RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The article presents, from a diachronic perspective, the concerns of valorization and preservation of the documentary heritage through digitisation projects in the Romanian Library System. The development of the argument is made starting from the analysis of the interest in the subject in international literature (through a bibliometric analysis) and the investigation of the online presence of libraries expressed statistically from the typology of forms of representation, to specific digital products and services, thus highlighting how they evolved in the sense of diversifying and modernizing the products and services provided and taking into account the political, economic, and technological constraints. METHODS: The evaluation of the involvement of Romanian libraries in digitisation activities was done through the such research methods as content analysis and scientometric research, which allowed the carrying out of a longitudinal case study extended for the period 2007-2022, during the unravelling of the events. RESULTS: The most representative initiatives for the creation of the Digital Library of Romania and the involvement of libraries in national and European projects are presented, and examples of good practices are highlighted, including political and administrative concerns to support protection and capitalization through the digitisation of the libraries' heritage. This study is the first in Romanian specialized bibliography that proovides an overall and evolutionary perspective on the national project of digitisation of the documentary cultural heritage. Analyzing a large number of official documents and library web addresses has been a major challenge. CONCLUSIONS: During the analyzed period (2007-2022), there have been numerous initiatives and digitisation projects, but the results have not always met expectations. From the experience of Romanian libraries, it can be concluded that digital content development initiatives have not always been successful because of the absence or insufficient commitment of the sustainability component.

RESUMO

High-dimensional LASSO (Hi-LASSO) is a powerful feature selection tool for high-dimensional data. Our previous study showed that Hi-LASSO outperformed the other state-of-the-art LASSO methods. However, the substantial cost of bootstrapping and the lack of experiments for a parametric statistical test for feature selection have impeded to apply Hi-LASSO for practical applications. In this paper, the Python package and its Spark library are efficiently designed in a parallel manner for practice with real-world problems, as well as providing the capability of the parametric statistical tests for feature selection on high-dimensional data. We demonstrate Hi-LASSO's outperformance with various intensive experiments in a practical manner. Hi-LASSO will be efficiently and easily performed by using the packages for feature selection. Hi-LASSO packages are publicly available at https://github.com/datax-lab/Hi-LASSO under the MIT license. The packages can be easily installed by Python PIP, and additional documentation is available at https://pypi.org/project/hi-lasso and https://pypi.org/project/Hi-LASSO-spark.

RESUMO

As a typical public place, a university library has a large collection of books with heavy fire load, dense population, and large flow of people. The situation of safe evacuation in case of fire is very serious. This study utilizes Revit, Pyrosim, and Pathfinder software to research evacuation of a university library. First, a Building Information Modeling (BIM) is constructed based on Revit software in 1:1 scale. Second, the evacuation passage with the highest utilization rate was determined through Pathfinder software. According to the "most unfavorable principle," the location near it was assumed to be where the fire occurred. Pyrosim software was used to determine the smoke spread, visibility, CO concentration, temperature, and other conditions at each stairway exit in case of fire. Finally, the evacuation situation is compared with that after man-made route planning. The results indicate that evacuation exits 1#, 7#, 13#, 19#, and 23# have the highest utilization rate. The safe evacuation time was 739.275 s, which was shortened to 638.025 s after man-made route planning, a 13.67% increase in evacuation efficiency. Evacuation efficiency can be significantly improved by increasing broadcast guidelines, adding signs, widening staircases, and other optimization suggestions, which can provide reference for the study of evacuation effects in public places and the improvement of the layout of public facilities.

RESUMO

Public libraries have conducted collection diversity audits, but this is the first known report of a diversity audit in the hospital library community. A two-part questionnaire was sent to hospital librarians to determine their use of diversity audits in collection management and to provide a tool for a preliminary assessment of their collections' diversity. Results of the questionnaire indicate that developing diversity within hospital library collections is important to these respondents. These librarians also support diversity in their library personnel, open access, researching critical gaps, and programming.

RESUMO

A plain, blank canvas does not look very beautiful; to make it aesthetically appealing requires adding structure and complexity. But how much structure is best? In other words, what is the relationship between beauty and complexity? It has long been hypothesized that complexity and beauty meet at a "sweet spot," such that the most beautiful images are neither too simple nor too complex. Here, we take a novel experimental approach to this question, using an information-theoretic approach to object representation based on an internal "skeletal" structure. We algorithmically generated a library of two-dimensional polygons and manipulated their complexity by gradually smoothing out their features-essentially decreasing the amount of information in the objects. We then stylized these shapes as "paintings" by rendering them with artistic strokes, and "mounted" them on framed canvases hung in a virtual room. Participants were shown pairs of these mounted shapes (which possessed similar structures but varied in skeletal complexity) and chose which shape looked best by previewing each painting on the canvas. Experiment 1 revealed a "Goldilocks" effect: participants preferred paintings that were neither too simple nor too complex, such that moderately complex shapes were chosen as the most attractive paintings. Experiment 2 isolated the role of complexity per se: when the same shapes were scrambled (such that their structural complexity was undermined, while other visual features were preserved), the Goldilocks effect was dramatically diminished. These findings suggest a quadratic relationship between aesthetics and complexity in ways that go beyond previous measures of each and demonstrate the utility of information-theoretic approaches for exploring high-level aspects of visual experience.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behavior (SB) is a negative routine for health, especially during advancing age. Promoting an active lifestyle and reducing SB is a global endeavor. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of active school-based programs to interrupt prolonged sitting for daily physical activity (PA) and daily SB in children and adolescents. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted. Clinical trials analyzing the effect of interrupting prolonged sitting with active breaks and classroom-based PA were included. Studies that implemented PA in class without interrupting prolonged sitting or those that implemented multimodal interventions were excluded. A systematic search was conducted in 6 databases: Medline, WOS, Cochrane Library, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL and EMBASE. Primary outcomes were daily PA and daily SB, while moderate-to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was considered a secondary outcome. RESULTS: Six studies were included, with a total of 976 participants between 6-14 years. The interventions were heterogeneous in duration of the sitting time interruption (5-30 min), frequency (1-3 times per-day up to three times per-week) and total duration (five days to three years). 50% of the studies scored "high risk" of bias. Three meta-analyses were performed for daily PA, MVPA and SB, showing a significant improvement in the daily PA and MVPA. CONCLUSIONS: School-based programs aimed to interrupt prolonged sitting could be a good strategy to improve daily PA and MVPA levels. (Registration number: CRD42022358933).

RESUMO

Critical health literacy enables individuals to use cognitive and social resources for informed action on the wider determinants of health. Promoting critical health literacy early in the life-course may contribute to improved health outcomes in the long term, but children's opportunities to develop critical health literacy are limited and tend to be school-based. This study applies a settings-based approach to analyse the potential of public libraries in England to be supportive environments for children's development of critical health literacy. The study adopted institutional ethnography as a framework to explore the public library as an everyday setting for children. A children's advisory group informed the study design. Thirteen children and 19 public library staff and community stakeholders were interviewed. The study results indicated that the public library was not seen by children, staff, or community stakeholders as a setting for health. Its policies and structure purport to develop health literacy, but the political nature of critical health literacy was seen as outside its remit. A supersetting approach in which children's everyday settings work together is proposed and a conceptual model of the public library role is presented.

RESUMO

MOTIVATION: Pangenome graphs representing aligned genome assemblies are being shared in the text-based Graphical Fragment Assembly format. As the number of assemblies grows, there is a need for a file format that can store the highly repetitive data space efficiently. RESULTS: We propose the GBZ file format based on data structures used in the Giraffe short-read aligner. The format provides good compression, and the files can be efficiently loaded into in-memory data structures. We provide compression and decompression tools and libraries for using GBZ graphs, and we show that they can be efficiently used on a variety of systems. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: C++ and Rust implementations are available at https://github.com/jltsiren/gbwtgraph and https://github.com/jltsiren/gbwt-rs, respectively. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

RESUMO

MOTIVATION: As pan-genome approaches are largely employed for bacterial comparative genomics and evolution analyses, but still difficult to be carried out by non-bioinformatician biologists, there is a need for an innovative tool facilitating the exploration of bacterial pan-genomes. RESULTS: PanExplorer is a web application providing various genomic analyses and reports, giving intuitive views that enable a better understanding of bacterial pan-genomes. As an example, we produced the pan-genome for 121 Anaplasmataceae strains (including 30 Ehrlichia, 15 Anaplasma, 68 Wolbachia). AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: PanExplorer is written in Perl CGI and relies on several JavaScript libraries for visualization (hotmap.js, MauveViewer, CircosJS). It is freely available at http://panexplorer.southgreen.fr. The source code has been released in a GitHub repository https://github.com/SouthGreenPlatform/PanExplorer. A documentation section is available on PanExplorer website.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: Mathematical models are effective in studying cancer development at different scales from metabolism to tissue. Phase Field Models (PFMs) have been shown to reproduce accurately cancer growth and other related phenomena, including expression of relevant molecules, extracellular matrix remodeling and angiogenesis. However, implementations of such models are rarely published, reducing access to these techniques. To reduce this gap, we developed Mocafe, a modular open-source Python package that implements some of the most important PFMs reported in the literature. Mocafe is designed to handle both PFMs purely based on differential equations and hybrid agent-based PFMs. Moreover, Mocafe is meant to be extensible, allowing the inclusion of new models in future releases. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: Mocafe is a Python package based on FEniCS, a popular computing platform for solving partial differential equations. The source code, extensive documentation and demos are provided on GitHub at URL: https://github.com/BioComputingUP/mocafe. Moreover, we uploaded on Zenodo an archive of the package, which is available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6366052.

The professional interventions of social workers and librarians during the COVID-19 pandemic converged in the use of information technologies to meet the information needs of both medical personnel and patients and their families. The collaboration of these two professionals would significantly strengthen the multidisciplinary health team by improving the information flow channels that are carried out in the hospital, promoting humanized health care and carrying out social inclusion actions in libraries to provide greater and better opportunities and resources for the vulnerable population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Public librarians often address patron inquiries regarding health concerns. However, prior research indicates that public librarians may be unprepared to meet the health information requests of patrons. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the availability of health-themed courses in American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master of Library and Information Studies/Science (MLIS) programs. METHODS: Accredited MLIS programs were identified using the ALA directory. Curricula were reviewed for health content and public librarianship, children's, and young adult concentrations. Descriptive and bivariate analyses assessed the percent of programs that offered various health-related course content and the differences in availability of such content. RESULTS: Of the 59 accredited MLIS programs, only 35 (59.32%) listed at least one health elective and none listed a required health course. No MLIS programs that had a public library concentration (n = 21) listed a required or elective health course, two programs with a children's concentration (n = 25) listed health course electives, and one program with a young adult concentration (n = 25) listed a health course elective. CONCLUSION: ALA-accredited MLIS programs should consider increasing their offerings or requiring health-related courses to improve the training of public librarians to meet the health information needs of communities.

RESUMO

Background: Public libraries can contribute to reducing economic, social, and health inequities through their programming and practices. However, the extent to which libraries regularly provide programming that improve the social determinants of health (SDH) in underserved communities is unclear. Objective: This study explored the relationship between census tract demographic characteristics and library programming implicated in the SDH for underserved groups at risk for health disparities. Method: A stratified random sample of libraries (n = 235) who completed the 2017 Public Libraries Survey were recruited. Librarians completed surveys about their libraries' economic, social, and health-related programming. Libraries' census tract demographic characteristics were taken from the 2013-2017 American Community Survey. Linear regressions were estimated to determine the relationship between relevant census tract demographic characteristics and programming offered at libraries in the census tracts. Results: Higher proportions of racial and ethnic minorities were associated with more frequent economic and social programs, but results were mixed for health-related programs. Lower proportions of populations with no more than a high school diploma or GED were related to more frequent economic, social, and health-related programs. Conclusions: The inequitable distribution of SDH-related library programming highlights gaps in libraries' responsiveness to community needs. Libraries' programming likely perpetuate systemic inequities.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: Analysis of intra- and extracellular dynamic like vesicles transport involves particle tracking algorithms. The design of a particle tracking pipeline is a routine but tedious task. Therefore, particle dynamics analysis is often performed by combining several pieces of software (filtering, detection, tracking, etc.) requiring many manual operations, and thus leading to poorly reproducible results. Given the new segmentation tools based on deep learning, modularity and interoperability between software have become essential in particle tracking algorithms. A good synergy between a particle detector and a tracker is of paramount importance. In addition, a user-friendly interface to control the quality of estimated trajectories is necessary. To address these issues, we developed STracking, a Python library that allows combining algorithms into standardized particle tracking pipelines. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: STracking is available as a Python library using 'pip install' and the source code is publicly available on GitHub (https://github.com/sylvainprigent/stracking). A graphical interface is available using two napari plugins: napari-stracking and napari-tracks-reader. These napari plugins can be installed via the napari plugins menu or using 'pip install'. The napari plugin source codes are available on GitHub (https://github.com/sylvainprigent/napari-tracks-reader, https://github.com/sylvainprigent/napari-stracking). SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: Supplementary data are available at Bioinformatics online.

RESUMO

Public policy changes, such as new legislation, can seem distant from health knowledge and libraries services. The changes can provide, however, opportunities for health libraries and information services across sectors to demonstrate their value, supporting their ongoing funding and integration. The Health and Care Bill 2022 is an example of a public policy change that has specific implications in England, but also demonstrates the elements to look out for in new legislation as opportunities for health libraries and information services.
