ABSTRACT
This study aimed to identify the perceptions of users of psychoactive substances aboutcardiovascular risk factors and their relation to addiction. Forty four subjects were selected who participated in the group activities about prevention of cardiovascular disease. Following activities, the participants were individually interviewed to assess the importance of the work performed. Datawere processed using Bardin’s content analysis method. They allowed the organization of thematic categories. The activity provided interaction between subjects, decreased feelings of loneliness, and time use. The interviews evidenced participants’ little knowledge about what drugs can do to the cardiovascular system. It was noticed that subjects were interested in keeping health care, instigated by the concepts learned in the educational activity. These results confirm the importanceof the educational activity, and allow inferring that the experience could be replicated with other populations.
