RESUMO

Pharmacovigilance system is an extension of the original adverse drug reactions monitoring and reporting system as well as an internationally recognized basic system that must be matched with the whole life cycle supervision of drugs. European Union(EU)pharmacovigilance system, World Health Orgnization(WHO) Uppsala Monitoring Center system and ICH system are internationally recognized pharmacovigilance systems. They all have their own pharmacovigilance characteristics and could provide guarantee for clinical safe drug use. With the deepening of international communication, pharmacovigilance has also been developed in China. Pharmacovigilance of Chinese medicine is a new concept based on the existing pharmacovigilance system of chemical medicine and the characteristics of Chinese medicine. In ancient China, Chinese medicine also had its own ways of early warning. Ancient medical books have records on the toxicity classification, clinical pharmacovigilance and intoxication rescue of Chinese medicine. With the increase of public recognition of Chinese medicine in recent years, especially since the government issued the 13 th Five-Year Plan for the development of Chinese medicine, the pharmaceutical industry in China has paid more and more attention to the pharmacovigilance of Chinese medicine. However, the pharmacovigilance system of Chinese medicine has not yet been established, and it still needs to be explored and improved. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop the system to standardize pharmacovigilance-related activities of Chinese medicine. In this context, this study analyzed and learned the characteristics of pharmacovigilance systems of EU, ICH, and WHO Uppsala Monitoring Center, so as to provide some enlightenment for the establishment and improvement of pharmacovigilance system of Chinese medicine.

RESUMO

This article challenges the view that Daniel Defoe's A Journal of the Plague Year (1722) exploited or augmented the plague's horrors. It demonstrates that Defoe denounced writers who sensationalized plague and explores his use of A Journal to debunk terrifying accounts of the disease published during the Plague of Marseille (1720-22). Section one explores how Defoe's opposition to inciting fear was shaped by medical beliefs that fear increased susceptibility to disease and his observations about fear's socioeconomic repercussions. Section two examines his conviction that "Books frighted [people] terribly" and A Journal's attempts to discredit macabre images and tales circulated in contemporary plague writing. The conclusion addresses the relevance of Defoe's observations in the context of modern anxiety about pandemic disease, the resonance of his conclusions with recent scholarship on the media's augmentation of panic prior to pandemics, and the ethical questions A Journal poses for those writing about infectious diseases.

RESUMO

As one of the most popular medieval plague treatises produced during the Second Plague Pandemic, John of Burgundy's tract offers an excellent example of how medical books changed over time and place: in their material formats (such as manuscript to print), their textual contents and meanings, the people involved in their production, their readership, and sometimes even their purpose. The seemingly formulaic structure and medical contents of plague tracts has contributed to a long-standing perception that they were largely static or even ahistorical, one treatise easily exchanged for another. However, by examining copies of the treatise as individual and unique productions, rather than simply seeing the apparent uniformity of a few exemplars (or even the entire genre), we can begin to trace the itineraries through which they traveled and the rich tapestries of change that mark their life stories.

RESUMO

The paper reviews systematically the main ancient medical books with the origin literature included on acupuncture prescription. It is found that the origin literature with acupuncture prescription in successive dynasties mainly focuses on Qin-Han and Jin-Yuan Dynasties. In Jin, Tang and Song Dynasties, as well as Ming and Qing Dynasties, the literature mainly records the experience of medical masters in the previous dynasties. By taking "headache" and "retention of urine" as examples, the origins on the literature of clinical acupuncture prescription are explored, the distribution rules and characteristics are summarized. Moreover, the evidences and evaluation method of quality grading were explored on the ancient books with the origin literature of acupuncture prescription involved.

RESUMO

As a reflection of prominent cultural norms, children's literature plays an integral role in the acquisition and development of societal attitudes. Previous reports of male overrepresentation in books targeted towards children are consistent with a history of gender disparity across media and society. However, it is unknown whether such bias has been attenuated in recent years with increasing emphasis on gender equity and greater accessibility of books. Here, we provide an up-to-date estimate of the relative proportion of males and females featured as single protagonists in 3,280 children's books (0-16 years) published between 1960-2020. We find that although the proportion of female protagonists has increased over this 60-year period, male protagonists remain overrepresented even in recent years. Importantly, we also find persistent effects related to author gender, age of the target audience, character type (human vs. non-human), and book genre (fiction vs. non-fiction) on the male-to-female ratio of protagonists. We suggest that this comprehensive account of the factors influencing the rates of appearance of male and female protagonists can be leveraged to develop specific recommendations for promoting more equitable gender representation in children's literature, with important consequences for child development and society.

RESUMO

The surge of post-truth political argumentation suggests that we are living in a special historical period when it comes to the balance between emotion and reasoning. To explore if this is indeed the case, we analyze language in millions of books covering the period from 1850 to 2019 represented in Google nGram data. We show that the use of words associated with rationality, such as "determine" and "conclusion," rose systematically after 1850, while words related to human experience such as "feel" and "believe" declined. This pattern reversed over the past decades, paralleled by a shift from a collectivistic to an individualistic focus as reflected, among other things, by the ratio of singular to plural pronouns such as "I"/"we" and "he"/"they." Interpreting this synchronous sea change in book language remains challenging. However, as we show, the nature of this reversal occurs in fiction as well as nonfiction. Moreover, the pattern of change in the ratio between sentiment and rationality flag words since 1850 also occurs in New York Times articles, suggesting that it is not an artifact of the book corpora we analyzed. Finally, we show that word trends in books parallel trends in corresponding Google search terms, supporting the idea that changes in book language do in part reflect changes in interest. All in all, our results suggest that over the past decades, there has been a marked shift in public interest from the collective to the individual, and from rationality toward emotion.

RESUMO

We are pleased to publish the following postcard that was submitted by Dr. Robert (Bob) L. Koolkin from Beaufort, South Carolina, one or our long-time members. This is one of his favorite cards that was posted in 1903. He writes, "Please note the 'key' that the 'dentist' holds behind his back as well as both the two sets of initials, as well as the "Before" and "After" captions that the writer added. The brief note on the reverse also gives the reader a feel for the times (Figs. 1 A & B). Fig. B reads: "Am very sorry to hear you have such a bad face, hope you will soon be better. I wonder if you could send me a little green book from the cupboard in the top bedroom called Arnolds Handbook of Africa, also one of the British Isles, paper covers. Much Love, from Hilda".

RESUMO

Mongolians have a long history of using prescriptions, which can be classified into four stages as follows: the germination and experience accumulation stage before the 13 th century, the theoretical formation stage from the 13 th to 16 th century, the rapid development stage from the 17 th to 20 th century, and the leaping development stage from the mid-20 th century to the present. The prescriptions from the ancient classical or representative medical books have always been used by Mongolian physicians for generations, and they are still in use due to the definite curative effects. In 2008, the Notice on Issuing the Supplementary Provisions to the Registration and Management of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) described that China has attached more importance to the excavation and development of classical prescriptions. As stipulated in the Law of the People's Republic of China on Traditional Chinese Medicine, the classical prescriptions should be those available in ancient TCM classics and still in wide use, with exact curative effects, distinct features, and obvious advantages. This paper expounded the historical formation and development of classical prescriptions in Mongo-lian medicine, introduced the five most influential ancient medical books revealing the formation and development of these classic prescriptions, and traced the origin of such classical prescriptions as Wenguanmu Siwei Decoction, Shouzhangshen Bawei Decoction, Jianghuang Siwei Decoction and summarized the origin, development history and characteristics of classical prescriptions in Mongolian medicine, aiming to provide a reference for their further research and development.

RESUMO

The work of Peter Abelard (1079-1142) leaves no one indifferent. Why should the writings stir up such emotions long after he became a point of reference in the history of ideas? Perhaps the most important reason is that Abelard has always been more than the author of his books. For the historians of ideas he served as an example of what it is to lead an intellectually independent life, against the standards set by society and church. It is to the credit of scholars discussed in this review essay that this historical question arising from "doing philosophy" is addressed.

RESUMO

Caring for the Family Caregiver is published by Oxford University Press and introduces the novel framework of the Family Caregiver Communication Typology. The volume offers a close analysis of caregiver health literacy and patient outcomes and invites readers to consider the family system as the driver in shaping how family caregivers deal with chronic illness demands. The expertise of all authors (three health communication scholars and one nurse who is a health literacy expert) in the analysis illuminates the delicate balance between caregivers' ability to understand and communicate in the context of social determinants of health. The book shares the interwoven challenges of palliative care, family caregiving, and health literacy. Caring for the Family Caregiver establishes the urgent call to address family caregiver information and communication needs and leaves the reader empowered to make changes in their own clinical practice communication and/or develop family caregiving research that addresses cultural and social factors.

RESUMO

The Medical Theory (Yi Shuo) and The Mengqiu of Famous Medical Doctors in the Past Dynasties (Li Dai Ming Yi Meng Qiu) are two medical books that originated in the Song Dynasty. The two books quoted from The List of Medical Doctors (Ming Yi Lu) many times while the author and the issue time of The List of Medical Doctors (Ming Yi Lu) has not been clearly known up to know. It was found that there were 25 quotations in The Medical Theory (Yi Shuo) and 31 quotations in The Mengqiu of Famous Medical Doctors in the Past Dynasties (Li Dai Ming Yi Meng Qiu) from The List of Medical Doctors (Ming Yi Lu). The contents quoted in the two books are also found in The Mysterious Medical List (Shen Mi Ming Yi Lu) written by Dang Yongnian in the Song Dynasty. In this sense, it can be inferred that The List of Medical Doctors (Ming Yi Lu) mentioned above should be The Mysterious Medical List (Shen Mi Ming Yi Lu).

RESUMO

San Xiao Lun is a posthumous manuscript by Liu Wansu. It discussed the etiology, pathogenesis and therapeutic principles of diabetes with special prescriptions for it. Most references in this book came from the works of Liu Wansu himself and some of them came from the works of other sources, such as The Internal Cannon of Medicine. It can be seen that it was a book with Liu Wansu's rethinking and summerising about diabetes after he completed his other works. San Xiao Lun was first published in Ru Men Shi Qin in the Jin Dynasty. It was also cited by Yi Fang Lei Ju in Korea in 1445. It was fully recorded and published in Ru Men Shi Qin in the Wanli Period in the Ming Dynasty and therefore, became the basic version of the current one. After that, it envolved into Si Ku Quan Shu. In the end of the Qing Dynasty, this book was published independently with the comments by Zhou Xuehai, being one of the books in the Zhous' Series Medical Books(Zhou Shi Yi Xue Cong Shu).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: After preterm birth, infants are at high risk for delays in language development. A promising intervention to reduce this risk is represented by the exposure to parental voices through book-reading in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). This study investigated the possible advantages of book-reading to preterm neonates during their NICU stay on their subsequent language development. METHODS: 100 families of preterm infants were recruited. The parents of 55 preterm infants (Reading Group) received a colored picture-book on NICU admission and were supported to read to their neonate as often as possible and to continue after hospital discharge. Forty-five infants (Control Group) were recruited before the beginning of the intervention. Infant language development was assessed with the Hearing and Language quotients of the Griffith Mental Development Scale at the corrected ages of 3, 6, 9, 12, 18 and 24 months. RESULTS: Regardless of group membership, Hearing and Language mean quotients decreased between 9 and 18 months; nevertheless, this decrease was considerably reduced in the Reading group, compared to the Control Group. CONCLUSIONS: Reading in NICUs represents a suitable intervention that could positively influence language development and parent-infant relationships in preterm children. The study findings support its implementation as a preventive measure.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Teaching evidence-based medicine (EBM) is not an easy task. The role of the electronic book (e-book) is a useful supplement to traditional methods for improving skills. Our aim is to use an interactive e-book or PowerPoint to evaluate instructors' teaching effects on EBM. METHODS: Our study group was introduced to learning EBM using an interactive e-book available on the Internet, while the control group used a PowerPoint presentation. We adopted the Modified Fresno test to assess EBM skills both before and after their learning. EBM teaching sessions via e-book or PowerPoint were 20-30 min long, followed by students' feedback. We adopted Student's t-test to compare teachers' evaluation of their EBM skills prior to the class and the students' assessment of the teachers' instruction. We also adopted repeated measures ANCOVA to compare teachers' evaluation of their EBM skills using the Fresno test both before and after the class. RESULTS: We observed no difference regarding EBM skills between the two groups prior to their experimental learning, which was assessed by the Modified Fresno test. After learning, physicians in the study group ranked higher in choosing a case to explain which kind of research design was used for the study type of the question and explaining their choice (P = 0.024) as assessed by the post-test to pre-test Fresno test. Teaching effect was better in the e-book group than in the control group for the items, "I am satisfied with this lesson," "The teaching was of high quality," "This was a good teaching method," and "It aroused my interest in EBM." However, no differences were observed between the two groups in physicians who had more than 10 years' experience. CONCLUSIONS: The use of interactive e-books in clinical teaching can enhance a teacher's EBM skills, though not in more senior physicians. This may suggest that teaching methodology and activities differ for teachers' varying years of experience.

RESUMO

Ren Zhanshan, the author of Zhanshan Medical Records published in 1924. The date of his birth was unknown or incorrect according to the local chronicles of the Qing Dynasty and a variety of modern bibliographic and medical books. The time, when Zhanshan Medical Records was completed, was not clearly recorded or was claimed in Bingchen (1736), to be dated the first year of QianLong in the Qing dynasty. Based on the genealogy collected by descendants of the Ren family, it was found that he was born in the fifteenth year of Qianlong (1751) and died in the eighth year of Daoguang (1828). Additionally, according to the date of his medical experience recorded in the preface of the Zhanshan Medical Records, the writing date of this book was roughly between 1814 and 1823.
