sexuality. Maternal sexuality is looked at as a maturational achievement, perhaps an additional psychosexual stage following genital sexuality.

In Freud's day, his case studies, coupled with the findings of others (e.g., Breuer, Charcot), provided evidence that the Oedipus complex and his dynamic theory of repression (i.e., the unconscious interactions between id, ego, and superego) as causal agents in neurotic symptoms was suspect. With the aid of over 75 years of research since Freud's death, today's psychodynamic-orientated clinicians have discarded many of Freud's tenets related to the Oedipus complex. Modern psychoanalysts have focused their attention instead on a patient's personal relationships in their early life, their current life, and in their interactions with their therapist (transference).
