OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and nature of cost conversations occurring during veterinarian-client-patient interactions within companion animal practice. SAMPLES: 60 randomly selected, practicing veterinarians working in 55 practices across southern Ontario, Canada, and 909 of their clients, sampled by convenience. PROCEDURES: A cross-sectional descriptive study including 917 video-recorded appointments. Associations between veterinarian, client, or appointment-level factors and occurrence of a cost conversation were evaluated using multi-level logistic regression. RESULTS: 215 of 917 (23.4%) videos included a discussion of cost between the veterinarian and client. Cost conversations involving veterinarians primarily focused on conveying the price in relation to the time or service being offered (74.0% [159/215]), whereas the benefit to the future health and wellness of the patient was conveyed in 14.4% (31/215) of veterinarians' cost conversations. Costs were most frequently discussed by veterinarians in relation to diagnostic testing (44.2% [96/215]). The odds of a cost discussion occurring were greater during problem appointments versus wellness (P = .011) or recheck (P = .029) appointments, for feline versus canine patients (P = .037), as appointment duration increased (P < .001), and as a client's number of visits in the past year decreased (P = .049). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Discussing cost of care in veterinary practice continues to be relatively uncommon. Opportunities exist for veterinary professionals to frame their communication of the cost of veterinary care in relation to the benefits offered to the future health and wellbeing of the veterinary patient.

RESUMO

Facial expressions are divided into micro- and macro-expressions. Micro-expressions are low-intensity emotions presented for a short moment of about 0.25 s, whereas macro-expressions last up to 4 s. To derive micro-expressions, participants are asked to suppress their emotions as much as possible while watching emotion-inducing videos. However, it is a challenging process, and the number of samples collected tends to be less than those of macro-expressions. Because training models with insufficient data may lead to decreased performance, this study proposes two ways to solve the problem of insufficient data for micro-expression training. The first method involves N-step pre-training, which performs multiple transfer learning from action recognition datasets to those in the facial domain. Second, we propose Décalcomanie data augmentation, which is based on facial symmetry, to create a composite image by cutting and pasting both faces around their center lines. The results show that the proposed methods can successfully overcome the data shortage problem and achieve high performance.

The purpose of this study was to compare swing time and golf club angle parameters during golf swings using three, two dimensional (2D) low cost, Augmented-Video-based-Portable-Systems (AVPS) (Kinovea, SiliconCoach Pro, SiliconCoach Live). Twelve right-handed golfers performed three golf swings whilst being recorded by a high-speed 2D video camera. Footage was then analysed using AVPS-software and the results compared using both descriptive and inferential statistics. There were no significant differences for swing time and the golf phase measurements between the 2D and 3D software comparisons. In general, the results showed a high Intra class Correlation Coefficient (ICC > 0.929) and Cronbach's Coefficient Alpha (CCA > 0.924) reliability for both the kinematic and temporal parameters. The inter-rater reliability test for the swing time and kinematic golf phase measurements on average were strong. Irrespective of the AVPS software investigated, the cost effective AVPS can produce reliable output measures that benefit golf analyses.

RESUMO

360° video camera sensing is an increasingly popular technology. Compared with traditional 2D video systems, it is challenging to ensure the viewing experience in 360° video camera sensing because the massive omnidirectional data introduce adverse effects on start-up delay, event-to-eye delay, and frame rate. Therefore, understanding the time consumption of computing tasks in 360° video camera sensing becomes the prerequisite to improving the system's delay performance and viewing experience. Despite the prior measurement studies on 360° video systems, none of them delves into the system pipeline and dissects the latency at the task level. In this paper, we perform the first in-depth measurement study of task-level time consumption for 360° video camera sensing. We start with identifying the subtle relationship between the three delay metrics and the time consumption breakdown across the system computing task. Next, we develop an open research prototype Zeus to characterize this relationship in various realistic usage scenarios. Our measurement of task-level time consumption demonstrates the importance of the camera CPU-GPU transfer and the server initialization, as well as the negligible effect of 360° video stitching on the delay metrics. Finally, we compare Zeus with a commercial system to validate that our results are representative and can be used to improve today's 360° video camera sensing systems.

This study used a 2 × 2 experimental design to explore the effects of message type (non-narrative vs. narrative information) and social media metrics (high vs. low numbers of plays) of low-carbon-themed social media short videos on people's willingness to protect the environment. Subjects completed questionnaires after viewing short videos that contained different message types and social media metrics, and a final sample of 295 cases was included in the data analysis. The study found that, while the type of information (i.e., non-narrative or narrative) of the low-carbon-themed social media short videos had no direct effect on people's willingness to protect the environment, its indirect effects were significant. These indirect effects were achieved through immersion experience and social influence. Subjects who watched narrative videos had a higher level of immersion experience, which in turn was significantly and positively correlated with environmental intention; meanwhile, those who watched non-narrative videos experienced a higher level of social influence, which in turn was significantly and positively correlated with environmental intention. In addition, subjects who viewed high-volume videos experienced a more positive effect on their willingness to protect the environment. This study explored how message design could promote subjects' perceptions and positive attitudes towards environmental protection, with important managerial implications.

Video cameras are finding increasing use in the study and analysis of bird flight over short ranges. However, reconstruction of flight trajectories in three dimensions typically requires the use of multiple cameras and elaborate calibration procedures. We present an alternative approach that uses a single video camera and a simple calibration procedure for the reconstruction of such trajectories. The technique combines prior knowledge of the wingspan of the bird with a camera calibration procedure that needs to be used only once in the lifetime of the system. The system delivers the exact 3D coordinates of the position of the bird at the time of every full wing extension and uses interpolated height estimates to compute the 3D positions of the bird in the video frames between successive wing extensions. The system is inexpensive, compact and portable, and can be easily deployed in the laboratory as well as the field.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis is a very common chronic condition that affects nearly one-quarter of the adult population worldwide. The optimal management of allergic rhinitis includes useful information on several aspects of the condition. Social media and online platforms are increasingly being used to obtain health-related information. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to evaluate and evaluate the popularity and usefulness of YouTube videos on allergic rhinitis. METHODS: Out of 225 screened videos, 86 met the inclusion criteria. A scoring scheme was designed to evaluate and rate the content of the extracted data. Data on views, likes, dislikes, and comments were extracted, and data on the source of uploader, duration, and content quality were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 43% of the videos were classified as useful, 36% as misleading, and 21% as neither useful nor misleading. Although professional health care providers uploaded two-thirds of the videos, they accounted for only 24.4% of the total videos. Videos uploaded by television shows and YouTube channels had by far the most user interaction, accounting for 66.9% of the total likes, 66.8% of the total dislikes, and 54.0% of the total comments. This source alone accounted for 23.4% of the total views, but for 48% of the total misleading videos. CONCLUSION: The usefulness of YouTube videos on allergic rhinitis is varying and less than half of the videos provided useful information. If the proper conditions are met, selected YouTube videos on allergic rhinitis can be used as a source of information for patient education.

BACKGROUND: To analyze the content, reliability, and quality of relevant TikTok videos regarding orthodontic retention. METHODS: Six relevant terms were searched on the TikTok social media Web site. Uploaded videos satisfying inclusion/exclusion criteria were assessed for the presence of nine predetermined content domains and categorized as "high-content" (≥5) or "low-content" (<5). Reliability was determined using the DISCERN instrument and quality by the Global Quality Score (GQS). Layperson videos were evaluated for themes using discourse analysis. Intraclass coefficients for content, DISCERN scores, and GQS were calculated for intrarater reliability. Statistical analysis was via IBM SPSS Statistics (version 27.0.0.0; SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL). RESULTS: Orthodontists uploaded 37.8% and laypersons 34% of the 209 assessed videos. Just 22.1% of videos were considered to be 'high-content.' Quality of life issues related to retainer wear was the domain that was present least often in the videos provided by orthodontists (13.9%) and most often in those uploaded by laypersons (53.5%). High-content videos recorded greater mean GQS and DISCERN scores compared with low-content videos (P < 0.001). Strong positive associations existed between the number of domains present and DISCERN scores (rho = 0.808; P < 0.01) and between GQS and DISCERN scores (rho = 0.67; P < 0.01). Intraclass coefficient scores ranged between 0.92 and 0.98. Dissatisfaction with the need for long-term retainer wear was a prevalent negative theme in layperson videos. CONCLUSIONS: The content, reliability, and quality of TikTok videos regarding orthodontic retention were poor. The orthodontic profession must use TikTok effectively to ensure it delivers high-quality information relevant to laypersons' concerns.

We describe a new method for remote emotional state assessment using multispectral face videos, and present our findings: unique transdermal, cardiovascular and spatiotemporal facial patterns associated with different emotional states. The method does not rely on stereotypical facial expressions but utilizes different wavelength sensitivities (visible spectrum, near-infrared, and long-wave infrared) to gauge correlates of autonomic nervous system activity spatially and temporally distributed across the human face (e.g., blood flow, hemoglobin concentration, and temperature). We conducted an experiment where 110 participants viewed 150 short emotion-eliciting videos and reported their emotional experience, while three cameras recorded facial videos with multiple wavelengths. Spatiotemporal multispectral features from the multispectral videos were used as inputs to a machine learning model that was able to classify participants' emotional state (i.e., amusement, disgust, fear, sexual arousal, or no emotion) with satisfactory results (average ROC AUC score of 0.75), while providing feature importance analysis that allows the examination of facial occurrences per emotional state. We discuss findings concerning the different spatiotemporal patterns associated with different emotional states as well as the different advantages of the current method over existing approaches to emotion detection.

Tracking and associating different views of the same target across moving cameras is challenging as its appearance, pose and scale may vary greatly. Moreover, with multiple targets a management module is needed for new targets entering and old targets exiting the field of view of each camera. To address these challenges, we propose DMMA, a Distributed Multi-camera Multi-target Association for real-time tracking that employs a target management module coupled with a local data-structure containing the information on the targets. The target management module shares appearance and label information for each known target for inter-camera association. DMMA is designed as a distributed target association that allows a camera to join at any time, does not require cross-camera calibration, and can deal with target appearance and disappearance. The various parts of DMMA are validated using benchmark datasets and evaluation criteria. Moreover, we introduce a new mobile-camera dataset comprising six different scenes with moving cameras and objects, where DMMA achieves 92% MCTA on average. Experimental results show that the proposed tracker achieves a good association accuracy and speed trade-off by working at 32 frames per second (fps) with high definition (HD) videos.

Mobile health (mHealth) interventions are increasingly used to support community health workers (CHWs) in low-and middle-income countries. As near-peers within their communities, the credibility of CHWs is sometimes questioned-a recognized barrier to their efficacy. Nested within a large, randomized-controlled trial, this qualitative study captured the experiences of South African CHWs, called "Mentor-Mothers," using tablets and animated videos to promote exclusive breastfeeding. We conducted in-depth telephone interviews with 26 tablet-carrying Mentor-Mothers. We analyzed interview transcripts using a Grounded Theory approach, then developed a theoretical framework, based on an emerging theme, for understanding how tablet technology boosts the perceived credibility of CHWs. Tablet-carrying Mentor-Mothers described an increase in their perceived credibility, which they attributed to overt and signaling effects related to enhanced credibility of (1) their messages, (2) themselves as messengers, and (3) the program employing them. Mobile technology investments in CHWs could enhance their credibility, translating into meaningful investments in the health of under-served communities.

Academic research in media forensics mainly focuses on methods for the detection of the traces or artefacts left by media manipulations in media objects. While the resulting detectors often achieve quite impressive detection performances, when tested under lab conditions, hardly any of those have yet come close to the ultimate benchmark for any forensic method, which would be courtroom readiness. This paper tries first to facilitate the different stakeholder perspectives in this field and then to partly address the apparent gap between the academic research community and the requirements imposed onto forensic practitioners. The intention is to facilitate the mutual understanding of these two classes of stakeholders and assist with first steps intended at closing this gap. To do so, first a concept for modelling media forensic investigation pipelines is derived from established guidelines. Then, the applicability of such modelling is illustrated on the example of a fusion-based media forensic investigation pipeline aimed at the detection of DeepFake videos using five exemplary detectors (hand-crafted, in one case neural network supported) and testing two different fusion operators. At the end of the paper, the benefits of such a planned realisation of AI-based investigation methods are discussed and generalising effects are mapped out.

Reflection is a critical skill for medical professionals, however medical students often find it difficult to grasp and engage with. During a special choice module on yoga and mindfulness, students practised mindfulness at home and posted their reflections on the activities in text and vlogs in a closed WhatsApp group. Semi-structured focus groups investigated student perspectives on the acceptability and impact of v-logging on their reflective practice. We thematically analysed transcripts of the WhatsApp conversations and two focus groups.Students felt v-logging was more engaging and convenient than written reflections. V-logging was found to enhance emotional content that is commonly lacking in written reflection, which is has importance as emotional recognition promotes a higher quality of reflection. Although some students were concerned about their appearance in videos, they appeared to overcome this, finding v-logging facilitated deeper reflection compared with traditional written reflections due to accessibility and ease of expression. Furthermore, there was additional learning through watching other students' emotive vlogs which fits with the phenomenon of reflective vicarious learning.Sharing vlogs within a WhatsApp group appeared to be an accessible way for facilitating greater engagement with affective and expressive aspects of reflection.

There is a rapidly growing demand for domestic services among urban families in China. However, domestic work remains a low-status occupation with a high turnover rate. Focusing on the job satisfaction of domestic workers is useful to interpret this phenomenon. We investigate how the job satisfaction of domestic workers in China is affected by to two distinct labor control strategies used by their employers: the installation of video-monitoring devices in employers' homes (a "tough" control strategy), and the Chinese custom of giving monetary gifts, or "hongbao" (a "soft" control strategy). By analyzing data from surveys of domestic workers in four cities in China (N = 699), we find that video monitoring in employers' homes negatively impacts domestic workers' job satisfaction, and that hongbao gifts from employers significantly promote domestic workers' job satisfaction. The analysis of the causal mechanism based on a structural equation model suggests that video monitoring can increase the discrimination that domestic workers perceive, which in turn reduces their job satisfaction. In particular, we find that domestic workers' perception of discrimination completely mediates the effect of video monitoring on their job satisfaction. However, we also find that hongbao gifts significantly reduce domestic workers' perceptions of discrimination, and thus promote their job satisfaction; that is, the relationship between hongbao gifts and job satisfaction is partially mediated by discrimination. Our study provides a more comprehensive understanding of Chinese employers' labor control strategies and their effects on the job satisfaction of domestic workers.

BACKGROUND: Patient-generated health data are increasingly used to record health and well-being concerns and engage patients in clinical care. Patient-generated photographs and videos are accessible and meaningful to patients, making them especially relevant during the current COVID-19 pandemic. However, a systematic review of photos and videos used by patients across different areas of health and well-being is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to synthesize the existing literature on the health and well-being contexts in which patient-generated photos and videos are used, the value gained by patients and health professionals, and the challenges experienced. METHODS: Guided by a framework for scoping reviews, we searched eight health databases (CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science) and one computing database (ACM), returning a total of 28,567 studies. After removing duplicates and screening based on the predefined inclusion criteria, we identified 110 relevant articles. Data were charted and articles were analyzed following an iterative thematic approach with the assistance of NVivo software (version 12; QSR International). RESULTS: Patient-generated photos and videos are used across a wide range of health care services (39/110, 35.5% articles), for example, to diagnose skin lesions, assess dietary intake, and reflect on personal experiences during therapy. In addition, patients use them to self-manage health and well-being concerns (33/110, 30%) and to share personal health experiences via social media (36/110, 32.7%). Photos and videos create significant value for health care (59/110, 53.6%), where images support diagnosis, explanation, and treatment (functional value). They also provide value directly to patients through enhanced self-determination (39/110, 35.4%), social (33/110, 30%), and emotional support (21/110, 19.1%). However, several challenges emerge when patients create, share, and examine photos and videos, such as limited accessibility (16/110, 14.5%), incomplete image sets (23/110, 20.9%), and misinformation through photos and videos shared on social media (17/110, 15.5%). CONCLUSIONS: This review shows that photos and videos engage patients in meaningful ways across different health care activities (eg, diagnosis, treatment, and self-care) for various health conditions. Although photos and videos require effort to capture and involve challenges when patients want to use them in health care, they also engage and empower patients, generating unique value. This review highlights areas for future research and strategies for addressing these challenges.
