ABSTRACT
Maternal mortality ratio, infant mortality rate, and under 5 mortality (BI10, 12, 13) are reported by countries; an increase may reflect animprovement in data coverage and quality.Certified deaths due to ill-defined and unknown conditions (BI 16) referto death certificates issued in a given year for which the underlying causeof death was symptoms, signs, and other ill-defined and unknownconditions (ICD-10 R00-R99).Mortality under-registration (BI 17) is determined by subtracting from 1the total deaths registered in a country-period divided by the correspondingtotal estimated deaths, obtained after applying the UN estimatedcrude death rates to the corresponding population estimates by the UN.Corrected mortality rates (BI 18BI 28) are computed based on registeredmortality data, applying a correction algorithm for mortality underregistrationand a redistribution algorithm for deaths from ill-definedcauses. The methodology used is presented in Health Statistics from theAmericas, 2006 edition (http//www.paho.org/HSA2006). Observedrates are presented for two groups of countries. For countries with highquality data (proportion of under-registration and ill-defined causes ofdeath under 10%) and for countries without inputs for correction. Ageadjustedmortality rates are computed by direct standardization to theWHO World Standard Population (http//www.who.int/healthinfo/paper31.pdf).Malaria risk areas population (BI 31) shows the proportion of the totalpopulation in a country living in high and moderate malaria transmissionrisk areas. Moderate risk API between 1 to 10/1,000 pop; high riskAPI > 10/1,000 pop.National Health Expenditure (BI 42AB) Public expenditure (BI 42A)corresponds to general government expenditure in the function health(Division 07) of the Classification of the Functions of Government(COFOG); Private expenditure (BI 42B) is based on the weight of healthin the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of the country...
