RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The transition from independent living to assisted living is a significant life process that may be compared to crossing a bridge. Faith community nurses can support older adults through this transition. This article presents a conceptual meaning of transition, a framework with a spiritual dimension, and implications for Christian nurses. A case study illustrates how this transition typically occurs across time.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to empower interprofessional Nigerian healthcare volunteers with knowledge and skills to promote community health. The U.S. researcher engaged in community-based participatory research in the context of a long-term partnership of annual short-term medical missions. Using a pre/posttest study design, three Nigerian nurses and the researcher co-taught Foundations of Faith Community Nursing in a 3-day class to 76 participants. The t-test analysis and informal evaluation of participants' performance at a mobile clinic demonstrated strong evidence of learning, suggesting that the teaching was an effective method to empower members of the Nigerian interprofessional team with the knowledge and skill to provide effective culturally congruent community healthcare.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Faith community nursing, also known as congregational nursing or parish nursing, is a relatively new addition in the pantheon of nursing subspecialties. Nurses working in this role tailor their services according to the needs of the faith community and often to the community at large. This article describes how one nurse pursued the specialty and helped initiate faith community nursing in her own church.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Spirituality and faith, which are cornerstones of African American churches, also create a receptive setting for health improvement activities. This article presents participant responses to a health improvement intervention to promote church members' self-care. Using the Body & Soul program, the faith community nurse involved laypersons as health ministry team members to support urban African American churchgoers in learning and practicing healthier eating and self-care practices. The health intervention used the Patient Activation Measure (PAM) and incorporated Scripture into weekly sessions, revealing an increase in participants' self-care activation activities.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Research regarding faith community nursing termination is scarce. Ziebarth (2018) surveyed faith community nurses (FCNs) who had experienced termination of their position. This article explores FCN feelings related to termination and provides an evidence-based practice component to translate the research into practice. Given that FCNs engage in deep relationships with clients, their feelings following termination express grief and lack of support. Support strategies as well as preemptive strategies that may be useful to prevent loss of an FCN position or ministry are presented.

RESUMO

Though faith community nurses (FCNs) serve many roles in churches and communities, little is known about their roles or effectiveness in public health interventions. This systematic review summarizes the literature on recent faith community nursing interventions, examining trends, evaluating rigor, and proposing future research directions. Articles were downloaded from PubMed and CINAHL, and 24 studies were included. Interventions addressed various health outcomes. The FCNs participated in research by recruiting participants, developing study measures, and implementing programs. Results reported mainly process evaluation and provided few outcomes. Better evaluation is needed to understand the effectiveness of FCNs in public health research.

RESUMO

Faith community nursing and holistic nursing are recognized by the American Nurses Association as nursing specialties. Both nursing specialties practice with the understanding that holistically caring for an individual as a unique whole in his or her totality including respecting and attending to a human being's spiritual and/or faith-based needs across the life span is integral in promoting health and healing. The purpose of this article is to present the evolution of faith community nursing and holistic nursing practice and to compare their similarities and differences based on each specialty's current Scope and Standards of Practice. Utilizing each specialty's Scope and Standards of Practice allowed the authors a fair, practical, and extensive means for presenting a comprehensive and inclusive comparison. Continued and partnered research should be conducted by both specialties to advance their scope and standards of practice, to support comprehensive evidence-based and outcome-based care that promotes health, healing, compassion and caring, and to educate others regarding each nursing specialty's role, value, and significant contributions to the art and science of nursing.

RESUMO

The high prevalence of hypertension among African Americans makes faith-based education programs culturally appropriate. Faith-enhanced health education is a way to reach these often healthcare-disenfranchised populations. With Every Heartbeat is Life (WEHL), a community-based heart health program, was enhanced with Scripture and prayer for this project. The program took place in an African American nondenominational church. The Scripture-enhanced WEHL program emphasized biblical teachings of self-care with standard lessons on nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation, and disease management interventions that increased knowledge of hypertension and associated cardiovascular risks.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: The number of older adults worldwide is growing; the incidence of social isolation and loneliness among this population is also increasing. Social isolation and loneliness can have significant physical, mental, and spiritual impacts. Faith community nurses are in an optimal position to identify and intervene to help faith communities reduce the social isolation and loneliness among community-dwelling older adults. Risk factors and tools to identify both circumstances are discussed along with interventions and a case study.
