ABSTRACT
Inflammatory and ulcerative gastric lesions has been increasing infrequency world wide. As a result of life style, such lesions tend to relapse. Therefore, the search for new treatment alternatives, with few adverse effects, accessible and low cost is interesting. The plant species Punica granatum (pomegranate) is used as a food supplement and as a popular alternative means to aid in the treatment of various diseases. Antiinflammatory and healing properties stimulate research of the pharmacological action of this plant in gastric lesions. In this paper, we analyzed the preventive and curative action of hydroalcoholic extracts ofP. granatum (PG and POM) in the concentrations of 250mg/kg and 500mg/kg and industrialized pomegranate juice, concentrated and diluted (Sc and Sd), compared with Ranitidine Hydrochloride, through an experimental model of acute gastritis induced by ethanol in rats. We evaluated alterations of intragastric pH, the area of ulcerated gastric mucosa (AU) and the inhibition of ulcer index (UI%) of each therapeutic substance used. In curative treatment, it was shown that PG250 and PG500 increased the pH, but didn’t decrease the harmful effects of ethanol and POM250 and POM500 showed pH and reduction of gastric lesions similar to those promoted by Ranitidine Hydrochloride. In analyzingthe AU and IU%, treatment with POM250, POM500, Sc and Sd were effective in the inhibition of gastric ulcers in different degrees of intensity. Sc reduced pH and developed milder lesions, and was effective both in curing and prevention of gastric lesions. In the preventive treatment, the animals treated with PG500 had the best results on the inhibition of ulceration. Thus, it was concluded that against ethanol induced gastric lesions, curative treatment with POM250, POM500 and Sc was effective, and in the preventive treatment, all substances used were able to prevent gastric mucosal ulceration, and the PG500 and Sc were...(AU)
