RESUMO
Considerando que a concepção sobre o processo de envelhecimento está associada tanto a aspectos positivos como negativos, além de sofrer influências do contexto de vida, propõe-se, no presente estudo, compreender a percepção sobre o envelhecimento por idosos que frequentam a Universidade Aberta da Terceira Idade (UNATI). Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo que utilizou um roteiro com dados sociodemográficos e uma questão aberta sobre o significado do envelhecimento. Participaram 25 idosos da UNATI da Universidade Estadual Paulista, Campus de Marília. Os dados foram analisados na perspectiva interpretativa hermenêutica dialética. A maioria dos participantes são mulheres na faixa etária dos 60 a 69 anos e 40% deles contam com formação universitária. Para os participantes, o envelhecimento é percebido como um balanço entre perdas e ganhos; há a possibilidade de viver mais livremente e, por outro lado, sentem-se ameaçados pela vulnerabilidade das condições de e pela proximidade com a finitude. Como conclusão, depreende-se que as percepções desses idosos sobre o envelhecimento perpassam, ao mesmo tempo, o vivido e o imaginário e, mesmo com as perdas se evidenciando, conseguem manter-se ativos, participativos e em pleno processo de avanço do conhecimento e interação social sem desconsiderar as fragilidades e vulnerabilidades decorrentes dessa fase da vida.
ABSTRACT
Considering that the concept of the process of aging is associated to both positive and negative aspects which also suffers influences from life context, this study aims to understand the perception on agingby seniors who attend the Universidade Aberta da Terceira Idade — Open University for the Elderly (UNATI). This is a qualitative study, which used a script with demographic data and an open question about the meaning of aging. 25 senior citizens from UNATI at the Universidade Estadual Paulista, Marilia Campus participated in the study. Data were analyzed in an interpretative hermeneutic dialectic perspective. Most participants were women; aged from 60 to 69 years old and 40% of them have college degrees. For participants, aging is seen as a balance between losses and gains; there is the possibility to live more freely and, on the other hand, feel threatened by the vulnerability of the conditions and proximity to the fi nitude. In conclusion it appears that the perceptions of these seniors about aging permeate is about the lived moments and the imaginary at the same time, and even with the losses becoming more evident, they remain active, participating, and in full process of getting new knowledge and social interaction, without disregarding the weaknesses and vulnerabilities resulting from this phase of life.
