Hypotriglyceridemic effect of flaxseed in rats

ABSTRACT

This research evaluated the influence of diet containing flaxseed oil or flaxseed meal in a dietary induced rat model of hypertriglyceridemia to assess some possible effects on lipid metabolism. Hypertriglyceridemia was induced in rats using high fructose diet. Feeding hypertriglyceridemia rats diet containing flaxseed oil or flaxseed meal for four weeks showed significant reduction in the plasma level of triglycerides, total lipids, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, while HDL- cholesterol and HDL- cholesterol/ total cholesterol ratio wee increased significantly. In conclusion; flaxseed oil or flaxseed meal supplementation may provide a new therapeutic strategy to reduce hypertriglyceridemia
