El efecto relativo de la edad en el fútbol / The relative age effect in football

RESUMEN

Las posibilidades de promoción deportiva son menores en los jóvenes nacidos en los últimos meses del año deportivo, debido a su menor grado de madurez física, mental y emocional. Este fenómeno, conocido como Efecto Relativo de la Edad o RAE, no sólo afecta al desarrollo deportivo del joven, sino a la misma participación en las actividades deportivas. En el presente artículo se describe el RAE, revisando los factores implicados en su aparición, y su incidencia en el fútbol de diversos países. Se estudia su existencia en los equipos de la primera división del fútbol español, y en el fútbol guipuzcoano masculino y femenino, en la temporada 2002-2003. El RAE se presenta en forma de cociente, siendo el numerador el porcentaje de jugadores nacidos en la primera mitad del año, y el denominador el de los nacidos en la segunda mitad. En la primera división del fútbol español, el valor medio del RAE es de 54.7/ 45.3. En el fútbol guipuzcoano se estudiaron un total de 2.558 jugadores, pertenecientes a 121 equipos de distintas categorías, el 30.0 % de todos los federados. El RAE medio observado en las categorías cadete y juvenil va desde el 61.5/38.5 de la categoría Juvenil Liga Vasca al 76/24 de la Cadete Liga Vasca. Además, se estudia la distribución de las fechas de nacimiento de la selección vasca de fútbol, categoría sub-18, que arroja un RAE del 89/11 en su conjunto, y del 100/00 en los jugadores juveniles de primer año pertenecientes a esta selección. Entre los equipos seniors, los valores van desde un 36/64 en 2ª División B al 62.5/37.5 de la 2ª División A. En el fútbol femenino de categoría Territorial, el RAE medio es de 52.35/47.65, mientras que en el de categoría Nacional es de 61.2/38.8 (AU)

ABSTRACT

Teenagers born at the end of the competitional year have less possibilities for sport promotion because of their physical, cognitive andemotional immaturity. This phenomenon, know as Relative Age Effect -RAE-, has influence also the possibilities in participation of sportactivities. In this paper RAE is described, the factors implicated in its appearance, and the incidence of RAE in football players of manycountries. We study RAE in Spanish First Division football teams, and in the different categories of football in Gipuzkoa (Basque Country), in the season 2002-2003. RAE is shown as a quotient, being the numerator the percentage of players born in the first half of year, and the denominator the percentage of players born in the second half of the year. In professional teams the mean value of RAE was 54.7/ 45.3. In Gipuzkoa, we studied 2.558 players of 121 football teams, a 30% of all players. The RAE mean values ranged from 61.5/38.5 for the Juvenil Liga Vasca category to 76/24 for the Cadete Liga Vasca category. In addition, the born dates of the players of the Basque Selectionunder-18, showed a RAE of 89/11 for all the players, and a RAE of 100/00 for the junior players of the first year. In the senior teams, RAE ranged from 36/64 to 62.5/37.5. In female soccer teams, RAE was 52.35/47.65 in the Territorial category, and 61.2/38.8 in the National category. The anthropometric and ergometric characteristics of selected young players (12 years old) were studied, and compared between the players born at the first and second months of the year and players born in the last two months.
