Poetry is arguably the most creative expression of language and can evoke diverse subjective experiences, such as emotions and aesthetic responses, subsequently influencing the subjective judgment of the creativity of poem. This study investigated how certain personality traits-specifically openness, intellect, awe-proneness, and epistemic curiosity-influence the relationship between these subjective experiences and the creativity judgment of 36 English language poems. One hundred and twenty-nine participants rated each poem across six dimensions: clarity, aesthetic appeal, felt valence, felt arousal, surprise, and overall creativity. Initially, we obtained a parsimonious model that suggested aesthetic appeal, felt valence, and surprise as key predictors of poetic creativity. Subsequently, using multilevel analysis, we investigated the interactions between the four personality traits and these three predictors. Among the personality traits, openness emerged as the primary moderator in predicting judgments of poetic creativity, followed by curiosity and awe-proneness. Among the predictors, aesthetic appeal was moderated by all four personality traits, while surprise was moderated by openness, awe-proneness, and curiosity. Valence, on the other hand, was moderated by openness only. These findings provide novel insights into the ways individual differences influence evaluations of poetic creativity.

As a living being that was passed down the role of storytelling, I describe the conditions under which individuals find themselves. Science, and specifically public health research, affords me the opportunity to deploy my storytelling skills toward advocacy and intervention for communities that disproportionately bear the burden of poor health. Although neither role makes space for the emotional toll of this work. Neither allows me to rest long enough to move through the emotional mist of what it means to be perceived as a queer, Black, cisgender woman, and storytelling scientist in a stratified and hateful world where I am so much more. This poem pools from various worlds within me for each stanza. The poem seeks to reconcile for my whole self, and others who experience marginality, why our colleagues, countrypersons, and community members see it fit to perpetuate notions of human difference along racialized, socioeconomic, sexualized, gendered, able-bodied, and other stratified lines-to the detriment of our lives. How can my colleagues, countrypersons, and community members be willing to receive the privileges of a democratic society but discard the lives from which that society was built? How can my colleagues, countrypersons, and community members be willing to receive our science but discard our health? This poem brings together multidisciplinary discourse from the humanities and the social and biological sciences to state plainly what many others have academically. May this poem be paired with existing literature on the falsity of biologized race, reparations, and methodologies of reflexivity in science.To view the original version of this poem, see the Supplemental Material section of this article online.

The emergence of generative AI technologies has led to an increasing number of people collaborating with AI to produce creative works. Across two experimental studies, in which we carefully designed and programmed state-of-the-art human-AI interfaces, we examine how the design of generative AI systems influences human creativity (poetry writing). First, we find that people were most creative when writing a poem on their own, compared to first receiving a poem generated by an AI system and using sophisticated tools to edit it (Study 1). Following this, we demonstrate that this creativity deficit dissipates when people co-create with-not edit-AI and establish creative self-efficacy as an important mechanism in this process (Study 2). Thus, our findings indicate that people must occupy the role of a co-creator, not an editor, to reap the benefits of generative AI in the production of creative works.

From the perspective of a poet and first-year psychoanalytic training candidate, this paper develops Jeremy Safran's ideas about the dialectic between psychoanalysis and Buddhism by drawing an analogy between their processes and those of a poetry practice to define an alternative to pathological dissociation under capitalist systems of value. The paper details the writer's experience of working a day job in an office and the pathological dissociation which she subsequently attempts to overcome and critique through writing poetry. Various poems written at work are shared and analyzed as evidence. Drawing from Safran's edited volume, Psychoanalysis and Buddhism, the author then identifies aspects of Zen Buddhist meditation practice and the psychoanalytic process that focus on connecting with reality, however conflicted, as opposed to escaping it. This paper was written under the mentorship of the psychoanalyst and Zen teacher Barry Magid.

Ovid's Metamorphoses tells the story of Icarus - his tragic flight with man-made wings, the melting of the wax that bound them, and the ensuing fall to his death. This moment has been immortalized across the arts and through several mediums, but none are more notable than Bruegel's Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. Described as a "painter for poets," Bruegel's work served as inspiration for several writers, with this piece in particular providing the basis for ekphrastic poems by W.H. Auden and William Carlos Williams. Though each of these works has a different focus, the unifying theme is that human tragedy is too often placed on the periphery of notice. They are effective reminders to physicians and other healthcare providers about the human aspect of suffering and pain in medicine.

BACKGROUND: Charles Foix (1882-1927) may be mostly remembered today due to his contributions to vascular neurology and the syndromes that bear his name, such as the Foix-Alajouanine syndrome. However, he also developed a literary career and composed poetry and a vast collection of plays, often dealing with biblical themes or figures from Greek mythology. SUMMARY: His poetry was often inspired by his own experiences during the First World War, in which he was assigned to serve as a medical officer in Greece, becoming enamored with his surroundings and the classical lore. KEY MESSAGES: The authors explore Foix's poetry and drama and their relationship to his overall work as a neurologist, including his wartime experiences.

OBJECTIVE: To reflect on the importance of teaching formulation skills in psychiatry training and explore how creative writing, particularly writing poetry, can help achieve this goal. CONCLUSIONS: It is vital that formulation skills are embedded throughout psychiatry training. Formulations have an artistic element, and writing poetry can help foster a capacity for curiosity that can assist trainees in developing these skills.

This study aims to investigate women between the ages of 50 and 70 who write and perform spoken word poetry, through which they wish to lead positive social change, by turning the culture of silence into open discourse. This period represents a new phase of life. These women are at an "in-between" phase of being no longer young but not yet old and are between life roles. This is a new age group that has not yet been studied. We argue that this stage of life requires a new term. The term chosen for this study is advant-age because it implies the advantages and opportunities that this period of life affords. Although this group of women is growing in relation to the general population, the ageism and sexism they experience are increasing, creating a gradual process of social exclusion and reduction in their agency. Spoken Word Poetry (SWP) is written on a page but performed live in front of an audience. It is a poetic piece that includes rhythm, rhyme, and sometimes humor, which help convey complex messages with finesse. The importance of the current research lies in revealing a new and unresearched social phenomenon that has been developing in Israel in recent years: Advant-aged women are discussing issues that society usually silences, using methods that traditionally have been associated with younger groups. Through SWP, advant-aged women are enabling the possibility of raising these issues for public discussion and creating an opportunity for social change.

BACKGROUND: To date, there is little understanding of how caring during advanced cancer can be a transformational experience for personal becoming for family caregivers (FCGs). FCGs experience personal becoming as they create their own meaning of health and illness and choose patterns relating to the self-identity of the past while reaching forward into the unknowns. Gaining greater insight into a potentially positive aspect of cancer caregiving can contribute to FCG well-being and quality of life. OBJECTIVES: This article identifies I-Poems within cancer caregiver narratives and explores them for themes of personal becoming. The narrative environment created space for FCGs to construct and share their voices; at the same time, the analytic method of poetic inquiry provided the voice of the FCGs to be seen, heard, and contextually explored. METHODS: As a secondary analysis, we used five cancer caregiver narrative texts obtained from the primary study to create individual I-Poems. Each of the I-statements within the cancer caregiver narrative texts was lifted and repositioned into a poem format while retaining the chronological order and voice of the participant. We then explored the I-Poems for converging themes of personal becoming as emerged from the primary narrative-thematic analysis. RESULTS: I-Poems were created from each of the five participant caregivers' narratives and then explored for themes of personal becoming. Each of the participant stories is briefly introduced, followed by their I-Poem. We found that the I-Poems converged with emergent themes and provided a first-person representation of their caring journey and transformation of being. DISCUSSION: I-Poems are a postmodern form of poetic inquiry that can be used alongside thematic analysis to explore personal meaning of caring for someone with advanced cancer and how FCGs experience personal transformation of self. Although we found I-Poems to be a meaningful and useful form of analysis for some narrative data, we propose an evolved genre of poetic inquiry-We-Poems-to be used in dyadic nursing research and with FCGs who are in partnered relationships.

For the past four decades, biomedical science has transformed clinical outcomes for HIV and AIDS. However, the social, economic and gendered determinants of HIV remain largely intact. The social science and humanities offer concepts and methods for articulating why these remain intractable. I used poetic inquiry - an arts-based, qualitative approach - as I reviewed literature on the "end of AIDS, and post-AIDS". As I did so, I considered what contribution the social sciences and humanities could make in moving us closer to these ideals. Several themes and found poems emerged in this reading: (1) how language oversimplifies complex social realities; (2) the voices of people living with HIV and AIDS must be included; (3) HIV and AIDS intersects with social inequalities; (4) social and structural issues are no barrier to HIV prevention and (5) the need for radical interdisciplinarity. The paper concludes that the end of AIDS requires responses that are integrated, holistic and that radically challenge our silo'd disciplinary boundaries and frames. The social sciences and humanities are key to this charge.

Martinican poet, novelist and cultural theorist Édouard Glissant (1928-2011) rejected contemporary simplistic notions of creole hybridity popularised in the 1980s and 1990s in favour of a unique and explicitly antiessentialist construct of Caribbeanness-a form of being that embraces place while shunning any associated ideas of rootednesss. Throughout his work, there is a constant tension between the local and the global, the particular and the universal, the essentialist and the homogenising, a tension that is never resolved but used creatively to stake out an emergent third position against a backdrop of a metaphorical Caribbean seascape. The purpose of this article is to shed light on a central idea developed by Glissant: the importance of acknowledging opacity in the encounter with the Other, in contrast to idealised notions of transparency as inherently desirable. This 'right to opacity' has been embraced in poststructural theory, postcolonial activism and contemporary art. However, I argue that opacity is also a highly relevant notion in clinical contexts, as an essential resource for understanding concepts such as first-person, second-person and third-person perspectives in the phenomenology of mental health and illness. For illustration, I point to a number of clinical tools and approaches-such as the Cultural Formulation Interview, Therapeutic Assessment and the employment of a not-knowing stance in mentalisation-based treatment-that successfully incorporate a respect for opacity as a core value in the clinician-patient encounter. This article is not an attempt to offer a definitive how-to guide on how to make use of the ideas of Édouard Glissant in the clinic; instead, I hope to inspire further discussion about how various notions of opacity and transparency come into play for mental health practitioners and how acknowledging alterity and difference may contribute to more fruitful and respectful ways of engaging with the patient-as-Other.
