RESUMO

The ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is highly contagious and fatal, posing a direct threat to human health and the global economy. Most strategies to prevent, control, and eradicate COVID-19 are established based on the specific characteristics of the pathogen. The quest for interruption and eradication of COVID-19 has moved research forward in understanding fundamental aspects of the virus genome, proteome, replication mechanisms, and virus-host interactions, which pave the way for the development of effective antiviral drugs and vaccines. This chapter provides an overview of recent progress in human coronavirus taxonomy, molecular features of the SARS-CoV-2 genome and proteome, and virus life cycle.

RESUMO

The 2020 Student Debates of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) were live-streamed during the Virtual Annual Meeting to debate current, prominent entomological issues of interest to members. The Student Debates Subcommittee of the National ESA Student Affairs Committee coordinated the student efforts throughout the year and hosted the live event. This year, four unbiased introductory speakers provided background for each debate topic while four multi-university teams were each assigned a debate topic under the theme 'Technological Advances to Address Current Issues in Entomology'. The two debate topics selected were as follows: 1) What is the best taxonomic approach to identify and classify insects? and 2) What is the best current technology to address the locust swarms worldwide? Unbiased introduction speakers and debate teams began preparing approximately six months before the live event. During the live event, teams shared their critical thinking and practiced communication skills by defending their positions on either taxonomical identification and classification of insects or managing the damaging outbreaks of locusts in crops.

Seven species of the genus Aulodrilus (Annelida, Clitellata, Tubificinae) are studied, based on new material from Japan. Aulodrilus dentosus sp. nov. is characterized as having tubular atrium, forked or bifid distal ends of dorsal crotchets, but no genital chaetae, and A. aestivus sp. nov. is characterized as having crescent-shaped atrium, median male bursa, and bifid chaetae in the dorsal bundles. Five other congeners are redescribed: A. limnobius Bretscher, A. pluriseta (Piguet), A. pigueti Kowalewski, A. japonicus Yamaguchi, and A. americanus Brinkhurst Cook. Comparison of taxonomic characters among the 14 species recognized in the genus to date shows that three species differ from other congeners in several features: A. paucichaeta Brinkhurst Barbour, A. adetus (du Bois-Reymond Marcus), and A. apeniatus Cui Wang. They are provisionally maintained in the genus.

RESUMO

Species known from China in the praying mantis subfamily Hierodulinae are revised. A new species, Titanodula menglaensis sp. nov. is described. Hierodula tenuidentata Saussure, 1869 and Dracomantis mirofraternus Shcherbakov Vermeersch, 2020 are newly recorded from China. Two new synonyms are proposed: Titanodula formosana (Giglio-Tos, 1912) = Titanodula fruhstorferi (Werner, 1916), syn. nov. and Hierodula macrodentata Wang, Zhou Zhang, 2020 = Hierodula latipennis Brunner de Wattenwyl, 1893. Ootheca and male genitalia of the Chinese species are described and photographed. An identification key to genera and species of Hierodulinae from China is also provided. The current Chinese checklist contains 21 species.

In this paper, we revised the physopeltine genus Physopelta Amyot Serville, 1843 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Largidae) from Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Five species were recognized and diagnosed, including two new species, Ph. (Neophysopelta) lutaspidata sp. nov. from northern and central Taiwan and Ph. (N.) fusciscutellata sp. nov. from the Ryukyu Islands, Japan and Taiwan, and three known species, Ph. (N.) gutta gutta (Burmeister, 1834), Ph. (N.) parviceps Blöte, 1931, and Ph. (N.) quadriguttata Bergroth, 1894. Physopelta (Neophysopelta) fusciscutellata sp. nov., was previously regarded as either of the two species, Ph. (N.) cincticollis Stål, 1863 and Ph. (N.) parviceps, for populations from Taiwan. Previous records of Ph. (N.) cincticollis from Japan proper and Korea, and Ph. (N.) slanbuschii (Fabricius, 1787) from the Ryukyu Islands were considered as misidentifications of Ph. parviceps. A key to facilitate the identification of the five species known in Japan, Korea, and Taiwan is provided. Additionally, Ph. (N.) parviceps is recorded from China (Guangdong Province and Zhejiang Province) for the first time.

Five new sericine species (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) are described, diagnosed and illustrated from India: Lepidoserica barapaniensis Chandra, Ahrens, Bhunia, Sreedevi Gupta, new species, Maladera kaimurensis Chandra, Ahrens, Bhunia, Sreedevi Gupta, new species, M. silviafabriziae Chandra, Ahrens, Bhunia, Sreedevi Gupta, new species, M. kottagudiensis Chandra, Ahrens, Bhunia, Sreedevi Gupta, new species, and M. tripuraensis Chandra, Ahrens, Bhunia, Sreedevi Gupta, new species. This paper also presents new locality records, including first state records for 74 species (including two subspecies) of Sericini from the Indian subcontinent.

The genus Sarju Ghauri, 1977 (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae: Pentatominae: Halyini) is redescribed along with the description of a new species, Sarju brevirostrata sp. nov. S. farida Ghauri, 1977 and S. nigricollis (Westwood, 1837) are redescribed based on the availability of specimens and the species Cahara nodula Fan and Liu, 2013 was transferred from Cahara to Sarju and proposed Sarju nodula comb.nov. Therefore, at present Sarju comprises 11 species worldwide. A key to the eight species of Sarju occurring in India is also provided.

The nine currently recognized subspecies in the Brown Tinamou (Crypturellus obsoletus) complex are disjunctly widespread in South America, and at least three of them occur in Brazil. Morphological diagnosis of most of these taxa is imprecise, in contrast with consistent vocal differences described in the literature. We conducted a taxonomic review of two Amazonian taxa, C. o. griseiventris and C. o. hypochraceus, using morphological, morphometric, and vocal characters. Our results indicate that C. o. hypochraceus (Miranda-Ribeiro, 1938) is a junior synonym of C. o. griseiventris (Salvadori, 1895), and that Crypturellus griseiventris (Salvadori, 1895) must be treated as a full species, based on unique and fully diagnosable plumage and vocal patterns.

Koreoneura eunyeopae Hossain et J. Kwon gen. et sp. nov., the biggest microleafhopper from East Asia, dwelling on Cornus coreana, along with a newly recorded genus, Igutettix Matsumura, 1932 based on I. oculatus (Lindberg), 1928, are described and illustrated from Korea. A key to the genera and checklist of Korean dikraneurine species are provided.

Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) tetraporus sp. nov., collected on grasses in Crimea, is proposed as a new species for science. The new species can be separated from all known species of Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) by the combination of following characters; peritreme extending almost to level of setae j1, four pairs of solenostomes on dorsal shield, two pairs of setae on sternal shield, a sclerotised v-shaped plate posterior to sternal shield, four pairs of pre-anal setae, a pair of small rounded pre-anal solenostomes, differentiated and larger atrium of spermatheca and eight setae on genu II. In addition, T. (A.) montanus Chant Yoshida-Shaul (Acari: Phytoseiidae), a species only known based on its original description from Canada is reported for the first time in Russia. The new record is redescribed and illustrated based on female specimens collected from Prunus padus L. (Rosaceae) where it was associated with eriophyid mites in Pereval Seminskiy, Altai Republic. This species may be an important predator as a potential biological control agent of eriophyid mites.

In the 10th edition of the Systema Naturae (Linnaeus, 1758), which is the starting point of the Code for Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN Art. 3), Linnaeus named three species of the genus Alcyonium, A. arboreum, A. digitatum, and A. bursa. The genus name Alcyonium was based on the 16th and 17th century pre-Linnaean use for a diversity of marine organisms, including cnidarians, sponges, bryozoans, and algae. In the first valid presentation of the genus name, Linnaeus narrowed this down to comprise two clear cnidarians (A. arboreum, currently Paragorgia arborea, and A. digitatum, still accepted under this name and subsequently assigned as type species), but the pre-Linnaean diversity perhaps explains why the third species, A. bursa, was not recognized as a cnidarian. Linnaeus defined it as 'Alcyonium acaule pulposum subglobosum. Habitat in O. Europaea.' (translated as: Alcyonium without stalk, fleshy, semiglobular. From the European Ocean).' Attempts to fix its identity among contemporary authors at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century followed a checkered course, with opinions varying from algae to tunicates and sponges.

RESUMO

We report on a survey of phytoseiid mites associated with medicinal plants in West Bengal, India. Thirteen species were collected during the study, four of which are described as new species in the subgenus Typholodromus (Anthoseius) De Leon, 1959. The new species are Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) bulbosis Karmakar et al. sp. nov., Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) bengalensis Karmakar et al. sp. nov., Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) adhatoda Karmakar et al. sp. nov., and Typhlodromus (Anthoseius) sagaricus Karmakar et al. sp. nov.

The genus Klimaszewskia Yin Zhang of the pselaphine tribe Tyrini was recently established to include a single species, viz., K. punctata Yin Zhang, from Indonesia (Yin Zhang 2021). However, the generic name was preoccupied by Klimaszewskia Szelegiewicz, 1979 (Hemiptera, Aphididae). In accordance with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999: Article 60.3), a new replacement is here proposed.

Many genus-level changes to the classification of Trochilini were enacted in Stiles et al. (2017b). We have since found that two further genera therein emended each require replacement names. The first of these requiring a replacement name is Uranomitra Reichenbach, 1854 [March], which is herewith interpreted as an additional synonym of Saucerottia Bonaparte, 1850, along with its junior synonym Cyanomyia Bonaparte, 1854a [May]. We show that both must have the same type species, as originally designated, Trochilus quadricolor Vieillot, 1822 = Ornismya cyanocephala Lesson, 1829. The second case in which a replacement name is required is Leucolia Mulsant E. Verreaux, 1866, herewith interpreted as an additional synonym of Leucippus Bonaparte, 1850, with the same type species, Trochilus fallax Bourcier, 1843. We herein propose replacement names for both Uranomitra and Leucolia.

Most recently, Coimbra et al. (2020) published an article in this journal (Zootaxa, 4729 (2): 177-194) questioning the taxonomic position of the genus Copytus Skogsberg, 1939 (Crustacea, Ostracoda) along with proposing it as the type genus of their new family (Copytidae Coimbra et al., 2020), and erecting two new species that were listed by previous authors as Copytus sp. 1 and Copytus sp. 2. The main diagnostic characteristics of their new proposed family (and the genus Copytus) are the hinge type and muscle scars on the carapace and/or valves (see lines 6-8 from the bottom, p. 179 in Coimbra et al. 2020). They also underlined that (p. 179) "...this study is based exclusively on the morphology of the animals' hard parts". While the authors considered another genus (Neocopytus) proposed by Külköylüoglu, Colin Kiliç (2007) of the family Neocytherididae as invalid, they interestingly transferred some species of Neocopytus to Copytus as species of their new family (Coimbra et al. 2020). Herein, my point with the comments listed below is to clarify that, when possible, both soft and hard parts should be considered in taxonomy, and such an integrated approach clearly indicates that Neocopytus is a valid and taxonomically useful genus.

MOTIVATION: In the age of big data, the amount of scientific information available online dwarfs the ability of current tools to support researchers in locating and securing access to the necessary materials. Well-structured open data and the smart systems that make the appropriate use of it are invaluable and can help health researchers and professionals to find the appropriate information by, e.g., configuring the monitoring of information or refining a specific query on a disease. METHODS: We present an automated text classifier approach based on the MEDLINE/MeSH thesaurus, trained on the manual annotation of more than 26 million expert-annotated scientific abstracts. The classifier was developed tailor-fit to the public health and health research domain experts, in the light of their specific challenges and needs. We have applied the proposed methodology on three specific health domains: the Coronavirus, Mental Health and Diabetes, considering the pertinence of the first, and the known relations with the other two health topics. RESULTS: A classifier is trained on the MEDLINE dataset that can automatically annotate text, such as scientific articles, news articles or medical reports with relevant concepts from the MeSH thesaurus. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed text classifier shows promising results in the evaluation of health-related news. The application of the developed classifier enables the exploration of news and extraction of health-related insights, based on the MeSH thesaurus, through a similar workflow as in the usage of PubMed, with which most health researchers are familiar.

The number of patients surviving severe brain injury is increasing; however, many are left in a prolonged disorder of consciousness. With appropriate treatment, patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness can survive for years. Unless an advance directive exists, the treating clinicians can authorize withdrawal of clinically assisted nutrition and hydration for these patients, based on best interests. The classic terminology used in prolonged disorders of consciousness ranges from coma, vegetative state to minimally conscious state. However, a new group of patients with covert cognition has been identified in the last decade, making it necessary to revise the current taxonomy to better reflect our understanding of these conditions. With the introduction of a less ambiguous terminology, the challenges when it comes to withdrawal of clinically assisted nutrition and hydration of these patients may ease. A decision-making pathway for withdrawal of clinically assisted nutrition and hydration for patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness, based on a new taxonomy is proposed. These decisions should be based primarily on best interests. The adoption of a new classification for impairments of consciousness would clarify and improve how we think about these patients. Moreover, the development of accurate prognostic predictors would be a major step in the decision-making process, as it would influence the beneficent pathway towards the best clinical outcome.

RESUMO

Species taxa are the units of taxonomy most suited to measure virus diversity, and they account for more than 70% of all virus taxa. Yet, as evidenced by the content of GenBank entries and illustrated by the recent literature on SARS-CoV-2, they are the most neglected taxa of virus research. To correct this disparity, we propose to make species taxa a first choice for communicating virus taxonomy in publications concerning viruses. We see it as a key step toward promoting research on diverse viruses, including pathogens, at this fundamental level of biology.

We derive the fast convergence rates of a deep neural network (DNN) classifier with the rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation function learned using the hinge loss. We consider three cases for a true model: (1) a smooth decision boundary, (2) smooth conditional class probability, and (3) the margin condition (i.e., the probability of inputs near the decision boundary is small). We show that the DNN classifier learned using the hinge loss achieves fast rate convergences for all three cases provided that the architecture (i.e., the number of layers, number of nodes and sparsity) is carefully selected. An important implication is that DNN architectures are very flexible for use in various cases without much modification. In addition, we consider a DNN classifier learned by minimizing the cross-entropy, and show that the DNN classifier achieves a fast convergence rate under the conditions that the noise exponent and margin exponent are large. Even though they are strong, we explain that these two conditions are not too absurd for image classification problems. To confirm our theoretical explanation, we present the results of a small numerical study conducted to compare the hinge loss and cross-entropy.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the interobserver agreement of the new AOSpine classification for subaxial cervical fractures. Methods: A descriptive study, which11 traumatic lesions of the subaxial cervical spine (through radiographic and tomographic images), were evaluated by 16 observers being: 6 senior surgeons, 4 fellows in spinal surgery and 6 physicians residents in Orthopedics and Traumatology by the new AOSpine classification, with subsequent statistical analysis of the results. An agreement analysis was performed using the Kappa coefficient, both individually and in combination, with an interpretation of the index performed using the standardized model for Landis and Koch. To determine the level of significance of the analyzes, values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: In general, the level of agreement among the examiners was considered reasonable. The lesions "A0 (F3)", "A4 (F3)", "B1", "B3", "B3 (F3)", "C", "C (F3)" and "F3"showed a low level of agreement between the examiners. The level of reasonable agreement was obtained between fractures "A0", "A1", "A4", "B2" and "C (F4)". The only fracture that presented a moderate level of agreement was the "C (F4 BL)" lesion. This result indicates that the referred injury was the fracture of the subaxial column that presented the best level of agreement among the 16 examiners in the present study. Conclusions: The results of the study indicate an intermediate agreement of the new AOSpine classification for subaxial cervical lesion and point to the need to carry out studies that seek to evaluate this new classification in order to better evaluate its strengths and weaknesses, contributing for its improvement. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a concordância interobservadores da nova classificação AOSpine para fraturas cervicais subaxiais. Métodos: Estudo descritivo, por meio do qual foram avaliadas 11 lesões traumáticas da coluna cervical subaxial (através de imagens radiográficas e tomográficas) por 16 observadores, sendo seis cirurgiões seniors, quatro fellows em cirurgia da coluna e seis médicos residentes em Ortopedia e Traumatologia, pela nova classificação AOSpine. A análise de concordância foi realizada através da do uso do coeficiente Kappa, tanto de forma individual como de forma combinada, sendo a interpretação do índice realizada através do modelo padronizado por Landis e Koch. Para determinar o nível de significância das análises, valores de p menores que 0.05 foram considerados estatisticamente significativos. Resultados: De maneira geral, o nível de concordância entre os examinadores foi considerado razoável. As lesões "A0(F3)", "A4(F3)", "B1", "B3", "B3(F3)", "C", "C(F3)" e "F3 apresentaram nível de concordância fraco entre os examinadores. O nível de concordância razoável foi obtido entre as fraturas "A0", "A1", "A4", "B2" e "C(F4)". A única fratura que apresentou nível de concordância moderado foi a lesão "C (F4 BL)". Esse resultado indica que a referida lesão foi a fratura da coluna subaxial que apresentou o melhor nível de concordância entre os 16 examinadores do presente estudo. Conclusões: Os resultados do estudo indicam uma concordância intermediária da nova classificação AOSpine para lesões da cervical subaxial e apontam para a necessidade da realização de estudos que busquem avaliar esta nova classificação, de forma a melhor avaliar seus pontos fortes e fracos, contribuindo para sua aprimoração. Se realizó un análisis de acuerdo utilizando el coeficiente Kappa, tanto individualmente como en combinación, con una interpretación del índice realizada utilizando el modelo estandarizado para Landis y Koch. Para determinar el nivel de significación de los análisis, se consideraron estadísticamente valores inferiores a 0,05. Resultados: En general, el nivel de concordancia entre los examinadores se consideró razonable. Las lesiones "A0 (F3)", "A4 (F3)", "B1", "B3", "B3 (F3)", "C", "C (F3)" y "F3 presentaron un nivel de concordancia débil entre los examinadores. El nivel de concordancia razonable se obtuvo entre las fracturas A0, A1, A4, B2 y C (F4). La única fractura que presentó un nivel de concordancia moderado fue la lesión "C (F4 BL)". Este resultado indica que dicha lesión fue la fractura de la columna subaxial que presentó el mejor nivel de concordancia entre los 16 examinadores del presente estudio. Conclusiones: Los resultados del estudio indican un acuerdo intermedio de la nueva clasificación de AOSpine para lesiones cervicales subaxiales y apuntan a la necesidad de realizar estudios que busquen evaluar esta nueva clasificación, para evaluar mejor sus puntos fuertes y débil, para su mejoramiento.
