As Principais Modificações Orais queocorrem durante o Envelhecimento / The Main Modifications in the Oral Cavity throughout the Aging Process

RESUMO

Realizar uma discussão a cerca das principaisalterações morfofisiológicas que ocorrem com oenvelhecimento e a repercussão destas na maneira comoos cirurgiões-dentistas irão atender a estes pacientes. Afinal,nos últimos anos, o constante aumento da população idosano Brasil fez com que a saúde do idoso ganhasse ênfase nocenário nacional. Material e Métodos: A busca dos artigospara esta revisão usou as bases de pesquisa online PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, BBO, Scielo e Science Direct. Comoestratégias de busca utilizou-se as palavras “geriatric” e“dentistry” e limitou-se a um período de cinco anos, de 2006a 2011. Resultado: Constatou-se que as alteraçõesmorfofisiológicas orais que mais prevalecem no pacienteidoso são a xerostomia, a perda da capacidade gustativa,alterações no periodonto, o déficit motor que leva à dificuldadede higienização bucal, perdas dentárias e lesões em mucosa.Além disso, a saúde bucal desempenha um importante papelna qualidade de vida destes pacientes. Conclusão: Oodontólogo deve aprender sobre os cuidados específicosque a população idosa necessita e entender que oatendimento desta parcela da população deve ser empregadosob uma visão mais abrangente, visto que esta pode trazerconsigo um conjunto de patologias sistêmicas que interferemna saúde bucal...

ABSTRACT

To conduct a discussion about the mainmorphophysiological changes that occur with aging and theimpact of these on how dentists will assist their patients. Inrecent years, the increasing number of elderly in the Brazilianpopulation has made their health issues to arouse attentionon the national setting. Materials and Methods: The articlesearches for this systematic review were carried out in thedatabases PubMed/MEDLINE, LILACS, BBO, SciELO andScience Direct. As search strategies, we used the words“geriatric” and “dentistry”, limited to a period of five years,from 2006 to 2011. Results: It was found that the mostprevalent oral morphophysiological changes in the elderlywere xerostomia, loss of taste ability, changes in theperiodontium, motor deficit leading to difficulty in oral hygiene,tooth loss and damage to the mucosa. In addition, oral healthcare plays an important role in the quality of life of thesepatients. Conclusion: The dentist should learn about specificcare demanded by the elderly population and also understandthat assistance given to this part of the population should becomprehensive, since it can be related to a number ofsystemic diseases affecting the oral health...
