RESUMO

One reason for the persistence of racial discrimination may be anticipated dissimilarity with racial outgroup members that prevent meaningful interactions. In the present research, we investigated whether perceived similarity would impact the processing of same-race and other-race faces. Specifically, in two experiments, we varied the extent to which White participants were ostensibly similar to targets via bogus feedback on a personality test. With an eye tracker, we measured the effect of this manipulation on attention to the eyes, a critical region for person perception and face memory. In Experiment 1, we monitored the impact of perceived interpersonal similarity on White participants' attention to the eyes of same-race White targets. In Experiment 2, we replicated this procedure, but White participants were presented with either same-race White targets or other-race Black targets in a between-subjects design. The pattern of results in both experiments indicated a positive linear effect of similarity-greater perceived similarity between participants and targets predicted more attention to the eyes of White and Black faces. The implications of these findings related to top-down effects of perceived similarity for our understanding of basic processes in face perception, as well as intergroup relations, are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Do gender, age, body mass and height influence eye biometrical properties in young adults? METHODS: A total of 155 eyes (92 female, 63 male) of healthy subjects between the ages of 18 and 39 years were included in the study. The subjects' gender and age were recorded, and their body mass, height and biometrical properties of the eyes were measured. RESULTS: The male subjects had significantly thicker and flatter corneas and lower minimal rim-to-disk ratios than the female subjects did. In both genders, age showed strong, negative correlations with anterior chamber depth and pupil diameter and a positive correlation with lens thickness. We also found significant, negative correlations between body height and mass with keratometry measurements, negative correlations between body height and optic disk rim area and rim volume, and positive correlations between body mass and axial length in both genders. CONCLUSIONS: Biometric eye parameters differ among people. In addition to age and gender, which are usually taken into consideration when interpreting ocular biometry findings, we strongly suggest that body height and mass should be also routinely considered when interpreting eye biometry data, as these factors have an impact on ocular biometry.

We present the case of an 81-year-old woman who developed a bilateral spontaneous suprachoroidal hemorrhage while under treatment with sodium enoxaparin. Temporal suspension of anticoagulant therapy led to an improvement of the choroidal hemorrhage. After three months follow-up, there was a complete reabsorption of the choroidal detachments, but there was a persistent vitreous hemorrhage in the right eye, which had been more severely affected. Pars plana vitrectomy with air tamponade was successfully performed in the right eye. Vision improved to 20/50 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye. Suprachoroidal hemorrhage is a rare condition with a poor visual prognosis. Reports on the development of suprachoroidal hemorrhage in patients with no predisposing ocular conditions are scarce, and in none were both eyes affected. The case reported herein is, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of bilateral, simultaneous suprachoroidal hemorrhage without predisposing ocular factors due to treatment with anticoagulants, with a favourable visual outcome.

With the vigorous development of the market economy and the continuous improvement of people's living standards, the pursuit of beauty has grown correspondingly. Among the plastic surgeries, ocular plastic surgery is the most popular one, accounting for the largest number of plastic surgeries in the world, especially in China. However, due to issues concerning policies, regulations, market supervision and professional talents, medical cosmetology incidents occur frequently, including disfigurement after cosmetology, which causes great harm to beauty seekers and seriously affects their work and life. This article sorts out the main existing problems in the ocular plastic surgery market, and calls for more attention and standardization at the levels of society, policies, and regulations. Objective: To discuss the ultrasonic manifestations of blind microphthalmia, and to explore the correlation between axis length and complicity of intraocular structure of blind microphthalmia. Methods: Retrospective case series study. The data of ultrasonic imaging and axis length of 162 patients (162 eyes) with blind microphthalmia diagnosed in Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital from July 2013 to July 2018 were collected. According to the degree of internal structure disorder, all affected eyes were divided into groups of the normal, the abnormal and the indistinguishable. The binocular axial length in these patients were compared. The relationship between the axial length and the age of the patients, and the structural changes of the blind microphthalmia with a basic structure were analyzed. Statistical methods were mainly performed by paired t-test, one-way linear regression analysis and one-way analysis of variance. Results: The disease was unilateral in all the 162 patients. The age ranged from 1 month to 58 years old. And 139 cases (85.80%) were under 12 years old. There were 90 males and 72 females. The mean axial length of the affected eyes (162 eyes) was (13.17±3.77) mm, while the mean axial length of the control eyes (162 eyes) was (21.85±2.01) mm. There was significantly statistical difference in the ocular size between them (t=-27.369; P<0.01). There was no significant correlation between the axial length of the affected eye and age in patients with unilateral blind microphthalmia (r=0.027; P>0.05), while there was a significant correlation between the axial length of the control eye and age (r=0.590; P<0.01). The axial length of the groups of the normal (14 eyes), the abnormal (91 eyes) and the indistinguishable (57 eyes) was (17.80±2.19) mm, (14.81±2.92) mm and (10.05±2.46) mm, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (F=72.800; P<0.01), and there was also significant difference between the two groups (all P<0.01). Ocular ultrasonic imaging showed that 105 eyes (64.81%) had a basic ocular structure, 83 eyes (51.23%) had retinal detachment, 15 eyes (9.26%) had bulbar ossification, and 10 eyes (6.17%) had optic disc abnormality. Conclusions: Blind microphthalmia mostly has a basic ocular structure and is often associated with retinal detachment. The axial length of the affected eye is correlated with the degree of intraocular structural disorder. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2021, 57: 825-829).

The article reviews literature on ocular manifestations of primary thrombotic microangiopathy. Thrombotic microangiopathy is a clinical and morphological syndrome that characterizes a systemic disseminated lesion of the microcirculatory bed, it is a special type of vascular damage that combines thrombosis and inflammation of the vascular wall leading to occlusion of the vessel lumen, causing ischemic damage to various organs and tissues. The classic types of primary thrombotic microangiopathy are thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, shigatoxin-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome (STEC-HUS) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome are characterized by ischemic damage to the visual organ as a result of suspected thrombotic microangiopathy in the microcirculatory bed of the eye. The clinical picture of ocular manifestations of these diseases is similar, however the damage to the eye in the form of ischemic Purtscher-like retinopathy is more characteristic of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, which may be due to chronic uncontrolled activation of the alternative complement pathway in this disorder. Timely initiation of systemic therapy of the underlying disease in most cases leads to complete restoration of visual functions. A thorough ophthalmological examination of patients with these diseases is required.

The aim of the study was to determine the utility of maximum eye temperature measured by infrared thermography (IRT) as a stress indicator compared with plasma cortisol concentration in Thoroughbred and Arabian racehorses. The study included thirty racehorses undergoing standard training for racing. Measurements of maximum eye temperature and blood collection for plasma cortisol concentration were carried out before training (BT), and within 5 (5AT) and 120 minutes (120AT) after the end of the each training session in three repetitions, with a monthly interval. Both parameters were elevated at 5AT compared to BT (p⟨0.001). Compared to BT, at 120AT the maximum eye temperature remained elevated (p⟨0.001) and plasma cortisol concentration decreased (p⟨0.001). The study indicated significant weak correlations (r=0.220; p⟨0.001) between both measurements at all time points. The results support the use of IRT technique to monitor the response of horses to stress, potentially improving animal management and welfare.

In recent decades, eye plaques of brachytherapy have been extensively used as primary treatment as well as a complementary treatment for ocular cancer. The purpose of this study is the development of the eye plaque brachytherapy throughout a new design of eye plaque by combining the COMS plaque and the CCB BEBIG plaque loaded by IRA1-103Pd and 106Ru, respectively. A new dual-core plaque with a diameter of 20 mm was designed in the way that the BEBIG plaque with a diameter of 20 mm loaded by 106Ru plate is attached to the COMS plaque with a diameter of 20 mm loaded by 24 of IRA1-103Pd seeds. Dose calculations for the new plaque were performed by using the MCNP5 code. Dose calculations of dual-core plaque including 103Pd seeds (gamma) and 106Ru plate (beta) were separately done for the sake of MCNP constraints in gamma and beta particle transfer simultaneously. The new dual-core plaque delivers a much higher dose rate to the tumor compared with every single plaque, while the dose rate reached to healthy tissues is slightly higher than each plaque separately. Of course, this is acceptable because the treatment time reduces and subsequently the error in radiation therapy reduces.

PURPOSE: The present study compared the expression of early growth responsive gene-1 (Egr-1) in visual cortex between amblyopia kittens and normal kittens, and to explore the role of Egr-1 in the pathogenesis of amblyopia. METHODS: A total of 20 healthy kittens were randomly divided into deprivation group and control group with 10 kittens in each group. Raised in natural light, and covered the right eye of the deprived kittens with a black opaque covering cloth. Pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEP) were measured before and at the 1st, 3rd and 5th week after covering in all kittens. After the last PVEP test, all kittens were killed. The expression of Egr-1 in the visual cortex of the two groups was compared by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. RESULTS: PVEP detection showed that at the age of 6 and 8 weeks, the P100 wave latency in the right eye of deprivation group was higher than that in the left eye of deprivation group (P < 0.05) and the right eye of control group (P < 0.05), while the amplitude decreased (P < 0.05). The number of positive cells (P < 0.05) and mean optical density (P < 0.05) of Egr-1 protein expression in visual cortex of 8-week-old deprivation group were lower than those of normal group, as well as the number (P < 0.05) and mean optical density of Egr-1 mRNA-positive cells (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Monocular form deprivation amblyopia can lead to the decrease of Egr-1 protein and mRNA expression in visual cortex, and then promote the occurrence and development of amblyopia.

OBJECTIVES: As reported previously, tear film surface quality (TFSQ) should be considered in contact lens (CL) fitting. This study followed noninvasive keratograph tear film break-up time (NIKBUT) in CL wearers for 12 months to validate its clinical utility in predicting CL performance. METHODS: Fifty-five subjects (M/F=17/38) aged 26±4 years were prescribed silicone hydrogel or hydrogel CLs. The study included baseline measurements without CLs; 2 visits for CL fitting and control; follow-up after 3, 6, and 12 months of CL wear; and postwear visit without CLs. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), 8-Item Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire (CLDEQ-8), first and mean NIKBUT (F/M-NIKBUT), fluorescein tear film break-up time (FBUT), and ocular surface staining were evaluated. RESULTS: Post hoc analysis of each pair of visits showed differences between baseline and all CL visits for F-NIKBUT, M-NIKBUT, FBUT, and corneal staining. No difference was reported in symptoms. In addition, differences between baseline and postwear visits were noted in OSDI, M-NIKBUT, FBUT, and corneal staining, with three of the latter parameters showing a downward trend. CONCLUSIONS: No changes in TFSQ and symptoms were reported over 12 months. Introducing NIKBUT as part of routine CL fitting is advised to improve CL fit and predict success.

Összefoglaló. Az agy és a szem vascularis katasztrófái számos esetben egymáshoz társuló vagy egymást elore jelzo kórképek. Az arteria centralis retinae occlusio az ér rekanalizációjának hiányában a retina szöveteinek irreverzibilis károsodását okozza. Sem a nemzetközi, sem a hazai stroke-irányelvek nem foglalkoznak az ocularis stroke problémakörével, annak ellenére, hogy az arteria centralis retinae occlusio okozta retinalis ischaemia minden tekintetben megfelel az akut ischaemiás stroke definíciójának. Az eddig rendelkezésre álló irodalmi adatok alapján arteria centralis retinae occlusio esetén az intravénás thrombolysis 4,5 órán belül alkalmazva növeli a szignifikáns mértéku visusjavulás esélyét. Az országban jelenleg 4 centrum (Pécsi Tudományegyetem, Szegedi Tudományegyetem, Debreceni Egyetem, Semmelweis Egyetem) tervezi az ocularis stroke kezelésében a thrombolysis bevezetését. A maradandó látásromlás és a szekunder cerebrovascularis események megelozése érdekében elengedhetetlen az alapellátásban és a társszakmákban dolgozó kollégákkal való szoros együttmuködés. Orv Hetil. 2021; 162(47): 1871-1875. Summary. Vascular events of the brain and the eye may occur concomitantly or sequentially. In the absence of recanalization, central retinal artery occlusion causes irreversible damage to the retinal tissues. Even though retinal ischemia secondary to central retinal artery occlusion meets the definition of acute ischemic stroke, neither the international nor the Hungarian stroke guidelines mention ocular stroke. Based on the available literature, intravenous thrombolysis of the central retinal artery within 4.5 hours of occlusion can increase the odds of significant vision improvement. Currently 4 centers (University of Pécs, Debrecen, Szeged, and Semmelweis University) are planning to introduce thrombolysis in the treatment of ocular stroke. To prevent permanent visual loss and secondary cerebrovascular events, timely intervention requires the collaboration between general practitioners and other specialties. RESUMO

Recent advances have identified significant associations between the composition and function of the gut microbiota and various disorders in organ systems other than the digestive tract. Utilizing next-generation sequencing and multiomics approaches, the microbial community that possibly impacts ocular disease has been identified. This review provides an overview of the literature on approaches to microbiota analysis and the roles of commensal microbes in ophthalmic diseases, including autoimmune uveitis, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and other ocular disorders. In addition, this review discusses the hypothesis of the "gut-eye axis" and evaluates the therapeutic potential of targeting commensal microbiota to alleviate ocular inflammation.

RESUMO

A new species of Pronura from the Luquillo Experimental Forest on Northeastern Puerto Rico is described and illustrated. Pronura yunquensis sp. nov. differs from other Neotropical Pronura in the absence of eyes and can be separated from other species of the genus by the presence of a head tubercle (De), the displacement of Di1 in Abd IV and the fused tubercles De+DL in Abd V. A key for identification to American species of Paramanura, Pronura and Paleonura is included.

Mind-wandering has been shown to largely influence our learning efficiency, especially in the digital and distracting era nowadays. Detecting mind-wandering thus becomes imperative in educational scenarios. Here, we used a wearable eye-tracker to record eye movements during the sustained attention to response task. Eye movement analysis with hidden Markov models (EMHMM), which takes both spatial and temporal eye-movement information into account, was used to examine if participants' eye movement patterns can differentiate between the states of focused attention and mind-wandering. Two representative eye movement patterns were discovered through clustering using EMHMM: centralized and distributed patterns. Results showed that participants with the centralized pattern had better performance on detecting targets and rated themselves as more focused than those with the distributed pattern. This study indicates that distinct eye movement patterns are associated with different attentional states (focused attention vs. mind-wandering) and demonstrates a novel approach in using EMHMM to study attention. Moreover, this study provides a potential approach to capture the mind-wandering state in the classroom without interrupting the ongoing learning behavior.

BACKGROUND: Sjögren's syndrome may be a risk factor for carotid artery stenosis. Bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) in a patient with Sjögren's syndrome was not reported before. In this report, we describe a female with Sjögren's syndrome who had acute visual loss due to ocular ischemic syndrome (OIS) with BCCAO. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old female with Sjögren's syndrome visited our clinic with acute visual loss in the left eye. The best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 2/100 in the left eye, and the intraocular pressure (IOP) was normal in both eyes. Ocular ischemic change was observed during the ophthalmic examination. Aortography and computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed nearly total occlusion of the bilateral CCA. Thus, OIS with BCCAO was diagnosed. The vision in the left eye improved to 30/100 after carotid artery stenting for the left common carotid artery. CONCLUSIONS: BCCAO may be present in patients with Sjögren's syndrome. Large vessel abnormalities should be considered when acute visual loss is found in a patient with Sjögren's syndrome.

Herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) causes ocular and orofacial infections. In rare cases, HSV-1 can cause encephalitis, which leads to permanent brain injuries, memory loss or even death. Host factors protect humans from viral infections by activating the immune response. However, factors that confer neuroprotection during viral encephalitis are poorly understood. Here we show that mammalian target of rapamycin complex 2 (mTORC2) is essential for the survival of experimental animals after ocular HSV-1 infection in vivo. We find the loss of mTORC2 causes systemic HSV-1 infection due to defective innate and adaptive immune responses, and increased ocular and neuronal cell death that turns lethal for the infected mice. Furthermore, we find that mTORC2 mediated cell survival channels through the inactivation of the proapoptotic factor FoxO3a. Our results demonstrate how mTORC2 potentiates host defenses against viral infections and implicate mTORC2 as a necessary factor for survival of the infected host.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Bomb blast injuries exerts a shearing force on the air-tissue interfaces, causing devastating ocular injury from the blast wave. Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are usually placed at different heights from the ground to induce more severe injury through ground blast reinforcement (GBR). However, there is still a lack of knowledge of the role of GBR and IED height from the ground on ocular biomechanics, and how they can affect the intraocular pressure (IOP) in the eye. This study aimed to estimate the IOP due to frontal IED explosion at different heights from the ground using a fluid-structure interaction model with and without GBR effects. METHODS: A 2 kg IED was placed within 5 m of the victim at 5 different heights from the ground, including 0, 0.42, 0.85, 1.27, and 1.70 m. Two different blast formulations were used to simulate the IED explosion: (a) spherical airburst, with no amplification of the initial shock wave due to interaction with the ground-surface, and (b) hemispherical surface-burst, where the initial blast wave is immediately reflected and reinforced by the ground (GBR). RESULTS: Results revealed that the blast wave due to GBR reaches to the skull prior to the IED blast itself. The GBR also reached to the skull ∼ 0.6 ms earlier when the IED was on the ground compared to the height of 1.70 m. The highest and lowest IOPs of ∼ 17,000 and ∼ 15,000 mmHg were observed at the IED heights of 1.70 and 0 m from the ground considering GBR. However, when the role of the GBR is ignored, IOP of ∼ 9,000 mmHg was observed regardless of the IED height from the ground. The deformation in the apex of the cornea was higher when considering the GBR (∼ 0.75 cm) versus no GBR (∼ 0.65 cm). Considering GBR led to higher stresses and strains in the sclera. CONCLUSIONS: When the role of GBR was ignored, the results showed similar patterns and magnitudes of stresses and deformations in the skull and eye regardless of the height of the IED from the ground, which was not the case when GBR was considered. The findings of this study suggest the critical role of GBR in ocular blast simulations.

Purpose: The pathogenesis of dry eye concomitant with autoimmune disease is different from that of dry eye without autoimmune disease. The aim of this study was to explore differences in the microbiota diversity and composition in dry eye with and without autoimmune disease. Methods: Swab samples from the inferior fornix of the conjunctival sac were obtained from dry eye patients without autoimmune disease (n = 49, dry eye group) and from those with autoimmune disease (n = 38, immdry eye group). Isolated bacterial DNAs from swabs were analyzed with 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Results: Analysis of the alpha diversity revealed no significant differences between subjects in the dry eye and immdry eye groups. Those in the immdry eye group had a distinct microbial composition compared with those in the dry eye group. The combination of the genera Corynebacterium and Pelomonas distinguished subjects in the immdry eye group from those in the dry eye group, with an area under the curve of 0.73 (95% CI = 0.62-0.84). For the same bacteria, the correlations between microbe abundance and the ocular surface parameters were different in the two groups. In addition, the functions of the microbial communities were altered in the two groups. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates changes in the composition and function of the ocular microbiome between subjects in the immdry eye and dry eye groups, which suggests that the potential pathogenesis is different.

Ocular local or systemic medication may cause drug-related dry eye, which has become one of the important types of dry eye. A missed diagnosis or misdiagnosis of this type of dry eye is easy to occur clinically. To arouse the attention of ophthalmologists, experts from the Chinese Branch of the Asian Dry Eye Society and other related academic organizations have combined the new research progress and clinical practice associated with this specific disease, in terms of its definition, classification, risk factors, related drug types, pathogenesis, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment principles and preventive measures, to form expert consensus opinions, hoping to promote the standardized diagnosis and treatment of drug-related dry eye in China.
