RESUMO

As one of the world's oldest occupations, nursing has seen, inspired, and innovated a host of changes. The evolution has been especially evident for the last 39 years. Since the 1980s, a growing focus on autonomy, research, and evidence-based practice has transformed nursing from a job to a profession. Concepts such as shared governance, interprofessional collaboration, and frontline engagement have transformed nurses from doctors' assistants to empowered and independent clinicians directly impacting patient outcomes and the healthcare environment. As the 30th anniversary of the American Nurses Credentialing Center comes to an end and the original Magnet® research celebrates a 39th birthday, we take a closer look at how the Magnet framework reflects these changes and how Magnet-designated organizations continue to advance nursing practice with innovation, knowledge, and leadership.

RESUMO

The use of health information technology (HIT) in acute care had an unexpected impact on nursing workflow. It often took a nurse extra steps or extra time to complete a process once documentation and medication administration was automated. In response to HIT problems, nurses developed workarounds. Research on workarounds has been hindered by a lack of variable definitions and research models. This paper presents results of a mixed methods study that proposes definitions for workarounds, associated variables and a multi-level model.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: In light of the increased research priorities set forth by both national and global funding sources, the goal of this project is to take a step towards deeper understanding of the responsibility of high-resource nurses conducting research in low-resource environments. A secondary goal is to understand the role of local collaboration partners in the development and implementation of research in their setting. DESIGN: A review of recent nursing research where the primary investigator was from a top-ranking U.S. university and the data collection took place in a low- or middle-income setting. METHODS: The literature was examined for two areas of interest: 1) the presence of local partners as authors, and 2) the role of local partners in development of the research question and study design. This review is through the lens of a collaborative work between an American nurse who conducted her doctoral research in sub-Saharan Africa and an African nurse who is a faculty member at a U.S. university. Ten nursing schools were reviewed for faculty involved in global health research. Ninety-nine faculty were reviewed for global interests and thirty-two were found to conduct research in low-resource settings. Inclusion criteria for publications: Authorship of nurse researcher; Data collection in an LMIC; Published between 2013 and 2019; Full-text available. EXCLUSION CRITERIA: Systematic or literature review. RESULTS: Of the abstracts reviewed (N = 248), 141 publications were excluded due to duplicates and research design, for a total of 107 articles included in this review. Seventy-nine percent of publications (N = 85) included local authors, while 84% (N = 90) included local ethical approval. Of publications with local authors, 53% did not state the role played, 27% stated local authors were involved in study conception, 40% stated local authors were involved in data collection/analysis, and 35% stated local authors reviewed/approved the final manuscript. CONCLUSIONS: More than half of published studies did not state the role of their local partners. Data collection/analysis are the major roles reported in the literature. To design more effective local studies and promote positive health outcomes, international partners should be involved in all stages of the research process, particularly study conception, and their roles acknowledged in all publications.

RESUMO

. The complexity of the nursing research in the primary health care: methodological challenges and suggestions. INTRODUCTION: Research in primary care nursing has grown in the last decades addressing the national and international call aimed at increasing the primary health care services. METHOD: A of the main possible challenges that researchers might encounter in primary care research is proposed, as well as suggestions aimed at implementing strong research methodologies. RESULTS: The study designs feasible in this setting such as that observational, randomized cluster and/or pragmatic trials, stepped wedge designs, and mixed-method studies are discussed; as well as strategies to involve the population, e.g., with participatory research; how to describe the interventions and the possible outcomes sensitive to the family/community nurses care to consider. CONCLUSIONS: National and international guidelines promote the implementation of the family/community nurses. Many Italian regions are implementing the model tailored to the context: these initiatives should be accompanied studies capable to document their outcomes.

RESUMO

This work organically integrates a systematic and individualized nursing plan with big data technology and applies it to the care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and respiratory failure (RF) and explores the continuous care model based on modern big data technologies to improve COPD and RF. It aims to relieve the symptoms of COPD and RF, reduce the number of acute episodes of COPD and RF and the number of hospitalizations, and improve the quality of life of patients. One hundred COPD and RF patients hospitalized in the respiratory medicine department of a tertiary hospital were selected and were categorized into control and experimental group. The nursing mode of the patients in the control group was the original telephone follow-up in the department, and the contents of the follow-up were determined according to the questions of the patients on the telephone at that time. Based on the original nursing in the department, the experimental group adopted individualized continual nursing plans based on the Internet and big data techniques for patients to conduct a pulmonary rehabilitation-related functional assessment, functional exercise guidance, and health guidance. Experimental results show that, compared with traditional continuous care, individualized continuous care combined with big data techniques can improve the lung function of patients with stable COPD and RF, reduce the number of acute COPD and RF attacks and the number of readmissions, and improve self-management ability and quality of life. The method can be applied and implemented in continuous nursing care.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To capture the extent and nature of intellectual disability nursing publications in Ireland. DESIGN: Scoping review using Arksey and O'Malley approach. DATA SOURCES: Six databases (PsycINFO, CINAHL, Medline, Academic Search Complete, Scopus, Embase) were searched along with a web-based search of the eight academic institutions delivering intellectual disability nurse education in Ireland for publications indexed from the earliest available date to the 31 December 2020. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Publications by an academic, practitioner or student working in intellectual disability practice or education in Ireland relating to intellectual disability nursing, care or education. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS: Data pertaining to type of paper/design, authors (academic/professional/student), year, collaboration (national/international), topic/content area and title were extracted from each paper. Data were analysed by two authors using Colorafi and Evans content analysis steps where data was tabulated, and a narrative synthesis undertaken. RESULTS: The reporting of the review is in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist. Database and web-based searching resulting 245 articles meeting the criteria for this review. Through content analysis the 245 articles were mapped onto six themes: supporting inclusion, future planning, aspects of health, interventions, education, professional development and research, and personal and professional accounts of caring. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlights the extent and nature of intellectual disability publications by academic, practitioner or student working in intellectual disability nursing in Ireland together with opportunities for future growth and development. From the findings it is apparent that there is an ongoing need for intellectual disability nurses to define their role across the full trajectory of health provision and to make visible their role in person-family centred support, inclusion, and contributions in health education, health promotion and health management.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The benefits of engaging undergraduate nursing students in research have been well-identified; however, little research has documented the long-term outcomes of this research assistant (RA) experience on nurses' professional careers. This study evaluated the impact of undergraduate research experience on participants' nursing professional career outcomes. METHOD: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted with a purposive sample of two groups (N = 94; RAs = 32 and non-RAs = 62). The questionnaire was administered online. RESULTS: A comparison of participants' responses revealed statistically significant differences regarding scholarship activities and attitudes toward evidence-based practice. RAs had a greater likelihood of involvement in professional development and higher educational aspirations than non-RAs. CONCLUSION: Undergraduate nursing research experience appears to have a positive impact on evidence-based practice, professional involvement, continuing education, and scholarship activities. These findings support future investment in undergraduate nursing research experiences to build a knowledge-based workforce and advanced nursing scholarship. [J Nurs Educ. 2021;60(10):570-576.].

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to present how metrics and dashboards, using the SMART model, are used to articulate the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) nurse researcher role. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: Following the SMART model, a dashboard was created highlighting measurable metrics for each of the 3 spheres of impact to align with the center's nursing strategic plan and initiatives, including Magnet redesignation. OUTCOME: Metrics reflecting the 3 spheres of impact and corresponding dashboard with successfully met outcomes are presented for the CNS nurse researcher. CONCLUSION: Metrics and dashboards are important tools that CNSs can use to capture their activities, set goals, and articulate their unique roles to both internal and external stakeholders. Dashboards, such as the one presented, are easily adaptable and can be updated on a regular basis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: With the development of evidence-based nursing practice, nursing research courses are important in undergraduate programs. However, nursing research courses are highly theoretical, which is difficult for students to understand. Improving the teaching quality of nursing research courses is a challenge for educators. OBJECTIVES: To understand the learning experience and the effect of gamification teaching on nursing undergraduates, and to provide new ideas for nurse educators. DESIGN: A qualitative research design using individual semi-structured interviews. SETTINGS: Gamification teaching was applied in an undergraduate nursing research course over one semester at a university in Central China. PARTICIPANTS: Purposive sampling was adopted to select nine undergraduate nursing students who had recently completed gamification teaching in a nursing research course. METHODS: Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method. RESULTS: Three major themes and seven subthemes emerged from the interviewees' experience: (1) positive attitude (e.g., acceptance with pleasure and flow experience); (2) self-perceived competence improvement (e.g., creative thinking, collaboration, and knowledge internalization and application); and (3) challenges of gamification teaching (e.g., learning pressure and rationality of game design). CONCLUSIONS: The gamification teaching mode based on the flow theory had a positive effect on the students' learning experience in the nursing research course. It is recommended to improve the game design model and to enhance its effectiveness for classrooms in the future.

RESUMO

Impulsivity is a central concept for many psychological models and interventions. Despite extensive research, the concept of impulsivity lacks clarity due to the diversity of definitions provided. The aims of this study were to conduct a concept analysis of impulsivity to provide a clear and workable definition of impulsivity for future nursing research. This study used Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis approach to analyze 37 articles from various disciplines. Our analysis offers promising direction in refining the concept. The findings can drive future research and enhance nurse researchers' ability to attend and explore health-related issues associated with the concept.
