OBJECTIVE: Vasovagal reaction (VVR) is an adverse reaction to blood donation. Applied muscle tension (AMT) has been reported to reduce the probability of VVR during blood donation; however, the results have been controversial. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis to systematically evaluate the effect of AMT in reducing VVR. METHODS: We searched six major databases using "applied muscle tension" and "blood donation-related vasovagal response" as keywords. Relevant articles published in English or Chinese between 1 January 2000 and 30 June 2021 were included in the analysis. The quality of the included articles was evaluated and publication bias was assessed by forest and funnel plots and by Egger's test. RESULTS: Fifty-one articles were identified, of which six were included according to the pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A fixed-effects model was adopted for effect size combination and revealed a relative risk of 0.52 (95% confidence interval 0.40 to 0.67). The AMT group was superior to the control in terms of VVR prevention. A funnel plot and Egger's test suggested that the findings were accurate and reliable with low publication bias. CONCLUSION: AMT could effectively reduce VVR during blood donation. Further multicenter studies with large sample sizes are needed to confirm these results.

Adverse effects of morphine on locomotor function after moderate to severe spinal cord injury (SCI) have been reported; however, the effects after mild SCI without damage of lumbar α-motoneurons have not been investigated. We investigated the effects of lumbar intrathecal morphine on locomotor function after mild thoracic SCI and the involvement of classic opioid receptor activation. A mild thoracic contusive SCI was induced in adult rats at the T9-T10 spine level under sevoflurane anesthesia. We evaluated the effects of single doses of intrathecal morphine and selective µ-, δ-, and κ-opioid receptor agonists, continuous infusion of intrathecal morphine for 72 hours, and administration of physiological saline on locomotor function and muscle tone in the hindlimbs. The numbers of damaged and total α-motoneurons in the lumbar spinal cord were also investigated. Single doses of morphine aggravated residual locomotor function after SCI but did not affect functional recovery. Single doses of morphine and µ- and δ-opioid receptor agonists significantly aggravated residual locomotor function with increases in muscle tone after SCI, and the effects of the drugs were reversed by naloxone. In contrast, continuous infusion of morphine led to persistent decline in locomotor function with increased muscle tone, which was not reversed by naloxone, but did not increase the number of damaged lumbar α-motoneurons. These results indicate that a single dose of morphine at an analgesic dose transiently increases muscle tone of the hindlimbs via activation of spinal µ- and δ- opioid receptors, resulting in further deterioration of locomotor function in the acute phase of mild SCI. Our results also suggest that an increased dose of morphine with prolonged administration leads to persistent decline in locomotor function with increased muscle tone via mechanisms other than direct activation of classical opioid receptors. Morphine should be used cautiously even after mild SCI.

El músculo tensor de la fascia lata es una estructura muscular que forma parte de la porción lateral de la pelvis y del muslo proximal. La patología de este músculo no es bien conocida y descrita en la literatura. Por el contrario, la hipertrofia y la seudohipertrofia del músculo tensor de la fascia lata son hallazgos por imagen relativamente frecuentes que a menudo no se diagnostican y entran en un diagnóstico diferencial con patologías más complejas y peligrosas. En este artículo, nuestro objetivo es describir las características anatómicas y funcionales del músculo tensor de la fascia lata, profundizando en la descripción del músculo en radiología, su patología y un resumen de la literatura sobre el tema.(AU)


The tensor fascia lata is a muscular structure that forms part of the lateral portion of the pelvis and proximal thigh. Because conditions affecting this muscle have not been widely reported and are relatively unknown, hypertrophy and pseudo-hypertrophy of the tensor fascia lata, although relatively common imaging findings, often go undiagnosed; instead, radiologists perform the differential diagnosis with more complex and more dangerous conditions. This article aims to review the anatomic and functional characteristics of the tensor fascia lata, going into detail about the radiological description of this muscle and pathological conditions that can affect it, as well as reviewing the relevant literature.(AU)

Today, many women are driven to subscribe to a more athletically oriented appearance ideal hallmarked by muscle tone (referred to as athletic- or fit-looking). However, the constellation of unhealthy eating and exercise behaviors that may accompany the pursuit of toned muscularity among women is not yet well characterized. To address this knowledge gap, our study evaluated the associations among the female drive for toned muscularity and both thinness-oriented disordered eating behaviors (e.g., dietary restriction) and muscularity-oriented disordered eating behaviors (e.g., excessive scrutiny of macro-nutrient values of food), as well as dimensions of compulsive exercise. Participants were 388 Australian undergraduate women who completed an online questionnaire including self-report measures of said constructs. Hierarchical regression models were used to determine whether the drive for toned muscularity accounted for unique variance in eating and exercise behaviors after adjusting for theoretically relevant covariates. Results indicated independent relationships between the drive for toned muscularity and several facets of thinness- and muscularity-oriented disordered eating, as well as compulsive exercise (e.g., exercise rigidity). Our findings further contribute to an emerging literature illustrating that women driven to attain a toned appearance may be vulnerable to engaging in a wide range of maladaptive eating and exercise practices.

Facial nerve injury results in degradation of the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and blocks neurotransmission between the pre- and postsynaptic structures, which are separated by a synaptic cleft. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes that degrade and modify the extracellular matrix, play critical roles in regulating NMJ remodeling. We previously demonstrated that MMP1, MMP2, MMP3, MMP7, and MMP9 are overexpressed in facial nerve-innervated orbicularis oris muscle after facial nerve injury in a rat model. In the present study, the MMP inhibitor prinomastat was administered to rats after facial nerve injury. The MMP levels, agrin expression, and muscle-specific kinase (MuSK) phosphorylation were evaluated. Variations in evoked electromyography (EEMG) amplitude were also recorded. Compared with the control group, MMP expression in the orbicularis oris after facial nerve injury was significantly reduced in the prinomastat group. Inhibition of MMP expression maintained agrin expression and MuSK phosphorylation; the NMJ morphology was also protected after the injury. Moreover, prinomastat treatment sustained EEMG amplitude and muscle tension after the injury. These findings indicate that inhibiting MMPs can protect the function and morphology of the NMJ and demonstrate the need for protection of the NMJ at early stages after facial nerve injury.

The claim that the effects of kinesiology tape are different depending on the direction of tape application needs to be clearly ascertained. This study aimed to determine the immediate effects of two forearm kinesiology tape applications on muscle tone, stiffness, and elasticity of young individuals. Thirty-nine participants (15 men and 24 women) were randomized (1:1:1) to: the facilitatory group, receiving kinesiology tape applied from origin to insertion; the inhibitory group, receiving kinesiology tape applied from insertion to origin; or, a control group, without any intervention. The mechanical properties - tone, elasticity, and stiffness - of the forearm muscles were measured with a handheld mechanical impulse-based myotonometric device before and 30 min after the kinesiology tape application. Only the application of kinesiology tape from origin to insertion significantly increased muscle tone [16.6 (2.5) to 17.4 (3.5) Hz, p = 0.036], stiffness [318.3 (52) to 355.0 (87) N/m, p = 0.004], and elasticity [0.98 (0.1) to 1.10 (0.1), p = 0.023]. No changes were observed in both inhibitory kinesiology tape and the control group. In conclusion, kinesiology tape application has different effects depending on the direction of the taping application. The facilitatory tapping increased muscle tone, elasticity, and stiffness.

Skeletal muscle unloading leads to the decreased electrical activity and decline of muscle tone. AIMS: Current study evaluated the effect of muscle tone preservation achieved by tetanus toxin (TeNT) treatment on signaling pathways regulating atrophic processes during unloading. MAIN METHODS: Four groups of rats were used: non-treated control (C), control rats with TeNT administration (CT), 7 days of unloading/hindlimb suspension with placebo (HS), and 7 days of unloading with TeNT administration (HST). KEY FINDINGS: Absolute and relative force of tetanic contractions was decreased by 65% in soleus muscle of HS rats when compared with C. Treatment with TeNT significantly lessened force decline in soleus muscle of HST rats when compared with HS. TeNT administration increased myosin heavy chain I beta (MyHC Iß) expression in CT rats and prevented MyHC Iß loss in HST group when compared with C rats. Desmin content was lower by 31.4% (p < 0.05) in HS group when compared with HST. Calpain-1 expression was increased in HS group when compared with C, CT and HST. There was a decrease in p-p70S6K content (41%, p < 0,05) and an increase in p-eEF2 content (77%, p < 0,05) in HS group when compared with C, while there were no significant differences in the content of these proteins between HST, CT and C groups. SIGNIFICANCE: Treatment with TeNT significantly diminished unloading-induced decline of soleus muscle mass and mechanical properties and affected the regulation of MyHC Iß expression. These effects are mediated by signaling pathways regulating protein synthesis and degradation.

PURPOSE: Despite the high prevalence of primary muscle tension dysphonia (MTD-1), its underlying mechanisms and their interrelationships have yet to be fully identified. The objectives of this integrative review were (a) to describe and classify the suggested underlying mechanisms for MTD-1, (b) to appraise the empirical evidence supporting each of the proposed mechanisms, and (c) to summarize the information in an integrative model. METHOD: PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL were searched for all publications pertaining to muscle tension dysphonia. Papers were retained if they included theoretical or empirical data pertaining to underlying mechanisms of MTD-1. A total of 921 papers initially qualified for screening, of which 100 remained for consideration in this review. Underlying mechanisms of MTD-1 were extracted using a consensus approach. RESULTS: Seven broad categories of putative mechanisms involved in MTD-1 were identified: psychosocial, autonomic, sensorimotor, respiratory, postural, inflammatory, and neuromuscular. These categories were further divided into 19 subcategories detailed in the body of this review article. Based on the reviewed evidence, our proposed integrative model presents MTD-1 as an idiosyncratic motor adaptation to physiological perturbation or perceived threat. Under this model, physiologically or psychologically aversive stimuli can instigate a series of motor adaptations at multiple levels of the nervous system, ultimately disturbing muscle activation patterns and their biomechanical outcomes. Importantly, these adaptations appear to have the potential to become chronic even after threatening stimuli are withdrawn. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed model highlights the importance of personalized rehabilitation in MTD-1 treatment. In young adults, muscle sprains and strains leading to muscle tightness are considered short-term and believed to have no ill effects on quality of life. However, recent advances in the science indicate that muscle tightness is an invisible condition that can limit life activities. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and characteristics of muscle tightness in young adults. The study used descriptive quantitative design. One hundred individuals aged between 18 and 27 years completed a survey based upon a validated muscle tightness measurement tool. Seventy-two percent of participants reported experiencing muscle tightness that limited their daily living and recreational activities. Fifty-six percent reported experiencing pain with muscle tightness. Women were more likely than men to experience muscle tightness. Awareness, prompt evaluation, and treatment of this condition are key to preventing negative consequences associated with chronic muscle tightness.

BACKGROUND: Not much is known about developmental motor disorders in the first year of life of children diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the occurrence of asymmetry or muscle tone disorders in the first year of life in adolescents with IS and their healthy counterparts. METHODS: The parents of adolescents with IS and without scoliosis completed a survey on the occurrence of asymmetry, abnormal muscle tone, and physiotherapy in their children in the first year of life. Pearson's chi square test and Cramer's coefficient were used. RESULTS: The final analysis included 527 surveys completed by parents of adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis (150) and without scoliosis (377). A significantly higher frequency of asymmetry (p= 0.001) and muscle tone disorders (p= 0.001) was noted in adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. The results also revealed a significant association between scoliosis and asymmetry (p= 0.001), as well as muscle tone (p= 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Developmental asymmetry or improper muscle tone in the first year of life could be considered a potential factor in the development of scoliosis; however, this hypothesis should be confirmed in future studies. Infants diagnosed with developmental disorders require systematic observation.

Horses' muscular tension during acute stress remains unexplored. Our aim was to assess muscular, behavioral, cortisol, and hematocrit responses to social isolation (ISO), novel object exposure (NOV), and sham clipping (CLIP). Altered stress responses were expected. Eight mature Standardbred horses (four mares and four geldings) were exposed to acute stressors and a control period (CON) in a balanced, replicated 4×4 Latin Square experimental design with 3 min treatment periods and 10 min washout periods. Surface electromyography collected from the masseter, brachiocephalas, cervical trapezius, and longissimus dorsi was processed to derive average rectified value (ARV) and median frequency (MF) during the initial, middle, and final 30 s of treatments. ARV and MF data were log transformed then analyzed using a mixed model, repeated measures ANOVA along with plasma cortisol and hematocrit. Behavior data were analyzed using a negative binomial distribution mixed model ANOVA. CLIP resulted in greater (p < 0.05) log ARV in the masseter (1.5 + 1.5%, mean + SD) and brachiocepahlas (2.2 + 2.0%) than CON (-1.2 + 1.4%, 0.1 + 1.5%). ISO resulted in greater (p < 0.05) log ARV in the masseter (0.2 + 1.3%) and cervical trapezius (0.6 + 1.3%) than CON (-1.2 + 1.4%, -1.0 + 1.7%). ISO increased (p < 0.05) the total number of stress-related behaviors and hematocrit. No changes in cortisol were observed. We suggest that muscular tension can be used as an indicator of acute stress in horses. Incorporating muscle activity into an array of measurements may provide a more nuanced understanding of stress responses.

Spasticity is a disabling characteristic of neurological disorders, described by a velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone during passive stretch. During the last few years, many studies have been carried out to assess spasticity using wearable IMU (inertial measurements unit) sensors. This review aims to provide an updated framework of the current research on IMUs wearable sensors in people living with spasticity in recent studies published between 2017 and 2021. A total of 322 articles were screened, then finally 10 articles were selected. Results show the lack of homogenization of study procedures and missing apparatus information in some studies. Still, most studies performed adequately on measures of reporting and found that IMUs wearable data was successful in their respective purposes and goals. As IMUs estimate translational and rotational body motions, we believe there is a strong potential for these applications to estimate velocity-dependent exaggeration of stretch reflexes and spasticity-related characteristics in spasticity. This review also proposes new directions of research that should be challenged by larger study groups and could be of interest to both researchers as well as clinicians. The use of IMUs to evaluate spasticity is a promising avenue to provide an objective measurement as compared to non-instrumented traditional assessments.

RESUMO

Almost everyone is familiar with "tense muscles", but what is muscle tension physiologically behind? Are tense muscles more active; do they have problems relaxing? Are they harder or stiffer than asymptomatic muscles? In this work, current evidence regarding the activity and stiffness of tense neck muscles is presented. Further, measurement methods and their limitations are explained. These limitations reveal the shortcomings of the current knowledge and the need for further research. Finally, a recently funded research project on the measurement of tense muscles is presented.

The faculty of language allows humans to state falsehoods in their choice of words. However, while what is said might easily uphold a lie, how it is said may reveal deception. Hence, some features of the voice that are difficult for liars to control may keep speech mostly, if not always, honest. Previous research has identified that speech timing and voice pitch cues can predict the truthfulness of speech, but this evidence has come primarily from laboratory experiments, which sacrifice ecological validity for experimental control. We obtained ecologically valid recordings of deceptive speech while observing natural utterances from players of a popular social deduction board game, in which players are assigned roles that either induce honest or dishonest interactions. When speakers chose to lie, they were prone to longer and more frequent pauses in their speech. This finding is in line with theoretical predictions that lying is more cognitively demanding. However, lying was not reliably associated with vocal pitch. This contradicts predictions that increased physiological arousal from lying might increase muscular tension in the larynx, but is consistent with human specialisations that grant Homo sapiens sapiens an unusual degree of control over the voice relative to other primates. The present study demonstrates the utility of social deduction board games as a means of making naturalistic observations of human behaviour from semi-structured social interactions.
