RESUMO

Peer-to-peer recruitment efforts are important in generating interest and participation of patients as partners in research but difficult to sustain when face-to-face interactions are limited. The Retinoblastoma Research and You! booklet, co-developed by patients, researchers and health professionals, serves as a guide for patient engagement in research while retaining an element of personalization. The Retinoblastoma Research and You! booklet was developed through two virtual workshops to iterate and finalize the booklet design and content. The booklet outlines how individual patients' lived experiences and skills can influence retinoblastoma research and highlights real-world examples of patient-partnered research activities at different stages of the research process.

OBJECTIVE: To build and validate an educational technology in the form of a booklet, aimed at the family members of people with venous ulcers to assist them in their care. METHODS: A methodological study, which went through the stages of bibliographic survey and situational diagnosis for the construction of the booklet and validation of content, appearance, and adequacy with judges and the target audience. The Content Validity Index, the Suitability Assessment of Materials, and the Concordance Index were used. RESULTS: In the validation with the content and appearance judges, the booklet showed an excellent overall Content Validity Index (tCVI=0.92). The technical judges evaluated the booklet as "superior" (average of 91%). The booklet underwent adjustments, and validation was performed with the target population, reaching an agreement rate higher than 75%. CONCLUSION: The educational booklet developed was validated for content and appearance and considered suitable for use by family members of people with venous ulcers.

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, Black individuals have higher stroke incidence and mortality when compared to white individuals and are also at risk of having lower stroke knowledge and awareness. With the need to implement focused interventions to decrease stroke disparities, the objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of an emergency department-based educational intervention aimed at increasing stroke awareness and preparedness among a disproportionately high-risk group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over a three-month timeframe, an emergency department-based, prospective educational intervention was implemented for Black patients in an urban, academic emergency department. All participants received stroke education in the forms of a video, written brochure and verbal counseling.  Stroke knowledge was assessed pre-intervention, immediately post-intervention, and at one-month post-intervention. RESULTS: One hundred eighty-five patients were approached for enrollment, of whom 100 participants completed the educational intervention as well as the pre- and immediate post- intervention knowledge assessments. Participants demonstrated increased stroke knowledge from baseline knowledge assessment (5.35 ± 1.97) at both immediate post-intervention (7.66 ± 2.42, p < .0001) and one-month post-intervention assessment (7.21 ± 2.21, p < .0001). CONCLUSIONS: Emergency department-based stroke education can result in improved knowledge among this focused demographic. The emergency department represents a potential site for educational interventions to address disparities in stroke knowledge.

OBJECTIVES: to understand the use of the booklet on breastfeeding in prison in times of COVID 19 by managers and health professionals who work with pregnant and breastfeeding women deprived of their liberty. METHODS: this is a descriptive, exploratory research with a qualitative approach, carried out from March to December 2020. Thirteen professionals who work in Brazilian prison institutions participated in the study and answered a semi-structured interview. The data obtained were submitted to content analysis. RESULTS: the use of the booklet proved to be strategic in facing the barriers resulting from the pandemic and offered updated information and guidelines that are indispensable for the continuity of breastfeeding within the Brazilian prison system. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: nursing participated in the organization of educational material as a tool for the promotion, protection and support of safe breastfeeding within the institutions of the prison system that serve pregnant and lactating women deprived of liberty.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational booklet on the knowledge, attitude and practice of a healthy lifestyle in people with HIV. METHODS: Randomized clinical trial with 75 intervention group patients using the booklet, and 75 control group patients undergoing usual service care. Data collection occurred in four moments, with a Survey pertaining Knowledge, Attitude and Practice. Nonparametric analysis of variance of repeated measures was used. RESULTS: 70 participants in the intervention group and 74 in the control group completed the study. In terms of knowledge, there was no difference between groups, the booklet impact came late, increasing after reassessments. In attitudes, there was a difference between groups in the two- and four-month reassessments compared to the baseline. In practices, there was a difference in the intervention group compared to the control group at two, four, and six months compared to baseline. CONCLUSION: The booklet was effective in improving healthy lifestyle knowledge, attitudes, and practices in people with HIV.

To investigate the effectiveness of health promotion strategies for nonspecific low back pain in hospital workers, we compared the therapeutic effects of group-based core stability exercises and an educational booklet. Subjects participated in a 60-min core stability exercise on a weekly basis for 8 weeks (N = 24) or consulted an educational booklet for advice (N = 22). The numerical rating scale (NRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and the brief version of the World Health Organization's Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF) were used as outcome measures. The ODI, as well as the total score and domains of overall, physical, and psychological health in the WHOQOL-BREF were significantly improved in the exercise group (p < 0.05). The NRS score significantly improved in the booklet group (p < 0.05). The total score, psychological domain, and environmental domain of the WHOQOL-BREF improved significantly in the exercise group compared with the booklet group (p < 0.05). Group-based core stability exercises and educational booklets are helpful to hospital workers in different ways for nonspecific low back pain. In contrast to the pain reduction by the educational booklet, more active participation in group-based core stability exercise can provide a better outcome in the overall quality of life, especially in the psychological and environmental domains of hospital workers.

PURPOSE: To investigate cancer patients' knowledge and attitudes regarding fatigue and the potential benefits and acceptability of a brief information booklet. METHODS: The CARPE DIEM study assessed knowledge and attitudes regarding fatigue in a diverse group of 50 cancer patients before (T0) and about one (T1) and four months (T2) after reading the booklet. At T1, participants additionally rated its usefulness. RESULTS: At baseline, 37.5% of respondents did not know the term "fatigue" or what it meant. Those who already knew something about fatigue mainly had obtained their information from booklets, books, or articles (63.3%) and/or the internet (46.7%). Overall, knowledge gaps existed, particularly about potential fatigue treatment options and whether fatigue is an indicator of cancer progression. Furthermore, 56.4% felt poorly informed, and 46.1% reported feeling helpless in the face of fatigue. Lower knowledge at baseline was significantly associated with lower education and older age. At T1 and T2, there were significant improvements in several knowledge questions and attitudes. Patient-reported benefits included getting new information about fatigue (91.1%), awareness of not being alone with their problems (89.7%), taking appropriate actions (72.9%), and encouragement to talk about their fatigue with family/friends (55.3%) or with a health professional (52.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Specific gaps were identified in the provision of information and education for cancer patients about fatigue. A low-cost intervention asking to read a brief information booklet was associated with improved knowledge. This could be considered as a first step offered as part of a bundle of further efforts to improve knowledge and care of fatigue.

BACKGROUND: Hypoglycaemia is a potentially serious condition, characterised by lower-than-normal blood glucose levels, common in people with diabetes (PWD). It can be prevented and self-managed if expert support, such as education on lifestyle and treatment, is provided. Our aim was to conduct a process evaluation to investigate how ambulance staff and PWD perceived the "Hypos can strike twice" booklet-based ambulance clinician intervention, including acceptability, understandability, usefulness, positive or negative effects, and facilitators or barriers to implementation. METHODS: We used an explanatory sequential design with a self-administered questionnaire study followed by interviews of people with diabetes and ambulance staff. We followed the Medical Research Council framework for process evaluations of complex interventions to guide data collection and analysis. Following descriptive analysis (PWD and staff surveys), exploratory factor analysis was conducted to identify staff questionnaire subscales and multiple regression models were fitted to identify demographic predictors of overall and subscale scores. RESULTS: 113 ambulance staff members and 46 PWD completed the survey. We conducted interviews with four ambulance staff members and five PWD who had been attended by an ambulance for a hypoglycaemic event. Based on surveys and interviews, there were positive attitudes to the intervention from both ambulance staff and PWD. Although the intervention was not always implemented, most staff members and PWD found the booklet informative, easy to read and to use or explain. PWD who completed the survey reported that receiving the booklet reminded and/or encouraged them to test their blood glucose more often, adjust their diet, and have a discussion/check up with their diabetes consultant. Interviewed PWD felt that the booklet intervention would be more valuable to less experienced patients or those who cannot manage their diabetes well. Overall, participants felt that the intervention could be beneficial, but were uncertain about whether it might help prevent a second hypoglycaemic event and/or reduce the number of repeat ambulance attendances. CONCLUSIONS: The 'Hypos may strike twice' intervention, which had demonstrable reductions in repeat attendances, was found to be feasible, acceptable to PWD and staff, prompting reported behaviour change and help-seeking from primary care. In the U.S., black men are at highest risk for requiring kidney transplants but are among those least likely to register for organ donation. Prior outreach used videos culturally targeted for Black communities, yet registration rates remain insufficient to meet demand. Therefore, we assessed whether generic versus videos culturally targeted or personally tailored based on prior organ donation beliefs differentially increase organ donor registration. In a randomized controlled trial, 1,353 participants in Black-owned barbershops viewed generic, targeted, or tailored videos about organ donation. Logistic regression models assessed the relative impact of videos on: 1) immediate organ donor registration, 2) taking brochures, and 3) change in organ donation willingness stage of change from baseline. Randomization yielded approximately equal groups related to demographics and baseline willingness and beliefs. Neither targeted nor tailored videos differentially affected registration compared with the generic video, but participants in targeted and tailored groups were more likely to take brochures. Targeted (OR = 1.74) and tailored (OR = 1.57) videos were associated with incremental increases in organ donation willingness stage of change compared to the generic video. Distributing culturally targeted and individually tailored videos increased organ donor willingness stage of change among Black men in Black-owned barbershops but was insufficient for encouraging registration.Abbreviations: CI - confidence interval; DMV - Department of Motor Vehicles; BOBs - Black-owned barbershops; ODBI - organ donation belief index; ODWS - organ donation willingness stage of change; OR - odds ratio.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed mixed results for patient satisfaction by supplementing the preanesthetic assessment with written or audio-visual materials. We hypothesize that an audio-visual aid or a brochure in addition to face-to-face interview, leads to improved patient satisfaction and shortens the preanesthetic assessment duration. METHODS: We randomly assigned 1051 patients scheduled for preanesthetic assessment to three different groups: face-to-face preanesthetic interview alone (Group 1), videos before the interview (Group 2), and brochure before the interview (Group 3). All patients were asked to complete a postinterview questionnaire assessing patient satisfaction, knowledge gain, prior experience with anesthesia, and quality of supplementary media. RESULTS: The use of additional materials immediately before the preanesthetic interview did increase the overall patient satisfaction (F(2, 1003) = 3.10, P<0.05, ƞ2=0.006) but not the interview satisfaction (F(2, 1011) = 0.756, P>0.05) nor information gain (procedure explanations F(2, 987) = 0.400, P>0.05) or quality of answered questions (F(2, 1029) = 0.769, P>0.05). A statistically significant effect on interview satisfaction (F(13,996) = 5.15, P<0.01., ƞ2=0.063), overall satisfaction (F(13,988) = 4.25, P<0.01., ƞ2=0.053) and given explanations (F(13, 972) = 3.132, P<0.001, ƞ2=0.04) was associated with the explanation of different anesthetic techniques by the provider. No differences of response quality between the anesthesiologists was found (F(13, 1014) = 1.494, P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Additional information imparted in the form of an educational brochure or videos immediately before the preanesthetic assessment and interview does not lead to higher patient satisfaction.

Cancer patients and survivors frequently experience cognitive deficits, including problems with attention and memory. These symptoms, referred to as cancer-related cognitive dysfunction (CRCD), are associated with distress. Learning about CRCD and self-management strategies may improve functioning and quality of life in cancer survivors. This study describes the development and evaluation of a CRCD resource for cancer patients. An educational booklet was developed in accordance with multiple evidence-based guidelines for cancer patient education. Cancer patients on chemotherapy (N = 113; 34% men; median age 55, range 19-85) reviewed the booklet and self-reported CRCD knowledge before and after reading the booklet. They also gave ratings on general impressions of the booklet. Seventy-five percent of participants reported that the resource increased their self-reported CRCD knowledge. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test demonstrated that exposure to the booklet elicited a statistically significant change in self-reported knowledge (Z = - 7.13, p < 0.001). A repeated-measures ANCOVA determined that the means of self-reported CRCD knowledge were significantly different between pre- and post-exposure (F(1, 92) = 7.96, p = 0.006, η2 = 0.08). Exploratory analyses revealed that self-reported CRCD knowledge increased across all educational attainment levels from pre- to post-exposure. Ninety-one percent of participants reported that all patients undergoing cancer treatment would find this booklet helpful. Cancer patients at risk for cognitive challenges gained self-reported CRCD knowledge from the booklet, and they think this knowledge would be helpful to others. A resource that makes CRCD understandable and manageable can bridge the gap in self-rated knowledge across education levels.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have shown patient education material (PEM) in ophthalmology has been written at levels exceeding appropriate reading levels. However, information for readability in the field of oculoplastics remains limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the readability of patient educational brochures from the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS). METHODS: Patient educational brochures from ASOPRS were analyzed for readability. The body of text from all 18 ASOPRS patient brochures was analyzed by ten validated tests for English readability assessment: Flesch Reading Ease Test (FRE), Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG), Coleman-Liau Index (CLI), Gunning Fog Index (GFI), New Dale-Chall Readability (NDC), FORCAST, Fry Graph Readability (FG), Raygor Readability Estimate (RRE), and New Fog Count (NFC). RESULTS: The mean (± SD) readability scores from the 18 ASOPRS patient brochures were 48 (4.3), 11.0 (0.8), 13.0 (0.7), 11.7 (0.8), 13.6 (0.9), 11.3 (0.8), 11.1 (0.5), 12.1 (1.5), 12.2 (1.0), and 10.6 (1.3) for FRE, FKGL, SMOG, CLI, GFI, NDC, FORCAST, FG, RRE, and NFC, respectively. All ten of the mean readability scores were above the recommended reading levels. CONCLUSIONS: These findings show that the average patient may have difficulty understanding educational information provided by ASOPRS patient brochures, thereby hindering their ability to make informed decisions on their healthcare. Revision with readability as a primary goal, with input from patients and caregivers, may be necessary to improve health literacy among patients who seek oculoplastic care.

OBJECTIVE: Adult cochlear implant (CI) candidates seeking to make an informed decision about cochlear implantation can find themselves needing to quickly understand large volumes of complex information provided by different professionals in different formats. This study investigates the suitability, within a health literacy context, of one of those sources of information: the CI brochure. DESIGN: A single-observation design. STUDY SAMPLE: Thirty English passages of approximately 100-words each were sampled from 15 sections of seven CI brochures. All brochures were readily available to the general public on the Australian websites of four CI manufacturers at the time of the analysis (June 2019). RESULTS: Analyses by two examiners using the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM) classified all 15 sections from all seven CI brochures as being "not suitable" for general, adult readers. Analyses by the same examiners using four readability formulae (Flesch Reading Ease Scale, Fry Readability Graph, Flesch-Kincaid Readability Formula, and the Fog index) showed sampled passages from the 15 sections were written at a level best suited for persons with 10 to 14 years of schooling. CONCLUSIONS: Brochures intended for adult CI candidates should be revised to improve their suitability and readability for adult CI candidates. Specific recommendations are suggested.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Alcohol consumption is increasing among older adults. Rethink My Drink is a brief internet-delivered intervention to reduce alcohol consumption and related harms, adapted specifically for older adults. This protocol for a large-scale randomised controlled trial will evaluate whether Rethink My Drink is effective in reducing alcohol consumption and cognitive decline in a sample of older risky drinkers, compared with an active control. DESIGN: 1:1 parallel group, randomised controlled trial. SETTING: Online trial in Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Hazardous or harmful drinkers (defined as those scoring ≥5 on the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test [AUDIT]) age 60 to 75 years old (n = 842). Participants will be recruited from August 2021 to August 2022 through online social media advertisements and community networks. INTERVENTION AND COMPARATOR: Participants will be randomly allocated to receive access to Rethink My Drink (intervention) or Alcohol: The Facts (comparator), an online patient information booklet provided by New South Wales (NSW) Health. MEASUREMENTS: Primary outcomes include (i) average weekly standard drinks and (ii) rate of cognitive decline. Secondary outcomes include (i) typical quantity of drinks per drinking day; (ii) heavy episodic drinking; (iii) age-specific risky drinking; (iv) alcohol-related harms; (v) subjective cognitive complaints; and (vi) quality of life. All primary and secondary outcomes will be assessed at baseline, post-intervention (4 weeks) and 12 months. Effectiveness will be evaluated using multilevel linear regression, adjusting for baseline demographic differences. Bonferroni adjustments will be used to control for multiple comparisons. Multiple imputation, regression weighting and sensitivity analyses will assess the effect of attrition. COMMENTS: This will be the first large-scale trial, internationally, to examine whether a brief internet-delivered intervention is effective in reducing alcohol consumption and cognitive decline among older adults. If successful, the intervention will provide an accessible and highly scalable treatment to reduce risky alcohol consumption in older adulthood.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the effectiveness of a simple, low-cost educational brochure in improving disposal rates of unused opioids after outpatient upper extremity surgery. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled eligible adult patients from a peripheral nerve clinic between November 2017 and September 2018. Patients either received or did not receive the educational brochure, which outlined a simple method to dispose of unused opioids and completed a survey at 2 weeks after surgery. We compared the proportion of patients who disposed of unused opioids after surgery between the group that had received the brochure and the group that had not. Categorical data were analyzed with χ2 test, proportions data with binomial tests, and numerical data with Mann-Whitney U test, all with a significance level of P < .05. RESULTS: There were 339 survey respondents. Nineteen patients who did not meet inclusion criteria were excluded. Of the 320 remaining patients, 139 received the brochure and 181 did not. An additional 55 patients were excluded due to preoperative opioid use. Overall, 35.3% of recipients and 38.3% of those who did not receive the brochure used all of their prescribed opioid medication (P = .625; confidence interval = -14.6%-8.8%). Among patients with unused opioid medication, a significantly higher proportion of brochure recipients disposed of the medicine compared with those who did not receive the brochure (46.7% vs 19.6%, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Distribution of an educational brochure significantly improved disposal of unused opioids after surgery. This easily implemented intervention can improve disposal of unused opioids and ultimately decrease excess opioids available for diverted use in the community.

Resumo Objetivo analisar a percepção dos pais sobre as práticas de educação em saúde desenvolvidas pelos enfermeiros na Unidade Neonatal que facilitaram a aquisição de competências parentais para uma tomada de decisão fundamentada. Método estudo exploratório e descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa. Participaram 13 pais com filhos internados, pela primeira vez, em uma Unidade Neonatal portuguesa. Os dados foram colhidos entre fevereiro e agosto de 2020, por meio de grupos focais, processados no software Interface de R pour Analyses Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionneires, através da Classificação Hierárquica Descendente e da Análise de Similitude. Resultados da Classificação Hierárquica Descendente, emergiram quatro classes: "Necessidades de informação", "Lacunas na informação", "Disponibilidade para informar"; "Práticas facilitadoras da educação em saúde". Conclusão e implicações para a prática os pais consideraram como práticas facilitadoras da educação em saúde a tecnologia digital aliada à disponibilidade dos enfermeiros para informar e explicar, bem como propiciar um ambiente empático e informal. Tal resultado pode subsidiar o desenvolvimento de intervenções de enfermagem de educação em saúde para pais na Unidade Neonatal, com recurso à tecnologia digital.


Resumen Objetivo analizar la percepción de los padres sobre las prácticas de educación en salud desarrolladas por enfermeras de la Unidad Neonatal que facilitaron la adquisición de habilidades parentales para la toma de decisiones informada. Método estudio exploratorio descriptivo, con abordaje cualitativo. Participaron 13 padres con hijos hospitalizados, por primera vez, en una Unidad Neonatal Portuguesa. Los datos fueron recolectados entre febrero y agosto de 2020, a través de grupos focales, procesados en el software Interface de R pour Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionneires, a través de la Clasificación Jerárquica Descendente y el Análisis de Similitud. Resultados surgieron cuatro clases de la Clasificación Jerárquica Descendente: "Necesidades de información"; "Brechas de información"; "Disponibilidad para informar"; "Prácticas facilitadoras de la educación para la salud". Conclusión e implicaciones para la práctica los padres consideraron prácticas facilitadoras para la educación en salud la tecnología digital combinada con la disponibilidad de enfermeras para informar y explicar, además de brindar un ambiente empático e informal. Este resultado puede apoyar el desarrollo de intervenciones de enfermería de educación para la salud para los padres en Unidad Neonatal, con el uso de tecnología digital.


Abstract Objective to analyze parents' perception of health education practices developed by nurses in a Neonatal Unit that facilitated the acquisition of parenting skills for an informed decision-making. Method this is an exploratory, descriptive and qualitative study. We included 13 parents with children hospitalized for the first time in a Portuguese Neonatal Unit. Data were collected between February and August 2020, through focus groups, processed in the software Interface de R pour Multidimensionnelles de Textes et de Questionneires, through Descending Hierarchical Classification and Similitude Analysis. Results four classes emerged from the Descending Hierarchical Classification: "Information needs"; "Information gaps"; "Availability to inform"; "Facilitating health education practices". Conclusion and implications for practice parents considered digital technology combined with nurses' availability to inform and explain, as well as provide an empathetic and informal environment as facilitating practices for health education. These results can support health education nursing interventions for parents at the Neonatal Units using digital technology.

PURPOSE: As access to cancer care expands in low-income countries, developing tools to educate patients is paramount. We took a picture booklet, which was initially developed by the nonprofit Global Oncology for Malawi and Rwanda, and adapted it for use in Nigeria. The primary goal was to assess acceptability and provide education. The secondary goals were (1) to describe the collaboration, (2) to assess knowledge gained from the intervention, (3) to assess patient understanding of their therapy intent, and (4) to explore patient's experiences via qualitative analysis. METHODS: We piloted the original English booklet at a single site and requested feedback from patients and providers. The booklet was updated; translated into Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Pidgin English; and used at three additional sites. For the three-site cohort, we collected basic demographics, pretest and post-test assessing content in the booklet, and performed a qualitative analysis. RESULTS: The original booklet was widely acceptable and recommended by patients at site one (n = 31) and by providers (N = 26) representing all four sites. In the three-site cohort (n = 103), 94% of patients recommended the booklet. An immediate post-test focusing on when patients should present to care showed a statistically significant improvement in one of the seven questions. Fifty-one percent of the patients (n = 103) knew their treatment intent (curative v palliative). Qualitative analysis highlighted that the patient's thoughts on cancer are dominated by negative associations, although curability and modern therapy are also frequently cited. CONCLUSION: We adapted an educational booklet to a novel context and had it delivered by local partners. The booklet was widely recommended to future patients. The booklet had an impact on patient's knowledge of cancer treatment, potentially allowing for decreased abandonment.
