ABSTRACT
It has been known for many years that the smoking habit can cause lung damage. Among the diseases commonly related with tobacco are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. In recent years, attention has also been focused on the role of the smoking habit in the development of diffuse interstitial lung diseases (DILD). In fact, there are three diseases, respiratory bronchiolitis associated to DILD, desquamative interstitial pneumonia and pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, which are currently considered etiologically linked to the smoking habit and others that have more likelihood of developing in smokers. The role of smoking habit in the pathogenesis of DILD will be the focus of this review (AU)
