RESUMO

Cultural ecosystem services (CESs) are an important part of ecosystem services (ESs). Correctly understanding the supply and demand relationship of CES is the premise of ES sustainable management and helps to improve human well-being. However, the evaluation and mapping of CES supply and demand represents a significant gap in ES research. Using the Shigou Township of Mizhi County in China as an example, in this study, we evaluated CES supply and demand at the village scale. We first considered three aspects of supply potential, accessibility and quality to construct an indicator system of six types of CES supply, including aesthetic (Aest), sense of place (SP), social relations (SR), cultural heritage (Cult), education (Edu) and recreation (Recr) and obtained demand data through a questionnaire. Then, we identified the imbalance in the supply and demand of CES by Z-score standardization based on the quantification of the CES supply and demand. Secondly, bivariate spatial autocorrelation analysis was used to identify tradeoffs/synergies on the CES supply side, and chi-square tests were used to identify CES demand differences between stakeholder groups. The results indicated that the supply-demand patterns of CES presented evident spatial differences. The low-supply-high-demand patterns of Aest, SR and Recr accounted for the largest proportions, with values of 33.33%, 33.33% and 30.95%, respectively. The low-supply-low-demand patterns of SP and Cult accounted for the largest proportions, with values of 30.95% and 38.10%, respectively. The low-supply-low-demand pattern of Edu accounted for the smallest proportion (21.43%) and was mainly located in the south of Shigou Township. The southwest, northeast and central areas of Shigou Township were the key regions of tradeoffs/synergies of CES supply. There were significant differences in CES demand for SR, Cult and Edu among stakeholder groups. The results could contribute to optimizing regional ecosystem management and provide effective information for improving the imbalance between the supply and demand of CES.

RESUMO

Reef fishes are closely connected to many human populations, yet their contributions to society are mostly considered through their economic and ecological values. Cultural and intrinsic values of reef fishes to the public can be critical drivers of conservation investment and success, but remain challenging to quantify. Aesthetic value represents one of the most immediate and direct means by which human societies engage with biodiversity, and can be evaluated from species to ecosystems. Here, we provide the aesthetic value of 2,417 ray-finned reef fish species by combining intensive evaluation of photographs of fishes by humans with predicted values from machine learning. We identified important biases in species' aesthetic value relating to evolutionary history, ecological traits, and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) threat status. The most beautiful fishes are tightly packed into small parts of both the phylogenetic tree and the ecological trait space. In contrast, the less attractive fishes are the most ecologically and evolutionary distinct species and those recognized as threatened. Our study highlights likely important mismatches between potential public support for conservation and the species most in need of this support. It also provides a pathway for scaling-up our understanding of what are both an important nonmaterial facet of biodiversity and a key component of nature's contribution to people, which could help better anticipate consequences of species loss and assist in developing appropriate communication strategies.

RESUMO

Is art appreciation universal? Previous evidence suggests a general preference for representational art over abstract art, and a tendency to like art originating from one's own culture more than another culture (an ingroup bias), modulated by art expertise. However, claims about universality are difficult given that most research has focused on Western populations. Across two pre-registered and statistically powered experiments, we explore the role of culture and art expertise in the aesthetic evaluation of Indian and Western paintings and dance depicting both abstract and representational content, by inviting expert and art-naïve Indian and Western participants to rate stimuli on beauty and liking. Results suggest an ingroup bias (for dance) and a preference for representational art (for paintings) exists, both modulated by art expertise. As predicted, the ingroup bias was present only in art-naïve participants, and the preference for representational art was lower in art experts, but this modulation was present only in Western participants. The current findings have two main implications: (1) they inform and constrain understanding of universality of aesthetic appreciation, cautioning against generalising models of empirical aesthetics to non-western populations and across art forms, (2) they highlight the importance of art experience as a medium to counter prejudices.

RESUMO

In order to realize the interpretation of online artworks, the art design of artworks is studied on the basis of new media digital environment. Through the presentation of digital works, the enhancement of dramatic art appreciation, the balanced display of art appreciation, and the enhancement of digital aesthetic creation, the interpretation of artworks has been successfully completed, which strongly supports the digitization of new media. Art design is to constantly breed an updated online art space and attract and summon more viewers' new experience, new creation, and new perception so as to trigger and develop new propositions, new exploration, and new atmosphere of new media drama. For the current construction of traditional art design, new media digital technology plays a major role. The transformation of digital technology and Internet media is another "holographic" extension of the human body, which has an extremely strong impact on new media art and comprehensively updated our life, art, and aesthetic concepts. This is not only a revolution of media but also a change of art. At the same time, it is also accompanied by the "expansion" of art theory. What this change ultimately needs to complete is the revolution of media culture that affects the development process of human civilization.

RESUMO

Augmentation of the nasal dorsum is frequently required in the ethnic rhinoplasty patient to create a narrowing effect and to balance the upper two thirds of the nose with the desired increase in tip projection. The subdorsal cantilever graft (SDCG) provides a method to elevate the nasal dorsum to complement the increase in nasal tip projection. SDCG type A is situated below the bony dorsum and acts to raise the dorsum with limited elevation of the radix. The SDCG type B extends through a radix osteotomy site and raises the radix down to the supratip after complete release of the bony dorsum and middle nasal vault. Placement of the SDCG below the dorsum has many advantages, including preserving the features of the natural dorsum (dorsal aesthetic lines), controlled narrowing, and camouflage of the subdorsal graft. This is a complex procedure that requires a good understanding of dorsal preservation techniques. Use of the SDCG to raise the nasal dorsum in ethnic patients combines structure rhinoplasty with the principles of dorsal preservation for augmentation of the profile in patients with a low dorsum.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: In systematically healthy patients with an implant-supported fixed restoration (P), what is the influence of thin (E) as compared to thick (C) peri-implant soft tissues on aesthetic outcomes (O)? METHODS: Following an a priori protocol, a literature search of six databases was conducted up to August 2020 to identify prospective/retrospective clinical studies on healthy patients with an implant-supported fixed reconstruction. Measurement of the buccal soft tissue thickness and an aesthetic outcome was a prerequisite, and sites presenting with a buccal soft tissue thickness of <2 mm or shimmering of a periodontal probe were categorized as a thin phenotype. After study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment, random-effects meta-analysis of Mean Differences (MD) or Odds Ratios (OR) with their corresponding 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) were conducted, followed by sensitivity analyses and assessment of the quality of evidence. RESULTS: Thirty-four unique studies reporting on 1508 patients with 1606 sites were included (9 randomized controlled trials, one controlled trial, 10 prospective cohort studies, 8 cross-sectional studies, and 6 retrospective cohort studies). The mean difference of the pink aesthetic score (PES) after the follow-up was not significantly different between thin (<2.0 mm) or thick soft tissues (≥2.0 mm) or phenotypes (12 studies; MD = 0.15; [95% CI = -0.24, 0.53]; p = .46). PES changes during the follow-up, however, were significantly in favour of thick soft tissues (≥2.0 mm) or phenotypes (p = .05). An increased mean mucosal thickness was associated with an increased papilla index (5 studies; MD = 0.5; [95% CI = 0.1, 0.3]; p = .002) and an increase in papilla presence (5 studies; OR = 1.6; [95% CI = 1.0, 2.3]; p = .03). Thin soft tissues were associated with more recession, -0.62 mm (4 studies; [95% CI = -1.06, -0.18]; p = .006). Patient-reported outcome measures (patient satisfaction) were in favour of thick soft tissues -2.33 (6 studies; [95% CI = -4.70, 0.04]; p = .05). However, the quality of evidence was very low in all instances due to the inclusion of non-randomized studies, high risk of bias and residual confounding. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the present study (weak study designs and various soft tissue measurements or time-points), it can be concluded that increased soft tissue thickness at implant sites was associated with more favourable aesthetic outcomes.

RESUMO

The design system based on aesthetic principles is the most representative in the field of design and has a certain significance for the research and construction of design aesthetics and the development of design education. Therefore, this paper studies the application of pattern recognition system in the field of design based on aesthetic principles and designs a new type of aesthetic principle design system based on pattern recognition in computer vision. This paper proposes pattern similarity measurement and image preprocessing technology to improve the traditional aesthetic principle design system through pattern recognition and then further refine the research of the whole system through histogram equalization and gamma correction. Finally, the MNIST dataset experiment is used to verify the effect of multicolumn convolutional neural network pattern recognition on the aesthetic principle design system. The questionnaire survey experiment in this article and the traditional comparative experiment show that 76% of the public are very satisfied with this design system based on the aesthetic principles of pattern recognition in computer vision. Also, the improved aesthetic principle system scores as high as 90-95 points.

RESUMO

Facial aesthetics involve the application of non-invasive or minimally invasive techniques to improve facial appearance. Currently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are attracting much interest as nanocarriers in facial aesthetics due to their lipid bilayer membrane, nanosized dimensions, biological origin, intercellular communication ability, and capability to modulate the molecular activities of recipient cells that play important roles in skin rejuvenation. Therefore, EVs have been suggested to have therapeutic potential in improving skin conditions, and these highlighted the potential to develop EV-based cosmetic products. This review summarizes EVs' latest research, reporting applications in facial aesthetics, including scar removal, facial rejuvenation, anti-aging, and anti-pigmentation. This review also discussed the advanced delivery strategy of EVs, the therapeutic potential of plant EVs, and clinical studies using EVs to improve skin conditions. In summary, EV therapy reduces scarring, rejuvenates aging skin, and reduces pigmentation. These observations warrant the development of EV-based cosmetic products. However, more efforts are needed to establish a large-scale EV production platform that can consistently produce functional EVs and understand EVs' underlying mechanism of action to improve their efficacy.

RESUMO

The surgical approach to the brow has changed perhaps more than any other facial esthetic procedure in the past 20 years. Understanding the functional anatomy of the upper face is the best means of maximizing results and minimizing untoward events in this region. The surgical and clinical correlation is addressed in detail in this article. Cadaver and intraoperative photographs are used to illustrate critical points. Armed with the details of this anatomy, the reader will best be able to best individualize surgical treatment.

RESUMO

Brow lifting, when indicated, can significantly improve upper eyelid aesthetics. Brow lifting is a powerful maneuver to shape and lateralize the curvature of the brow arc and directly influences the upper eyelid fold height and the curvature of the upper eyelid crease. This article reviews the importance of upper periorbital aesthetic assessment because it lays the foundation to tailor the appropriate operative intervention. Highlighted are the authors' preferred approach to aesthetically shape the brow along with other complimentary upper eyelid aesthetic procedures including upper blepharoplasty, blepharoptosis repair, fat grafting, and upper periorbital fat shifting to optimize brow lifting outcomes.

RESUMO

Perceptual cues act as signals in the aesthetic value environment, which promote emotion regulation toward pro-environment behavior. This type of perception-emotion-behavior reactivity forms the core of human altruism. However, differences in pro-environmental behavior may result from variation across high-aesthetic-value (HAV) and low-aesthetic-value (LAV) environments. This study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying interaction effects between environmental context and emotion regulation on pro-environmental behavior by integrating behavioral and temporal dynamics of decision-making information processing with event-related potential (ERP) technique measures. The results indicated that changing anticipated emotions changes pro-environmental behavior. Regarding changing aesthetic value environments, while modulating emotion regulation, significant differences were found in brain regions and mean amplitudes of N1, P2, N2, and late positive potential (LPP) components, which anticipated emotion. The findings suggest that environmental aesthetic value and emotion regulation impact pro-environmental behavior.

RESUMO

Soundscape perception is a very weak link in the national park landscape evaluation system in China. A thorough understanding of soundscapes and their effects on visual aesthetics is important for the management of national park landscapes. In this study, features of soundscapes (e.g., loudness, frequency, preference, and auditory satisfaction) were investigated based on 394 valid questionnaires of residents in the Qianjiangyuan National Park Pilot Area. The effects of soundscape on visual aesthetics were analyzed using the PLS-SEM. The results demonstrated that: (1) Peddling voice and insect sound were the loudest components in the soundscape, running water and birdsong were the most commonly heard and most preferred, religious sound was the quietest and least frequently heard, and horn was the least preferred. Residents in the Pilot Area were generally satisfied with the auditory environment. (2) Both sound frequency and preference have significant effects on auditory satisfaction, but preference (path coefficient = 0.426) has a larger effect than does frequency (path coefficient = 0.228). (3) Loudness has negligible effects on visual aesthetics, but other soundscape characteristics did influence visual aesthetics. Soundscape preference had the most significant effect (path coefficient = 0.305), followed by auditory satisfaction (path coefficient = 0.174), and sound frequency (path coefficient = 0.165). Among them, effects of perception frequency are the indirect utilities.

RESUMO

Nonsurgical rhinoplasty procedures using soft tissue fillers have gained popularity. With the increasing frequency of such procedures, the incidence of intra-arterial injection of soft tissue filler material and subsequent ischemia has also risen. This article analyzes the topographic anatomy of the dorsal nasal artery in the nasal soft tissue to potentially enhance patient safety in nonsurgical rhinoplasty procedures. The dorsal nasal artery shows a variable topographic course, especially in relationship to the procerus muscle. By understanding the topographic courses of the dorsal nasal artery, aesthetic practitioners may be able to perform nonsurgical rhinoplasty procedures with increased safety and efficacy.

RESUMO

The morphologic characteristics of Asian nose are a short or retracted columella, an acute nasolabial angle, and deficient tip projection. Both operative rhinoplasty and filler rhinoplasty have been used to improve the columellar angle and the tip of the nose in Asia. However, the possibility that complications may occur following aesthetic interventions from the vascular compromises at the columella, for example, skin necrosis, deformity, and blindness. Thus, it is crucial to operate the aesthetic approach by understanding the detailed configurations of the columellar artery that might help physicians minimize the chances of adverse events.

RESUMO

The demand for surgical and nonsurgical esthetic procedures in the nasal region has increased sharply in the past. Anatomic differences of the nose between different ethnicities need to be investigated thoroughly. The objective of this article is to analyze and compare morphometric features of the nose in a mixed Asian-Caucasian study population. The nasal length in Asians was statistically significantly greater than in Caucasians, also after having adjusted for facial height. The nasal dorsal bridge and the nasal base showed statistically significant differences. By keeping these anatomic differences in mind while treating patients, greater efficacy and safety can be achieved.

RESUMO

Neuromodulator treatments limit the contractility of the frontalis muscle, resulting in reduced dynamic and static horizontal forehead line formation of the overlying skin. This interventional study investigated the electrophysiologic response (via signal-to-noise [SNR] ratio) and the overlying skin displacement of the frontalis muscle following neuromodulator injections in a total of 11 healthy neuromodulator-naïve volunteers. Relating SNR to the respective skin movement revealed that the higher the SNR, the more vertical the skin displacement is; this remained statistically relevant after gender stratification. These results are novel and will help the aesthetic community to understand neuromodulator effects on the frontalis muscle.
