Left atrial appendage (LAA) closure can prevent stroke in high-risk patients with atrial fibrillation.A bioabsorbable LAA occluder made of degradable polymer materials, such as polydioxanone (PDO) and poly-L-lactic acid (PLA), and nitinol wire was used. Occluders were successfully implanted in 18 Chinese rural dogs, 2 of which died within 48 hours after operation due to pericardial tamponade and hemorrhage, respectively. Follow-up observation was performed after transcatheter LAA closure. New tissue was found on the surface of the occluder 2 months after operation. No adjacent structures such as the mitral valve and the left superior pulmonary vein were affected by the occluder discs. Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining was performed at 3 months after operation, which showed intact intimal structure on the occluder surface, and unabsorbed PDO and PLA were observed. Scanning electron microscopy showed irregular arrangement of endothelial cells. New endothelial tissue was observed to completely cover the occluder at 6 months after operation. Most PDOs were replaced by fibrous connective tissue, and scanning electron microscopy showed regularly arranged endothelial cells. Pathological examination at 12 months showed only a small remnant of PDO. The gross specimens of the liver, spleen, and kidneys and pathological examination did not indicate thromboembolism.The bioabsorbable LAA occluder made of PDO, PLA, and nitinol wire was safe and effective for the occlusion of LAA in dogs. The surface of the occluder was endothelialized half a year after operation. The absorbable materials of the occluder were degraded after 1 year.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate, in vitro, the load and type of failure of the sutured ventral abdominal fascia of cats with different sizes of suture material made of polydioxanone (PDX) (2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 USP). METHODS: A total of 32 samples of the ventral abdominal wall from 16 cadaveric cats were harvested using an hourglass-shaped template. The samples were sectioned longitudinally along the linea alba and then sutured together in a continuous pattern using four different randomly assigned sizes of pdx suture material (2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0 USP). A universal testing machine was used for linear distraction of the samples. The tensile strength and type of failure were recorded and analysed. Three types of failure were defined: suture material failure (S), suture line failure (T1) and failure of the abdominal wall further away from the linea alba (T2). RESULTS: The frequency of suture material failure decreased with increasing suture size. Suture size 5-0 failed due to a S failure in 6/8 samples, PDX 4-0 failed in 2/8 samples and PDX 3-0 failed in only 1/8 samples. However, PDX 2-0 failed due to only T1 or T2 failures, with both failures being almost equally represented. No statistically significant differences in the load to failure between PDX 2-0, 3-0 and 4-0 were noted (P >0.05). The risk of suture failure increased with decreasing suture size diameter. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: PDX 2-0 and 3-0 can be used without reservation for the closure of ventral midline coeliotomy in cats. Although there was no statistically significant difference between PDX 2-0, 3-0 and 4-0, PDX 4-0 showed a higher probability for suture breakage and should be used only after careful consideration of the patient while clinical evaluation is pending. Pdx 5-0 cannot be recommended as a safe suture size for this type of surgical closure.

Purpose: The primary objective of the conducted research was to develop an urological stent design for the treatment of male ure-thral stenosis. Given the variable loading conditions inside the urethra, the proposed stent should maintain normal tissue kinetics and obstruct the narrowed lumen. The suitable selection for the stent material significantly influences the regeneration and proper remodeling of the urethral tissues. Methods: In this work, the mechanical characteristics of some polymer materials were studied, including: polydi-oxanone (PDO) and poly(L-lactide) (PLLA)/polycaprolactone (PCL) composite. The obtained mechanical properties for static tensile testing of the materials, allowed the determination of such parameters as Young's modulus (E), tensile strength (R m) and yield strength (R e). Subsequently, the design of a urological stent was developed, for which a numerical analysis was carried out to check the behaviour of the stent during varying loads prevailing in the urethra. Result: The research indicated that PDO has better mechanical properties than the proposed PLLA/PCL composite. The numerical analysis results suggested that the developed stent design can be successfully used in the treatment of male urethral stenosis. The obtained stress and strain distributions in the numerical analysis confirm that the PDO material can be used as a material for an urological stent. Conclusions: The biodegradable polymers can be successfully used in urology. Their advantages over solid materials are their physicochemical properties, the ability to manipulate the rate and time of degradation and the easy availability of materials and manufacturing technology.

The appropriate degradation characteristics of polydioxanone (PDO) are necessary for the safety and effectiveness of stents. This study aimed to investigate the degradation of PDO weaving tracheal stents (PW stents)in vitroandin vivo. The degradation solution ofS. aureus(SAU),E. coli(ECO),P. aeruginosa(PAE), and control (N) were prepared, and the PW stents were immersed for 12 weeks. Then, the radial support force, weight retention, pH, molecular structure, thermal performance, and morphology were determined. Furthermore, the PW stents were implanted into the abdominal cavity of rabbits, and omentum was embedded. At feeding for 16 weeks, the mechanical properties, and morphology were measured. During the first 8 weeks, the radial support force in all groups was progressively decreased. At week 2, the decline rate of radial support force in the experimental groups was significantly faster compared to the N group, and the difference was narrowed thereafter. The infrared spectrum showed that during the whole degradation process, SAU, ECO and PAE solution did not lead to the formation of new functional groups in PW stents.In vitroscanning electron microscope observation showed that SAU and ECO were more likely to gather and multiply at the weaving points of the PW stents, forming colonies.In vivoexperiments showed that the degradation in the concavity of weaving points of PW stents was more rapid and severe. The radial support loss rate reached more than 70% at week 4, and the radial support force was no longer measurable after week 8. In omentum, multinuclear giant cells and foreign giant cells were found to infiltrate. PW stents have good biocompatibility. The degradation rate of PW stents in the aseptic conditionsin vivowas faster than in the bacteriological environmentin vitro.

Immediate implant placement in the anterior maxilla remains complex, particularly when the labial cortical plate of the socket is deficient and there is an associated class IV ridge defect with both hard- and soft-tissue deficiencies. This case report describes a novel combination of polydioxanone (PDS) suture tenting to support a synthetic bone graft with simultaneous implant placement with implants featuring a body-shift design and subcrestal internal angle correction. In addition, the implants were immediately loaded with a four-unit provisional bridge at the time of surgery, thus reducing morbidity, costs, and total treatment time.

BACKGROUND: For abdominal fascial closure, the choice of optimal suture material and appropriate suture technique are of paramount importance to prevent the incidence of incisional hernia. Although barbed sutures are widely used in various surgical fields, their safety and feasibility on abdominal fascial closure which requires the most tensile strength for security have not been established yet. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, single-arm, interventional clinical trial to present the postoperative outcomes of using barbed sutures in abdominal fascial closure between April 2021 and August 2021. Patients with colorectal cancer who underwent minimally invasive surgery in elective setting were included. For all participants, monofilament polydioxanone barbed suture, MONOFIX®, was used to secure the abdominal fasica. The primary outcome was the 1-year incidence of incisional hernia assessed by computed tomography. RESULTS: A total of 30 patients were included. The median fascial incision length and suture length were 6.5 cm (range, 6-7.5 cm) and 31 cm (range, 27.5-39.0 cm), respectively. The median procedure time of abdominal fascial closure was 4 min (range, 3-9 min). There was no incidence of unexpected event related to suturing including suture cutting, stopper separation from threads, and suture loosening. One case of superficial surgical site infection occurred during postoperative hospital stays. There was no fascial dehiscence, incisional hernia, and adhesive ileus during a median follow-up period of 17.5 months. CONCLUSION: Monofilament polydioxanone barbed suture, MONOFIX®, may be used safely and effectively on abdominal fascial closure. GOV NUMBER: NCT05872334.

The combination of polydioxanone (PDO) threads with other technologies has garnered significant interest for rejuvenation purposes. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has the potential to improve patient comfort and recovery after minimally invasive rejuvenation protocols and also contribute to the overall efficacy of these procedures, fostering an integrative approach to cutaneous rejuvenation. The objective os this work was to investigate concurrent application of PDO threads and red LED PBM on glabellar static wrinkles, in a parallel randomized sham-controlled trial. Forty individuals with Glogau aging classification levels 3 and 4, static glabellar wrinkles, and no significant comorbidities received PDO threads applied along glabellar line. Effective PBM group received 1.35 J and 630 nm red LED light punctually along threads, twice weekly for nine sessions over 30 days. The outcome measures were swelling assessment, dermal thickness and PDO thread degradation via linear ultrasound. No swelling was detected 24 h post-PDO thread application, hindering PBM effect assessment. PDO threads induced dermal thickening; no added effect with PBM. No significant difference in thread hydrolysis between groups, though some ultrasound records inconclusive on thread presence. The absence of swelling may stem from various factors, including the timing of post-procedure swelling assessment, operator proficiency in thread application, and procedural characteristics. No evidence supports the notion that PBM augments dermal thickening, however other light parameters should be studied. Insufficient data to demonstrate PBM's effectiveness in controlling post-procedure swelling. Combination of PBM with PDO thread application doesn't enhance dermal thickening, nor accelerate thread degradation at the parameters used here.

BACKGROUND: Anti-aging in the lower eyelid-cheek junction area has always been the most widely sought cosmetic surgery. However, orbital fat removal or a midcheek fat pad lift alone does not achieve the best results. This study describes a new technique of lower blepharoplasty combined with a midcheek lift performed using a polydioxanone barbed suture loop based on the entire anatomy of the lower eyelid-cheek junction area. METHODS: We report our experience with lower blepharoplasty combined with a midcheek lift, covering 38 procedures performed over the past 3 years. We reviewed the technique and results and described the various indications for which the new technique is suitable. The efficacy of the surgeries was delineated using both 3D volume calculation and graphic pictures. RESULTS: All patients demonstrated significant rejuvenation of the lower eyelid with the elimination of the eyebags, elevation of the lid-cheek junction, and improvement of the nasolabial folds. All the patients were satisfied with the procedure. Complication rates were low, and lower lid retraction temporarily occurred in 3% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: This new method of lower blepharoplasty with midcheek elevation is safe, effective, convenient, and long-lasting. The technique is more doctor-friendly, recovery is quick, and complications are minimized. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE IV: This journal requires that authors assign a level of evidence to each article. BACKGROUND: Biodegradable (BD) stents made from polydioxanone have been used only in human airways. These stents combine the advantages of classical tracheal stents, and fewer side effects are expected due to their biocompatibility and their time-limited presence in airways. However, new clinical consequences have arisen. Here, the authors share their experiences with BD stents for tracheal indications, focusing on their safety and efficacy. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of a collected database of adult patients who underwent implantation of biodegradable tracheal stents between September 2013 and December 2022 at the Department of Respiratory Medicine of the 1st Faculty of Medicine in Prague and Thomayer University Hospital. The indications included functionally significant nonmalignant tracheal stenosis and tracheomalacia. Self-expandable, biodegradable, polydioxanone tracheal stents manufactured by ELLA-CS Ltd. (Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic) were implanted during rigid bronchoscopy under general anaesthesia. All patients were followed up in the department and were provided with the necessary care. The main efficacy and safety parameters and relationships were analysed using descriptive statistics and Fisher´s exact, Wilcoxon and KruskalâWallis tests. RESULTS: A total of 65 stents were implanted in 47 adult patients. During the first two months after implantation, when adequate function was expected, the stent was found to be effective in 26 out of 39 patients who completed this period (66.7%). The clinical effectiveness reached 89.7%, as early restenoses were mostly mild and necessitated treatment in only 4 patients. The frequencies of significant mucostasis, migration and granulation tissue growth were 2.6%, 7.5% and 23.1%, respectively, during this period. Thirty-four participants completed the half-year follow-up period after the first or second stent insertion, and some were followed up beyond this period. Poor control of symptoms, the development of restenosis and the need for interventions were characteristic of this period as the stents degraded. Twenty-two patients who experienced remodelling or stabilization of the tracheal lumen achieved a stent-free state. Seven patients underwent subsequent surgical treatment. CONCLUSIONS: BD stents are safe and provide adequate tracheal support until they begin to degrade. The use of BD stents necessitates close monitoring of patients and accurate treatment of possible restenosis. Wound healing following skin tumour surgery still remains a major challenge. To address this issue, polysaccharide-loaded nanofibrous mats have been engineered as skin patches on the wound site to improve wound healing while simultaneously eliminating residual cancer cells which may cause cancer relapse. The marine derived polysaccharides kappa-carrageenan (KCG) and fucoidan (FUC) were blended with polydioxanone (PDX) nanofibers due to their inherent anti-cancer activity conferred by the sulphate groups as well as their immunomodulatory properties which can reduce inflammation resulting in accelerated wound healing. KCG and FUC were released sustainably from the blend nanofibers via the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetics. MTT assays, live/dead staining and SEM images demonstrated the toxicity of KCG and FUC towards skin cancer MP 41 cells. In addition, MP 41 cells showed reduced metastatic potential when grown on KCG or FUC containing mats. Both KCG and FUC were non- cytotoxic to healthy L 929 fibroblast cells. In vivo studies on healthy Wistar rats confirmed the non-toxicity of the nanofibrous patches as well as their improved and scarless wound healing potential. In vivo studies on tumour xenograft model further showed a reduction of 7.15 % in tumour volume in only 4 days following application of the transdermal patch.

OBJECTIVE: Safe, effective, and biocompatible minimally invasive procedures with the potential to stimulate collagen production have been made to recover dermal thickness and skin quality. The main of this animal model experiment was to observe the effect of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and polydioxanone (PDO) biostimulators in collagen I and III after hypodermal injection. METHODOLOGY: Sixteen adult female rats (Wistar) were randomized into four groups and had dorsal treatment with: G1: hypodermic subcision (HS) only; G2: HS and PLLA hypodermic injection (HI), G3: HS and PDO HI; G4: Control, with no treatment. RESULTS: In histochemical, it was observed hypodermal and dermal tissue in more organized thickness in G3 and in G4 when compared to G1 and G2. There was few difference in G1 compared to G4. The tissue of G2 showed irregularities in the arrangement of collagen fibers, less defined structure and lower distribution of type I collagen compared to the other groups. There is a greater tendency for the proportions of type III collagen among tissues treated with both biostimulators (G2 and G3). PLLA and PDO had relatively similar percentages of collagen when compared to G4. The amount of type I collagen was higher in tissues treated with subcision, while type III collagen was higher in tissues treated with both biostimulators. CONCLUSION: G3 showed better performance in collagen production, although small, when compared with G2.

INTRODUCTION: Emergent laparotomy is associated with significant wound complications including surgical site infections (SSIs) and fascial dehiscence. Triclosan-coated barbed (TCB) suture for fascial closure has been shown to reduce local complications but primarily in elective settings. We sought to evaluate the effect of TCB emergency laparotomy fascial closure on major wound complications. METHODS: Adult patients undergoing emergency laparotomy were prospectively evaluated over 1 year. Patients were grouped into TCB versus polydioxanone (PDS) for fascial closure. Subanalysis was performed on patients undergoing single-stage laparotomy. Primary outcomes were SSI and fascial dehiscence. Multivariate analysis identified independent factors associated with SSI and fascial dehiscence. RESULTS: Of the 206 laparotomies, 73 (35%) were closed with TCB, and 133 (65%) were closed with PDS. Trauma was the reason for laparotomy in 73% of cases; damage-control laparotomy was performed in 27% of cases. The overall rate of SSI and fascial dehiscence was 18% and 10%, respectively. Operative strategy was similar between groups, including damage-control laparotomy, wound vac use, skin closure, and blood products. Surgical site infection events trended lower with TCB versus PDS closure (11% vs. 21%, p = 0.07), and fascial dehiscence was significantly lower with TCB versus PDS (4% vs. 14%, p < 0.05). Subanalysis of trauma and nontrauma cases showed no difference in SSI or fascial dehiscence. Multivariable analysis found that TCB decreased the likelihood of fascial dehiscence (odds ratio, 0.07; p < 0.05) following emergency laparotomy. Increased odds of fascial dehiscence were seen in damage-control laparotomy (odds ratio, 3.1; p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Emergency laparotomy fascial closure with TCB showed significantly decreased rates of fascial dehiscence compared with closure with PDS and a strong trend toward lower SSI events. Triclosan-coated barbed suture was independently associated with decreased fascial dehiscence rates after emergency laparotomy. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic/Care Management; Level III.

INTRODUCTION: The advances of self-crossing hyaluronic acid (SC-HA) fillers combination use with polydioxanone thread in minipigs were examined for compatibility, effectiveness, and immune response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 12-week experiment was conducted using 6 minipigs (3 male and 3 female each) to evaluate the effects of SC-HA filler. The molecular weight of SC-HA filler was fixed at 200 kDa and alternative storage modulus of G80, G250, and G500 were examined. The procedure involved injecting SC-HA filler and polydioxanone threads into the skin tissue of anesthetized minipigs, and tissue sampling after 1 month (three minipigs), and 3 months (three minipigs) for histological staining and analysis. The immune reaction was observed during the experiment. RESULTS: The practitioner reported it was easy to inject the SC-HA filler in combination with polydioxanone threads. All four storage modulus of SC-HA fillers were injectable within the polydioxanone thread containing cannula. Also, during the procedure, there were no immune responses at the treated sites. The results of the histological tissue examination confirmed that there was no chemical interaction between SC-HA filler and the existing polydioxanone thread, and it was observed that SC-HA filler was more uniformly distributed within the tissue with lower storage modulus, resulting in a higher production of collagen in the surrounding filler. When combined with scaffold polydioxanone thread, the scaffold polydioxanone thread helped spread the filler evenly, resulting in a more evenly distributed collagen around the filler. CONCLUSION: Today, the combination therapy of filler and polydioxanone thread in one procedure is challenging due to the high viscosity of conventional fillers. However, this study confirmed that combination therapy of filler and polydioxanone thread is possible with SC-HA fillers. Additionally, it was found that polydioxanone thread does not seem to interfere with the crosslinking reaction of SC-HA filler, and if used with a higher pH of polydioxanone, it may enhance the cross-linking reaction and achieve a higher viscosity value. Finally, the study resulted in the idea of concrete as SC-HA filler and reinforcing rod for polydioxanone thread.

In this study, we introduce electrospun polydioxanone (PDO) nonwoven fabrics as a platform for the delivery of adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors for transduction and genome editing by adhering them to organ surfaces, including the heart. AAV vectors were loaded onto the PDO fabrics by soaking the fabrics in a solution containing AAV vectors. In vitro, the amount of AAV vectors loaded onto the fabrics could be adjusted by changing their concentration in the solution, and the number of cells expressing the green fluorescent protein (GFP) encoded by the AAV vectors increased in correlation with the increasing amount of loaded AAV vectors. In vivo, both transduction and genome editing resulted in the observation of GFP expression around AAV vector-loaded PDO fabrics attached to the surfaces of mouse hearts, indicating effective transduction and expression at the target site. These results demonstrate the great potential of electrospun PDO nonwoven fabrics carrying therapeutic AAV vectors for gene therapy.

PURPOSE: We assessed clinical outcomes of patients undergoing open hernia repair using STRATAFIX™ Symmetric, a barbed triclosan-coated suture (TCS; Ethicon), versus conventional polydioxanone suture (PDS) for abdominal wall closure. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study identified patients undergoing hernia repair. The site used PDS from 2013 to 2016 and switched exclusively to barbed TCS in 2017. Outcomes were assessed at 30, 60, and 90 days. Multivariate regression analyses and Cox proportional hazards models were used. RESULTS: Of 821 hernia repairs, 446 used barbed TCS and 375 used conventional PDS. Surgical site infections (SSIs) were significantly less frequent with barbed TCS (60 days, 5.9% vs. 11.4%; P = 0.0083; 90 days, 5.9% vs. 11.7%; P = 0.006) and this remained consistent after multivariate adjustment (60 days, OR [95% CI]: 0.5 [0.3-0.9]; 90 days, 0.5 [0.3-0.9]). Among patients with SSI, deep SSIs were less frequent with barbed TCS (60 days, 9.1% vs. 35.7%; P = 0.022; 90 days, 9.1% vs. 34.9%; P = 0.0252). Barbed TCS significantly reduced the risk of perioperative complications (HR [95% CI]: 0.5[0.3-0.8]; P = 0.0058). Hospital length of stay was 2.5 days shorter with barbed TCS (mean [95% CI]: 5.7[4.9-6.6] vs. 8.2[7.3-9.1] days; P < 0.0001). No differences in reoperation rate over time were observed by type of suture (HR[95% CI]:1.3 [0.5-3.4]; P = 0.4793). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that patients who underwent open hernia repair appeared to recover equally well regardless of the suture type. In addition, the use of barbed TCS was associated with significantly reduced risk of perioperative complications and hospital length of stay.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of horizontal neck lines as a cosmetic concern is widely acknowledged, yet the available treatment options are limited, and no studies have investigated the use of polydioxanone-barbed threads. These threads, characterized by a finely braided structure, function as a scaffold to attract regenerative factors and facilitate the migration and proliferation of cells. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of concurrent application of braided polydioxanone-barbed threads for addressing horizontal neck wrinkles. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective case series involving four female participants (aged 41, 43, 45, and 46) treated with polydioxanone-barbed threads for horizontal neck wrinkles between January 2023 and July 2023 was conducted. Adult patients were assessed at an 8-week follow-up, revealing a significant reduction in wrinkle intensity based on the Horizontal Neck Wrinkle Severity Scale. RESULTS: The analysis of horizontal neck lines demonstrated a notable decrease in wrinkle intensity according to the Horizontal Neck Wrinkle Severity Scale at the 8-week mark, and this improvement maintained statistical significance. Both patient Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) scores (90%-100%) and physician GAIS scores (100%) were rated as excellent. CONCLUSION: The subdermal application of polydioxanone-barbed threads for horizontal neck lines proves to be a secure and efficacious approach for treating horizontal neck wrinkles, with no observed Tyndall effect. This technique shows promise for rejuvenating the skin in the horizontal neckline region.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the biologic impact of polydioxanone (PDO) stenting in an animal model of inflammatory tracheal stenosis (TS). Additionally, to compare these results with those obtained in the same model without a stent and after placing one PDO stent in a healthy trachea. METHODS: 40 adult NZ rabbits were distributed into 3 groups: Group A, 8 animals with a healthy trachea and a PDO stent; group B, 17 rabbits with a TS and no stent; and group C, 15 animals with TS and a PDO stent. Histopathological studies included Masson's trichrome staining for submucosal fibrosis and Safranin O to assess structural integrity of cartilage. Morphometric analyses were performed in the 3 groups. RESULTS: Stent placement was successful in every case. Histological studies did not show a significant increase in tracheal wall collagen area and cartilage structure was not modified in those rabbits with a PDO stent, even in a TS scenario. Stent implantation permitted recovery of normal tracheal lumen levels in the TS model. CONCLUSIONS: PDO stenting in the normal trachea and in a model of TS neither caused increase in the collagen matrix nor modification of the cartilaginous support. Additionally, radial force exhibited by PDO stents was effective in restoring normal tracheal lumen when placed in a stenotic lesion. These findings suggest that they may be safe and useful in the setting of an acquired TS.

PURPOSE: To systematically reviews the safety and effectiveness of alloplastic implants (AI) in septoplasty. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search in Medline, EMBASE, SCOPUS, CINAHL, and Cochrane Library databases to identify articles on septoplasty using AI. We also manually searched reference lists of included articles. Inclusion criteria involved prospective or retrospective case-series studies of adults with deviated nasal septum (DNS) who underwent septoplasty with AI, with sufficient follow-up data. Two authors independently screened articles, reviewed full manuscripts, and extracted data. RESULTS: Out of 5370 articles, 16 met inclusion criteria, encompassing 884 patients from 14 eligible studies. Most studies had fair quality. AI materials included Polydioxanone (PDS), Polycaprolactone (PCL), Titanium, Macropore, and PolyMax. AI usage improved nasal obstruction in most patients, with 95.6 % (84.8 %-100 %) based on physical examination and 96.9 % (89.6 %-100 %) based on symptoms. AI-related complications occurred in 4.3 % (0 %-12.8 %) of cases, mostly non-serious. CONCLUSIONS: AI use can be considered as a useful adjunct in septoplasty, with uncommon complications similar to standard procedures. However, due to limited-quality evidence, further prospective controlled studies are needed.

BACKGROUND: Traditional facial aging surgeries have risks and extended recovery times, leading to a demand for minimally invasive alternatives. PDO (polydioxanone) threads, which are absorbable sutures that stimulate collagen production and tissue contraction, offer improved aesthetic outcomes. This paper evaluates the combined use of PDO thread mid-cheek lift and lower blepharoplasty for facial rejuvenation. METHODS: This retrospective study compared outcomes in patients undergoing lower blepharoplasty combined with a mid-face lift using PDO threads versus those undergoing only lower blepharoplasty. Focused on individuals with baggy lower eyelids and pronounced nasolabial folds, outcome measures included the Modified Fitzpatrick wrinkle scale, Allergan® midface volume deficit scale, Width of inter zygomatic distance, Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale, and patient satisfaction questionnaires, assessed at baseline, 3 months, and 1 year postoperatively. RESULTS: The combined procedure demonstrated superior aesthetic outcomes and higher patient satisfaction compared to lower blepharoplasty alone. Improvements were more significant in wrinkle reduction, midface volume, and inter-zygomatic distance in the combined procedure group. Although the combined procedure had a longer mean operation time, scar assessment scores were similar between both groups, with no complications reported. CONCLUSION: The combination of lower blepharoplasty and mid-face lift using PDO threads is a comprehensive and effective approach for facial rejuvenation. It significantly enhances wrinkle reduction, mid-face lifting, and patient satisfaction. Ultrasound-guided thread lifting, a method of assessing and performing mid-face lifting, proves to be safe and efficient. This approach holds promise as a future option in cosmetic anti-aging surgery, presenting a minimally invasive alternative with natural-looking results and reduced downtime. BACKGROUND: Using a thread for wound closure promotes healing and minimizes contamination by foreign substances. Threads have also been employed in esthetic surgery; however, functional threads that can improve wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin are required. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the suitability of polydioxanone threads coated with polyethylene glycol, hyaluronic acid, and amino acids for use in the medical field because such formulations are expected to promote regeneration and collagen synthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Physical properties (diameter [ n = 20], tensile strength [ n = 20], strength retention rate [ n = 10], and scanning electron microscopy images) and cytotoxicity (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide and lactate dehydrogenase assays) of polydioxanone threads coated with polyethylene glycol, hyaluronic acid, and amino acids were assessed and compared with those of uncoated polydioxanone threads. Analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics (Statistical significance; p values <.05). RESULTS: The size standards for tensile strength (≥63.5 N) and diameter (average 0.570-0.610 mm) were met. There were no differences in the physical properties of the coated and uncoated threads; however, the biocompatibility of coated threads was high owing to low cytotoxicity. CONCLUSION: Threads coated with materials that can promote regeneration are suitable for use in the medical field.
