Dementia can disrupt how people experience and describe events as well as their own role in them. Alzheimer's disease (AD) compromises the processing of entities expressed by nouns, while behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) entails a depersonalized perspective with increased third-person references. Yet, no study has examined whether these patterns can be captured in connected speech via natural language processing tools. To tackle such gaps, we asked 96 participants (32 AD patients, 32 bvFTD patients, 32 healthy controls) to narrate a typical day of their lives and calculated the proportion of nouns, verbs, and first- or third-person markers (via part-of-speech and morphological tagging). We also extracted objective properties (frequency, phonological neighborhood, length, semantic variability) from each content word. In our main study (with 21 AD patients, 21 bvFTD patients, and 21 healthy controls), we used inferential statistics and machine learning for group-level and subject-level discrimination. The above linguistic features were correlated with patients' scores in tests of general cognitive status and executive functions. We found that, compared with HCs, (i) AD (but not bvFTD) patients produced significantly fewer nouns, (ii) bvFTD (but not AD) patients used significantly more third-person markers, and (iii) both patient groups produced more frequent words. Machine learning analyses showed that these features identified individuals with AD and bvFTD (AUC = 0.71). A generalizability test, with a model trained on the entire main study sample and tested on hold-out samples (11 AD patients, 11 bvFTD patients, 11 healthy controls), showed even better performance, with AUCs of 0.76 and 0.83 for AD and bvFTD, respectively. No linguistic feature was significantly correlated with cognitive test scores in either patient group. These results suggest that specific cognitive traits of each disorder can be captured automatically in connected speech, favoring interpretability for enhanced syndrome characterization, diagnosis, and monitoring.

Global warming is changing precipitation patterns, particularly harming communities in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs). Whilst the long-term effects of being exposed to rainfall shocks early in life on school-achievement tests are well-established, there is little population-based evidence from LMICs on the mechanisms through which these shocks operate. Executive functions (EFs) are key for children's learning abilities. This paper analyses the effects of early exposure to rainfall shocks on four foundational cognitive skills (FCSs), including EFs that have been found to be key predictors of educational success. These skills were measured via a series of tablet-based tasks administered in Peru as part of the Young Lives longitudinal study (YLS). We combine the YLS data with gridded data on monthly precipitation to generate monthly, community-level rainfall shock estimates. The key identification strategy relies on temporary climatic shocks being uncorrelated with other latent determinants of FCSs development. Our results show significant negative effects of early life exposure to rainfall shocks on EFs-especially, on working memory-measured in later childhood. We also find evidence of rainfall shocks decreasing households' abilities to invest in human capital, which may affect both FCSs and domain-specific test scores. Finally, there is suggestive, but not conclusive, evidence that a conditional-cash-transfer program providing poor households with additional financial resources might partially offset the effects of the rainfall shocks.

OBJECTIVE: To assess processing speed, fine motor function, attention, and executive function (EF) impairments in adolescents with complex congenital heart disease (CHD) who underwent open-heart surgery during infancy. STUDY DESIGN: We administered a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery evaluating 5 EF domains: working memory, inhibition, cognitive flexibility, fluency, and planning and primary neurodevelopmental processes (PNPs): processing speed, fine motor function, and attention. The sample included 100 adolescents with complex CHD from a previous University Children's Hospital Zurich study, with 104 healthy controls for comparison. We generated scores for each EF domain and computed an EF summary score. Group comparisons and associations were analyzed with multiple regressions accounting for parental education. Mediation analysis explored how PNPs mediate the effect between a CHD diagnosis and EF. RESULTS: In adolescents with complex CHD, all EF domains and the EF summary score were impaired (ß = 0.20 to 0.37, all P < .05). Furthermore, they exhibited slower processing speed (ß = 0.27, P < .01) than healthy controls, with no differences in attention (ß = -0.07, P = .34) and fine motor function (ß = 0.08, P = .34). Processing speed showed a strong association with the EF summary score (ß = 0.60, P < .001) and partially mediated the relationship between CHD diagnosis and the EF summary score (ß = 0.37, 95% CI [0.24, 0.50], P < .001). CONCLUSION: Adolescents with complex CHD show difficulties in EFs and processing speed. Notably, processing speed is strongly associated with EFs and partly accounts for EFs disparities between patients and healthy controls. Early detection and interventions for processing speed difficulties may improve EF outcomes in these patients.

OBJECTIVE: To assess cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive functions in children and young adults with hemophilia treated according to contemporary standards of care. STUDY DESIGN: Evolving Treatment of Hemophilia's Impact on Neurodevelopment, Intelligence, and Other Cognitive Functions (eTHINK) is a US-based, prospective, cross-sectional, observational study (September 2018 through October 2019). Males (aged 1-21 years) with hemophilia A or B of any severity, with or without inhibitors, were eligible. Participants underwent neurologic examinations and age-appropriate neuropsychological assessments, including standardized tests/ratings scales of early development, cognition, emotional/behavioral adjustment, and adaptive skills. RESULTS: Five hundred and fifty-one males with hemophilia A (n = 433) or B (n = 101) were enrolled. Performance on cognitive tests was largely comparable with that of age-matched US population norms, although participants in certain age groups (4-5 and 10-21 years) performed worse on measures of attention and processing speed. Furthermore, adolescents and young adults and those with comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 64) reported more adaptive and executive function problems in daily life. Incidence of ADHD in adolescents (21%) was higher than expected in the general population. CONCLUSIONS: In general, males with hemophilia demonstrated age-appropriate intellectual, behavioral, and adaptive development. However, specific patient/age groups showed poorer attention performance and concerns for executive and adaptive development. This study established a normative data set for monitoring neurodevelopment in individuals with hemophilia and highlight the importance of screening and intervention for challenges with cognitive and adaptive skills in this population. BACKGROUND: We aimed to analyze the trajectories of cognitive decline as a function of the presence of type 2 diabetes and glycemic control in analyzes stratified by sex in an 8-year follow-up period. METHODS: A total of 1 752 men and 2 232 women aged ≥50 years who participated in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), conducted from 2004 to 2012, were analyzed. The outcomes of interest were performance on the cognitive domains of memory, executive function, and temporal orientation as well as the global cognition score. Cognitive performance was standardized in z-scores in strata based on schooling and age. The participants were classified as without diabetes, with controlled glycemia, and with uncontrolled glycemia, according to medical diagnosis, glucose-lowering medications use and HbA1c levels. Generalized linear mixed models controlled by sociodemographic, behavioral, and health-related characteristics were used for the trajectory analyses. RESULTS: No differences in z-scores were found for global cognition or cognitive domains based on diabetes classification in men and women at baseline. More than 8 years of follow up, women with uncontrolled glycemia had a greater decline in z-scores for global cognition (-0.037 SD/year [95% CI: -0.073; -0.001]) and executive function (-0.049 SD/year [95% CI: -0.092; -0.007]) compared with those without diabetes. No significant difference in trajectories of global cognition or any cognitive domain was found in men as a function of diabetes classification. CONCLUSIONS: Women with uncontrolled glycemia are at greater risk of a decline in global cognition and executive function than those without diabetes.

Working memory (WM) and inhibitory control (IC) play a crucial role in learning during early childhood. The literature suggests a non-linear developmental trajectory of executive functions (EFs) with varied results according to gender, usually attributed to environmental factors. However, there is insufficient and inconclusive data on whether this pattern is reproduced in the Latin American preschool population since most studies have been conducted in English-speaking, European, and Asian environments. Thus, objectively comparing children's executive performance across diverse international geographical contexts becomes challenging. This study aimed to conduct a cross-sectional analysis of the performance in WM and IC of 982 Ecuadorian preschoolers aged between 42 and 65 months (M = 53.71; SD = 5.714) and belonging to medium-high, medium, and low-medium socioeconomic strata. The participants consisted of 496 boys (M = 53.77; SD = 5.598) and 486 girls (M = 53.65; SD = 5.834), representing nine cities in Ecuador. To assess the effect of age and gender on performance in these two domains, the sample was divided into four 6-month age intervals. Two tests were administered to the participants, and a survey was conducted with 799 of their usual caregivers. Viewing the cross-sectional mean scores of the WM and IC tests as a temporal continuum reveals an upward trend in each age interval studied. Girls outperformed boys on the IC test, showing statistically significant differences in the earliest age interval. The gender differences in executive performance reported in the literature emphasize the need to explore the modulating effect of environmental variables on early childhood development. This information could offer valuable insights for adapting and optimizing cognitive and didactic strategies in early childhood tailored to the characteristics and needs of the preschool population.

OBJECTIVE: Provide a synthesis of the current literature about the effects of detraining on cognitive functions in older adults. METHODS: The PICOS acronym strategy was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and PsycINFO database. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses statement had been followed in the present study, in which the search was conducted on October 2023. The study selection consisted in original articles including older adults, detraining after training exercise period, use of tests or scales to measure cognitive function. The Downs and Black checklist had been used to assess the studies quality. Sample characteristics, type of previous training, detraining period, cognitive functions measurements and main results were extracted by 2 investigators. RESULTS: From 1927 studies, 12 studies were included, being 11 studies identified via systematic research, and 1 study by citation search. Older adults, ranged from 60 to 87 years old, were assessed after detraining. The cognitive functions most evaluated were global cognition and executive functions. One study evaluated both cognitive outcome and cerebral blood flow. Most of the studies demonstrated a decline in the cognitive function after detraining. CONCLUSION: Exercise detraining period, ranging from 10 days to 16 weeks, can effect negatively the cognitive function in older adults.

Central nervous system tumors produce adverse outcomes in daily life, although low-grade gliomas are rare in adults. In neurological clinics, the state of impairment of executive functions goes unnoticed in the examinations and interviews carried out. For this reason, the objective of this study was to describe the executive function of a 59-year-old adult neurocancer patient. This study is novel in integrating and demonstrating biological effects and outcomes in performance evaluated by a neuropsychological instrument and psychological interviews. For this purpose, pre- and post-evaluations were carried out of neurological and neuropsychological functioning through neuroimaging techniques (iRM, spectroscopy, electroencephalography), hospital medical history, psychological interviews, and the Wisconsin Card Classification Test (WCST). There was evidence of deterioration in executive performance, as evidenced by the increase in perseverative scores, failure to maintain one's attitude, and an inability to learn in relation to clinical samples. This information coincides with the evolution of neuroimaging over time. Our case shows that the presence of the tumor is associated with alterations in executive functions that are not very evident in clinical interviews or are explicit in neuropsychological evaluations. In this study, we quantified the degree of impairment of executive functions in a patient with low-grade glioma in a middle-income country where research is scarce.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment has a substantial impact on the daily function of people living with demyelinating diseases. However, the study of cognitive failures and their association with clinical variables in people suffering from neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) has been scarce, especially in the latin american (Mexican) population at early and middle stages of the disease. METHOD: We applied the Rao's Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological tests and obtained data of lesion burden through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), expression of AQPQ4-IgG antibodies, and degree of disability in 30 patients with NMOSD and 30 healthy participants as a control group. RESULTS: About half of the NMOSD patients (47%) showed some degree of cognitive impairment, especially in the executive domain compared to the control group. Executive function scores were positively associated with the degree of physical disability. We found no associations between cognitive dysfunction and disease duration, AQPQ4-IgG antibodies, lesion burden, nor depression. CONCLUSIONS: Executive functioning impairment is present in NMOSD and may predict the degree of functional disability in patients. Cognitive failures were not associated with immunological or radiological data, which emphasizes the relevance of applying systematic neuropsychological assessments in this clinical population.

INTRODUCTION: Dual-tasking is a non-pharmacological intervention in people with neurodegenerative conditions, and is used in Parkinson's disease (PD), primarily to enhance motor performance. The aim of this review is to compile the current evidence on how dual-task training affects cognitive processes in people with PD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review was undertaken, applying PRISMA guidelines, which included articles obtained from the PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct and Springer Link databases. Methodological quality was assessed using PEDro and ROBINS-I. RESULTS: Twelve articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria: nine of them were randomized controlled trials, and the remaining three were non-randomized studies. Improvements in attention and executive functions were identified, although the diversity of approaches and duration means that reaching definitive conclusions is difficult. CONCLUSIONS: Increased research and standardized intervention programmes are essential. Longitudinal and randomized controlled studies in representative samples which provide conclusions that are applicable to other contexts are also important.
TITLE: Efectos sobre los procesos cognitivos del entrenamiento basado en doble tarea en personas con enfermedad de Parkinson: una revisión sistemática.Introducción. La doble tarea es una intervención no farmacológica en personas con condiciones neurodegenerativas, utilizada en la enfermedad de Parkinson (EP), principalmente para favorecer el desempeño motor. El objetivo de esta revisión es reunir la evidencia actual sobre cómo el entrenamiento de doble tarea afecta a los procesos cognitivos en personas que presenten EP. Material y métodos. Se desarrolló una revisión sistemática, aplicando las directrices de PRISMA, incluyendo artículos obtenidos en las bases de datos de PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct y Springer Link. La calidad metodológica se evaluó mediante PEDro y ROBINS-I. Resultados. Doce artículos cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión y exclusión: nueve de ellos corresponden a ensayos controlados aleatorizados y los tres restantes fueron estudios no aleatorizados. Se identificaron mejoras en la atención y las funciones ejecutivas, aunque la diversidad en enfoques y duración dificulta llegar a conclusiones definitivas. Conclusiones. Es crucial expandir la investigación, estandarizando los programas de intervención. Del mismo modo, es importante llevar a cabo estudios longitudinales y controlados aleatorizados en muestras representativas que permitan llegar a conclusiones aplicables a otros contextos.

INTRODUCTION: Neighborhood socioeconomic status (NSES) has been linked with overall health, and this study will evaluate whether NSES is cross-sectionally associated with cognition in non-Hispanic whites (NHWs) and Mexican Americans (MAs) from the Health and Aging Brain: Health Disparities Study (HABS-HD). METHODS: The HABS-HD is a longitudinal study conducted at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. The final sample analyzed (n = 1,312) were 50 years or older, with unimpaired cognition, and underwent an interview, neuropsychological examination, imaging, and blood draw. NSES was measured using the national area deprivation index (ADI) percentile ranking, which considered socioeconomic variables. Executive function and processing speed were assessed by the trail making tests (A and B) and the digit-symbol substitution test, respectively. Linear regression was used to assess the association of ADI and cognitive measures. RESULTS: MAs were younger, more likely to be female, less educated, had higher ADI scores, performed worse on trails B (all p < 0.05), and had lower prevalence of APOE4 + when compared to NHWs (p < 0.0001). A higher percentage of MAs lived in the most deprived neighborhoods than NHWs. For NHWs, ADI did not predict trails B or DSS scores, after adjusting for demographic variables and APOE4. For MAs, ADI predicted trails A, trails B, and DSS after adjusting for demographic covariates and APOE4 status. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed that living in an area of higher deprivation was associated with lower cognitive function in MAs but not in NHWs, which is important to consider in future interventions to slow cognitive decline.

OBJECTIVE: Most prior research on physical activity (PA) and cognition is based on predominantly white cohorts and focused on associations of PA with mean (average) cognition versus the distribution of cognition. Quantile regression offers a novel way to quantify how PA affects cognition across the entire distribution. METHODS: The Kaiser Healthy Aging and Diverse Life Experiences study includes 30% white, 19% black, 25% Asian, and 26% Latinx adults age 65+ living in Northern California (n = 1600). The frequency of light or heavy PA was summarized as 2 continuous variables. Outcomes were z-scored executive function, semantic memory, and verbal episodic memory. We tested associations of PA with mean cognition using linear regression and used quantile regression to estimate the association of PA with the 10th-90th percentiles of cognitive scores. RESULTS: Higher levels of PA were associated with higher mean semantic memory (b = 0.10; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.14) and executive function (b = 0.05; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.09). Associations of PA across all 3 cognitive domains were stronger at low quantiles of cognition. CONCLUSION: PA is associated with cognition in this racially/ethnically diverse sample and may have larger benefits for individuals with low cognitive scores, who are most vulnerable to dementia.

INTRODUCTION: Executive functions and Metacognition are integrated for the management of intellectual resources in close relation to intelligence its functioning and results; they are specially interesting for understanding the expression and development of high intellectual abilility (HIA). The aim of the study is to find out the relationship between executive functions (and components) and metacognition (and components) in schoolchildren with HIA. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Measures of executive and metacognitive functioning and perfectionism were extracted from a sample of n= 147 schoolchildren with HIA. RESULTS: statistical analyses using Path analysis, offered an adjusted model in which the different executive components are related to the metacognitive components. DISCUSSION: We conclude and discuss the integrative model between executive function and metacognition and its mediating role as an endophenotype between genetic endowment and the expression of resource performance, suggesting the transfer of results to the education of high intellectual ability for the optimal and ethical expression of high potential.
Introducción: Las funciones ejecutivas y la metacognición se integran para la gestión de recursos intelectuales, en estrecha relación con la inteligencia, su funcionamiento y resultados, especialmente interesante para comprender la expresión y desarrollo, más o menos óptimos, de la alta capacidad intelectual (ACI). El Objetivo del trabajo es conocer la relación entre las funciones ejecutivas (y componentes) y la metacognición (y componentes) en escolares con ACI. Materiales y Métodos: Las medidas de funcionamiento y ejecutivo, metacognitivo y de perfeccionismo extraídas en una muestra de n= 147 escolares con ACI son analizadas estadísticamente mediante el Path análisis. Resultados: Se obtiene un modelo ajustado en el que se relacionan los distintos componentes ejecutivos con los metacognitivos. Discusión: Se concluye y discute el modelo integrador entre función ejecutiva y metacognición y su papel mediador, como endofenotipo entre la dotación genética y la expresión de rendimiento de los recursos, sugiriendo la transferencia de resultados a la educación de la alta capacidad intelectual para la óptima y ética expresión del alto potencial.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted two empirical studies (in a cross-sectional and a longitudinal design) with the aim at establishing normative data (including norms for strategy use [i.e., clustering and switching strategies] and performance over time), and examining the convergent validity, the test-retest reliability (3-4 wks interval) and the changes in performance with practice (1 year interval) of the different verbal fluency (VF) quantitative and qualitative scores in Spanish-speaking children and adolescents. METHOD: In S1 (n = 620 6- to 15-year-old Spanish-speaking children and adolescents), MANCOVA and Pearson's correlations were employed. In S2 (n = 148 6- to 12-year-old Spanish-speaking children), intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), paired t-tests, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were used. RESULTS: S1 results showed an age effect on all VF measures (quantitative and qualitative). The number of switches/clusters was more related to total word productivity and to executive functions (EF) than the mean cluster size. In S2, a significant increase in phonological VF performance was observed on number of switches and word productivity scores from baseline (Time 1) to repeat testing at Time 2. Practice effects were observed at Time 3 on all measures except for semantic and phonological mean cluster size. Test-retest reliability coefficients at Time 2 for number of clusters and switches, but not for mean cluster size, fell in the moderate range, ranging from ICCs .61 to ICCs .81. Test-retest reliability coefficients for total word productivity were higher (ICCs above .80) and stronger when testing as a unity with CFA methods (Ï=.94, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: These data may be relevant for informing the neuropsychological assessment of spontaneous cognitive flexibility in children with typical development (TD) and those with developmental or acquired disorders.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationships between (1) environmental and demographic factors and executive function (EF) in preschool children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and controls and (2) clinical and surgical risk factors and EF in preschool children with CHD. STUDY DESIGN: At 4-6 years of age, parents of children with CHD (n = 51) and controls (n = 124) completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Preschool Version questionnaire and the Cognitively Stimulating Parenting Scale (CSPS). Multivariable general linear modeling assessed the relationship between Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Preschool Version composite scores (Inhibitory Self-Control Index [ISCI], Flexibility Index [FI], and Emergent Metacognition Index [EMI]) and group (CHD/control), sex, age at assessment, gestational age, Index of Multiple Deprivation, and CSPS scores. The relationships between CHD type, surgical factors, and brain magnetic resonance imaging injury rating and ISCI, FI, and EMI scores were assessed. RESULTS: The presence of CHD, age at assessment, sex, and Index of Multiple Deprivation were not associated with EF scores. Lower gestational age was associated with greater ISCI and FI scores, and age at assessment was associated with lower FI scores. Group significantly moderated the relationship between CSPS and EF, such that CSPS significantly predicted EF in children with CHD (ISCI: P = .0004; FI: P = .0015; EMI: P = .0004) but not controls (ISCI: P = .2727; FI: P = .6185; EMI: P = .3332). There were no significant relationships between EF scores and surgical factors, CHD type, or brain magnetic resonance imaging injury rating. CONCLUSIONS: Supporting parents to provide a cognitively stimulating home environment may improve EF in children with CHD. The home and parenting environment should be considered when designing intervention studies aimed at improving EF in this patient group.

INTRODUCTION: Executive functions are commonly impaired in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Physical exercise has the potential for improving executive functions and can be easily implemented as a therapeutic method. However, there are only few systematic reviews of exercise effects in schizophrenia including cognitive outcomes, and no meta-analytical syntheses of effects on "cool" and "hot" executive functions. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis will be to determine the effects of physical exercise on "cool" and "hot" executive functions of adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol was guided by PRISMA-P guidelines. Studies will be searched using combinations of keywords and medical terms in the Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCO databases. Inclusion criteria will be determined as per PICOS approach. The risk of bias will be assessed using the Cochrane RoB2 tool. The certainty of evidence (per outcome) will be assessed using the GRADE method. The meta-analyses will be performed using the DerSimonian and Laird random effects model. Effect sizes (Hedges' g) with 95% confidence intervals will be calculated for each main outcome. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this review may be useful for mental health professionals to design treatment plans for adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, offering potential benefits related to the quality of life and cognitive abilities of this population. INTRODUCTION: This systematic review aimed to analyze the available body of published peer-reviewed studies on the effects of combat sports compared with active/passive control on cognitive function and electrophysiological markers of brain activity in older people. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The studies were searched in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO databases from deadline to June 2023. The PRISMA, TESTEX, RoB, and GRADE scales assessed the evidence's methodological quality and certainty of evidence. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (code: CRD42022361695). EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: After reviewing 3768 studies, seven combat sports interventions (score ≥60% in methodological quality) were selected, composed of 381 older people (63% female), with a mean age of 66 years. In the selected studies, interventions based on judo, karate, and taekwondo were carried out, where it was not possible to verify the benefits of combat sports in cognitive function and electrophysiological markers of brain activity regarding active/passive control groups, although the individual results of the analyzed studies indicate that the practice of combat sports favor selective attention, divided attention, executive function, visual perception, and cognitive processing speed in older people. CONCLUSIONS: The available evidence does not allow a definite recommendation regarding combat sports as an effective cognitive function intervention in older people.

INTRODUCTION: Migraine is a disease that affects the overall performance of the patient, especially attention and executive functions (EF), with a direct impact on the person's functionality, highlighting the importance of studies in order to minimize its damage. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate if there is a link between migraine and executive and attentional functions. METHODOLOGY: Observational study (44 subjects; 29 migraineurs and 15 non-migraineurs) on attentional and executive functioning changes in migraine. Subjects over 18 years of age were included in the study, regardless of gender, recruited for convenience at CAM FAME, FAME and Centro AMA, primary recruitment centers, following the criteria of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3). The participants underwent neuropsychological tests that estimated executive and attentional functioning. For attention, the Psychological Attention the Assessment Battery (AAB) was used, and for EF, the Five-Digit Test (FDT) was used. Student's t test, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney and/or Kruskal-Wallis U test were used, whose analyzes fixed the type I error at 0.05. RESULTS: All AAB subtests pointed to a reduction in the attentional potential in migraineurs when compared to the control group. The FDT showed lowering in the migraineurs group subjects, when compared with the non- migraineurs group. Multivariate analysis identified a relationship between EF, Attention and migraine (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: migraineurs present a decrease in executive functioning and attentional skills and an increase in execution time when compared to non-migraineurs individuals
INTRODUÇÃO: A enxaqueca é uma doença que afeta o desempenho global do paciente, principalmente a atenção e as funções executivas (FE), com impacto direto na funcionalidade da pessoa, destacando a importância de estudos a fim de minimizar seus danos. OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar se existe ligação entre enxaqueca e funções executivas e atencionais. METODOLOGIA: Estudo observacional (44 indivíduos; 29 com enxaqueca e 15 sem enxaqueca) sobre alterações de atenção e funcionamento executivo na enxaqueca. Foram incluídos no estudo indivíduos maiores de 18 anos, independente do sexo, recrutados por conveniência no CAM FAME, FAME e Centro AMA, centros primários de recrutamento, seguindo os critérios da Classificação Internacional de Cefaleias (ICHD-3). Os participantes foram submetidos a testes neuropsicológicos que estimaram o funcionamento executivo e atencional. Para atenção foi utilizada a Bateria de Avaliação da Atenção Psicológica (AAB) e para FE foi utilizado o Teste de Cinco Dígitos (FDT). Foram utilizados teste t de Student, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney e/ou teste U de Kruskal-Wallis, cujas análises fixaram o erro tipo I em 0,05. RESULTADOS: Todos os subtestes da AAB apontaram redução do potencial atencional em enxaquecosos quando comparados ao grupo controle. O FDT apresentou redução nos indivíduos do grupo com enxaqueca, quando comparado com o grupo sem enxaqueca. A análise multivariada identificou relação entre FE, Atenção e enxaqueca (p<0,05). CONCLUSÃO: enxaquecosos apresentam diminuição do funcionamento executivo e das habilidades de atenção e aumento no tempo de execução quando comparados a indivíduos não enxaquecosos

Considering the association between Executive Functions (EF) and performance in mathematic, we aimed to analyse the low executive functions which impact the individual's personal, social, and educational functioning , and their associations with this performance and sociodemographic aspects not already explored in students aged 8 to 12 years. One hundred and ten participants were evaluated using the MMSE, Coruja PROMAT, NEUPSILIN-INF, FDT and a Sociodemographic Questionnaire. Correlation and regression analysis indicated that low executive accomplishment influences performance in mathematics, especially considering working memory and cognitive flexibility. The variables gender, family income and parents' age were not related to the presentation of low EF. In contrast, the sociodemographic aspects of school shift and parents' education were shown to be related to executive performance, especially among public school students, revealing the importance of attention to these factors
Considerando a associação entre Funções Executivas (FE) e desempenho em matemática, objetivou-se analisar a baixa performance executiva que impacta o funcionamento pessoal, social e educacional do indivíduo , e suas associações com esse desempenho e aspectos sociodemográficos ainda não explorados em escolares de 8 a 12 anos. Foram avaliados 110 participantes de ambos os sexos a partir dos instrumentos MEEM, Coruja-PROMAT, NEUPSILIN, FDT e Questionário Sociodemográfico. As análises de correlação e regressão empreendidas indicaram que o baixo desempenho executivo exerce influência sobre o desempenho em matemática, especialmente considerando a memória de trabalho e a flexibilidade cognitiva. As variáveis sexo, renda familiar e idade dos pais não apresentaram relação com baixa FE. Em contraponto, os aspectos sociodemográficos turno escolar e escolaridade dos pais se demonstraram fortemente relacionados à baixa performance executiva, especialmente nos estudantes de escola pública, revelando a importância da atenção a esses fatores

Ciento y diez participantes de ambos sexos fueron evaluados utilizando lo MEEM, Coruja-PROMAT, NEUPSILIN, FDT y Cuestionario Sociodemográfico. Los análisis de correlación y regresión indicaron que el bajo rendimiento ejecutivo influye en el rendimiento en matemáticas, especialmente considerando la memoria de trabajo y la flexibilidad cognitiva. Las variables sexo, renta familiar y edad de los progenitores no se relacionaron con baja FE. Por el contrario, los aspectos sociodemográficos turno escolar y educación de los progenitores estaban fuertemente relacionados con el bajo desempeño ejecutivo, especialmente en los estudiantes de escuelas públicas, revelando la importancia atención a estos factores

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the relationship between anxiety phenotypes (global anxiety, worry, and rumination) and white matter hyperintensities (WMH), with special consideration for the roles of age and executive function (EF). Our hypotheses were 1) anxiety phenotypes would be associated with WMH and 2) EF would moderate this relationship. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Participants were recruited from the local community (Pittsburgh, PA). PARTICIPANTS: We recruited 110 older adults (age ≥ 50) with varying worry severity and clinical comorbidity. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MEASUREMENTS: Demographics (age, sex, race, education), clinical measures (cumulative illness burden, global anxiety, worry, and rumination), EF, and WMH quantified with magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: Lower global anxiety and worry severity were significantly correlated with higher WMH volume, though the global anxiety relationship was not significant after controlling for age. Rumination as not associated with WMH burden. EF was not correlated with either global anxiety, worry, rumination, or WMH. However, in those with advanced age and/or greater WMH burden, there was an association between worry and EF as well as EF and WMH. CONCLUSION: Longitudinal studies are needed in order to clarify the complex interactions between anxiety phenotypes, WMH, and EF.
